Argentina won their group, winning all three matches. England were runners up in their group after their defeat to Romania.
Transcript
00:01It's a pity the timing has gone a bit wrong here, because once they get out there, once they get
00:05into the position, they want to get on their way, and they are now, let's see.
00:10Cameras flash around this ground here in Saint-Étienne.
00:14Lopez quickly on the ball, and VerĂ³n back to Chamot.
00:20And Lopez, who's quick down that flank, but it'll be a goal kick to England.
00:32Now Glenn Hoddle, the feeling is that he's just bringing his side to the right sort of climax, his timing
00:41has been perfect, bringing them to the peak of condition at the right time, with a lot of confidence in
00:49their ability.
00:50Chamot getting it away again, once more up towards Lopez, Ortega, and he got the ball passed in.
01:00As well, Lopez trying to play it again towards Battistuta, but he just got a little tangled up there for
01:05a moment, Sol Campbell, but it was a lovely quick recovery, and here's Graham Lassau.
01:11Ortega again, quickly challenged by Scholes, and fairly so, Ortega went down, the referee could not have been in a
01:18better position to see it, and decided that the game should go on.
01:24A long ball played forward again, Sol Campbell with a header, and a valuable one again for England.
01:29Finding Gary Neville, banging it down that line, up towards Michael Owen.
01:36Anderton will pick this up, out to Owen on the far side.
01:38Shearer's made a little dart down towards that flank, but he was supremely well followed there by Nelson Vivas.
01:49Beckham to Scholes, to Anderton, Anderton claims he got a smack in the face there, but the referee again saw
01:56nothing untoward, and the linesman couldn't have been closer.
02:00Beckham cutting out VerĂ³n's pass, a throw to England.
02:03Well, the linesman may have been too close, Brian, I mean, he could have almost done the deed himself if
02:08he was that close.
02:11Adams quickly in, but he sliced that one straight to Battistuta, Battistuta in turn, has put the ball now through
02:17to Owen, and Owen challenged and beaten on the edge of the box there.
02:20And on the far side, Shearer almost coming in, and Lassau's shot across the face of the goal, and Alan
02:28Shearer, there's the challenge on Owen.
02:30And the ball falling obligingly to Graham Lassau, driven across the face of the goal, and look how close Shearer
02:37was.
02:38Vivas, putting it forward again towards Battistuta.
02:43Ortega lurking on this wing now, and played in again, and, well, Seaman's just well, he didn't get there, he's
02:51given a penalty.
02:53He's given a penalty to Argentina, and a yellow card to David Seaman, the worst possible start.
03:01It looked as though Seaman would get to that one, and it looks bemused himself.
03:07Well, he's chased it across, Brian, I don't think there's been a lot of contact, but he's just cleverly left
03:11his foot there.
03:12He's gone down, and from the angle the referee was, it probably looked like a penalty.
03:18Simeone, the man he brought down, and what do you think, looking at that?
03:22Well, it's one of those, Brian, where you say, well, it's harsh, but I think David Seaman tried to stop
03:29his momentum going forward,
03:30because he realised he wasn't going to get the ball, but unfortunately he's sliding along, and there was contact there.
03:35Shearer's just had a word with Seaman, and, well, David Seaman has saved one or two very important penalties in
03:46his life,
03:47and in his England career, but now he's facing Battistuta.
03:52And he almost got to that, but it's 1-0 Argentina.
03:58And Battistuta rocking, rocking, rocking, he said he wanted one for his new baby son, and he's got it.
04:10Well, that couldn't have been a worse start for England, with just over five minutes gone.
04:16And just look how close David Seaman got.
04:23And Almatha celebrating at the other end of the field, now a really big job for England to do here.
04:30Hints.
04:31A really debatable penalty there, conceded by David Seaman on Simeone.
04:38In comes Beckham.
04:40In goes Anderton.
04:41Beckham again.
04:42That might just fire up England all the more, but it's Argentina in possession again, playing nicely here in little
04:49groups,
04:49and Ortega already seems to be, not exactly running the show, but he's having plenty to say for himself, and
04:55here he is on the ball now.
