00:02and the England team which you've already seen
00:05with Adams and McManaman ruled out by injury
00:07only three survivors from the team that faced Germany in the semi-final four years ago
00:12Seaman, Ince and the captain Shearer
00:14who scored in the match and in the penalty shootout
00:17but who has not scored in his last seven internationals
00:21as Gary Lineker said, it's a big game for Shearer
00:25four changes from the German side that drew fitfully with Romania
00:29Babel switches to centre-back to replace Lineker
00:3120 years old Sebastian Dijsler comes in on the right
00:35in midfield Dietmar Harmon in place of Thomas Hessler
00:39fans are really turning this into an occasion Trevor
00:42yeah I think they're getting impatient waiting for the signal
00:45Kalina was funny when they came out to look at the pitch
00:48there was a handshake between him and Paul Ince
00:50I hope they have one during the game
00:52and straight from the kick-off Marcus Babel in a challenge with Alan Shearer
00:57England playing right to left in the first half
00:59towards the goal where most of their fans are sitting
01:04supporters in this stadium are not very far from the pitch as you can see
01:11forward by Babel but this time it hits Shearer
01:17now is there going to be a man marking job we'll see when Babel's taken this throw
01:21whether he picks Shearer up
01:26three England players going for that ball it was Sol Campbell who won it
01:34and Mattias just dropping back with Babel and Novotny in those three positions
01:41this is Novotny
01:46Jeremies
01:52Ziga
01:54Vincent Ziga had a chat when the teams came out to look at the pitch as well
02:00this is Scholes two Middlesbrough players of course
02:03Phil Neville
02:07and that was just intercepted there by Deisler
02:19well battles with Shearer at the moment Novotny with Owen
02:24and Ziga with Beckham
02:27leaving Mateus free
02:29that was Wise
02:34Kirsten
02:35cutting out his cheeks
02:36the force of the challenge
02:39Shearer
02:45Deepmar Harman
02:48looking for Karsten Janka
02:50cut out by Gary Neville
02:51this is Scholl
02:52and now Kirsten
02:53beaten by Campbell
02:54England first of the ball
03:00well the systems are as anticipated
03:02Mehmet Scholl is sort of the creative player in the midfield
03:07the man's got a fierce shot but I think it would favour the left footer
03:11there's Deepmar Harman's there as well
03:15referee at the moment getting the England wall back
03:17in which Babel is mixing
03:25it was Ziga
03:27and well over
03:31not much of a run up was there but
03:33certainly seen him
03:34better than that but
03:35always a bit when
03:36I think that's early in the game
03:37you've got to take the chance
03:39he's always done
03:40underneath it
03:41David Seaman had a trouble
03:47Gary Neville with the throw for England
03:49Beckham is in the penalty area
03:50so too behind him
03:52Shearer and Owen
03:52and Scholls
03:57Shearer's header on
04:00Scholls cut back
04:01corner to England
04:04there's a great cut back
04:05from Paul Scholls
04:06terrific defending
04:07by Ziga
04:08who got in there
04:09at the far post
04:10she was coming back in
04:11he'd got the initial header
04:12for the long throw
04:13there he is
04:14comes in
04:16back heading
04:16as it's crossed
04:17again
04:18it was Ziga who cleared it
04:19Beckham with the corner
04:20again it's Deep
04:22again it's Campbell
04:23and it's a foul by Campbell
04:39Yellen is again
04:40oh and he's got
04:41Nenet Scholl in here
04:42for Germany
04:43Scholl
04:43oh he could have
04:44squared that to Kirsten
04:45who was unmarked
04:48well just the movement
04:49stretched him
04:50you see Scholls
04:50starting on the left
04:51and he comes across the line
04:52look he's clear
04:53flat back four
04:54is very flat
04:55should have hit it
04:56I think with his right foot
04:57or squared it across
05:04Schürer with Babble
05:07it was always the defender's ball
05:09but at least England
05:10turned around
05:10they can push up
05:11now as a unit
05:12and try and get a little bit
05:12of pressure
05:13and get one or two
05:16crosses in and see
05:16how they can defend
05:17but at the moment
05:18they haven't really tested them out
05:20this is Scholls
05:22now Neville
05:25oh and the header
05:27is palmed against the post
05:30Michael Owen
05:33so unlucky
05:34good save by Kahn
05:37but England's first
05:39real incision
05:41and Germany
05:42just survived
05:46they are vulnerable
05:47defensive
