Tara was designed around large fluid spaces and compartmentalised, functional storage and furniture. White surfaces and metal cladding reflect and diffuse light inside the 30m2 space, allowing light to open up the bathroom and kitchen despite having few windows. Everything fits neatly together, all to make the best possible use of the apartments existing space.

00:09Tara is a building that was completed in 1920 in the art deco style. This apartment is located in
00:17Elizabeth Bay which is in very close proximity to the city and on the doorstep of this apartment is
00:23wonderful amenity, restaurants, cafes, everything that you could want with it at your fingertips
00:27basically. This apartment is a 30 square meter space. The layout exists primarily as it was.
00:39The client was very inspired by minimalist interior design and really wanted a very clean
00:45and crisp and contemporary product for the design of his space. Our idea was to shift the bulk of the
00:52apartment to the perimeter walls or to the outside walls to create a really large open and fluid
00:57space through the middle of the apartment. We embraced I guess the idea of studio living rather
01:03than create unnecessary or deliberate delineation or zoning within the space. Running along one length
01:10of wall beyond the kitchen is a function wall and it contains a four-seat sofa and it has a
01:17pull-out
01:17chaise. There is storage underneath and the bed is quite unique in that it folds down over the sofa
01:23when it comes time for sleeping. The function wall wraps almost the couch and the bed to make full use
01:31of the height and ensure that no space was left unused for storage where possible. For the design of the
01:38function wall we wanted something very robust which is why we decided to clad it entirely in metal. It's a
01:44very very contemporary look and feel. It feels very sharp, very bespoke and very unique.
01:52We've used a very strong white bench top because it's located at the base of the singular window to
01:58the studio. What that does is help to flood the space with light and the bench top and splash back
02:02reads a little bit like a like a giant lantern. It has a glow. We've employed a number of compact
02:09appliances and everything in the kitchen is concealed. There's a washer dryer combination so there's a
02:15pull-out dishwasher, there's a microwave but also a very generous sized fridge. We decided to use frosted
02:23glass for the bathroom door as a as a mechanism or tool to be able to borrow light from the
02:28window in
02:28the bathroom and bring more light into the studio and what's really beautiful about the glass is that
02:32at night when the lights are on in the bathroom it helps to illuminate the space almost like a giant
02:37lamp.
02:39All of the surfaces in the bathroom are finished in the same tile creates a very unique geometric
02:44pattern and helps to make the bathroom feel much larger than in fact is. The apartment overall presents
02:52as a very simple solution but it's in fact there's a great deal of consideration goes into getting all
02:57of the details right. The way that the blind rolls down just behind the tap or the concealed strip
03:03lighting in the shower right down to the small details like the push touch doors in the kitchen
03:09or the concealed finger pull handles. It's very important to be able to make use of existing
03:14building stock and improve upon that so that people are very comfortable living in our cities.