04:56Tried to play it in again towards Battistuta, but it was Ince who stopped him that time.
05:01This time it's Almatha.
05:03Now Simeone.
05:05Hit to Vivas.
05:07Challenged by Shearer.
05:08VerĂ³n gets there first.
05:10Playing with comfort at the moment, Argentina.
05:13The comfort that you get from a goal this early in, such a vital World Cup game.
05:18Ortega.
05:19They're on.
05:20England can't get a sniff of the ball at the moment.
05:23Ortega.
05:24Hounded there by Ince, but still Ortega.
05:27And still Ortega, but no foul there by Lusso.
05:35Ince to Campbell.
05:37A long way to go yet.
05:39Remember, don't panic, Paul Ince said.
05:41Stay positive and optimistic.
05:44Well, here's Vivas.
05:46And they're making all the running at the moment.
05:48Ortega and Lusso coming in quickly.
05:50Looked back at Seaman and decided that safety was the better thing.
05:54Well, I think Lerner will be saying, hey, lads, just keep calm.
05:57Paul Ince said it before the game.
05:58They do not want to concede another goal.
06:02Off to Ortega again.
06:04Challenged again, this time beaten by Lusso.
06:06Got the bounce of the ball as well.
06:08Scholes playing it on.
06:10Owen, a chance to run at them now.
06:12Michael Owen with a chance to run at them.
06:14And that sure is another penalty!
06:19And England gets a chance to get level now.
06:22Thanks to the drive and the running of Michael Owen.
06:27Well, this is why he's in the team, Brian.
06:28And it's just as much a penalty as the other one.
06:31They're two decisions.
06:32Look, he comes across.
06:33He tries to get out of the way, which is what David Seaman tried to do.
06:36And the referees balanced it up for me.
06:38And Paul Ince gets a yellow card there.
06:42I think Paul Ince ran 40 or 50 yards to remonstrate with the Danish referee because he thought the Argentinians
06:48were holding up the possibility of Alan Shearer taking this penalty.
06:51And maybe the words were a little too strong for the Dane.
06:55And Ince gets a yellow card to go with Seaman's.
07:00But here's Shearer with a chance.
07:04Will his nerve hold?
07:07At home do you dare watch?
07:09And how many would swap places with him now?
07:14Shearer with a chance to make it 1-1.
07:16And does it superbly!
07:21Well, you said dare you watch, Brian.
07:23But if there's one man you want to take a penalty for a time like this, in a game like
07:27this, well, I'd want it to be Alan Shearer.
07:32Terrific strike.
07:33There was no chance.
07:35The first goal that Argentina have conceded in this World Cup.
07:38And it's the England captain, Alan Shearer, who's banged it high into the net to make it 1-1.
07:44He goes away with that characteristic arm and the finger up.
07:48Zanetti.
07:50Veron, such a powerful man.
07:52And Lopez almost getting away with it.
07:54Ince spotted that danger in a flash and finds Beckham.
07:58Beckham now to Owen.
07:59And here's another Owen run.
08:01He's going to worry them again.
08:02It's a great run by Michael Owen.
08:04And he might finish it off.
08:05Oh, it's a wonderful goal!
08:08What an amazing moment in Michael Owen's young career.
08:13A fantastic run that frightened the Argentinians.
08:17And a most unerring finish beyond Rahr to make it 2-1 England.
08:22A terrific moment.
08:24Well, you just don't do this at 28 years of age, let alone 18.
08:29He runs at people.
08:31The pace is frightening.
08:32But the finish is unbelievable.
08:37Well, he ran for the penalty.
08:40And he's frightened the life out of them here.
08:44He holds off the number three, Chamot.
08:47He swings past the number two, Ayala.
08:51And then he's faced by Rahr.
08:53And then he finds the corner of the net.
08:55And he's just 18 years old.
08:57He's not 19 till December.
09:02Ortega.
09:03Well, well stopped by Campbell.
09:08Geron, this could be difficult.
09:11But it's not going to be.
09:12It's going to be a goal.
09:14Well, tell me some more about this fella.
09:17Well, I think it's what's going to be written about this guy that's really important.
09:21I mean, an old head on young shoulders doesn't say it all.
