00:02Southampton's 23rd successive season in the top flight would be their last at the Dell.
00:06A new stadium was rising on the south coast of their usual relegation flirtation.
00:11However, they'd lost their opening home match of the season to Coventry
00:14and were looking for rather better against Liverpool.
00:17The Reds had lost to Arsenal and had two players sent off in their previous outing
00:21and needed to bounce back with three points on a ground they normally did well at
00:25with four wins in their last six visits.
00:29Last season's player of the year for Southampton,
00:31Dean Richards was back from suspension to bolster the defence,
00:35but manager Glenn Honnold dropped goalkeeper Paul Jones.
00:38Neil Moss was called upon.
00:40Latvian Marian Bahars made his first start of the season.
00:43Matt Letizier was only a substitute.
00:47For Liverpool, England pair Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard were back in the starting line-up,
00:51but their international colleague Emil Heskey was out with a knee injury.
00:54French under-21 Jimmy Traore continued at left back,
00:58though manager Gerrard Houllier was close to completing the signing of Christian Ziga from Middlesbrough.
01:03Your match commentator is John Champion.
01:06All things being equal and barring cup draws later in the season.
01:11Liverpool's last ever visit to the dell.
01:14Southampton's final season here.
01:16And here's Steven Gerrard.
01:17Dean Richards in the way for the Saints.
01:21Needless to say the ground is packed out.
01:24Even though capacity numbers no more than 15,000.
01:28That's why Saints are moving to St. Mary's.
01:32So that financially they can compete.
01:44That's Draper.
01:46And now the Latvian Pahars.
01:49On for the Norwegian, Tessa.
01:58Uwe Rössler.
02:03Blocked behind by Onsho.
02:08Southampton's first corner.
02:13And the forces are gathering for it.

02:33Tessam.
02:35Richards has stayed forward.
02:37That looked like a hand.
02:39It was Onsho.
02:41Who got in the way of the driven ball from Kachloul.
02:45But it was at point blank range.
02:51Oh, get off!
02:53Get off!
02:55Pahars.
02:57Pahars.
02:58Pahar got just enough on it.
03:00And it's come out to Smica.
03:06Owen.
03:11And Gerrard.
03:15Well, he's only scored once in his Liverpool career so far.

04:16And the marking was far from tight, Aron.
04:28Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League last season.
04:33But it's ten years and counting since the last of their 18 league championships.
04:48And it was for Southampton, 15th was all they could manage in the last campaign.
04:5211 points clear of the drop and so earning their 23rd consecutive season in the top division.
04:59Tessam.
05:01Well, it was a chance.
05:03Uwe Russela kicks the base of the post in frustration.
05:06Good work by Tessam.
05:10The former Norwegian policeman.
05:14The German couldn't keep the header down.
05:21Dodd.
05:24Pahas.
05:25Tessam.
05:27Liverpool's throw.
05:39Liverpool have won on this ground on four of their last six Premier League visits.
05:46It's been a happy hunting ground and one that they'll be sad to say farewell to.
05:50Smitsa.
05:51Gerrard.
05:56Can't be it straight offside.
06:02Neil Moss in goal today.

