00:15You
00:16Just starting to rain now and wins picking up
00:30Oh
01:09This is not fiction, this is fact
01:12Well over 50% of all people that get lost in the wilderness are either hunters or anglers
01:17And like all survival situations, it happens so easily
01:21The weather might be great, the day is warm and sunny and the wind light
01:25You've got a good boat and fishing tackle and you'll only be gone a few hours
01:30And yet in one instant, one turnaround of circumstances
01:34A situation can turn into an ordeal and sometimes even a nightmare of epic proportions
01:39My son Logan and I are putting ourselves into a scenario that happens for real every year
01:49This is a common story
01:52Nearly every fisherman's been through it, especially if you go on flying trips
01:59In this case, with my son, so it's a father and son trip
02:06Plan the day, it's the big long day
02:08Boat for quite a few hours down the lake
02:10Maybe even pack a lunch
02:12End up at a set of rapids like this
02:14Spend the whole day fishing
02:24Then you go to leave
02:30And either your motor won't start
02:31Or you're out of gas
02:33Now you're in a survival situation
02:36And that's the case for Logan and I
02:38We're stranded
02:39At the bottom of the lake
02:41Miles from safety
02:42Miles from our cabin
02:45Here, in northern Ontario
02:52The camera that followed us in this far
02:54Leaves us here alone
02:56And in five or six days
02:57A plane will come for us
02:59And we'll hope to signal it from wherever we end up
03:01There are cabins dotted here and there on this lake
03:04And we need to get to whichever one is closest
03:07But that's many miles away
03:11So at this point
03:13We've just got to put all the realities together
03:15There's no way of paddling ourselves home
03:19Normally, I would say we stop and do all of our assessment check
03:24Go through everything we've got
03:26But in this case, because the sun's going down
03:29And because there's a ton of firewood
03:31I'm actually going, sort of breaking my
03:33Fire?
03:33Yeah, yeah, get a fire going
03:35And then we can have a big fire going
03:37So we've got it going through the night
03:38What I'm thinking is
03:39Why don't you let me get the fire going
03:40Okay
03:41Why don't you clean the fish
03:42Sounds good
03:45Well, Logan works on the fish
03:51The reality is that we're
03:52We're in a
03:53What is
03:54Well, it's not an established campsite
03:55But it's a place that people do frequent to fish
03:57There's even actually in the fire pit
03:59There's a grate and an old frying pan
04:01So it doesn't make it not be a survival situation
04:03It still is
04:04But at least we have a few advantages
04:07And I've got something
04:09That I'm pretty sure
04:11I can start a fire with
04:12Because we do not have matches
04:13And we do not have a lighter
04:15But we can make a spark
04:16We've got strikers
04:17Found this big old frying pan
04:19Just around the campsite
04:20So I'm going to use it to cook up the fish with
04:29Too many bugs
04:31Often what I find is the best thing
04:32In a situation like this
04:33Is to get Logan doing something
04:35That's familiar to him
04:37That feels comfortable
04:39Like cleaning the fish
04:41Because in a survival situation
04:43If you can feel comfortable
04:44And do things that are familiar
04:47Psychologically you're just a little stronger
04:48It's a lot to think about
04:49When you find yourself in a survival ordeal
04:53Someday Logan may find himself
04:55In a survival situation
04:56Where all the familiarity is absent
04:58Like in a jungle or a desert
05:00For now as his father
05:02And the one with the skills
05:03My job will have the added pressure
05:05Of keeping his motivation up
05:07And keeping him from becoming
05:09Too casual about survival
05:10Because that's when bigger problems can strike
05:14This place might get used a lot
05:15But I think it only gets used a lot
05:17In the spring
05:18It's been a while
05:19Since people have been here for sure
05:21A nice campsite is one thing
05:23When you're on a well-stocked camping trip
05:25But when you're stuck there
05:26Days away from safety
05:28It might as well be in a jungle
05:30Survival is still about adapting
05:31And using whatever means you can
05:33To make it through
05:34We've got some bug spray
05:36The bug spray is highly flammable
05:38So theoretically
05:40A spark
05:42Plus a highly flammable substance
05:46Should equal the fire
05:47I want to do this quick
05:49Before the spray evaporates
05:51Bug spray quickly runs out
05:53Which is why I usually suggest bug jackets
05:55And screens for an emergency kit
05:58Whoa-ho!
06:00Nice!
