04:00Güzel, Merceye?
04:01Evet, I can picture it.
04:02I can see it all.
04:03This is so beautiful.
04:04Our lake coast theme is Driftwood Dunes so it's an east coast, soft and romantic vibe.
04:10I really want to combine our styles of classic and rustic in this space.
04:14For depth and texture, let's add wood paneling to the walls with white appliances.
04:19The sink wall will be a beautiful neutral blue with cabinets that match and shelving throughout.
04:24We'll add a movable custom wood island and a modern dining area for gathering.
04:29Sounds like a lot of paneling, let's get started.
04:33I just think the kitchen is so important.
04:36Inclusivity is just the key point of every kitchen layout.
04:40I see the kitchen as a sleek and minimal space, dark tone cabinetry, black countertop.
04:46And then to create a natural flow, let's give the island a little bit of rounded edge.
04:51For the dining area, we'll carry through our natural elements with a fluted wall feature.
04:56We'll center the room with a wooden table and I love a pendant lantern to top it all off.
05:02And I'm sure you're going to put some difficult things for me to install.
05:05Yes, of course.
05:06Of course.
05:21We all know that kitchen and dining rooms are a huge investment in any property.
05:25This is arguably the most important space.
05:29I want to see that all the elements that are necessary are there and it can be hard to balance
05:34those things.
05:35You don't want it to be boring, but it has to be practical.
05:38You don't want it to be gimmicky, but you want it to have good energy.
05:43Oh, it's so good.
05:46It's so good.
05:47It's so good.
05:48For the kitchen, I want to show our guests who Coral Cove is and what we have to offer.
05:53We offer color, texture.
05:55I want as soon as people walk in that they are like, what, what, what?
05:59That's what I want.
05:59I want what, what?
06:00This is when you were in the kitchen dancing, like, hey, hey, hey.
06:05I love it!
06:12Kitchen day!
06:13In both of our cultures, kitchen and dining is really important to the heart of the home.
06:18That's where everyone creates memories.
06:20So it's really important for us to hit it home this week.
06:23For the kitchen, I want it to really emulate and home in on our Moonlight Bay theme.
06:27We're going dark kitchen, which I'm excited about, but also no upper cabinets, which I'm also very excited about.
06:33But I'm nervous.
06:35Might not be everyone's cup of tea, so we're taking a big risk with this.
06:37And I hope the judges appreciate that.
06:39Go bold or go home.
06:40It's true.
06:43You're a big fan of the kitchen.
06:44You do a lot of cooking.
06:45I do a lot of cooking.
06:46You do a lot of eating.
06:48We'll divide and conquer.
06:49Okay.
06:49Let's check in on some kitchens and dining rooms.
06:51The dividing part's always the most fun with you.
06:54Hello.
06:55Knock, knock.
06:56Hello.
06:56Wow.
06:58A little teal.
06:59Yeah.
07:00To make the deal.
07:01Renters are coming in.
07:02They don't want the kitchen that they cook in.
07:04This is the kitchen that's fun.
07:06I'm on vacation.
07:07You are 100% correct.
07:08I'm going to tell you a secret.
07:10One of our competitors did a pink kitchen.
07:12Do you know that that is the most popular of all the cabins with guests?
07:18Well, that makes me feel good.
07:20Yeah.
07:20Okay.
07:20So explain teal.
07:21This represents the teal ocean blue water of the Bahamas.
07:25My design style for the lake house is influenced by my family from the Bahamas.
07:30Specifically, it's inspired by my grandfather who has passed.
07:35Oh, my grandfather means so much to me.
07:38He'd be so proud of all that I've accomplished, not only as a lawyer, but here I am doing design.
07:44He was very energetic and lively, and every time he entered a room, he would say, I'm live and in
07:49color.
07:49And that is what I hope people feel when they walk into the space.
07:53They feel alive and see lots of color.
07:57I feel his energy.
07:59You just gave me goosebumps.
08:02But I have to say something.
08:04I feel like when I look at this, maybe you've gone nuts.
08:11Like, am I right?
08:13Coconut.
08:14Coconut.
08:14Yeah.
08:15But this is something cool.
08:16This is your Instagrammable moment.
08:18One string down and 50 more coconuts to go.
08:22I've seen it before.
08:23People come up with an idea like this.
08:25They don't think how they're going to fasten it to the ceiling.
08:27Somebody grabs it, pulls it down, and you've got a coconut to the head.
08:31And as a lawyer, you know I'm thinking about all kinds of liability situations.
08:35I just need Scott to exit stage left so I can get back to my coconuts.
08:40Get to it.
08:43So, sisters working together.
08:45Yes.
08:45How did you end up here?
08:46Our dad has remodeled our entire home.
08:49Melissa was always the one willing to get her hands dirty.
08:52And I was always the designer, picking the finishes, the colors, going antiquing with my mom.
08:57Our parents found a charming little home in a village that my dad fell in love with.
09:02And his goal was to take this little house and want to create a family home out of it.
