Flood inducing rain continues to surge through North Queensland

Flash-flooding remains a threat for some communities in north Queensland with monsoonal rain set to continue for a few more days. Monthly rain records have been smashed while warnings remain in place.

00:00We're seeing a slight reprieve in heavy rain here in Townsville this morning but it's not

00:07expected to last.

00:09A severe weather warning remains in place for more heavy rain for communities from Tully

00:15all the way down south to Eyre in the Burdekin community.

00:20Some locations have recorded 250mm of rain overnight and that's on top of the already

00:27record-breaking rainfall that this weather event has brought the north.

00:31They've recorded their highest monthly rainfall for February, 1,496mm of rain, that's the

00:40highest February total since records began 130 years ago.

00:46The Bureau of Meteorology is once again asking the public to keep across the weather information

00:52with the situation not expected to ease for days.

00:56That risk of heavy falls is likely to continue through parts of today but may ebb and flow

01:01at times depending on how much shower activity is building in the area.

01:05But there's still going to be the risk of showers and thunderstorms right across north

01:09Queensland well into next week.

01:11Now of course some communities were only just beginning the clean up after seeing properties

01:18inundated by floodwaters last week.

01:20Now they're on flood alert again.

01:23This renewed rainfall has really hampered the recovery efforts and is testing the resilience

01:30of communities here in the north, many of which have been isolated or without power

01:36for almost a week.

01:38So we're hoping for some reprieve soon but the Bureau of Meteorology is urging people

01:43to keep across those weather warnings for the days ahead.
