After England's defeat to Romania, the pressure is on England to win. Colombia have the same record.
Transcript
00:07It's time, time for the men in red to stand up and be counted.
00:13Defeat against Romania was regrettable, defeat against Colombia would be terminal.
00:20England expects, expects victory, expects qualification.
00:25Alan Shearer leading the line against the tall Bermudez.
00:28Ron Atkinson alongside me tonight.
00:30Yes, they're playing in the three-at-the-back style that Glenn Hoddle's preferred with Anderton,
00:36and he was still pushing on his wing-backs.
00:42A poor goal kick by Seaman, Preciado couldn't quite respond.
00:46Taken as much by surprise as the rest of us.
00:50Paul Innes finding Darren Anderton.
00:55Owen trying to make a break beyond the...
00:58Back four, and it's Scholes with the shot, which the goalkeeper saw later in the day.
01:02It hit him rather than vice versa.
01:05A sweet hit from Paul Scholes.
01:07On the ball again.
01:11Hooked in towards Shearer.
01:13Wanted in the air, it's an easier take this time for Mondragon.
01:23Exhilarating shot by Paul Scholes.
01:26Something out of nothing.
01:30Anderton.
01:31Shearer.
01:36Seized upon by Cabrera.
01:37First touch of the ball for the unmistakable Carlos Valderrama.
01:50Lozano.
01:51De Avala.
01:55Serna back to Valderrama, who will try to set the tempo of the Colombian performance.
02:01A huge Rinko run off the ball by Ence.
02:04And fairly in the opinion of the referee.
02:07Not an opinion that everybody inside the stadium shares, incidentally.
02:10He did catch Rinko's ankle work.
02:17Good passer.
02:19Scholes to Anderson, who has Gary Neville making ground beyond him.
02:24Now Beckham.
02:25Swung in towards Alan Shearer.
02:27Flag has been raised, somewhat belatedly.
02:30They have a good football from England there.
02:32Some nice interplay on the right-hand side.
02:34He just gives a touch outside, but that's a good early ball in from Beckham there.
02:39And he's hit the space that Shearer will want.
02:41The space in front of him where he can run onto it.
02:45Owen is first to the ball.
02:48Chance for Michael Owen to run at Colombia.
02:50To push it a little too close to Bermudez.
02:54Run back well by David Beckham.
02:57Owen again.
02:58Shearer wide on the touchline.
03:00Owen was taken late.
03:02Only skulls in the box for now.
03:04Beckham curled in.
03:05Le Sour has arrived late in the day.
03:07Well, he tried to be deliberate.
03:10He knew what a good chance it was.
03:12And he couldn't quite thread it inside the post.
03:18Yeah, I would think the thing's going through his mind as that ball arrives.
03:21Shall I take a touch?
03:22Shall I hit it first time on the volley?
03:24Or shall I try and just stroke it?
03:25And I think at the end he's finished up with a little bit of it.
03:28He's tried to be sure of it.
03:30And a good day when he's playing at the top of his front.
03:32He may just have last night.
03:35Senna was given a yellow card for that late challenge of Mike Loewen.
03:38Good advantage played by the Mexican referee.
03:41Almost resulted in a goal for him.
03:49Reynos stumbled.
03:50Owen has possession.
03:55Going in towards skulls.
03:56Headed away by Bermudez.
03:57Here's Anderton.
03:58Yes!
04:02It's Darren Anderton for England.
04:08The breakthrough has come after 20 minutes.
04:14A volley struck with real feeling by Darren Anderton.
04:19That is a great finish from Anderton.
04:21He's been much maligned.
04:22He's been a long time out.
04:24That will have meant an awful lot to him.
04:25He's hit it as true as could be.
04:28Beat the keeper on the near post.
04:29But it's the power of the shot.
04:31Let's not forget the good work on the right-hand side by Owen.
04:36And that's a nice first touch.
04:37Cerner who's already just been...
04:38Can't quite make up the ground.
04:40Whack.
04:41It's Darren Anderton's first goal in any football match for over a year.
04:46What a time to score it.
04:55Fouled by Camel on De'Avila.
05:03Well, it's been a long, long road back to the top for Darren Anderton.
05:07One of the stars of Euro 96.