05:47they've got to do that
05:49they've got to push up
05:50they've got to push up
05:50they've got the actual
05:51throwing
05:52and then that
05:53really came from the cross
05:54from Philip Neville
05:54very unlucky
05:55Michael Owen
05:56good header
05:58here's Philip Neville again
06:03oh and Beckham
06:04taken there
06:05by Ziga
06:08this is Scholls
06:10that wasn't a bad effort either
06:14that was a terrific effort
06:15another five yards further out
06:17it would have dipped
06:18quicker
06:19just a little bit too close
06:20before it came down
06:21got himself into position
06:23superbly
06:24hit it well
06:28this is the header
06:29by Michael Owen
06:30and a good one it was too
06:31and Oliver Kahn
06:32two hands against the post
06:36good tower
06:37because he's falling backwards
06:39he's watching
06:39wants to see it go in
06:40and it just comes out
06:42wonders if anyone's getting
06:44and still minutes show
06:46and this could break well
06:48for England
06:48because it's Paul Scholls
06:49with Beckham outside in
06:50Shearer and Owen
06:51both the other way
06:52here's Beckham
06:58oh and a pull away
06:59by Scholls
07:00beaten out by the goalkeeper
07:02brilliant ball from Beckham
07:03and great movement
07:04from Scholls
07:08well as I mentioned
07:09I didn't understand it
07:10there wasn't it
07:11filled away well
07:13Scholls look
07:13Beckham's looking up
07:14Shearer's talking
07:15to this side
07:16Scholls chests it down
07:17well
07:17hits it with his left
07:19but unfortunately
07:19just straight out
07:20Kahn
07:22there was a free kick
07:23for Germany
07:23on the far side
07:24meantime
07:25for a foul on Matthias
07:26now there's an offside
07:27decision against Janka
07:28it's all happening
07:29but that was the second time
07:30that Kahn
07:31has been called into action
07:32and Ziga
07:34is to come in on this
07:34as well
07:37Babel goes first
07:38oh and it was a crowd
07:39at the near post
07:40there
07:40pick up in England head
07:41I think
07:41it's another corner
07:44that was such a good delivery
07:45virtually impossible
07:47to deal with that
07:48keeper can't get there
07:49so many bodies in front
07:50fortunately cleared
07:51everyone at the back post
07:53Scholl will take this one
07:54Ziga is still in the penalty area
07:57so is Babel
07:59Babel makes the first run
08:01it's going to come
08:02off Sol Campbell
08:04oh and Dietmar Harmon
08:05was hanging back there
08:10it was a German injury
08:11and this will prolong
08:12probably the stoppage time
08:17overall Trevor
08:17an improved
08:19it was a better spell
08:20for England
08:21in the last 10 minutes
08:22oh yeah definitely
08:23it just gets sucked
08:24into the penalty area
08:24I mean fortunately
08:25Sol Campbell had the header
08:26then had to get out
08:27you can't leave him
08:28free on the edge of the penalty
08:29but generally speaking
08:30in the last 10 minutes
08:31you felt
08:32England get a bit of
08:34possession better
08:35they've stretched them
08:36a little bit
08:36in the attack
08:37and of course
08:38it started really
08:39with the Owen header
08:40and then Scholls
08:41has got in there
08:41once or twice too
08:45away from the acrobatics
08:47and back with the action
08:48we've got Ziga
08:49and here's Matthias
08:51who has brought the ball
08:52out a couple of times
08:53in this period of play
08:56now Deisler
09:00half time arrives
09:03with nothing between them
09:05but England certainly
09:06coming close
09:07as Paul Scholls
09:08with a good effort
09:09made possible by Beckham
09:11and Michael Owen
09:12with a header
09:12from a Philipp Neville cross
09:14that the goalkeeper
09:14turned onto the post
09:16Roto Matthias
09:17in Germany
09:17having a lot of possession
09:19early in the match
09:20but not making the most of it
09:21Mehmet Scholl
09:22perhaps the closest
09:23for the Germans
09:24when he came in
09:25from the right hand side
09:26to test David Seaman
09:28but overall
09:29defences
09:30were more or less
09:31in charge
09:31and at half time
09:32in Charleroi
09:33it's England nil
09:35Germany nil
09:37we've had that one header
09:38from Michael Owen
09:40that was turned onto the top
09:42which might have given England
09:43the lead
09:44as it is
09:45Germany will start
09:46the second half
09:47playing from the right
09:50and here's Christian Ziga
09:56Jelenis
09:57Ziga forward straight away
09:59Kirsten to his right
10:00oh they both tumble over there
10:02and the referee
10:03has given
10:04a free kick
