00:01In Brisbane's north, by-election battle lines have been drawn.

00:13Fuel costs, housing costs and food costs.
00:17Cost of living, you know, as is for everybody.
00:20The contest was sparked by the death of former Labor and independent MP Jimmy Sullivan.
00:27Stafford is Labor heartland.
00:30It's won in nine of the last ten elections.
00:34Luke Richmond is hoping to continue that dominance and wants the poll to be a referendum on health.
00:40The LNP were a government that said they weren't going to make cuts to health,
00:44but the reality is that they are cutting to the bone.
00:47Former Brisbane City Councillor Fiona Hammond has put her hand up for the LNP
00:52after an unsuccessful run in the last election.
00:55We want us to have our own fuel reserves right here in Queensland,
00:59so we're not reliant on overseas fuel.
01:03The Greens' Jess Lane is also back for another tilt after a strong showing in 2024.
01:10We're going to be fighting to cap rents and really improve cost of living.
01:15A notable absence in a crowded field of candidates is One Nation,
01:20saying its focus is on the next state election in 2028.
01:25It gives clearer air on the right for the LNP, but it remains the underdog.
01:31It will be quite seismic if the LNP have a significant swing to them.
01:36For some, the choice is simple.
01:38Who looks the nicest? Trustworthy.
01:42Early voting is now open with polling day on May the 16th.
01:46Remember the answer in that process.