05:11And he can certainly see a bright light at the end of that tunnel now.
05:15But England must concentrate.
05:16One of the stars of Euro 96.
05:17One of the stars of Euro 96.
05:23Valderrama is standing over the free kit.
05:28Which one is he booking there?
05:29Is he booking the two of them?
05:32Scoles on the side.
05:33Both are agonising in the direction of the referee.
05:36Valderrama takes towards Bermudez.
05:38Campbell did just enough.
05:39Neville helps it on its way.
05:44Well, they look at each other.
05:45but Scholes certainly seems to feel as though he's been carded.
05:51Anderton, a space again.
05:57Beckham.
05:59Looking to play, Anderton in behind Moreno, once more.
06:02Ooh, just a little dead on the bounce, but Scholes is there.
06:06Might come here for Michael Owen!
06:10England are making chances.
06:13Very important. That's, once again, some good blink of play there between Beckham and Anderton.
06:18Defender just gets a touch on before Scholes. There's the young man.
06:22Flick! Bang!
06:25He can't believe he doesn't gone in. Everything else he's hit this season seems to have gone in.
06:33Switching the point of the direction of the attack and encouraging Masao to come forward down the left-hand side
06:37this time,
06:38but always the shadow of Rinkong there.
06:43Scholes to Ince.
06:44Just opened up for him momentarily. He was run off the ball in the end by Plessiado.
06:49Unfairly good position this for England. David Beckham will fancy a piece of this.
06:52Fancy.
06:56Forwards challenge on Paul Ince, who'd just stolen half a yard on Plessiado.
07:10It hasn't been a World Cup Finals crown full of brilliant free-kicks as yet.
07:15Step forward, David Beckham.
07:27Beckham strikes.
07:29Oh, save!
07:32Oh, there's one for the picture book.
07:36David Beckham, brilliant.
07:39Brilliant, brilliant free-kick.
07:41Unstoppable.
07:43His first goal for England, what a vital goal, what a smashing execution.
07:48And who said Anderton and Beckham cannot play together?
07:53He was desperately unlucky with one against Romainer in the first game.
07:56No such thing there, a brilliant execution.
08:01David Beckham's 17th match for England, his first goal for England is one that he will remember.
08:07When he and Victoria are sitting around with their grandchildren in many, many years' time.
08:12That was a cracker.
08:22Paul Ince.
08:28Paul's goals back to Gary Neville.
08:32And what a fantastic cushion.
08:34Two goals in the opening half hour.
08:37Both splendidly struck, first by Darren Anderton and then by David Beckham.
08:42England lead by two goals to nil.
08:46And the second round beckons the young men of England.
08:51De Avala.
08:54Valderrama.
08:56Preciado.
08:58Valderrama again.
08:59Into which De Avala.
09:01Adams has made some good interceptions for England tonight.
09:06Senna.
09:11Valderrama has played Preciado in here.
09:14There was an element of surprise about the shot, but the angle was all against him.
09:20Pretty straightforward stop for David Seaman.
09:22Valderrama.
09:30Good shot and the turn after following the smashing ball by Valderrama.
09:36Now Graeme Le Son
09:44Adams looking long
09:46So far, so good
09:48Two very, very good goals
09:51A dynamic hit from Darren Anderton
09:54Followed by a dream of a free kick from David Beckham
09:58His first goal for England
10:00They lead by two goals to nil at half-time
10:05And Colombia have had no answer to the sheer class and craft
10:09Of England's young internationals
10:16England have cleared the first round obstacle
10:20At each and every World Cup Finals that they have reached since 1958
10:23They have never won a match at the World Cup Finals by more than three clear goals
10:31Here is Moreno
10:35Barbarama
10:36All three of the new faces in the Colombian line-up for the second half are forwards
10:42Here is one of them, Aristizabal
10:46Certainly something for Glen Hogg to ponder
10:49With the new names on the Colombian team sheet for this second period
11:00What it doesn't do, Clive, it doesn't affect the pattern of them
11:03Whether their performance has improved, the pattern will still be the same
11:08Far by Ince
11:20David Seaman
11:21Perusing the new threat
11:24Aristizabal, one of the substitutes, will take the free kick
11:29Ricard, number 20, and Valencia, number 9, are both very big men
11:34Aristizabal finds in a very disappointing free kick which Beckham clears
11:37They can give him some lessons maybe
11:42Barbarama heading it forward, Adams bravely away
11:45Skulls first to the ball
11:47Brainless so
11:47Space here for Michael Owen
11:49Usually spells danger for the opposition
11:51Owen has men arriving to his right if they can catch up with him
11:55It's Skulls!