09:07Then, once we were at a certain age, we would start helping with things.
09:11And I do feel like that will give us a leg up in the competition.
09:13Just being around the renovation and growing up through it.
09:17So, were you in charge?
09:18I can take a leader role on sometimes, I would say, but...
09:21She allows your opinion at the table?
09:23Sometimes.
09:24Sometimes?
09:26Now, you're going to have your range here.
09:28Yes.
09:28Yeah.
09:29And you're going to have the wood as the backsplash?
09:31The wood is the backsplash.
09:32A shiplack backsplash vertical.
09:34Are you going vertical?
09:35Bring your eye up.
09:37Countertops do come up behind.
09:39So, you've got a thick stone going on the wall.
09:40Yes.
09:40It's going to have a bit of a raise behind that.
09:42Yes.
09:43I would say, just as a word of caution, if you're going to have the stone backsplash against
09:47the wall, think about the transition from wood to stone.
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:50Because it's got to be...
09:51Perfect.
09:52It's got to be laser cut.
09:54Okay.
09:54That one little detail can ruin the entire thing.
10:02Don't let that wind mess up your hair.
10:04It's unbelievable.
10:06We don't see eye to eye on a lot of things.
10:08In fact, nothing almost.
10:09But one thing that we do have in common is...
10:12We like to fish.
10:14Another day at work, eh?
10:15I'm always up for a fishing competition.
10:18It is tradition.
10:19And it's my mission.
10:21Now you're just wishing.
10:25Big fish wins.
10:27You just need one big fish.
10:30Oh, I saw a fish.
10:32Ooh, it's toasty out, Brian.
10:34Yeah, we might be here in a little while.
10:36Hold on, hold on, hold on.
10:38Take it.
10:39Got you.
10:39Got him.
10:40Get the net.
10:40Okay, how do I work this?
10:41How do I work this?
10:42Get the net.
10:43Get him to the boat.
10:45Woo-hoo-hoo!
10:46Hey!
10:48That's gonna be a tough one to beat.
10:50I'll give it to you right now.
10:51One for Scott, zero for Brian.
10:54Yeah, yeah.
10:55It's a setup.
10:58Ridiculous.
10:59There'll be monsters hiding in there somewhere.
11:02Come on.
11:03Oh, yeah, I'm on the board.
11:05No!
11:05Yes!
11:06Oh!
11:07I gotta give it to you.
11:09I gotta give you the crown.
11:10Just a wee guy.
11:13Pains me.
11:14I guess I'll make you dinner again.
11:22So, we are building a custom hood fan box, and we are gonna finish it in some beautiful plaster.
11:29Last week, unfortunately, the feedback wasn't great on the finishing carpentry.
11:33We made too many changes too late in the project.
11:37Let's cut the bull for a sec.
11:38I was just frantically just trying to piecemeal everything together.
11:42No way!
11:43It's just time to just mount this bad boy.
11:44Being in this competition with other teams that are amazing.
11:47Okay.
11:48Well, they're right there.
11:48There is no time for us to make massive pivots in a design.
11:52So, that's something that I can work to be better at.
11:54So, I can help lead Mirdad.
11:56Good job!
11:58Give me another hour.
12:00I just gotta do one more coat, and then you can get in here and do some lime wash.
12:04What?
12:04What is that?
12:06You put it in the door, man.
12:07You expecting company?
12:09Oh, my God.
12:09What is this?
12:11Ready?
12:11That's what we need right now.
12:13Mercy.
12:13Oh, no.
12:19We're cooking up something special for this week's design detour.
12:23You must whip up a custom banquette.
12:25A banquette.
12:26That's equal parts style and storage.
12:28With a seat so cozy, your guests won't want to leave, even after dessert is long gone.
12:33So, roll up your sleeves, grab your tools, and remember, in this competition, every seat counts.
12:39We don't have time for this.
12:41Why?
12:42Let's get to work.
12:42If we act like we've never saw this, do you think we can get away with not doing it?
12:47Probably not.
12:48Ugh.
12:48It looks like we got a lot more work to do.
12:50Scott and Brian give us a design detour of a banquette that we have to build ourselves.
12:56I'm thinking we go an L shape.
13:00I want to be able to seat at least four people, and then I will get some dining chairs on
13:05the other side.
13:06Last but not least, if we can add pretty, pretty please.
13:11Down here, a cutout niche that we can fit a dog bowl for food and water.
13:17Oh, okay.
13:18I know if you have a pet-friendly short-term rental, you actually have the opportunity to charge a lot
13:23more for your nightly rate.
13:25And it's going to be the green that we already have on our island.
13:31Sounds amazing.
13:34This banquette is going to be a lot more work than we planned on, but it's kind of exciting to
13:39do some carpentry.
13:41I'll start with building the frame and designing it all, and I guess we're doing some upholstery as well.
13:46Don't forget the dog dish.
13:47Oh.
13:50It's going to be a lot of work. I hope these dogs appreciate it.
