00:02Polling booths have opened here in Stafford, in Brisbane's inner north.
00:06The seat became vacant following the death of former MP Jimmy Sullivan last month.
00:11Labor has held Stafford for nine of the last ten elections,
00:15and today it's running Luke Richmond, a lawyer and former assistant state secretary,
00:21in a bid to hold on to the seat.
00:23This is LNP candidate Fiona Hammond's second attempt here.
00:26She's a long-time Brisbane city councillor who helped secure a 6% swing to the LNP at the 2024
00:34state election.
00:35Now, Labor has framed this contest as a referendum on health,
00:39while Premier David Crisofulli says it's a test of voter sentiment on his fuel security agenda,
00:46including plans to drill, refine and store fuel here in Queensland.
00:51We've been speaking to voters this morning about what issues are top of their minds.
00:55Here's what they had to say.
00:57Last election went LNP, mainly for the stadium,
01:00but then this time Labor for the lack of pay rise for the teachers from LNP.
01:06Really safer communities.
01:08We've had a lot of friends and family that have had violent crime and violent home invasion,
01:13so I think the most important thing for us is actually to have safe communities and safe streets.
01:17We can't continue to have red running the local house.
01:21It's ridiculous.
01:21The issues are not dealt with.
01:24We need people with a business brain looking after Australians first back in the lower house,
01:28and that'll run through to the next federal election cycle, in my opinion.
01:31I really want to support the NDIS, especially for my mother who's disabled.
01:36I want funding not to be cut, and the cuts are scary.
01:39And while One Nation is buoyed by its recent wins at the federal level,
01:43they will not be contesting this by-election.