11:56Oh, it's a blinding shot by Paul Skulls
11:58And it needed a useful save from Farid Mondragon
12:03He started the second half as he started the first
12:06The keeper's a little bit spectacular, a little bit extravagant
12:10But that's a good build-up again
12:11Skulls operating down the left hand
12:14Makes the run, sets it up
12:16It's ended by Anderson
12:17Is Shear arriving and Mondragon just matches to get his body behind that one
12:22England have picked up where they left off
12:49He knocked one down to Mondragon's, more or less Mondragon's feet
12:54Anderton
12:58Anderton
12:59Beckham's played him back in, behind Moreno
13:01Good work between Beckham and Anderton again
13:03Swung in, Skulls!
13:07The bubbling
13:08It's almost like watching a carbon copy of the first half though, isn't it?
13:11Some great interplay on the right-hand side between Anderton and Beckham
13:15Ball slightly behind him, but that time he makes a good connection
13:18And he'll probably think he scored then, Skulls
13:22Ben thought he had
13:26Columbia trying to quicken their temper, Iris Disabal is a busy player
13:30He's keeping a catch-ins in the face there
13:31Referee was close, saw nothing on toward him
13:34Beckham has got Shearer in behind Bermudez
13:36It's Alan Shearer, it's still Alan Shearer
13:40Forced the save from Mondragon, he did have Michael Owen in support
13:44But Alan Shearer had eyes for only one place in the back of the net
13:49But it was that man Beckham again that made the game, wasn't it?
13:51Left foot he passed that time, and Shearer will love that sort of service
13:58I think if they'd have been 2-0 up he might have looked for his support striker
14:04But Shearer needs a goal as well
14:11And in reserve still for England
14:14Harris Disabal
14:18Barbarama
14:20Adams has seen everything early tonight
14:25By his own admission he hasn't been quite on top of his game in these finals so far
14:29Tony Adams, I think he'll be a lot happier with himself tonight
14:32Campbell joining in
14:34Oh, what an athletic run by Saul Campbell
14:36He's gone away from Bermudez
14:38Oh, eventually Palacios got to him
14:40It's Michael Owen though for England
14:43What a run by Saul Campbell
14:46I think that I was halfway thinking that might be the goal of the tournament
14:50He searched, he was powerful, he just got thwarted at the end
14:53And even then he still fell for Michael Owen
14:56But here's Valencia
14:58Campbell getting back into his proper station to hook the ball clear
15:02What an exhilarating burst that was though by the big man from White Hart Lane
15:07Beckham cutting the ball out
15:09England well on top
15:18Anderton, forward towards Zoe
15:21Not quite bounce for him
15:24Maybe two defenders to snip him out
15:43Valencia
15:43Valencia
15:45Cabrera
15:47Someone away from Lusso
15:50Played square to Valencia, trying to lay it off to Aris Disabelle
15:58In four to Shearer, what a good ball, he's all alone for now Alan Shearer
16:02Pass one
16:03Now he lays it off
16:04Anderton
16:13Regrouping
16:15Owen
16:19Again that lightning burst of speed from Michael Owen that's ran into Lozano
16:27Adams there again
16:31Almost as if you've been given a script to the game ahead of the game, Tony Adams' reading has been
16:36such
16:36But here is Saul Campbell
16:39Running like an Olympic athlete
16:41Hurdling the challenges
16:42Starting to look ahead, starting to wonder, is this the moment of my career?
16:47One more defender to get past
16:49Needs a bit of help out there
16:54ılma no
17:00Isla Fremcabrera
17:02Picked off by Shearer
17:03Michael Owen
17:04Running at Columbia
17:05Running at Columbia
17:06Running at Columbia
17:07Go!