13:53They will.
13:57My to-do list is absurd right now.
14:01Usually I don't like design detours, but I'm actually pretty happy about this one,
14:05because our kitchen can use a little bit more storage, and this is a great opportunity to do so.
14:10Yay! I'm so excited.
14:12The lake houses aren't massive, but if we're incorporating this banquette,
14:16it's important that it also has the ability to act as storage.
14:19Otherwise, you have the dead space underneath the seating.
14:22Normally, I would put a banquette right here and have it be an L-shape,
14:26but we have all these cabinets installed already.
14:28And right now, our plan was the dining room in the middle.
14:30So should I be building a knee wall and having the bench banquette there?
14:34I mean, let's do the knee wall, but then add a window.
14:38A window?
14:39An interior window.
14:42Where?
14:43Right on top of the knee wall.
14:45Can you build, like, a French window on top,
14:47so that you can still see the view through the window here,
14:51but we have two separate spaces?
14:53That's a lot of work.
14:59Okay, so you're actually screwing this into the floor right now?
15:02Yes.
15:02Are you sure it's in the right spot?
15:04Yes.
15:05This is going through the flooring?
15:06Yes.
15:07Ah!
15:14We're still going to eat right here.
15:15Right.
15:17So what it's going to do is add more to your time.
15:20We're planning on doing a upholstered banquette.
15:23But I think that is going to add a lot of visual interest.
15:26And I'm tired.
15:27You tired?
15:29I'm tired.
15:29Yeah, I'm tired.
15:30I got to build something else now.
15:31This is a lot of work for Liz.
15:35I'm concerned.
15:36We have to build a banquette, finish up the coconut wall,
15:39and style the entire space.
15:40So there's so much to do.
15:42And I'm concerned that I don't have time to execute to my normal ability.
15:54Everyone's been putting in a tremendous amount of effort.
15:56So we're taking the teams offside.
15:58Everybody needs to get out of the office every now and then.
16:00The competitors might think they're getting a break.
16:03But this might break them.
16:04Oh!
16:05How'd you come up with that?
16:06That was good.
16:07Perfecting a kitchen build is all about sharp decision making.
16:12So we're putting your skills to the test.
16:15Right here we have an obstacle course.
16:17And the first team to make their way through all three gates wins.
16:21Seems simple enough, right?
16:23But there's a catch.
16:24At every gate, you'll be faced with a choice between two tools.
16:28First up, use a saw or crowbar.
16:31Which tool will bring down those planks first?
16:34Your next choice is the metal chains.
16:36Is it a bolt cutter or a wrench?
16:38And finally, for the drywall, use a hammer or a screwdriver.
16:42So think strategically and choose wisely.
16:46The first team to complete the obstacle course will receive help from a professional.
16:52A skilled, talented professional like myself.
16:57Or you might get stuck picking Brian.
16:59Once you're through the course, just sprint down and grab the cutout of whoever you want.
17:04One of us, whoever you choose, will come to your lake house for one hour to help move things along.
17:10For the first time ever, one of us is going to get put to work by you guys.
17:13So cool!
17:15Choose wisely.
17:17Okay, let's head to your color-coordinated starting blocks.
17:21Melissa knows how to use every one of these tools.
17:24I have no idea how to use some of these tools, and we have to take turns doing this.
17:29Okay, is everybody ready?
17:30Yep.
17:31Yeah!
17:31All right.
17:32On your marks.
17:33Get set.
17:35Go!
17:36Let's go.
17:37Let's go.
17:37You got it.
17:38Okay, Thomas is in there with the saw.
17:41We've got Melissa with the pry bar.
17:44Oh, Meridat is in there going for it.
17:47You look good.
17:47It's coming out.
17:48Good job.
17:49Keep going.
17:50No one's through yet.
17:51No one's through.
17:53Let's go.
17:53Let's go.
17:54Taylor Verdad, first through.
17:55Okay, let's go.
17:56Tatiana Thomas, close behind.
17:59Keep going.
18:00Go, go, go.
18:00Okay, he's going with the snips.
18:01Snips.
18:02He's going to go with the wrench.
18:04We need this win.
18:05Mm-hmm.
18:05Any advantage is helpful.
18:07Mario, you have to come through.
18:12Go, go, go.
18:13Good job.
18:14Yes.
18:14Use that leverage for the next one.
18:16Go.
18:17Okay, help me.
18:18There you go.
18:19Keep going.
18:19Smash, smash, smash.
18:20I'm letting all my frustrations out on this drywall.
18:23Aggression, aggression.
18:24Note to self, do not get in the way with Tatiana and a hammer.
18:27Okay, let's go.
18:29Taylor Verdad to the drywall, unscrewing very carefully.
18:33Thank God.
18:34Liz and Shallan are through.
18:36Let's go.
18:37Go, Sean.
18:38Okay, run.
18:39Go.
18:40Go, go, go.
18:41Down.
18:41Down.
18:43Oh.
18:43Hey, there you go.