10:05to the Germans
10:06right on the edge
10:06of the England penalty area
10:09now Ziga
10:11tried to
10:12strike one
10:12with his left foot
10:13from here
10:13in the first half
10:14early on
10:15hit the wall
10:17and he's putting the ball
10:18down again Trevor
10:19with Scholl
10:20it's a much closer position
10:21it's a better shooting position
10:23though a little bit further out
10:24I think
10:24Ziga would fence
10:25here there's Scholl
10:26certainly looking to see
10:27if the right footer
10:28could do it
10:28but
10:30it was a bit
10:30slothy defending
10:31wasn't it
10:32they opened up
10:32too easily
10:33I thought
10:33just at the start
10:33of the half
10:35Ziga doing the pointing
10:37Scholl standing
10:38just to his left
10:38danger for England
10:46that Ziga
10:48lives over the bar
10:54didn't go much for a curl
10:55just more power
10:56it was the power
10:56the side that David Seaman
10:58was
10:59just started to drift
11:01towards the middle
11:01and then went back
11:02that side
11:03to leave
11:04to see it go
11:04over the angle
11:11and maybe win the game
11:12who knows
11:14that's the idea
11:15I hope
11:16oh yeah
11:16I'm sure it is
11:17here's Beckham
11:17and
11:19tumbles over
11:20after a challenge
11:21by Ziga
11:21free kick to England
11:30Owen and
11:31Shearer being supported
11:32over on the edge
11:33of the penalty area
11:34by Scholes
11:36now
11:36Ince goes to join them
11:38Phil Neville trots up
11:39from left back
11:42Owen coming in near post
11:44Shearer
11:45goal for England
11:47oh and points
11:48but Alan Shearer
11:49the man for the big occasion
11:55they're cheering here
11:57and you'll be up on your feet
11:58at home I should imagine
12:00Alan Shearer for England
12:01his first goal
12:02in eight internationals
12:03what a moment to get it
12:04Owen came in first
12:06it went on to Shearer
12:07and he guided the header
12:09away from Karn
12:10that is a fantastic free kick
12:12it's such a long way up
12:14but the pace of that
12:15and the distance
12:16so difficult to deal with
12:17goes right across the face
12:19of the goal
12:19you could not have hit
12:20a more perfect free kick
12:22across the six yard block
12:23Alan Shearer waiting
12:24keeping his fingers crossed
12:25everyone miss it
12:27please
12:27it's set up there
12:28waiting to be tucked away
12:29he used all of his experience
12:31and England are in front
12:33oh look at the reaction there
12:35from Kevin Keegan
12:36and Arthur Cox in company
12:37but Germany around the attack
12:38on the pitch
12:41Alan Shearer's
12:4229th goal
12:44in his 62nd international
12:45but Germany are coming back
12:46straight away
12:47that's Karsten Janka
12:49but his first Shearer
12:50since he scored
12:52against Belgium
12:53at Sunderland
12:54in the autumn
12:57can't emphasize
12:58what a wonderful free kick
13:00that is
13:00the distance it went
13:01at the pace it went
13:02I mean
13:02they just didn't cope with it
13:04and didn't deal with it
13:05and Shearer waited
13:06at the back post
13:07tapped it away
13:10moment to lift
13:11all English hearts
13:12question now is
13:13can they
13:14capitalize on that
13:16but perhaps
13:17after what happened
13:17the other day
13:18can they
13:19hold it for a while
13:23it'll worry
13:24it'll be if we get
13:242-0
13:25that probably
13:28Shearer the man
13:29who put England ahead
13:30in that semi-final
13:31four years ago
13:32at Wembley
13:33when the Germans
13:34came back to 1-1
13:35they only held the lead
13:36I think for about
13:3713 minutes that night
13:39let's hope it's a bit
13:40longer today
13:40for England
13:43the opportunity's there
13:44the get forward
13:45I still think
13:46they're capable of getting
13:46another goal
13:47against Germany
13:48don't just sit back
13:49and hold on to the lead
13:50it's Beckham
13:51with the free kick again
14:00Shearer
14:01Owen and Scholes
14:02in the centre
14:07the heads get
14:08overconfident
14:09Germany
14:09came back against
14:10Romania in their
14:11first match
14:12and they were of course
14:13masters of the recovery
14:15for many years
14:16that's Ziga
14:20Deizler
14:23it's a good run
14:24by the youngster
14:25Jeremies
14:27Scholes
14:30this is Babel
14:36headed away by Campbell
14:38as far as Matthias
14:39who's coming forward
14:41more again now
14:47Harman to Babel
14:50here's Janka
14:51oh he got in front of
14:52his defender there
14:54I think he should have
14:55scored
14:56he did the hard time