06:01That worked like a charm
06:04See that look?
06:05Yeah
06:05Awesome
06:08Beautiful
06:09Man, that bug spray took that spark
06:12Bang!
06:13It was like gasoline
06:15It's good to know
06:16It's kind of dangerous
06:18We have the advantage of starting off
06:20With the day's catch
06:21The hope is
06:22We won't be skunked
06:23When it comes to fishing
06:24For survival
06:25Too often lost victims
06:27Waste their first 24 hours
06:28Being complacent
06:29When in fact
06:30They should kick right into action
06:31On the other hand
06:33It's good to settle
06:34And get organized
06:35Before making any rash moves
06:37Alright, fire
06:39Eat up our fish
06:40And the sun's dropping down
06:42The only thing I'm really worried about now
06:44Is a really bad night of mosquitoes
06:45I think it's better for Logan and I
06:47Just to eat this up now
06:48Could invite problems with bears
06:49We don't usually have any issues with bears
06:51Or any trouble
06:52But we've got a lot of fish smells
06:53Around the campsite
06:56Mmm
06:58Wow, that's good
07:00Nice job
07:01My instincts always tell me
07:03To immediately gather
07:04As much information
07:05About my situation as possible
07:07It's not the same for Logan
07:08He hasn't honed
07:10Any survival instincts
07:11That he can draw upon yet
07:12So I need him to pay attention
07:14To what knowledge
07:15I'm looking to gather
07:16We need to do
07:17Zone of assessment number two
07:18What are we carrying with us?
07:21Right
07:23A hatchet
07:26Hand saw
07:27One of these travel thermoses
07:29Unfortunately it's all rubber
07:30On the outside
07:31That's why I'm a big fan
07:32Of bringing metal cups
07:35You can boil in them
07:36We've each got a seat pillow
07:38From the boat
07:39Full set of fishing tackle
07:41Which is great
07:42And there's a few things in there
07:43I think we've got
07:44We can use
07:44There's some light sticks, right?
07:46Yep
07:46There was the bug spray that you had
07:50And then that's it
07:51There's nothing left
07:52There's no bars to ration out
07:55There's no sandwiches to cut up
07:56There's no cookies to give out
07:57In order to count
07:58This was our day pack
07:59We had some paper towels
08:03Logan's got a cup too
08:04There's your cup by the way
08:05And unfortunately
08:06It's also a plastic
08:08Huge bonus
08:09We've each got rain gear
08:10And rubber boots
08:11Brought all that stuff with us
08:12Again just expecting a day
08:14Out not knowing
08:15What we're going to get weather
08:16Of
08:16So I think that's about it
08:17Finding ripe fruits
08:19Or berries
08:20Or any kind of plants
08:21Is completely dependent
08:22Upon the luck
08:22Of the timing
08:23In a survival ordeal
08:24I often hear the comment
08:26Why didn't you just
08:27Gather berries
08:28But most wild berries
08:29Are only ready
08:30For two weeks
08:31Out of the year
08:32Fortunately for Logan and I
08:33We're here
08:34At just the right time
08:35In the middle
08:36Of black bear territory
08:37With a million ripe berries
08:38That's incredible
08:40Because this is enough
08:41To actually make a difference
08:42For us, you know
08:42It's not just a quick munch
08:44And we can travel
08:45Tomorrow with them
08:46Let's go
08:46Let's do this
08:48Right time of year
08:49To get lost
08:53Yeah, that's for sure
08:55I can tell you how often
08:56I'm in a place
08:58And I get told about
08:59How great the berries are
09:01Or the fishing is
09:02Or whatever
09:03And then it's like
09:03Well, it's just
09:04The wrong time of year
09:06This is one of those
09:06Situations where
09:07The energy spent
09:11Gathering food
09:12Is equaled by the amount
09:14Of food that we can gather
09:15To be able to sit
09:16In a spot like this
09:17And have literally
09:19Thousands of blueberries
09:21At our fingertips
09:23Is a huge bonus
09:24And it'll serve
09:25Logan and I really well
09:26Putting the odds
09:27In our favor
09:28By gathering all these berries
09:29Right now
09:30While we're stuck here
09:31It's a good thing to do
09:34Logan is experiencing
09:35A survival situation
