Rain has created an extra layer of difficulty at one of Australia's toughest trail running events with West Macs Monster runners pushing through wet and slippery conditions in Central Australia. Competitors in the 231 kilometre ultra marathon continued through the night along the Larapinta Trail while runners in the 128 kilometre event set off this morning.

00:03For the first time in Westmac Monster history, runners are tackling the Larapinta Trail in
00:09the rain.
00:11The 231km course, the Sonder Monster, started on Friday morning from Mount Sonder, with
00:17runners continuing through the night as rain began falling from about 3am.
00:22The runners are getting here and saying it's not even worth changing their gear because
00:25they're just going to get wet again anyway.
00:26Organisers say the wet conditions have made an already brutal trail run even harder.
00:32With the rain, definitely difficult to navigate, difficult to see through the raindrops at night
00:37as well, through your head torch.
00:393, 2, 1.
00:44But runners on the 128km course were undeterred, setting off from Ellery Creek Big Hole in the
00:50morning towards Alice Springs.
00:52The rain probably adds some interesting factors, but just maybe change your approach.
00:59For some, the race is deeply personal.
01:02My father passed away in February, so I'll be running for him today.
01:07More races are scheduled for Sunday, including a 65km event and two 25km waves. The first runners
01:15tackling the entire 231km trail are expected to finish at Alice Springs Telegraph Station from
01:21Sunday morning.
