00:00The inspiration behind the whole concept is that spirit of modernism, and in particular
00:06Le Corbusier, the famous French architect, his saying of the house is a machine for living.
00:14Yuko is Australia's first co-living brand.
00:18It's designed for anybody really who wants to feel like they're part of a community but
00:23still have their own space.
00:26This building was actually designed as a boarding house, and it was about 70% complete when
00:32our clients wanted to start this co-living space.
00:35The layouts, et cetera, were set as far as bathrooms and kitchens and walls, et cetera,
00:41so what we had to work with was within the shelves.
00:45So in this building there are 33 units.
00:48This unit is 19 square metres in total space, and it has a generous balcony of about six
00:54square metres.
00:56The whole apartment is about flexibility.
01:00We wanted to create as big as free space as possible where you could work, you could entertain,
01:06you could relax, you could dance in your apartment.
01:10We decided to raise the bed and put everything except for the bathroom and the kitchen underneath
01:16the bed.
01:16You've got full-size wardrobe, a dining table, and a sofa.
01:22All custom designed to fit underneath this queen-size bed.
01:28The sofa's on casters, and once you pull it out of its track, you can put it anywhere.
01:33When weight is applied to it, it automatically applies the brakes.
01:37We played around with cushions with seating angles to get a two-seater ergonomic sofa that
01:43you could sit in comfortably, lie back to watch TV.
01:47The other thing we added was these tracks.
01:49Once you push the sofa to the start of the cupboard, you would be guided in nice and straight.
01:55The steps that lead up to the bed are all drawers.
02:00The wardrobe is broken up into one-third shelving space, and then the rest is a hanging rack.
02:08We drop the bottom of the wardrobe right to the bottom of the structure, so you can put
02:13shoes down across the bottom of your wardrobe.
02:16The panelling is there predominantly to create that feeling of a bedroom, but it also forms
02:22a ledge.
02:23And then we put these hooks up, so our cushions have got straps, and you can hang them up on
02:28the wall.
02:30In order to give the space some personality, we created this one unit, which is a shelf,
02:36some hooks, a pin board.
02:38So it allows people to bring in their own personal touches and make the place feel like home.
02:44Again another item that we designed is a bookshelf unit that can turn into a desk.
02:49You don't need to move your books, you've got a compact desk to work on.
02:54The apartment also contains a small kitchenette to prepare meals.
02:58If residents want to cook a bigger meal for entertaining, there's a large semi-commercial
03:03kitchen in the communal room that they can use.
03:06The unit also has a small compact bathroom.
03:09There's communal laundry facilities on the ground floor.
03:12We didn't design this space for a specific person in mind, and that's exactly why everything
03:18is moveable.
03:20What a project like this does is that it means you live in a small space, but a space that's
03:25designed to suit you and to give you freedom.
03:28The modernist architects wanted to solve problems in the most beautiful way, and that's what
03:33inspired us to do what we've done with this project.