18:44There you go, there you go.
18:45Let's go.
18:46Okay, go.
18:47Push it.
18:48There she goes.
18:50Who are they going to pick?
18:51Oh, yeah.
18:52Traders.
18:53Traders.
18:54So smart.
18:55Ha, ha.
18:56We're going to pick Scott.
18:58I feel, especially with the short-term rental background, it'll be the best choice for us
19:02moving forward.
19:03Was I the only one that saw the two-by-fours?
19:05Yes.
19:05Yeah.
19:11Go on.
19:12Are those coconuts?
19:14Yes.
19:16Are you making a drink?
19:17Ha, ha, ha, ha.
19:18This coconut wall is way more time consuming than I anticipated, but I know that it is worth
19:23the time that we're putting in because it's going to be that wow factor as soon as Scott
19:26and Brian step in the kitchen.
19:28The coconuts are actually real coconuts.
19:31I created this jig, the Cocoanut Buster 9000 to support the coconut enough so that she
19:38can put really good for us because those coconut shells are super hard.
19:41What did I sign myself up for?
19:44The coconut wall is something that I'm really excited about.
19:47I think it's a very clever way to separate the open concept without losing the view.
19:52It looks good.
19:54As my grandmother would say, could you scooch it just a taint?
19:57Why did they scoot everything a taint this way to get it in there?
20:00That's a real measurement.
20:05When it comes to the kitchen and dining room, it is the most valuable space in the home.
20:09The install has to be executed with excellence.
20:12This is a huge ask in a week.
20:14Yeah.
20:14But I'm confident all the teams are going to get it done.
20:20Boo.
20:21How are you doing?
20:22Hi.
20:23How are we today?
20:25We're good.
20:26We're doing good.
20:26A little stressed out.
20:27So this is your banquette.
20:29Do you want to walk me through how you're doing the install here?
20:33Hello.
20:34Hi.
20:35So let's talk about this banquette.
20:36It looks custom.
20:37It's a complete custom banquette.
20:39So right now the plan is to basically do a finished panel on either side.
20:44Okay.
20:44And then a finished panel in front, proud.
20:46And then finishing the edges with our edge band.
20:50Okay.
20:51I see issues already with what's going to happen here.
20:54Your back framing is a bit proud.
20:56I'm feeling a little stretched thin on just the volume of things I've got to get built.
21:00But we'll get it done.
21:01I can tell you it's the first thing I'm going to look for when I walk in.
21:04Is that cap?
21:05Yeah.
21:05We wanted to get the stone backsplash to happen there.
21:08Real stone with kind of a German schmear technique.
21:12And you've got to do it right to impress you guys.
21:14Doing a schmear, which is a multi-stage process.
21:17So you're going to grout over the stone to give it a rustic look.
21:21I apparently prefer to take years off of Thomas's life.
21:24So this is a typical designer contractor relationship.
21:27Pretty much.
21:28Yeah.
21:29We've laid some out in the bedroom there.
21:31We go take a look.
21:32Let's take a look.
21:35Okay.
21:36So this is your stone.
21:38We just quickly laid this out.
21:40Kind of an example of what we're thinking.
21:41You've chosen what I would consider a fairly aggressive veneer.
21:45It's not smooth.
21:46It is above the banquette.
21:48So this is above your shoulders.
21:50And these sharp edges could possibly hurt somebody.
21:54I can tell by Scott's face he's a little worried about our stone wall.
22:03So for your rock wall, I've done the schmear.
22:07You know, it's a choice and it's a lot of work.
22:10And it never works out exactly the way you want.
22:13Between installing the stone, grouting the stone,
22:16schmearing the stone and getting everything else done,
22:19there is not a minute to spare.
22:21Scott's not sure about the German smear.
22:24I choose to be optimistic and delusional at the same time about it.
22:30So this just doesn't feel as secure.
22:32I'm working on this banquette and I'm concerned.
22:35We have to secure the back so it doesn't lean.
22:38So the rope could come down and like behind.
22:41I'm just thinking about what Scott and Brian said about execution.
22:46And me too.
22:49I'm making the plaster wall feature for the kitchen.
22:53Okay, cool. I like this.
22:54I want to be able to put my own little stamp of my culture in our dining room.
22:59So I'm going to lay out three canvases and paint Hito, which is the Japanese character for people or person.
23:06I love making art.
23:09We both come from immigrant families and it's important that we encourage a space that promotes gathering and inclusivity.
23:19You look like an artiste.
23:21I'm literally shaking in my boots right now.
23:25Oh, this is for the finish.
23:27Yeah.
23:28Today's the day we get help from a pro.
23:30We got Scott coming in to help us out.
23:32Since he's here, let's put him to work.
23:33I think he can actually help out with this Venetian plaster.
23:36With these range hoods, they vibrate.
23:38Mm-hmm.
23:38And if it's too thin, it'll crack.
23:40Mm-hmm.
23:41I'm going to layer it on.