17:08Just pushed it a little too far ahead of him
17:11It was danger though, that's what you like, he sees nothing else but the goal, he goes for it, he's
17:17engaging people all the while, the keeper's coming.
17:22Good defending.
17:23Yeah, good defending.
17:25You'd maybe like to see Darren Anderson with a little bit more guile when he gets people.
17:31Neville's throw, spacer McManaman.
17:36Anderson, it opened up for Darren Anderson.
17:43For tonight, his last goal in any kind of football was at Anfield for Tottenham, May last year.
17:51It was a long, long streak, mainly an injured streak which he broke so spectacularly in the first half as
17:58this man Beckham added to.
18:01Now can Boendo or somebody else get amongst the goals in these closing moments?
18:06McManaman maybe, who's never scored for England.
18:09Closing out to Rinko.
18:14If they're going to make the progress that everybody hopes England are going to make, I think it's going to
18:18be done with zestful football.
18:20I think if we play slow tempo, slow, I think we're playing to the hands of sides that are better
18:25at it than us.
18:26I think one of the things, looking at Glenn Huddle's squad, one thing he does seem to have is an
18:30injection of pace and youth in there.
18:33I think they've got to play a major part for me.
18:37Ricard trying to play a major part for Colombia.
18:40Cross was deflected by Rousseau, but Seaman downed it in.
18:44He's played slightly behind McManaman.
18:50Funnily enough, Alan Shearer is the one that's, because England play at a quick tempo,
18:55he seems to be the one that's a little bit out of sorts with it all.
18:59Ricard now.
19:01Oh, it's a spectacular effort by Hamilton Ricard of Middlesbrough.
19:06He's just fading away from David Seaman's right-hand post.
19:10The keeper have it covered, I think he probably did.
19:17Beckham caught back, though.
19:19Leader hits.
19:21Shearer. Owen is making a run beyond him.
19:23And Michael Owen is onside here, it's Owen for England.
19:27Well, strangely for him, he didn't quite have the craft to trick a goalkeeper who made a useful save.
19:32Beckham.
19:34Came off the head of Palacios.
19:37The manaman trying to make something of it.
19:42Lesotho, it's...
19:45Beckham.
19:48Glee.
19:55Owen.
19:55Owen.
19:56Beckham.
19:56Owen's got another opportunity here.
19:58Instead, it's Paul Ince!
20:02First chance for Owen was the better one, that's for sure.
20:04It's Ince's last contribution back, he's coming off.
20:07Yeah, I mean, that's good play from Shearer, he spotted him in.
20:10Keeper's done very well, he's hit it fairly true.
20:13I bet he's had a bit too much time to think there as he's running onto it.
20:17His first walk of the ball, well, no, his first walk of the ball.
20:20But I bet he thought he was going to get his first goal tonight.
20:25Understandable switch in the England midfield.
20:27David Batty left out of the starting line-up tonight.
20:31In the line, with him!
20:34McManaman, tricked away past Rincon.
20:38He'll try and play back to Lesotho, might still get to him, it's McManaman, it's Lesotho.
20:45Towards Shearer, nudged away as far as David Beckham.
20:49Went to Chitner, goalkeeper!
20:51Oh, it was a couple of feet too high.
20:54Paul Lynch watching on another audacious effort by David Beckham.
21:00I'll tell you what...
21:05All the studs, thank you very much, right by right knee.
21:09I'll tell you what, that is his better tackle or chance than he's in the tournament.
21:14McManaman, in towards Shearer, on the volley!
21:18Mondragon got two hands to it, and only just kept it out.
21:27Good control, can't quite get enough dip on it, although the keeper, Mondragon,
21:31well, he was desperate for a goal.
21:33He'd also got McManaman powering up alongside him,
21:36if he wanted to lay out a square ball off.
21:43England had two 3-0 wins in Mexico in eight and six.
21:47Oh, Alan Shearer.
21:49In fact, he's going to be yellow card if he's taking the free kick too quickly
21:53in his attempt to get England another 3-0 win.
21:56Can you believe that?
22:01They beat Paraguay in Mexico City 3-0, and Poland in Malta are 3-0.
22:05The best victories that an England side has ever recorded at the World Cup Finals.
22:10Shearer, I think, could have brought a smile about that yellow card,
22:13he'll be scrubbed off if he gets to the end of this match without another one.