14:58just flicked it up
14:59and I just think
14:59he got a half a yard
15:01on South Campbell
15:01and somehow got underneath
15:03it
15:05this is the ball
15:05that's in
15:06just gets a deflection
15:08doesn't it
15:08bobbles in
15:10just went between
15:11the legs
15:12if he kept it down
15:13that would have been in
15:13I don't think
15:14David Sewell
15:15would have had a chance
15:17now they'll dig in
15:18the next few minutes
15:19not give them
15:20a little opening again
15:24Novotny
15:29played back by Kirsten
15:30to Matthias
15:31and here's Scholes
15:32and David Sebel
15:33off his line
15:33and then it's Scholes
15:37I can't believe that
15:38he's gone through
15:39the penalty
15:40I mean
15:40five, six England players
15:42in the penalty box
15:43look at how many players are
15:44look he's got behind
15:45Sol Campbell
15:45only needs a shout
15:47Paul Inch was just behind him
15:50fortunately
15:50it wasn't really a shot
15:51or a cross
15:52was it
15:52I think it was a shot
15:53for the far post
15:54but he's dragged it
15:55he's bobbled it
15:56but I mean
15:57nobody picked him up
15:58at all
15:59that's a real let off
16:01for England
16:01Mamet Scholl
16:02who scored the equaliser
16:03against Romania
16:04the other day
16:06dragging that one
16:07wide of the far post
16:15Janke with the dummy
16:16there's Scholl
16:17and Gerrard
16:18good cover
16:19by the man who's just come on
16:20I think that's part of the reason
16:22why he was brought on
16:23to help it pull in
16:24to do with Scholl
16:25Scholl's going to creep
16:25further and further
16:26into that central position
16:28behind the front two
16:29they've got to be marked
16:29Scholl about to take a corner
16:31Ziga is forward
16:34so too
16:36is Babbel
16:40and Babbel gets up
16:41oh and Ted
16:42and Janke
16:43oh
16:43don't believe it
16:44Kirsten first
16:45and then Janke
16:46missed great chances
16:47to equalise
16:48what an escape
16:50for England
16:51what an escape
16:53goodness me
16:53I can't believe
16:55Janke missed the rebound
16:58Seaman kicked away
16:59the first shot
17:00from Kirsten
17:01well he just
17:02sort of
17:03turned on the half turn
17:04just scuffed it
17:06and Janke
17:07totally off balance
17:08he actually could have
17:09stopped it
17:09and picked his spot
17:11well that would have
17:12been a blow
17:12for Keegan
17:13and company
17:17Portugal still to play
17:19tackled by Gerrard
17:21didn't quite get there
17:21neither did he
17:22Campbell
17:22Keogh needs to
17:23and Germany
17:24had a couple of players
17:25waiting there
17:26on the edge
17:26of the England penalty area
17:27and they still have
17:29it's Ziga
17:35and it's Scholl
17:36but no tower
17:39couldn't we just
17:39keep it for 30 seconds
17:41just so we can
17:41relieve
17:43sit back and relax
17:44and enjoy the lead
17:45for a bit
17:46we can actually
17:47sit back and relax
17:48here can we
17:51normally sides
17:52certainly
17:53club sides
17:54of old
17:54you know
17:55they take the sting
17:55out of it
17:56they keep possession
17:59the screaming
18:00piercing whistles
18:01from the England
18:02supporters here
18:03in Charleroi
18:04won't affect
18:05the time
18:06that the referee
18:07will add on
18:07this is Harman
18:08for Germany
18:09there's plenty
18:09in there for them
18:10here
18:10diving header
18:11by Sol Campbell
18:14and Novotny
18:15to Matthias
18:16and he lifts one up
18:17for Karsten Janka
18:18and Rink
18:19is in there as well
18:20and nearly got a touch
18:21there's a little
18:22nudge on Sol Campbell
18:23take your time
18:24David Seward
18:25as we get
18:26Portugal scored
18:27in the fourth minute
18:28of added time
18:28so England
18:29probably won't know
18:30that because they
18:31were getting changed
18:31for this game
18:32but we've got to
18:33keep their concentration
18:34I don't want to mention
18:35how near the end
18:37the goal was
18:37all those years ago
18:40for Germany
18:40at Wembley
18:43here's Matthias
18:51Ziga
18:55forward again
18:56towards Boda
18:57Keown jumping
18:58Gary Neville
18:58wondering what's
18:59going to happen
18:59it's a goal kick
19:00huge sigh of relief
19:02at the England end
19:04everyone looked
19:05where's he pointed
19:07licking the lips
19:08I bet there's no
19:09saliva there
19:10he's got the vital
19:12goal
19:12Alan Shearer
19:1930 seconds
19:21of the stoppage
19:21time remaining
19:22that's how close
19:23we are
19:24to an England victory
19:27against Germany
19:30Alan Shearer's goal
19:31on 53 minutes
