00:00A global celebration is marking 20 years of Xi'an Jiao Tong Liverpool University, known as XJTLU, founded in 2006
00:09as a partnership between the University of Liverpool and Xi'an Jiao Tong University in China.
00:14It's grown from just 730 students in 2008 to around 25,000 today.
00:21We had some dragon dancers followed by lion dancers and a great celebration and also asking the students to give
00:29their wishes back to XJTLU for now and for the future.
00:33University of Liverpool Vice-Chancellor Professor Tim Jones says the venture has become one of the most successful transnational education
00:40programmes in the world, bringing significant economic and cultural benefits to the city region.
00:46Those links have been recognised by Liverpool City Council. Earlier this year, XJTLU was granted the freedom of the city,
00:53Liverpool's highest civic honour, in recognition of what the council described as its exceptional contribution to the city's life and
01:00reputation.
01:02Councillor Nick Small, Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, said the university has played a key role
01:07in strengthening links between Liverpool and China over the past 20 years.
01:12Although XJTLU has a direct benefit for the University of Liverpool in terms of bringing students in from all over
01:19the world and experiencing that cultural piece, those students, of course, are living in Liverpool and they're experiencing the culture
01:25of Liverpool, a city which is already rooted and got connections through to China.
01:32The Year in China programme enables University of Liverpool students to broaden their academic experience by extending their degree and
01:39studying at XJTLU.
01:41Starting in 2016, more than 380 students across 24 university departments have participated.
01:48Through these programmes, University of Liverpool degrees have been delivered transnationally since 2006, creating pathways for thousands of graduates to
01:56pursue further study and careers worldwide.
01:58There's a huge cultural piece that goes across that. We learn different things from the way things are taught there
02:04within that environment and we learn from each other.
02:08There's been lots of exchanges over the years of people coming back and forth.
02:12A University of Liverpool delegation is also travelling to China to present the university with a bronze liver bed sculpture.
02:20University leaders says it symbolises the relationship between East and West and reflects a partnership they believe will continue shaping
02:27education and innovation for decades to come.
02:30Liverpool accredits all the degree programmes and puts the quality assurance on there.
02:35We are always seeing what they're trying to do and always seeing where their next steps are.
02:39And then, as I've said before, they move at a huge pace.
02:43They're seeing the innovations. They're trying to be the educators of tomorrow in that space.
02:47And there's some really entrepreneurial things that they're doing out there that are thinking about what the industries of tomorrow
02:54need and how to educate their students to go on to those.
02:58We heard it as well.
