00:01Claudia Ranieri's baptism as Chelsea manager came at Old Trafford in September of 2000.
00:07Six titles in eight years and unbeaten over the opening six games of the season,
00:10the Red Devils appeared to be as invincible as ever.
00:13Ranieri, meanwhile, had replaced fellow Italian Gianluca Viali on the back of a slow start to the season.
00:19And the future for United's Dwight York was up in the air as Sir Alex Ferguson again omitted the striker.
00:24Paul Scholes returned to the side and Raymond van der Haal continued in goal with Fabian Barthez injured.
00:31Ranieri made his name at smaller clubs in Italian football before becoming a fans favourite at Valencia.
00:37He also introduced Gianfranco Zola to the first team at Napoli and the pair were reunited again at Chelsea.
00:43Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet were absent so John Harley and Jodie Morris were given a chance to shine in
00:49front of their new manager.
00:52A bright day at the Theatre of Dreams. Match commentary from John Hound.
01:01We're underway and here is Frank Leberth playing the ball across the line to Marcel Desailly.
01:06Many thought that he might be captain today but it's Lusso who gets the vote.
01:14Chances opening up here but to Zola offside. Both he and Hasselbank caught off.
01:21Ooh actually there was a player coming back who may well have been playing them all.
01:29This is Sylvester the Frenchman.
01:33Cut out well by Panucci. Very well indeed. He's made a good start to this match.
01:41Jonsson.
01:42Back from Erwin to Gary Neville.
01:46Enjoying his new role at the moment.
01:48Has played there in the past of course.
01:53Desailly's header went perilously close to Andy Cole.
01:57So Chelsea has settled nicely.
02:00Which will please Claudio Ranieri.
02:02And they're giving a good account of themselves moving forward too.
02:06As Hasselbank does now with Lusso in company.
02:09And Lusso's cross deep.
02:11Flo hooks it back across.
02:13A chance maybe for Hasselbank who smacks it into the net.
02:16Jimmy Floyd.
02:17Hasselbank has done it again against Manchester United.
02:21A fabulous strike and Ranieri has the first goal of his management of Chelsea.
02:29It was a thundering shot from the right boot of the Dutchman.
02:34And Flo did so well to hook that ball back.
02:37Hasselbank didn't waste any time whatsoever.
02:39And smashed the ball.
02:41High past Van der Gaal.
02:43And it's Manchester United 0.
02:45Chelsea 1.
02:46Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank.
02:53Giggs.
02:56Still Ryan Giggs.
02:57Edge of the area.
02:58Deep cross ball in here.
02:59It's a good one too.
03:00There might be an opening for Sheringham.
03:02And it's over the top of his own crossbar from John Harlan.
03:06As Manchester United respond briskly to that Hasselbank strike.
03:18So Beckham is going to hit this one short.
03:23For Irwin.
03:24A measured cross from him.
03:26It'll drop for Scholes.
03:28Fabulous.
03:29Absolutely fabulous strike.
03:32Four Scholes.
03:33Manchester United won.
03:35Chelsea won.
03:36And we've seen two goals of the highest quality here.
03:41A well worked routine.
03:43And certainly a well driven shot from Manchester United's prolific midfield men.
03:50And so often Paul Scholes is the one who comes up with the goods when Manchester United needs someone.
04:09Harley may think of a shot on goal.
04:11Too high.
04:12But.
04:12Not a bad idea.
04:1520 yards out.
04:17John Harley.
04:18And he.
04:18Gets.
04:19Some meat into this.
04:25It's now the way through to Cole.
04:27But the.
04:27Referee insists.
04:28It's a free kick for Manchester United.
04:30Because they derived no advantage.
04:32They might now.
04:33Because Beckham has taken it quickly and found Giggs.
04:38Powered by Flo.
04:42I think the referee will interpret that as awkward rather than malicious.
04:49David Beckham has a nasty gash to his head by the way.
04:52And er.
04:54He's just having treatment on the touch line for it.
04:58There it is.
05:00All the more graphic with the shaven head.
05:10Three kick for Manchester.
05:12And Ryan Giggs sees four red shirts in the penalty area.
05:15Can he find any of them?
05:17No.
05:18There's a foul rush.
05:20Here's Ronnie Johnson coming up at the back post there.
05:23Just leaning on the opponent.
05:25The game's settling a little now after that fiery start.
05:34Cudicini's kick doesn't get over the top of Dennis Irwin who is so vital to Manchester United because he can
05:38play either right or left at the back.
05:40A lovely touch here.
05:41Chance for Keane.
05:42Manchester United.
05:44And Cudicini spreads himself magnificently.
05:47Otherwise Chelsea would have been behind.
05:50A surging run though from the Manchester United captain to get onto that flick from Cole.
05:55And superb goalkeeping and a reactionary stop from Carlo Cudicini.