22:19Tell you what, the guys really try to handball it there.
22:25Dermude has just resumed, has had his yellow card, the fouling, oh, it confirmed.
22:30Now can England finish it off with a third?
22:34Will it be Shearer, or will it be Beckham?
22:39It's Shearer!
22:41Oh, kept out by Mondragon, Adams!
22:43How did that stay out?
22:46He caught that, Tony Adams.
22:49Echoes of that fantastic goal he scored against Edmonton in the title clincher for Arsenal.
22:55England are going to watch out at the other end with Ricard coming forward.
23:01Batty away as far as Lee.
23:04David Beckham's free kick has not quite been eclipsed.
23:11Well, that's a great free kick, that's a good save from the keeper.
23:15The next thing, Tony Adams, is incredible!
23:22Fantastic vocal support for England inside the stadium in Lawrence tonight.
23:27Beckham has found McManaman, has found Owen.
23:31And now Beckham.
23:37And his big moment of the night came with a free kick,
23:40which doubled England's money after half an hour.
23:44But it has been another big night for David Beckham, that's for sure.
23:48England take their place amongst the chosen few.
23:52Through to the last 16, as expected, as demanded.
23:57The first part of their mission has been accomplished,
24:00and accomplished in the end with a little bit of style,
24:03through two terrific goals from Darren Anderson and from David Beckham.
24:10Hasn't got quite according to the master plan, defeat against Romania wasn't terminal,
24:15but it does mean that England must dip their foot in at the deep end of this World Cup,
24:18a little earlier than planned, but before a royal audience they will go on to face Argentina.
24:24World Cup memories of Rattan and Maradona.
24:27It's Argentina in San Etienne in the second round.
24:30You're going to come up against the best sooner or later for England.
24:33It's next Tuesday night.
24:36Great performance from the boys.
24:37We really did work hard defensively, and looked really solid,
24:41and we passed the ball magnificently.
24:43And the amount of chances we created, you know, if we'd have taken half our chances,
24:47I think we'd have won by four or five.
24:49Much better tonight. I think it was even better than the Tunisia game.
24:52We played some tremendous football, we created chances, and we gave them problems all night.
24:56I don't really think there was an England player that didn't get anything but an 8 out of 10,
25:01and when your team performed like that, you should win the game.
25:05People have wanted David Beckham in, the manager's waited his time,
25:09decided to put him in when it suited him and no-one else.
25:14And he's come in tonight and he's done an excellent job,
25:16not only him but Darren Anthony as well.
25:18If half people had their way in England, Darren Anthony wouldn't have been playing,
25:21but it just goes to show the coach knows best.
25:23My first start, I wanted to get going straight away, you know,
25:27and the early goal from Darren Anderson sort of settled us down.
25:30And then, you know, I got my chance and I put it away.
25:32It's been very difficult for me, and I've worked really hard to get back
25:37and get in contention just, you know, to be involved in the World Cup.
25:41And it would be nice if people, you know, look at that and think,
25:44well, hasn't he done well to, you know, come back from the injuries.
25:47Everybody expects you to score every time you play now.
25:49Yeah, it's a hard thing to keep up with everyone's expectations,
25:53but you do your best as long as the team won as they did today.
25:56It doesn't matter who's scored.
25:57Was there something about tonight, Alan, that says, look,
26:00England can do really well in this competition?
26:03Well, there's been something about the last three games,
26:05but that's the way things are in our country because we lose a game in the last minute
26:09and it's all doom and gloom and the pressure's back on
26:11and they tend to keep pressure on everyone for some unknown reason.
26:14But if they just stick with us, we always said that we'd give our best
26:17and if our best is good enough, great. If it isn't, then no one can ask any more.
26:20We're delighted that we're playing Argentina and, you know, I was personally out there in 86.
26:25It would be nice to turn that round.
26:27We always wanted to give the fans something to shout about
26:29and they've turned up again in the thousands tonight
26:31and God knows where they get the tickets from, but they managed to get all of them.
26:34Let's hope they keep on supporting us like they have done in the previous three games
26:37and hopefully we can keep them in the competition.
26:40A holiday or a ride-bill today is the with toad DW &35.