09:24But I think his skulls was there and was thinking about taking it off him.
09:28But I think his foot would have ended up in the back of the net.
09:31Place is buzzing here now.
09:39Now, will it be back up?
09:43They get it away.
09:44Only as far as Paul Ince driven.
09:46Back up by him!
09:47And just over, dipping and swaying there.
09:50But just clearing Rowe's crossbar.
09:53Great strike by Ince.
09:57Tremendous strike.
09:58Hoping it would dip just a little bit quicker.
10:00Could have done with being five yards further out.
10:13Kershearer nodded on again.
10:15And Skrulls might get in this time.
10:16Oh, my goodness.
10:17That was a golden opportunity.
10:20And he's sitting there and he's thinking,
10:22how on earth did I miss that?
10:24On a 3-1.
10:25That wouldn't be far from sewing it up.
10:29Well, he'll be disappointed.
10:31The only thing he can say, it's on his left foot.
10:32He would have preferred it on his right.
10:34Great header from Alan Shearer.
10:39I think Daniel Passorello will want to get this half over with
10:42and get talking about what they're going to do at the back.
10:44I mean, England haven't had the bulk of the possession,
10:46but they've had the chances.
10:49Here's Vivas.
10:51Here's Vivas.
10:51Here's Vivas.
10:52Ortega.
10:54Oh, Ortega.
10:55This is a problem.
10:57And Saul Campbell might have...
10:58Well, Saul Campbell half solved it,
11:02but it came back in a difficult angle for Barastuda.
11:06And finished over the net.
11:08Wonderful skill.
11:10They're getting each other's way.
11:11Neville and Saul Campbell a little bit.
11:13Here we are, right on the stroke of half-time.
11:16And this is a highly dangerous situation.
11:20Barastuda's behind it.
11:23Seaman, we hope, will get a good side of it.
11:252-4-5 in the wall from England,
11:28plus one Argentinian.
11:31And it'll be a blast from Matagol, as they call him.
11:36Barastuda.
11:37No, it's not.
11:38It's Ferron who's played it.
11:39For Zanetti, it's a great goal.
11:41It's 2-2.
11:45What a superb free kick.
11:51And Zanetti makes it 2-2.
11:54Well, David Seaman had absolutely no chance.
11:57We've been complaining about the free kicks
11:59we've been seeing in this World Cup.
12:01What we probably didn't want to do
12:02was see the very best free kick we've seen so far
12:05against England.
12:07Terrific little ball.
12:08Great touch, great finish.
12:11Seaman, absolutely no chance.
12:13And it's back level at 2-2.
12:15A touch from Baran.
12:17Suddenly, Zanetti's there.
12:19Onto the left foot before England can really react.
12:22And Seaman without a chance
12:24as the ball flies past him.
12:31The half-time whistle.
12:33A blow for England
12:35in spite of a brilliant first half from Michael Owen.
12:39Shearer from the penalty spot
12:40after Barastuda put Argentina ahead
12:42from the penalty spot.
12:43Then Michael Owen with a terrific goal.
12:46And then Zanetti on the stroke of half-time.
12:482-2 here at Saint-Etienne.
12:50Well, they do lack a bit of pace
12:52and they've kept eight clean sheets
12:54and I don't know how
12:55having seen what Michael Owen and Shearer
12:57and Anderton have done to them in the first half.
12:59Well, hold on to your hats.
13:01We're away again now.
13:04Ball is played by Neville.
13:10Pazarella.
13:11I just wonder what his role...
13:12Of course, his half-time talk would have been made
13:14an awful lot easier
13:15with that Zanetti goal
13:16right on the stroke of half-time.
13:18Well, he jumped up when they scored the goal
13:20and couldn't...
13:20That's the sort of thing
13:21they'll have been working out on the training ground
13:23and he'll feel
13:23he had a real part in that.
13:25Maybe he's almost felt like he struck the ball.
13:27Well, Anderton's pass to Owen
13:31wasn't by what was required
13:34and neither was that challenge on Beckham
13:37and Beckham...
13:38Now, whether Beckham accidentally
13:42smacked into the defender, Simeone,
13:44the midfielder, I don't know.