23:42I'm a short-term rental expert and I'll supervise.
23:45I know we do have to get some work done, but this is our time.
23:50I definitely would love to pick your brain.
23:52I don't even know if an hour would ever be enough time.
23:55But for people that are in the short-term rental world, everyone thinks they're getting into it for passive income,
24:01but it's not passive income.
24:02No, it's more active.
24:04It is almost the most amount of work, maybe the most, because people's expectations are that you are a hotel.
24:11You have to be able to offer almost everything you can get in a hotel in your short-term rentals.
24:18It's long-term with all of these, whether it's a short-term rental, a multi-family, you better be in
24:24it for the long haul.
24:25Yeah.
24:26This was a great advantage to win, just to get some knowledge from them about real estate investing.
24:30I think it'll help us in the future.
24:32I got a 16th on here.
24:35Oops, there's my first trip.
24:36It's looking amazing.
24:37This is the best challenge win by far.
24:40If Brian was here...
24:43Complaints.
24:44Complaints.
24:45Complaints.
24:52Like there.
24:53Okay.
24:56My pineapple chandelier!
24:58It's looking great so far, but it takes time.
25:04When Brian came into our kitchen, we were talking about the panels, and he had mentioned, because of the detail
25:09of our countertops, I have to be very cautious of how I cut the paneling.
25:13Wow, Melissa, this looks amazing.
25:15Thank you.
25:16Look at this curb.
25:17You did such a good job.
25:18Yeah.
25:18What about this?
25:19Are you going to fix this off?
25:19Yeah.
25:19Okay, perfect.
25:22I don't want to do it.
25:23I don't want to do it yet.
25:25It looks kind of whack.
25:26Like here.
25:27Look.
25:27So, I've left this huge white space of a wall to the last minute.
25:32I have these beautiful ceramic bells, and I want to hang them, but so far I'm a little stuck.
25:39I'm just hesitant, because once it's in the wall, it's in the wall, and it's a for-sure thing.
25:45So, I'm just questioning everything at this point.
25:48We're almost at the end here, and we've got to get them on the wall.
25:51So, what is it that you're going for?
25:53Like, explain to me so I can try to help you.
25:55I just don't know if these were the right move to put here.
26:03It looks like an afterthought.
26:05I'm not sure about it.
26:06The bell's sitting on the wall, and I don't like that.
26:09I wish my hooks were longer.
26:12At home, I would take a moment, take a step back, and kind of, like, think about everything.
26:17Here, that is not possible at all.
26:20So, we've got to think fast.
26:22Whatever we're doing, we need to decide, like, now.
26:25We need something on this wall.
26:26Until they hate it, and then you are.
26:28Oh, well.
26:29Then they hate it.
26:34We're doing a channel upholstered banquette.
26:39Oh, no.
26:42We still have one more of these to upholster, and this is the end of the fabric.
26:48Liz, we don't have enough upholstery.
26:50Who don't?
26:51We only have enough for the long side.
26:53We don't have enough for the short side.
26:54So, we're going to have to pivot.
26:56We had the other color.
26:58This one is a velvet material, and I think mixing that is going to look weird.
27:03This is the same grain.
27:05Uh-huh.
27:06Because I bought this for the chairs.
27:08I didn't buy this for this banquette.
27:10We're out of fabric.
27:11That's impossible.
27:12So, the other fabric it is.
27:14Velvet on the top, party on the bottom.
27:17And hopefully, Scott and Brian don't notice.
27:27This is the last day of this challenge.
27:30We have so much to do.
27:31We have a chance to take this.
27:35Oh, my God.
27:35I'm so stressed out.
27:36Too many thinking things.
27:39Okay.
27:39So, the right side needs to come up.
27:41Does it look straight?
27:42I can't tell.
27:42If you trust the laser, then I trust the laser.
27:45I can't tell because I can't see.
27:47When I go in front of the laser, I block it.
27:49I had a nightmare.
27:51I realized the banquette cushions are square to square, and so it's going to have an issue
27:55opening fully.
27:57Shoot.
27:57We're so behind.
27:59Marcy starts styling, not helping me.
28:02I understand there's a lot to do, but in order for me to get momentum to finish this kitchen,
28:07I need to style something.
28:09Okay, teams, you've got one hour to finish your kitchen and dining room.
28:13Three, two, one.
28:14Okay.
28:15Let's get to it.
28:15We have so much to do.
28:16I'm feeling super anxious, nervous, excited, all the feels.
28:21Okay, teams, here we go.
28:23It's five, four, three, two, one.
28:28Tools down and come meet us at the fire pit.
28:31Yes!
28:31Good work, good work.
28:32Good work, good work.
28:34We have such a good chance.
28:35Wow.
28:35Oh my God.
28:36Take it in for a second here.
28:37I know.
28:38It looks good.
28:39Let's go.
28:43We left it all in the field.
28:45We did the best we could, and I'm really, really proud of what we were able to put forward.
28:50I think we smashed it.
