In the heart of London's East End, Danish designer Nina Tolstrup converted a 40m2 carpenter workshop into a hideaway for more than just herself. Constructing enclosed sleeping pods and filling the home with bursts of colour and upcycled furniture, in a perfect example of mini living she created a small footprint luxurious home.

00:00This building was a carpenter workshop and as we have our house down the road, I knew
00:05the carpenter very well.
00:07And when he retired, I got the opportunity to buy the workshop.
00:24The townhouse here is 40 square meters, it has a footprint of 20 square meters.
00:32It was always two floors but we lifted the roof half a meter so we could get a mezzanine
00:44Instead of making a bedroom with walls and doors, I would make these built-in bed pots.
00:52When you go to bed, you are kind of enclosed so it feels like a tree house or another little
00:59house inside the house.
01:04I like to use colours but in kind of more interventions like colourful chairs or, I mean, we have Jo
01:12Niemeyer's
01:13pictures on the wall here and downstairs, very graphical but also quite kind of primary colours.
01:21The bathroom is bright yellow, yellow is kind of, I find a very happy colour, like the sunflower
01:28and, you know, it's the sunshine.
01:31At the same time, the house is quite calm with its white walls and wood but still some playfulness
01:38with some different accents of colours.
01:42I furnish the house with chairs and also tables that is upcycled from old chairs and tables that
01:49are picked up in the street or in junk shops.
01:53This is frames that I have stripped.
01:55I made up the seats and the backs and do the upholsteries.
02:00They're quite cartoonish and fun, you know, in their shapes and a bit exaggerated shapes.
02:05It gives the space more personality.
02:10The lamps are designed for this house here.
02:13It's designed in a square wooden section, sectioned in oak.
02:19To maximise the light in the space, we have put in a big skylight with the south facing,
02:27which we then also transfer down to the lower ground floor with a big glass panel in the floor.
02:39Like in any small spaces, you have to find places where you can put your storage, kind
02:43of hide it away.
02:44So here we have storage under the bed, you've got storage under the stairs.
02:50In the kitchen, we have obviously a dishwasher and a washing machine and appliances that
02:58are needed.
02:59We've got a hot boiling tap, so we don't need to have a kettle there.
03:05In small spaces, every little square inch matters.
03:10This is more like designing a boat or a caravan.
03:13How do you create comfortable bedding?
03:16How do you create enough storage and comfortable seating that doesn't take up the space you
03:22haven't got?
03:22And I think the compromise is that if it's well designed, it doesn't feel smaller.