13:46But Beckham's holding his head.
13:47I think a yellow card is going to be brandished here somewhere
13:49and it might be
13:51to David Beckham.
13:53Now, Shearer's telling Battistuta
13:54not to get involved.
13:56The two captains there.
13:58Well, Brian, it could be a red card.
14:00That's what Alan Shearer's worried about.
14:02What, for Beckham?
14:03Yes, because he retaliated.
14:05It's a yellow card.
14:06Wait a minute, he's taking another card out.
14:08For Beckham, it's a red card
14:09for David Beckham!
14:12Oh, no!
14:17So Beckham
14:19is out of the game.
14:23Right in front of the referee, Brian.
14:25And Simeone gets the yellow card.
14:29That certainly is worth
14:31and bears looking at a game.
14:40That's all it was.
14:42Now, my feeling is
14:43that the referee has
14:45overreacted quite violently there.
14:47Well, he's right on the spot
14:48and he did retaliate.
14:50If you look,
14:51he has a little flick at him.
14:52He waits.
14:53He gets up.
14:54He's apologising to him
14:55and then he kicks in, Brian.
14:56Oh, yeah, beg your pardon.
14:57I think he's got to go
14:58and the referee's four yards away.
15:01From that angle, it's quite clear.
15:05A real tough time for a manager now.
15:07You've got to reorganise.
15:09How do we go at the back?
15:10The impetuous moment.
15:11It's costing than dear.
15:14So Shearer might have another go.
15:16As you're saying,
15:17all the players are complaining
15:18that these World Cup balls
15:19are little on the light side.
15:20Roberto Carlos, the great Brazilian,
15:22said,
15:22it's ruined a part of my game.
15:25Although David Beckham managed
15:26very nicely with his free kick.
15:29But Beckham's not here now.
15:31It's Shearer.
15:34And he drove it well.
15:36And it was an excellent piece of goalkeeping
15:38there by Carlos Ruhr.
15:40That was a great free kick
15:42and a good save.
15:43And a corner for England.
15:49Alan this time electing to not put so much power in it.
15:52Yeah, that time by Roberto Ayala.
15:58Ortega, a bit of space ahead of him.
15:59And look how well he uses it.
16:01He's flicking the ball through.
16:03And it's just gone wide from Lopez.
16:07He's just got a touch on it, Seaman.
16:11It's a great save, Brian.
16:12This gets deflected.
16:14Oh, yes.
16:15And David Seaman gets a finger to it.
16:20So, a corner for Argentina.
16:24Very, very hard to break down.
16:30And now Owen with a chance to run at them.
16:33Still Michael Owen.
16:34Still Michael Owen.
16:35Oh!
16:50This was another great break by Owen.
16:52You wanted it to be in.
16:55He ran at them.
16:56He got past them pretty easy.
16:57He was forced out wide this time.
17:01Hannerton and Shearer standing over it.
17:03Ince is just off it.
17:04Adams actually and Campbell
17:06are on the far side of the box
17:07if they play one that way.
17:09And Shearer's played in.
17:10It's come off the wall.
17:11It's gone for the corner.
17:17Well, a well-worked free kick.
17:19And it hits Verran on the shoulder.
17:20It could have gone anywhere.
17:22Unfortunately for the Argentinians
17:23and unfortunately for the English.
17:25Goes wide at the far post for the corner.
17:28Oh, on a good delivery again.
17:30Sol Campbell stayed there.
17:32Tony Adams has stayed there.
17:33Shearer's in there.
17:34Owen's in the six-yard area.
17:36On the edge of the box are Merson and Ince.
17:42Noted in the long way towards Tony Adams.
17:46Shearer.
17:47Oh, Campbell.
17:49It's Campbell who's finally got the touch.
17:51He's disallowed it, Brian.
17:52He's disallowed it.
17:52He's disallowed it and they've played on
17:54very quickly for a push.
17:56Well, and look at Verran.
17:58While England were celebrating
17:59and they were off the field.
18:01Suddenly Ortega can get it through
18:04and Crespo, but the flag is up there.
18:07Well, there was total confusion at the other end.