28:51I'm feeling good about the kitchen, but, you know, we had a few challenges along the way.
28:55I know that we both worked hard and gave it our all.
28:58And we got some good competitors, so we'll see.
29:01Congratulations on finishing another major space in your lake houses, your kitchens and dining rooms.
29:06Yes!
29:06Good job.
29:09This week's guest judge, they know a thing or two about turning ordinary spaces into showstoppers.
29:15This interior designer brings fearless style and unforgettable flair to Scott's Vacation House Rules.
29:23So please give a warm welcome to Debra Salmoni.
29:26Debra!
29:27Hello!
29:28Hey, Debra!
29:29Hi!
29:30Hi!
29:31Oh, hello.
29:31Nice to see you.
29:33Hi, Debra.
29:33Hi, Scotty.
29:34Hi!
29:36Debra, it's always great to see you.
29:38I think what we want to know is what are you looking for?
29:41I'm always looking for function, something that's stylish, unique.
29:45It's vacation properties, so if you want a space where they're like,
29:48this is our space and I can't wait to make it feel like home.
29:52All right, we ready to take a look?
29:53Let's do this.
29:54We'll be back.
29:58So here we are with Taylor and Mare Dad.
30:01Oh!
30:02This is beautiful!
30:04This is something.
30:06Oh, I love the hood.
30:10The Japanese theme, I feel, you always get that sense that it's history matched with very modern vibes.
30:17Simple.
30:18Simplicity.
30:18Yeah, and I think they pulled that off incredibly.
30:20There's a note over there, I noticed.
30:22What does that say?
30:23Uh-oh.
30:23Uh-oh.
30:26Dear guests, at Moonlight Bay we wanted more than just a place to stay.
30:30We wanted to create a feeling in a home.
30:32One special piece is a set of three canvases that together reveal the Japanese character Hito,
30:36meaning person or human being.
30:38Oh.
30:39So it refers to Deb and I, and warmly Taylor and Mare Dad.
30:43I like that there's another layer of meaning to it.
30:46I think that people will connect with that.
30:47I love the texture behind the artwork.
30:50That is a high contrast, which I'm really appreciating.
30:53Oh, that's very cool.
30:55This banquette, when I did the check-in, they were working on it.
30:58Uh-huh.
30:58I think your dad was having some issues with the finishing and with the material and what have you.
31:02But it looks like he has pulled it together.
31:05It almost looks manufactured.
31:06So they've chosen banquette in the corner and it works.
31:09It does. It works.
31:10It's a nice use of space because, truthfully, you're on vacation.
31:14So you don't need this oversized, dedicated dining room area per se.
31:19Yes.
31:19And this is a nice-sized kitchen.
31:20They haven't really compromised anything.
31:22And I do love the backsplash with the stone shelf and the micro-cement hood.
31:28It's very clean.
31:29Very well done.
31:30Yeah, it's well done.
31:31It's very hard to find a problem with the workmanship.
31:34The craftsmanship.
31:35They've done an incredible job.
31:36So I do love a curved island.
31:39A little bit of a missed opportunity with storage here, right?
31:42There's no storage in the bottom?
31:44No, it's hollow.
31:46Where do you put your stemware?
31:48Where do you put your glasses?
31:50There's no upper cabinets.
31:51I mean, they have baskets for storage under the banquette, but is that really enough?
31:55Losing the upper cabinetry to give that very cool look, we lost the function.
32:01I like that they've done the archway, which kind of matches the end of the island, which
32:08matches the dining room table.
32:10There's a softness to all the edges in here.
32:12Yeah.
32:13I definitely feel that Japanese vibe.
32:15Spending just $28,000, Taylor and Meredad took an intentional minimalist approach.
32:21But will their less is more strategy stand out enough to impress the judges or get overshadowed?
32:28Here we have Marcy and Melissa's.
32:33What?
32:34I already like it.
32:35We have not seen this before.
32:38Oh.
32:39Oh my goodness.
32:42This is very much the vibe of Marcy and Melissa.
32:46It's traditional, but there's modern elements.
32:48It feels very warm and inviting.
32:50This is stunning.
32:52You have a pantry, like the storage in this kitchen.
32:56That's gold.
32:57It's fantastic.
32:59Here's the thing.
32:59I love the adventurous layout.
33:01Having the sink as its own station is never something I would do, but I think it works
33:06here.
33:07This layout makes the kitchen feel so grand.
33:10Now your eye is being drawn up to the ceiling, you know, really emphasizing the height because
33:15we have these beautiful long cabinetry.
33:17It feels wider.
33:18Here's where I have a couple challenges.
33:21This island feels slightly puny.
33:23It is nice to be able to have like a casual seating space, but this just feels like something
33:27that might get knocked over or moved around.
33:30I don't know if I love the backsplash.
33:32It doesn't marry well, and on this side you can see it just doesn't fit together extremely
33:38well.
33:39That's going to be something that will really bother Melissa because we did talk about this
33:44and the need for this to be perfect.
33:47Perfect.