06:03Sheringham for Scholes.
06:05It's aimed towards Beckham.
06:06And he'll try and get beyond Lasso here.
06:09And er.
06:10What he has done is win the corner.
06:13And Lasso will settle for that.
06:15It's good to see the England left-sided player back in the thick of things after that long absence through
06:21an ankle problem.
06:22Panucci's clearing header this time.
06:24Only to Keane.
06:25Oh.
06:25A poor touch from Keane.
06:27And Hasselbank now might just find himself one-on-one.
06:30Will Neville.
06:30And what a mix-up there.
06:33And it was only at the last second that van der Gaal got his boot to the ball.
06:37Hasselbank didn't sort of quite believe I don't think he had the chance he had.
06:42Manchester United went to sleep there.
06:44And er.
06:45I think Ferguson might have been panicking for a moment.
06:55But Reva van der Gaal and Gary Neville there were totally at odds I think in how to counteract Jimmy
07:03Floyd Hasselbank.
07:07He's hit that face.
07:08Go.
07:09Go.
07:10Go.
07:14Chelsea certainly er.
07:16Competing well.
07:17And that epitomised there by Jodie Morris.
07:19Lunging at the ball.
07:20still in United's possession though.
07:23With the Elder of the Neville brothers.
07:24the younger Philip among the substitutes today
07:36here's Andy Cole
07:37and Sheringham
07:392-1 Manchester United
07:41and the partnership of Andy Cole
07:44and Teddy Sheringham
07:45continues to prosper
07:49but what a model in the Chelsea defence
07:53we see it again here
07:54the ball bouncing over the top of the defender
07:57Cole could look at there
07:58Sheringham certainly could
08:02and the confusion caused
08:04amid the Chelsea routes
08:06by the bounce of the ball initially
08:09Panucci could look at a touch on it
08:11Sheringham decisively could
08:14and Cole again will pressurise Desailly here
08:18but it's straight through to Kudicini
08:31Zola
08:33test of Chelsea's character now
08:35as the ball is over the top of Silvestre
08:37Flo should keep this in
08:38and there are three in the penalty area in blue
08:42but Zola's not the biggest
08:43and it never got to him
08:48well that's a shocking give away
08:50straight to Morris
08:52who then was caught by Sheringham
08:56surely Morris just not realising
08:58the position there
09:00and so it's United who sweep forward again
09:03Giggs may think of a shot
09:04still Giggs
09:05almost reminiscent of his goal against Arsenal there
09:08the way he was allowed to go on and on and on
09:11but at the end there was no goal
09:14not this time
09:15for the Welshman
09:17but it's Sheringham
09:18here
09:18Cole onside
09:20off the upright
09:21Beckham has to score
09:22Chelsea are in disarray
09:24Manchester United have three goals
09:39they're on to perfection
09:41and although he hit the upright
09:44it was meat and drink for David Beckham
09:47Manchester United have their third goal
09:50of an absorbing half
09:52and they're sharing them around
10:00Zola has hered into it
10:02but he's got Hasselbank
10:03able to sweep the ball wide
10:05per flow this time
10:06they do a cross in here
10:07and it was aimed towards Hasselbank
10:09flicked off the head of Keane
10:11and Irwin completes the clearance
10:16Beckham doesn't even allow the ball to run out
10:20there again that tireless effort
10:21from the Manchester United players
10:24that's a bad challenge though
10:25Cole has gone in on Leberth here
10:30well they did have a bit of a spat last season
10:41Leberth
10:42brilliantly booed
10:43finds Zola in the area
10:46final shot from Harley
11:02not a good one
11:02showing the ball to flow
11:04before releasing Sylvester
11:06deep cross
11:07Chelsea certainly can't afford to give anything else away
11:09but it's Beckham continuing the tilt
11:11and I think that's too far for Colt
11:14no he's brought it down
11:16and Chelsea again
11:17maybe accused of sleeping
11:19I think they thought the ball was going dead as I did
11:22Panucci couldn't get the
11:24masterly skills again from
11:26Mandy Colt
11:28and they really are asking a lot
11:30of questions of this Chelsea defence
11:32Manchester United, it's with Keane this time
11:34then with Giggs, first time
11:36ball in
11:38and finally Lesseau got
11:40the ball away as far as Zola
11:51two minutes to be added
11:57Desailly
11:57simply takes it away from
12:00Sheringham with ease
12:05Lesseau
12:08and he's cantered on down there
12:09and if Chelsea were to get a goal we would have a contest in the half
12:12Hasselbank calling for it
12:13it's Flo's header
12:14and it's gone in as well
12:17and Old Trafford
12:18absolutely silenced
12:20I think for a start people thought that
12:22Lesseau may have run the ball out
12:24but when he crossed
12:25time seemed to stand still
12:28but Torre André Flo has brought Chelsea right back into the contest on the stroke of half time
12:33with the header
12:34too hot for van der Haal
12:37and it's Manchester United 3
12:39Chelsea 2
12:40with Flo's first goal of the season