18:09The ball went into the net.
18:11Campbell came away as though he'd scored it.
18:13Adams came away as though he'd got a touch.
18:15And Adams now inquiring of the Danish referee
18:17why it was disallowed.
18:19Well, Shearer jumped up with the keeper.
18:21I think Campbell in the end, on the face,
18:23not on the hand,
18:24and he went in the net.
18:25I couldn't see anything wrong with it.
18:29Well, let's have a look again at that.
18:30I mean, that's...
18:33The possibility was that Alan Shearer
18:35fouled the keeper.
18:37Well, they're all up together.
18:40Oh, there may have been an elbow by Shearer
18:42on the keeper.
18:43Yeah, that's what it is, Brian.
18:45Well spotted.
18:46Little elbow, but...
18:51The Argentinian thinks it's his,
18:53but the referee is clearly signalled
18:55and England's fire and Saul Campbell will take it.
19:01My goodness.
19:02What drama there's been in this match tonight.
19:04And there's still...
19:05Unless something pretty dramatic happens,
19:08Barastuta and the rest of us
19:09will be watching 30 minutes of extra time.
19:14Adams playing it forward to Shearer.
19:18Foul given against Alan Shearer.
19:25Almatha.
19:28To Beron.
19:31To Ortega.
19:33Galeado's lurking.
19:36England plenty back.
19:39It's Galeado.
19:41Playing for Chamot.
19:44Chipped in again there.
19:46Too high for Crespo.
19:48And...
19:50Merson lets it go across for the goal kick.
19:55So...
19:55There's the prospect of extra time.
19:57And of course, as you know,
19:59in extra time,
20:00the golden goal rule works.
20:01If you're not quite aware of that.
20:04It's the first goal scored in extra time.
20:07Wins it.
20:11So that'll be fairly dramatic.
20:14And if...
20:1630 minutes goes by,
20:17and it still remains at 2-2,
20:22then we shall have a penalty shootout.
20:24So it's been dramatic enough tonight.
20:26And my goodness,
20:27you get the feeling there's a lot more still to come.
20:29Well, there goes the whistle for the end of 90 minutes.
20:33And that drama is still to come here in Saint-Étienne.
20:37After the full-time 90 minutes,
20:39Argentine 2,
20:40England 2.
20:45I noticed during that break,
20:47Darren Anderson had a terrific,
20:49quite a long massage.
20:50He's had some problems
20:52with his thighs and lower back.
20:58So how do you see it going now, Kevin?
21:00Well, I think more of the same from England.
21:02They've just got to work together,
21:05try and get a goal,
21:06but don't do anything silly at the back.
21:10Shearer setting a good example,
21:12getting stuck in straightaway there.
21:13Adams almost losing it,
21:15then his control returned,
21:16and he found, well,
21:18there was a clear obstruction there
21:21on Michael Owen by Vivas.
21:26They're on.
21:27Blue shirts dotted around that England penalty area now,
21:30as David Seaman goes down to take that.
21:32Long-ring shot from the big midfielder.
21:35I think we'll be quite happy to let him shoot from,
21:37what, 35 yards against David Seaman.
21:40He's had a few pops tonight.
21:41This is probably one of his bed refs, to be fair.
21:43But that's food and drink for this man.
21:45Does bend a little bit.
21:50Merson.
21:52Southgate.
21:54Ince.
21:58Still going on, but he's so heavily outnumbered.
22:01But Paulins has gone on.
22:03How can he finish it off?
22:04Oh.
22:06It was just that moment when I thought
22:09it was going to rifle into the back of the net.
22:11Maybe you at home did as well.
22:13It's not all skill.
22:14It's an endeavour as well.
22:16And actually, it's only just wide, isn't it?
22:20Here he is.
22:22No, and he's hit it straight at Galeado.
22:25And now Bertie.
22:26And now Galeado again.
22:27And Crespo's through.
22:28And the flag has gone up.
22:29The flag has gone up.
22:35I'm not sure whether the referee has spotted it.
22:40But it's a free kick to England.
22:43Very, very tight.
22:45I didn't think it was offside.
22:48True spirit of English football's been shown here.