09:36That so far
09:37Consists of good luck
09:38And familiarity
09:39He's at a campsite
09:41We've caught fish
09:42The weather is nice
09:43We have blueberries
09:44If he grows complacent
09:46As a result
09:47He won't be of any help
09:48To me
09:48In affecting better survival
09:50When we really need it
09:51It's adversity
09:53That has taught me
09:54My greatest survival lessons
09:55But how far am I willing to go
09:57To get Logan
09:58To experience adversity
09:59It's the toughest question
10:00Any parent has to answer
10:12It's our second day
10:13Surviving in Canada's far north
10:15And with our boat motor disabled
10:16We're challenged with the task
10:18Of paddling many miles
10:19To reach a cabin
10:20At the other end of the lake
10:21We've caught fish
10:23Picked berries
10:24And the weather
10:24Is in our favor
10:25For now
10:29The only option we have
10:30Is to paddle
10:31This big tin boat
10:33And paddle it
10:34Actually
10:35Against the wind
10:36Unfortunately
10:36You know
10:37This is
10:38That's the way it happens
10:41Probably
10:41To the tune
10:42Of a thousand stories
10:43Of summer
10:45Fishermen break down
10:47Their boats break down
10:47And you find yourself paddling
10:49In this case
10:50We know
10:51The lake's empty
10:52We also know
10:53There's other cabins
10:54That we might be able
10:56To get to along the way
10:57So
10:57Logan's just
10:59Lifted up the motor
11:00So it's out of the water
11:02And
11:04We're going to get paddling
11:07Pushing a tin fishing boat
11:08Forward with a pair
11:09Of canoe paddles
11:10Is not easy
11:10It drives home
11:11The importance
11:12Of every fishing boat
11:13Having proper oars
11:14Instead of paddles
11:15For want of a good set of oars
11:17People have died
11:19There's no reason
11:20Why we can't fish
11:21Along the way
11:22I mean
11:23We've got to eat
11:24We'll get the wind
11:25With us for now
11:26That's good
11:31You know
11:31If the wind really picks up
11:32We could use the tarp
11:33For a sail
11:34That's true
11:35The tin boat
11:36Represents a way out
11:37The time out on the lake
11:38Represents relief
11:40From mosquitoes
11:40And a chance
11:41At catching food
11:42And it would seem
11:43That the survival winds
11:44Of fortune
11:45Are blowing in our direction
11:47We've got a tailwind
11:49Why don't we put the tarp up
11:51Okay
11:54Exactly
11:56This works
12:02It's the work
12:02It's going in the right direction
12:06There we go
12:07There we go
12:09Oh
12:12Yeah
12:15That's easier than paddling
12:16Let's just keep this up
12:17And see how far it takes us
12:27Whoa
12:30Whoa
12:31Mine's ready
12:31Yep
12:35Whoa
12:37I don't know why
12:38A lot of people
12:39Just seem to be panicky
12:40About drinking water
12:43Out of northern lakes
12:46I don't think
12:47I don't think you can get water
12:48Much cleaner than this
12:49We've got to stay hydrated
12:50No matter what
12:50And the old trick
12:52For not feeling hungry
12:54Is to
12:55Keep drinking as much water
12:56As possible
12:59As quickly as our tailwind
13:00Came up
13:01It stops
13:01And we're back to paddling
13:03The fact that the wind
13:04Is at our backs
13:05Is another stroke of luck
13:06Unfortunately
13:07We're paddling away
13:08From a massive field
13:09Of berries
13:10Earlier this morning though
13:12While Logan slept at sunrise
13:13Having struggled
13:14Through the night
13:15I got busy
13:16In the berry patch
13:17Proving again
13:18That proactive survival
13:19Is the only survival
13:24Surprise for you this morning
13:26Check it out
13:30Awesome
13:33I'm hoping that Logan
13:34Is understanding now
13:36How important it is
13:37In a survival situation
13:38To never be passive
13:42Logan and I know
13:42We can catch some fish
13:43So we can eat
13:44It gives us food
13:45We've got plenty of water
13:46Other than getting
13:47A good shelter set up
13:48What more do we need
13:49The reality is
13:50We need to travel
13:51We need to get ourselves
13:51Out of here
13:52And so it becomes a decision
13:54Do you stop and fish?
13:55Do you spend a lot of time fishing?