12:43and his first ever against Manchester United
12:48well I did say that it was the match of the season so far
12:52what a match it has been
12:53and Claudio Ranieri announces his arrival to the Premier League
12:57with 45 breathtaking minutes in front of him
13:00so the end of a half
13:03which has been unforgettable
13:04how can we live up to this in the second half
13:06we shall see shortly
13:07half time at Old Trafford
13:10staggeringly
13:10Manchester United 3
13:12Chelsea 2
13:18Melchiot has come on
13:19and it looks to be playing on the right side of midfield
13:24Di Matteo in the centre of that midfield
13:27alongside Jodie Morris
13:34and Gianfranco Zola
13:36is also on that right touchline
13:38it may just be a small positional adjustment made
13:42Mario Melchiot getting his chance
13:45he missed virtually the whole of last season
13:47after a couple of bad injuries
13:51he broke a bone in his foot twice
13:59Di Matteo stabs the ball in for Hasselbank
14:01a touchdown to Melchiot
14:02they're 3 against 3
14:04and Melchiot surely won't score from there
14:09as I wasn't quite sure what to do there
14:11Mario Melchiot
14:15the ball whisked across Van Bouguil's goal
14:17but never threatened it
14:30Hasselbank
14:31touchback for Di Matteo
14:33Manchester United do look square at times across the back
14:36and they've managed to find Melchiot in space down the right
14:39and there are 3 in blue shirts across the middle
14:42but it's the head of Johnson that meets the ball
14:45only out to Panucci
14:48the looks of a quality player
14:50and gets his cross ball in
14:53but there's nobody near it in blue
15:01I think Chelsea breathed new life into their ambitions for this match
15:05with that goal just before half time
15:07they were 3-1 down and might easily have gone 4-1
15:12but they are definitely in the contest
15:15and they're playing quite well in this half
15:19United at times as I've mentioned before looking vulnerable
15:22centrally in defence
15:24Lissot
15:26can't get beyond Beckham but he will win the corner kick
15:36Chelsea of course with only one first division title in their history
15:4145 years ago
15:43Ken Bates their chairman so desperate for success
15:46that's why here Viali was released from his contract
15:48and Ranieri brought in
15:50Bates has to finish first
15:52there's a chance
15:53maybe Flo sort of stumbled into that
15:56it looked as though he had to get a clear header there
15:58especially being 6 feet 5
16:00but he just failed to get a touch
16:03all happened quickly though
16:09but if anything Chelsea are bossing the half
16:15and they have a free kick too
16:19Jonsson on Flo
16:23exasperation there on the face of the Norwegian
16:25who's such a gentle giant
16:27and he universally never complains about anything
16:33but he's got this free kick
16:34and Zola is urging the referee's assistant to send Giggs back a bit
16:40he's got the cross in
16:41and Panucci nailed
16:43well he did get a touch with the header
16:44it virtually struck Van der Gaal I think
16:49but Christian Panucci very very close to what would have been his second goal for Chelsea
16:55here he is number two
16:57watch him steals in between the Manchester United defenders
17:00a little flick header and I think it hit the fist of Van der Gaal
17:05David Beckham has just come to the touchline
17:07because that wound has reopened
17:09they took off the huge plaster in the dressing room at half time
17:12one stitch inserted
17:14but the wound has reopened
17:16and of course that cannot be allowed
17:20so Manchester United down to 10 men
17:22and they've presented a chance here for Hasselbeck to make it 3-3
17:26but he's high and wide
17:29I don't think he expected the chance
17:31that was the problem there for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbeck
17:33but an error by Mikhail Silvestre
17:37they barge into one another Silvestre and Neville
17:41well I've referred to that lack of unity
17:43in the Manchester defence
17:44and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbeck
17:46almost extracting some reward from them
17:58good hustling from Morris
18:05well again you have the feeling that the next goal in this game
18:07is of vital importance
18:09and Cole's got the better of his man
18:11Andy Cole
18:12brilliant on the goal line
18:14kept out there by Graeme Lesseau
18:17and Andy Cole cannot believe it
18:19when I said brilliant I was referring to Lesseau
18:22it was brilliant also by Cole
18:24but look at this for a goal line save from Graeme Lesseau
18:28how did he get that ball over the top of the crossbar
18:30Andy Cole was destined to celebrate his seventh goal of the season
18:34until Lesseau intervened
18:38and you could see the joy etched on Lesseau's face
18:45sometimes you have to admire defending skills
18:48as much as attacking skills
18:49and certainly that was top draw stuff from Lesseau
18:53he's always given away another corner
18:58Cole's in the six yard area
19:00Keane, Sheringham, Youngston, Sylvester and Scholes