22:51But here's Galeado.
22:53Oh, and he's dangerous.
22:54What a good challenge again.
22:55Tony Adams.
22:56Has there been anybody better on the field
22:58than Adams tonight?
22:59Campbell as well.
23:00Well, of course.
23:02Well, you name them all.
23:03They've all been superb.
23:05And that's the end of the first 15 minutes.
23:08And David Seaman waving to the England fans
23:10saying, come on, give us a bit more encouragement.
23:12Because we can still do it.
23:20Here's Veron.
23:2215 minutes
23:24is the most that can be played now.
23:32Here's Veron.
23:34Here's Veron.
23:36Galeado way over the top.
23:39I agree about that.
23:41It's...
23:41As I say, the passions are running really high here.
23:45Veron playing it in.
23:47Oh, a nice turn by Galeado.
23:49Galeado.
23:50Oh, this is...
23:51No, no free kick.
23:54The tackle was a good one.
23:55Galeado went down.
23:57It's Adams again, isn't it, Brian?
23:59It's Adams again with an...
24:01Oh, no.
24:01It's Merson.
24:03Brilliant.
24:04He's been practising those at Middlesbrough with Brian Robson.
24:07Here's Veron.
24:09Long range shot.
24:10Straight at David Seaman.
24:19Shearer's there already.
24:21Needs a good delivery.
24:23Maybe we shan't need the penalties.
24:28Owens in there too.
24:29It's Merson's kick.
24:31And it's...
24:32Oh, just wide.
24:33He got his head to it superbly, did Tony Adams.
24:37He's got to get back now, Brian.
24:46There's the Adams header.
24:48But sadly, for England, just wide.
24:54Shearer.
24:55Flag is up.
24:57For a handball by Shearer, according to the linesman.
25:01And the free kick's taken.
25:02Nothing like the right position.
25:04But in any case, it's over.
25:05Except for the penalty shootout.
25:09Argentina take the first one.
25:14That's 30.
25:17And he scores.
25:181-0.
25:21Yeah, good penalty.
25:23No chance for David Seaman.
25:24Actually, it's a side net in.
25:25Terrific penalty.
25:28Puts a little bit of pressure on Alan Shearer, who comes forward for England.
25:32Well, you can look at the relief on the face of a man.
25:40Can you imagine what's going through the minds, not only of Alan Shearer, but of also all those others who
25:47know that sooner or later they're going to be involved in this penalty shootout.
25:50But Shearer, who's scored once from the spot, and has scored again from the spot, so 1-1.
25:58You talk about pressure on Alan Shearer.
26:00You've just got to group them together, because we expect so much of him, and he delivers.
26:06Because Crespo is the next one coming forward, I think, for Argentina.
26:18So, what's going through his mind?
26:27Can Seaman stop it?
26:29He can!
26:38A terrific save, this from David Seaman.
26:41It's just at the right height, he goes the same way again, and he pours it away.
26:47Well, Ian Wright was saying he's got a system, but the system at the moment is working.
26:54Now, does Paul Ince's system also work?
26:57That's the next key question.
26:59As Paul comes forward to face Carlos Roa.
27:04Glenn Holland, nothing he can do now.
27:06It's out of his hands.
27:09England can go a goal up here in the penalty shootout.
27:12Out of Paul Ince, look at the concentration on Paul Ince's face.
27:20And he save it!
27:26So it stays at 1-1.
27:28Well, almost a carbon copy of the other penalty, same height, same corner.
27:33Same standard of goalkeeping.
27:39Strong arms, calm it away.
27:43And the strong man, Varon, comes forward now.
27:47Juan Varon.
27:5023 years old.
27:53With a job of huge importance.
27:56Can Seaman do it again?
27:58No, that was a great, great penalty.
28:11Forward for England next is Paul Nerson.
28:16Awaiting Argentinians.
28:17Delighted, and so are their fans.
28:25So, Paul Nerson for England.
28:29No, the referee wasn't happy with where the goalkeeper was placed.
28:33He was standing off the line.
28:35And now he's complaining to the referee that Nerson has moved the ball off the spot.
28:39And the referee's given the keeper a yellow card.