33:47One other feature that I'm actually really digging is that there's a defined line where
33:54the kitchen and the eat-in kitchen area end, but it's still super visible.
33:59Like they have not interrupted the view whatsoever, but they've made it feel really cozy.
34:03Yeah, and it just creates a little bit of that anchor point.
34:06Now the design detour also mentioned storage and I don't see any storage yet.
34:11Is there storage under there?
34:12No.
34:13Uh-oh.
34:27Oh, there you go.
34:29So that's on a hinge.
34:30Does it open though?
34:31Ooh.
34:32Oh.
34:33Accessing the storage isn't so great.
34:34There's a bit of a bunch up with the upholstery.
34:37And you could really hurt your fingies.
34:39The banquette in the middle of the room, that's the biggest risk of all.
34:43And to me, this is either you love it or you hate it.
34:46And this is what's either going to make it or break it for them.
34:49Marcy and Melissa lead the pack with a $47,000 spend this week.
34:54It's a big move that puts real pressure on their remaining budget.
35:00This would be Shallan and Liz.
35:02Whoa.
35:05Wow.
35:06Color.
35:07Here we go.
35:08Whoa.
35:09We got coconuts.
35:11This is a party here.
35:13This is a party.
35:13And we're all invited.
35:16You're on vacation.
35:17You're partying it up.
35:19You're making mimosas.
35:20They've got this beautiful white stone countertop.
35:24It feels very functional the way it's set up.
35:27I love the cabinetry color.
35:29I think it is bold.
35:30It screams vacation.
35:32I'm not loving the bamboo on the sides.
35:34I feel like it's just an element that wasn't needed.
35:38It's a little beach bar.
35:39It is.
35:40It's a little tiki beach bar-y when we do have the coconuts adding that division.
35:45That's well done.
35:47That could have been a huge miss.
35:49It's charming and cute and fun.
35:51Whereas I find that the bamboo looks a little arts and craftsy.
35:56I'm slightly bamboozled.
35:59I saw them working on these coconuts.
36:01I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out.
36:03So they did secure it in there.
36:05I could almost hang from those.
36:07But this, the quality of the work on the back of this banquette, it's not sturdy.
36:12It's not stable.
36:13I feel like it's just a sheet of plywood that's been nailed in place.
36:16Overall, this type of energy is off the charts phenomenal.
36:21And this place is going to get a tremendous amount of traction online because it's so fun and it's so
36:28exciting.
36:29Yeah.
36:29The challenge is, is what it looks like going to be good enough for people to look past some of
36:35the quality issues.
36:36Yeah.
36:36It cost Shalon and Liz $37,000 to bring their tropical kitchen to life.
36:41They're betting big that their bold choices will charm the judges and get them the win.
36:48Tatiana and Thomas.
36:50Tatiana and Thomas.
36:52Tatiana and Thomas.
36:53Tatiana and Thomas.
36:54Oh.
36:54Okay.
36:57Wow.
37:00This is classically upscale.
37:03Evet.
37:04Mütür kılır.
37:05I mean, green is my favorite color.
37:08The wood cabinetry,
37:10beautiful accented with the green.
37:12I love the curved island.
37:14I think that's a really nice detail.
37:16It just adds a little softness to the space.
37:18My personal favorite is the choice
37:19of countertop and backsplash.
37:21I like that this is actually real natural stone.
37:24Here we have an experienced host, right?
37:27We've got a welcome basket full of goodies.
37:29I like the card, all the good things.
37:32Laminated.
37:33Come on, be your host.
37:37Nobody will want to stay here.
37:39This is a necessity of every rental property.
37:42You need that rental property Bible.
37:44I love the natural stone on that bankette wall.
37:47Textural, but understated.
37:50And they wanted to attempt a schmear,
37:52which I have to say worked out extremely well.
37:54They've got the schmear, they've got the schmores.
37:57And they've got a schmuck now too.
38:01One thing I don't love over here,
38:03I almost think like these two materials,
38:05they're too similar.
38:06Too similar.
38:07To join there.
38:08I feel like they might have run out of time for this wall.
38:11We're missing an opportunity for storage
38:13or something different.
38:14The decoration here, I feel like this is an empty wall.
38:17Mm-hmm.
38:18But what this kitchen really needs is less cowbell.
38:21This is a large bankette, that's for sure.
38:24Yeah.
38:24It's cozy, like this has got nice cushiony coziness.
38:28Oh yeah, I got a nice big drawer here.
38:30Oh, push out.
38:30You've got little Rufus bowls.
38:33Pet friendly rental.
38:35Tatiana and Thomas leaned into upscale finishes this week,
38:38spending a solid $38,000.
38:41They'll have to be extra mindful how they use their remaining budget.
38:44The caliber of these kitchens is outstanding,
38:47so it's going to be a tough decision.
38:49Yeah.
38:49But they're waiting and we need to pick a winner.
38:57Okay, we're back and I have to say, you did not make this easy for us.