19:04will try and make their presence felt elsewhere in the area
19:09it's into the six yard box
19:11and did well here Cudicini
19:13gets more than a finger to the ball
19:16probably got two to it
19:23key moments in the game these
19:30a lovely passing from Manchester United
19:33breathtaking stuff
19:34and now Sheringham
19:35pings the ball across with the outside of his boot
19:38Cole desperately trying to beat away Zola
19:42fails in that ambition
19:45but there's a free kick I think against Andy Cole
19:50there's nothing to be dragged away
19:56he's got the way out to Lesseau
19:58very much the hero a couple of minutes ago
20:00and he kept that ball out
20:02flow
20:04again Gary Neville and Scholes this time
20:06getting one another's way
20:17and there's a slip but there's a foul by Giggs
20:20that's why Panucci went to ground
20:23push he says
20:24the referee agrees
20:32Hasselbach
20:33deft little header down into
20:34Morris' tracks
20:39Lesseau knows that both
20:40Flo and Hasselbach will be hoping for a cross ball
20:43as he seeks to get past Beckham
20:45and he did so very well
20:46it's Flo
20:46it's three apiece
20:50and superb play down the left
20:52initially by Graeme Lesseau
20:54and the strike
20:56his second of the afternoon
20:58now from Tori Andre Flo
20:59brings the match back level
21:03and it's David Beckham
21:05who gives second best here
21:06to Lesseau
21:07super running from the England international
21:10and a measured finish from the Norwegian
21:14and we have a scoreline of Manchester United 3
21:17Chelsea 3
21:19Flo has got his second goal of the season
21:22following hard on the heels of the first
21:2420 minutes to go
21:253-3
21:26Rallieri thrilled
21:32others will seek to get up in support of Cole
21:37one of those now being Scoles
21:39who is caught here by Lesseau
21:42correct decision
21:50United are going to make another substitution
21:52in a moment
21:53I can see Wes Brown getting ready for action
21:55and in fact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well
21:58so it will be a double switch
22:00and in fact it's Andy Cole who is coming off
22:09free kick for Manchester United now
22:11from Giggs
22:13he speared it in
22:15and it went dead centre over the crossbar
22:20see that Giggs shot again
22:22just flying over the top
22:24I don't get ever really troubled Cudicini
22:27here come United with Silvestro
22:34both sides in a curious way
22:35might settle for a draw now
22:41Chelsea having got back to 3-3
22:43having been 3-1 behind
22:44and United having conceded the last two goals in the game
22:48but they've got chances of their own now
22:50it's Solskjaer
22:52still squared for Giggs
22:54it should have been
22:55should have been
22:57he kicks the ground in despair
22:59perfectly laid on for him by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
23:02Ryan Giggs cannot believe he's not hit the target
23:05or at least forced a save out of Cudicini
23:08what an opening and what a glaring miss from the Welshman
23:13should have been 4-3
23:14it's still 3-3
23:17tremendous match
23:19all that is best about the Premier League
23:22encapsulated into this one
23:26which might yet have another roll of the dice to come
23:32Tanucci will take Chelsea's throw in on a line with the 18 yard area
23:36Flo will juggle
23:37and
23:39he's got the corner
23:40he did well
23:42despite the outstretched harm of Michael Silvestre
23:45it's Flo smiling
23:46can Chelsea capitalise
23:51it's 3-3
23:52and Chelsea have a corner kick
23:56Desailly
23:57it flicked off his head
23:58it's now Hasselbank
23:59who might look to curl it
24:00he has done
24:01chance for Le Boeuf
24:02back post into the side netting
24:06Hasselbank knew what he was doing there
24:08curled it over for Le Boeuf
24:10it'll be just seen as another result
24:13at the end of the
24:14long and arduous season
24:15but a healthy result nonetheless
24:19particularly for Chelsea
24:21Manchester United
24:22I can tell he will not be too upset
24:23about dropping a couple of points here
24:33referee Jones
24:34points to the tunnel
24:35it does end 3-3
24:36Claudio Ranieri has his first point
24:39as Chelsea manager
24:40there will be a healthy respect between the two bosses
24:43a memorable game here at Old Chafford
24:45and at the end of the day
24:47both sides are happy to settle for a point
24:50the bold facts are that
24:52Manchester United and Chelsea
24:53have drawn here
24:543-3
24:56Chelsea had spent around
24:58£34 million on new players
25:00and eventually finished
25:01sixth to qualify for Europe
25:03having taken charge with the club
25:05in 17th place
25:06it represented a satisfactory start
25:08for Claudio Ranieri
25:09Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank
25:11lived up to the pressure
25:12of being Chelsea's record purchase
25:14he was top scorer in the Premiership
25:16with 23 goals
25:17Manchester United then lost to Arsenal
25:19before going on an 8-game winning streak