28:43That doesn't help, though, Brian, does it?
28:45The yellow card doesn't mean anything.
28:47But it's delaying Paul Nerson, and that's tactics.
28:50This is real pressure on Nerson now.
28:53This is real pressure on him.
28:57Need this one to go in.
28:59He's turned quickly.
29:01And he's scored with it superbly.
29:03Keeper got a hand to it, but it wasn't enough.
29:06So we stay at level, but it's 2-2.
29:09Tremendous from Paul Nerson this, because he delayed it, the goalkeeper.
29:15But still he has the...
29:16Three penalties taken.
29:21And little Gallardo comes up next.
29:26Only 22 years old.
29:31Now.
29:34Will the baby-faced one have enough to beat David Seaman?
29:38He has.
29:40Oh, lovely penalty.
29:44What do you want to say?
29:45Another baby-faced one coming up now to take the penalty for England, Brian.
29:49Michael Owen.
29:50The two youngest players following each other.
29:54So 3-2, Argentina lead.
29:59Michael Owen with this one.
30:05This is a vital kick.
30:07This is a really vital kick for the 18-year-old.
30:11Wow!
30:13Did you ever doubt it?
30:14Did you ever doubt it?
30:18Well, look at that.
30:23Wonderful spot kick.
30:25It's the post and goes in.
30:26He couldn't have put it any more in the corner.
30:28So we're at 3-3 now.
30:30Four penalties have been taken.
30:32It has to be five.
30:34Now.
30:37If Argentina were to miss one now, Ayala, and England could score their last one.
30:43Now.
30:43It's down to David Seaman now.
30:46Can Seaman make the save of his life here?
30:49What a night of football this is.
30:51Ayala's kick.
30:53Oh, slotted it in superbly.
30:55What it means is that David Batty is coming forward for England.
31:02And he must score.
31:03If he fails to score, if he fails to score, England are out.
31:08Batty, who has never scored for England.
31:12Good penalty on the pressure.
31:13The pressure just keeps building, Brian, doesn't it?
31:1634 caps.
31:17He's not scored.
31:18Now, you know him better than anybody, probably.
31:20Do you back him to score quickly, yes or no?
31:22Yes.
31:27Argentina go through, and England go out.
31:37David Batty, well, it's a tough thing for anybody to have done.
31:43The England players go to him, and, well, the Argentinians know that they've, well, in a
31:52way, been to hell and back, because they should have won.
31:54England, with ten men, right through 74, 75 minutes.
32:01And England, who battled and battled and battled so manfully, in the end, are beaten on a
32:07penalty shootout.
32:09Kevin?
32:12Devastated day for David Batty, because there's always someone got to miss a penalty or something
32:16like this.
32:17But for the England team, nothing much has gone right from tonight, they conceded an early
32:21goal, they conceded a goal just before half-time.
32:24They then got a man sent off.
32:26They've fought through 70-odd minutes to get to penalties, and then they've gone out, and
32:33I'm devastated for them.
32:35Has there ever been a more glorious exit from a World Cup competition than England tonight?
32:39No, there's never a glorious exit as a professional footballer, but we've got to be so proud of
32:45them.
32:47I mean, Argentina could well go on and win it.
32:49They're good enough, that's for sure.
32:51But I feel so sorry for all of them.
32:55I mean, Glenn couldn't have asked any more of them, they've absolutely given everything
32:59they've got, and a little bit more.
33:02And it's just not quite been enough, and it's not meant to be.
33:05But there's young players coming through now.
33:07Owen, the tournament's a poorer place without him, that's for sure.
33:14And there's players who won't come back again, Brian.
33:16But look at those two giants there, Tony Adams and Alan Shearer.
33:21What a fantastic defensive performance Adams put up tonight, and Shearer worked and worked
33:28and worked, they all did.
33:29You could not pick out a single player above any others in this England team tonight.
33:36Paul Ince shedding a few tears.
33:39Michael Owen also distressed.
33:42And David Batty, who is a strong man in every sense, will still feel such bitter disappointment
33:50with that last penalty kick.
33:51And you have the guts to stand up and take it, Brian.
33:53That's right.