13:57It's an important decision to make
13:58Because you spend a lot of calories
14:00Motoring all the time
14:02And if it's a long, long way
14:05Then you've got to temper it
14:06With getting some food energy
14:08Along the way
14:10We're just going to
14:11Take a bit of time
14:12To see if we can catch something
14:13If not
14:15We're back to paddling
14:23Okay
14:24We got one
14:25Fish on
14:25Fish on
14:26Fish on
14:30Yes
14:30All right
14:31Just a little baby pike
14:33Just a little guy
14:35Well we've got one
14:36As my dad would say
14:37We wouldn't have starved
14:40And we won't starve tonight
14:44Back to paddling
14:46It's fishing for survival now
14:48Everything is kept
14:49You never know
14:51When the good luck will end
14:52And after many hours of paddling
14:54Our attention turns to sheltering
14:56For the night
14:56And Logan
14:57Is frustrating me
14:58By letting me make all the decisions
15:01See this clearing up here
15:04Let's pull into it
15:06And see
15:07See if it gives us any good locations
15:09To set up a shelter
15:11Logan's usual calm
15:12And passive personality
15:13Leaves him content
15:14With me picking out a spot
15:16But I need him to think
15:17Because two minds
15:18Are better than one
15:19And two days without much food
15:21Takes its toll
15:22On my own ability
15:23To think clearly
15:25Well I know
15:25Logan's counting on me
15:26To make a good decision here
15:28And just
15:29Take a shelter
15:30Instead of saying
15:31Well you go for it
15:32Wherever I want to do it
15:33But all of a sudden
15:34I feel pressure
15:35Because
15:37He's got to make it
15:38Through the night too
15:38If I don't
15:39Come up with an answer soon
15:42The night's going to be upon us
15:44Can we shelter here
15:46Or not
15:48That's the question
15:49Maybe this is why
15:50I've always survived alone
15:51I don't like the added pressure
15:52Of thinking for Logan's benefit
15:54Out here as well as mine
15:55I need his help
15:56And I don't feel like I have it
15:57Now that we stop
15:58I think it's a day of paddling
15:59It's going to wear me out a bit
16:03Now I'm starting to feel
16:04The lack of food
16:08I don't want to let Logan down
16:09I've got to figure this out
16:20As Logan and I search out a place
16:21To shelter for the night
16:23I come up with an idea
16:24That I've never tried before
16:29I just had what might be a stupid idea
16:31I don't know
16:32Or it might be an awesome idea
16:35There's a ton of spruce trees here
16:37Easily gathered
16:39Cut down
16:40Small trees
16:41Right
16:41And I was looking at the boat
16:43And I was thinking
16:43What if
16:43What if
16:44We make two beds
16:45If you come and look at the boat
16:47Put two beds
16:48Two spaces
16:49Triangle
16:50On one end
16:51Down at the back end
16:52Triangle on the front end
16:52A pole across
16:53We've got the rope
16:55We can tie it all up
16:55So it's secure
16:57Drape the tarp over top of that
16:59We basically have a mobile tent
17:00At that point
17:02That's going to be
17:02A very uncomfortable sleep
17:04I don't
17:04I don't think it will be
17:05Okay
17:06Well think about this
17:07Let's say we move to a new location tomorrow
17:10We're going to have to take it down
17:11Put it in the boat
17:12Like I'm just thinking about that
17:13I mean all we would have to do
17:14Every night
17:15Is spend a concentrated hour
17:16Getting bows
17:17And five poles
17:18And we could set it up
17:19Every single night
17:20And we would be able to sleep
17:21In the boat
17:22Anchor the boat
17:23In a protected little cove
17:24Instead of coming in on shore
17:25The only thing we can't have
17:27Is a fire
17:27But we can have the fire
17:28Right on shore
17:29If it was just me
17:30I'd definitely not do that
17:31You know what
17:31We'll put one bed down
17:33And you try it out
17:33Lie on it
17:34And if you think like
17:35Oh man
17:35I could sleep like this
17:36Great
17:36You know
17:37Because it's
17:38I
17:38From my experience
17:39It's not going to be
17:40That much more comfortable
17:41Up on the land
17:44Logan clearly doesn't like the idea
17:46Or at least doesn't think
17:47It'll work
17:48But I have to let my own experience
17:50Take the lead role here
17:52A bow bed
17:52Is just a bow bed
17:57And it can be a lot of work
17:59To build up on the land
18:00The ground here is damp