11:20Go! Go!
11:27Carragher.
11:30Smica.
11:32Bambi.
11:42An obliging height for Neil Moss.
11:47Seven seasons since Southampton's last league win at home to Liverpool.
11:52It was 4-2 with a hat-trick from Matt Letissier.
11:56He was on the bench today.
11:57Here's a chance though.
11:59And it should have been the equalising goal for Dean Richards.
12:05That's two good-headed opportunities Southampton have spurned now.
12:08Carragher's first and now Richards.
12:13Carragher's that time the creator.
12:20Unmarked, free of encumbrances, should have been on the score sheet.
12:28That's the half-time whistle.
12:30Southampton troop off to a chorus of boos, although they've improved as the half has gone on.
12:34But Michael Owen, the deadly assassin of Liverpool, scored after 24 minutes and they lead 1-0.
12:48Liverpool boasted the best defence in the Premier League last season.
12:51They conceded just 30 goals all season long.
12:55And if they keep a clean sheet here at the Dell, they win.
12:59It's as simple as that, their equation for the second half.
13:02Glenn Hoddle, late returning.
13:07Along with John Gorman, his trusted assistant.
13:14This is Cash Law.
13:18Cash Law has continued his run, across comes Herpier.
13:23Draper.
13:25Oakley forward with the outside of the boot.
13:29Possibilities here for Southampton.
13:30How long do they want?
13:34Farhaz was arriving at the far post.
13:36The cross was well beyond him from Mark Draper.
13:43And you just feel, for Southampton's state of mind as much as anything else,
13:48that they need something to encourage them soon.
13:51That's something being a goal.
14:10Gerrard came off Richards.
14:12Came through obligingly.
14:14And a free kick on the edge of the area is the result.
14:20Smietze sent tumbling by Klaus Lundekvarn.
14:29This is almost too close for the comfort of the taker.
14:34There's hardly room to get the ball up over the wall and down again in time.
14:38Glenn Hoddle would probably have managed it.
14:41It's going to be Dietmar Haman.
14:43And the wall stood firm and did its job.
14:48Gave it a fair whack too.
14:49And Draper takes a couple of deep breaths.
14:54Having absorbed the impact.
14:56Good job he turned his hip.
14:58Smietze.
15:00Herpia!
15:05Liverpool have just doubled their lead.
15:11Smile from the manager.
15:12As the Finnish centre-back scores only his third goal in Liverpool colours.
15:18Pulled away from his marker.
15:19Richards.
15:20Header high beyond the flailing arms of the goalkeeper into the roof of the net.
15:29Pass.
15:34Tessem.
15:36Mark Draper went for the near post.
15:39Just made sure that Sander Westerveld was still awake.
15:46The Dutch international was.
15:48Fortunately for Liverpool.
15:56Cash Lowell up there.
16:01Westerveld looking for the quick delivery.
16:04Which is not going to be possible on this occasion.
16:09Here's Smietze.
16:11Outside of the boots.
16:17Wayne Bridge.
16:19With a touch.
16:25Just to take it away from Owen, the potential recipient.
16:35Smietze.
16:57It's all Liverpool right now.
17:11Smietze.
17:12Michael Owen.
17:14And still.
17:15And three.
17:18Lovely ball by Smietze to play him in.
17:22And Michael Owen may well say to you that Southampton are his favourite opponents.
17:27Because that's now seven goals in seven games against the Saints.
17:31Two of them today.
17:33And Liverpool have what should really be a winning lead.
17:40Liverpool at their best.
17:43Short, intricate passing movement.
17:47Finished wonderfully well.
17:5361 goals in 119 games now.
17:56And counting.
18:01Awkward clearance by Babbel.
18:05And a miskick by Westerveld.
18:07Which he's fortunate to get away with.
18:11It was an eccentric piece of goalkeeping.
18:16St. Matt is out there.
18:20He always makes a difference to Southampton.
18:23Today, off the bench.
18:28Babbel.
18:39Harman.
18:41Pulls nicely for Draper.
18:47Farhars.
18:52Moncho in the way.
18:54Here's Letizia.
18:56And Traore saves the day.
18:59Clearance off the line.
19:06Letizia already is making a difference.
19:13And having won the corner, he'll take it too.
19:23Richards.
19:26Resounding thud as ball.
19:29Cannoned into bar.
19:36One or two seeds of hope though now for Southampton.
19:39It's a long way back from three down though.
19:44Draper.
19:50Tessam.
20:00And Southampton deserve that.
20:0417 minutes left for play.
20:06And now they trail 3-1.
20:09Despairing effort by Ancho on the line.
20:12In vain.
20:18Burgeoning talent of Marion Pajas making a mark.
20:23Not without hope.
20:30Letizia.
20:33Taha El-Kalej.
20:35Nice sidestep.
20:36And a shot that lacked power.
20:40Taha.
20:41Taha.
20:41Signed from Benfica in March.
20:44Southampton paid £300,000.
20:46Scored in his debut.
20:4872 caps for Morocco.
20:54Taha.
20:59And beating.
21:05And suddenly all the play is going in one direction.
21:07towards that Liverpool goal.
21:15Taha.
21:20Guided out by Harman.
21:22Southampton throw.
21:27It's Draper.
21:31And it's Taha.
21:33Taha.
21:34Taha.
21:39And now that hope is very real.
21:45Southampton have got five minutes.
21:48Five minutes plus stoppage time.
21:51To rescue something.
21:54Anything they get would be very unlikely reward considering they were three down.
22:00Beatty's header.
22:01Beatty's header.
22:02Helped on and in.
22:03By Taha El-Kalej.
22:07Bridge.
22:09Taha.
22:15Bridge.
22:30Babel with the throw
22:33Owen
22:35Murphy trying to relieve some of this
22:37Siege-like pressure
22:39The goal now would of course finish it for Liverpool
22:42Steve Staunton
22:45That's not going to finish anything
22:52Hit and hope, no expectation
22:59Free kick to Southampton
23:03Owen disagrees
23:06And we're now moving into minute number 92
23:10Which will be the very last of them
23:14Here's Bridge
23:18Gerrard
23:22Robust challenge, but a legal one
23:23It's Letizia
23:26What can he conjure up?
23:28High and hanging
23:30Oh, and it's Pajas!
23:34They've only gone and done it
23:373-0 down with 17 minutes to play
23:42It's 3-3
23:47And Liverpool put under pressure
23:50Asked questions
23:51Have been unable to come up with the answers
23:56It's a wonderful comeback
23:58By the Saints of Southampton
24:00Capped by Paha's second goal
24:05And all they want now here is the whistle
24:09And there it is!
24:11And there it is!
24:12What a game!
24:14What a comeback!
24:17What a story!
24:19What an ovation!
24:23They seem dead and gone
24:25At 3 down
24:27A couple of goals from Owen
24:28One from Herpia
24:293 up in 64 minutes
24:31Liverpool
24:31But then
24:32On came Letizia
24:34And how the game changed
24:37Marion Paha's got his first
24:39That gave them a little hope
24:42Burgeoning hope from Taha's close range header
24:45And then in the 92nd minute
24:47With Glenn Hoddle pleading them on from the bench
24:50Marion Paha's has rescued the most unlikely point
24:56Well it promised to be their best season in the Premiership
24:58But for Southampton it ended in some disarray
25:01As Glenn Hoddle left to take over at Spurs in March
25:04But the team safely finished in 10th place
25:07And in the last ever competitive match at Adele
25:09The talismanic Matthew Letizia came on late
25:12To score the last ever goal
25:14Liverpool managed a unique treble
25:16Winning the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup
25:18They also finished 3rd in the Premiership
25:21Thank you