19:33has it condemned
19:34Eric Riebeck's team
19:35to a defeat
19:36England have the ball
19:38they have the free kick
19:39they have time
19:39on their side
19:41it can only be seconds
19:48and here's Rink
19:49Keown needs to get
19:50a foot in here
19:51he does
19:53but the referee says
19:54carry on
19:55this is Scholl
19:56no that's harmless
20:00surely that's going to be
20:01it for last chance
20:03he's looked at his watch
20:04two or three times
20:05Kalina
20:06but still he runs on
20:07headed by Novotny
20:11Shearer
20:11now he's got David
20:13Beckham going through
20:14the centre
20:14Shearer plays for time
20:20and still the referee
20:22doesn't blow
20:24Balak
20:26forward by Novotny
20:27offside
20:28Janka
20:28the flag's up
20:29the flag is up
20:30the referee hasn't seen it
20:32the flag's still up
20:33on the far side
20:34and now he's taking it down
20:39and forward towards
20:40Janka again
20:41and the header on
20:42towards Boda
20:43and out by Gary Neville
20:48this is agonising
20:50but it's over
20:50and England have done it
20:52Alan Shearer's goal
20:54gives England only
20:56their third victory
20:57in 15 attempts
20:59against Germany
21:00and their first
21:01in true competition
21:02in a finals competition
21:03since that famous day
21:06in 1966
21:11Alan Shearer with the winning goal
21:14and the celebration
21:16start in Charleroi
21:18England have opened up
21:20their account
21:20in the European Championship
21:22that's the most important thing
21:23three points
21:24with Romania still to play
21:26really gives England
21:28a chance of qualification
21:29for the quarter-final
21:32and it might not have healed
21:34the 30 years of hurt
21:35but it certainly put
21:36an elastiflust over the wound
21:38this one
21:39the Germans defeated
21:42and forced to concede
21:44that in the second half
21:45England got hold of the game
21:48and did enough
21:49to deservedly win it
21:51it was close
21:52it always is against Germany
21:53but what a nice change
21:54this time Trevor
21:55England have come out
21:56on the right side
21:58well it was all about
22:00effort wasn't it
22:01Kevin Keegan
22:01got his side motivated
22:03it wasn't a classic performance
22:05but they worked hard
22:07they closed them down
22:07they hung in there
22:08when they had to
22:09David Beckham
22:10hopefully every England supporter
22:12will get behind him
22:12because it was a wonderful
22:13delivery for the Shearer goal
22:15and let them enjoy tonight
22:16because they'll have to long wait
22:18it's a moment to save them
22:20it certainly is
22:21and look how pleased
22:22Kevin Keegan is
22:23he knows now
22:23a result against Romania
22:25and England will be through
22:28it's a terrific
22:31moment to savour this
22:32for those that have seen
22:33England defeated
22:34not just by Germany
22:36but by many other teams
22:37in international competition
22:38down the years
22:40but this is an important victory
22:42in the widest possible context
22:45in terms of the tournament
22:47in terms of England's confidence
22:49in terms of the Keegan regime
22:51and every player being warmly congratulated
22:54by the coach
22:57and Alan Shearer typically
22:59coming up with the winning goal
23:01just when everybody said
23:02that the well was running dry
23:04from his point of view
23:07and the red shirts
23:09are lucky for England
23:10once again
23:10just as they were
23:1434 years ago
23:17and those that were here tonight
23:19in Charleroi
23:20will always remember that
23:22and Kevin Keegan
23:23is ready to talk
23:25Kevin your reaction
23:26to that so important win

23:35and the fans here were magnificent
23:36you know
23:38players had to run the legs off out there
23:40we didn't have a lot of the ball at times
23:41but you know
23:42the character came through
23:43and maybe that little bit
23:44togetherness that we've got
23:45it might get us a long way
23:47in this competition
23:47if we just start to believe
23:48in ourselves a bit more
23:49well suddenly it's turned round
23:50it's in your hands
23:51a point against Romania

24:20because it's a long time
24:22for the fans out there
24:23I'm delighted for them
24:24one or two sharp reminders
24:25though I mean
24:26they had a couple of great chances
24:27of course
24:27I mean look
24:28you know
24:29people can knock teams down
24:30as much as they want
24:31but you know
24:32it's like the English
24:33the Germans have got a lot of
24:34they've got a lot of confidence