39:03You all brought some great ideas, made some fantastic decisions,
39:07and you executed these kitchens beautifully.
39:10Taylor and Mare Dad, what a crisp, clean, and inviting space.
39:15I love the vibe that you're going for.
39:17The dark countertops, the curve.
39:19I think you knocked the banquette challenge out of the park.
39:22I really appreciated the minimalist design.
39:26There's gorgeous elements like the original artwork,
39:28the hood feature with that micro cement, and the stone shelf.
39:32I absolutely loved.
39:34Where I would be giving you some feedback would be,
39:37there's very minimal storage.
39:40Maybe either side of your range hood, there could have been a shelf.
39:43Sometimes the practicality does have to get included in the design.
39:47Okay, sure.
39:48Thank you.
39:49Shallan and Liz.
39:50When I walked into your kitchen, I was transported into Island Life.
39:55The cabinetry color is amazing.
39:58The coconuts, it is a energetic, vibrant kitchen.
40:03And I love that, especially when you're on a vacation.
40:06And when it comes to a vacation rental property, this will be the most shared.
40:09Absolutely.
40:11People pay for it before they even get here.
40:14So it better speak to them digitally as well.
40:17And yours is going to speak volumes.
40:19Just know when to stop.
40:21Yes.
40:22I would have preferred no bamboo.
40:24I think it would have allowed some of those other really special moments to shine a little bit more.
40:29Scott really gave your coconut wall the test.
40:33You know, they're really well secured up top.
40:34And then when we sat in the banquette, the back of the banquette, you know, had some structural issues.
40:41All in all, I love all the different textures, the different colors.
40:44Super exciting.
40:45I love the vibe in there.
40:46Thank you.
40:46It's a really good job.
40:47Marcy and Melissa, your kitchen layout is amazing.
40:55Thank you.
40:56In terms of spatial planning, your kitchen looked so grand.
41:00You've managed to pack the most amount of storage, the most amount of cabinet space.
41:05It just went on forever.
41:07Very unique.
41:08Very different.
41:09Thank you.
41:11Now.
41:11Yes.
41:12Uh-oh.
41:13The shiplap backsplash felt like a bit of a disconnect in the space.
41:17I loved the countertops.
41:19I loved the cabinets.
41:20But it felt like maybe too many things were happening.
41:22Mm-hmm.
41:23On the banquette challenge, you put the storage in there, a fairly simple bench.
41:27But it was kind of hard to open with the upholstery on top.
41:30And that was our design detour.
41:33Tatiana and Thomas.
41:35Walk into your kitchen space, you can immediately feel that West Coast vibe.
41:39It's warm, certainly inviting.
41:40Countertops are beautiful.
41:42I really like your choice of hardware.
41:44My favorite color is green.
41:45Clearly, your favorite color is green.
41:49Your kitchen has a beautiful green cabinetry to it.
41:53You have this natural stone behind the banquette.
41:56As a designer, I absolutely love and adore.
42:00In the gift basket upon arrival, like, that's high-quality, great stuff.
42:05Thank you.
42:06Cowbell wall.
42:07I felt like something was missing.
42:09And again.
42:10The cows.
42:11The cows, yes.
42:12It felt like an afterthought.
42:14Yeah.
42:14This is the most difficult decision we've ever had to make.
42:21Like, can we just take a moment over here?
42:23We need a minute.
42:26By the way, I'm very proud of you.
42:28This just goes to show how tight the competition is.
42:32The fashion.
42:32And just how talented everyone else is, too.
42:33Totally.
42:35At this point right now, we have some very good competition.
42:38So, best team wins.
42:41Oh.
42:41Oh.
42:42It usually gets worse the farther in the competition we get.
42:45Oof.
42:46The winners of Renovation Resort's Kitchen and Dining Room Challenge are...
42:58Taylor and Meredith.
43:06Congratulations, Taylor and Meredith.
43:08You've earned something truly magical.
43:10A vacation to the Disneyland Resort in California.
43:17It's a place for guests of all ages to discover and make memories for a lifetime.
43:22We're going to Disneyland!
43:24I'm so excited.
43:26Okay, teams.
43:27I'm sure you're already thinking about what room you're going to do next, but stop.
43:32Because we're going to switch things up.
43:35So, fuel up and recharge because you're not going to be ready for what's coming next.
43:46Coming up on Renovation Resort, the teams face a surprise build like never before.
43:52Your challenge is to build bunkies.
43:55Having to start from the ground up.
43:57Got no bunkies in Texas.
43:59Some are out of their element.
44:00Beast mode.
44:03While others struggle to get it together.
44:05I don't know.
44:06And as pressure mounts...
44:07We don't have enough.
44:09Teams are left unsure if they'll make it to the end.
44:11Sorry, boys.
44:12You're not getting any power unless you bring us that ladder back.
44:22Absolutely.
44:22I won't have enough.
44:23Let's try it in here though.
44:24Is there any way to be able to go?
44:24I think we're so, respectively.