18:02But the tin boat is solid and dry
18:04So long as we can keep it that way
18:06Working together can be more efficient
18:08At completing the task
18:11One of us gathers
18:12While the other builds
18:15Put your feet up in here
18:16Every once in a while
18:16Stretch out legs
18:18But I think this can work
18:19Yeah, try it out
18:20Tell me what you think
18:29It's not that bad
18:30I'm going to work on the tarpon
18:32Get that part ready
18:33Because I'm seeing clouds come over now
18:36And just like that
18:37How fast we work
18:38Becomes imperative
18:39So we can be prepared
18:40For the approaching storm
18:41In the western sky
18:43In survival
18:44You're always either
18:45Dealing with weather
18:46Or preparing for it
18:47Alright
18:49Use some more of this
18:52Bug spray again
18:57Oh, look at that
18:59That's crazy
19:01Rock and roll
19:02I got a fish to clean
19:05Well, it's just a little guy
19:08But it's food
19:09There's no reason why
19:10Logan can't try to increase
19:11Our food bounty
19:14Here we go
19:17Toss them in the frying pan
19:18Toss them in the frying pan
19:26Okay, alright
19:27Whoa, whoa
19:27Don't let them jump
19:28Don't let them jump
19:29Keep coming
19:30Keep coming
19:31Keep coming
19:32There we go
19:32Oh, yeah
19:37Sun's going down
19:39And I'm just going
19:40To hope that
19:41Weather holds out
19:41Throughout the night
19:43I don't know
19:44I kind of like
19:44My new contraption there
19:46I think it looks pretty cool
19:54Our hopes for a clear night sky
19:56Are quickly passing
19:57As the clouds gather
19:58In the west
19:58And the wind begins
20:00To pick up
20:01It's just giving us
20:02Enough time
20:02To eat our catch
20:07Mmm
20:09I'm getting fresher than that
20:12Oh, that's awesome
20:13And no bones
20:15That doesn't look friendly
20:18Coming in
20:23We hold still now
20:25And wait
20:25To see if this shelter
20:27Was a good idea
20:28Or not
20:32This will have to do
20:33Nah, it's definitely
20:36Gonna be rain coming in
20:38I'll be surprised
20:39If we don't get hit by that
20:41Within moments of saying this
20:43The wind picks up
20:44With an unforgiving speed
20:45And begins to blow our fire
20:47Into the forest
20:48Forcing me to jump to action
20:49While Logan holds down the shelter
20:53It's, uh
20:54Just starting to rain now
20:56And the wind's picking up
21:01Oh, s***
21:02That's one of it
21:03No worries
21:04Don't panic
21:09Hold on to that time, buddy
21:10Hold on to it
21:12Right there
21:14Get this fire out
21:22Go in slow
21:22Careful
21:23And knock it down
21:24We're screwed
21:29Oh, this is a bad idea
21:37This is full time
21:56Are you dry?
21:57Yep
21:58Okay, so you're staying dry
21:59Yep
22:00Alright, you got your rain gear on
22:01Well, I'll just cap on
22:20I don't think we're sleeping much
22:33Well, it could be worse
22:37It could be raining
22:58Okay, it's not one of my best ideas
23:24You know what?
23:26That sky at night
23:27Sailor's delight
23:29There's a red sky over there
23:30That might be it
23:36With the worst of the storm past
23:38It's a good idea to take advantage
23:40Of the lull in the wind
23:41And build up our shelter
23:42So we can at least try to sleep
23:44Through the night
23:54Night, buddy
24:12This is how we got through the night
24:16Cold and uncomfortable
24:17I don't have to do another night like that
24:19This was not the best idea
24:39What's your plan, Logan?
24:40You're going to try and sleep a little longer?
24:42Want to leave you sleeping?
24:46The tarp's ripped bad
24:53Logan's not sleeping in the nights very well
24:55So I've got to cut him some slack
24:58And let him sleep through the morning
25:05People get so worried about giardia
25:09Beaver fever
25:10That's a misnomer
25:11And giardia is transferred by fecal matter
25:14And it's not just beavers
25:16It's all kinds of animals that will transfer
25:18With giardia
25:20You're really not going to feel the pain
25:22Until probably the problems
25:23Until about seven days later
25:25And then if you're back in civilization
25:27It's just a couple of pills
25:28And you're done with it
25:30But dehydration
25:32Can knock you down in three days
25:33So this is a nice big lake
25:35I have no issues drinking the water
25:37Straight from the shoreline here
25:42The lack of a normal supply of food
25:44Combined with minimal sleep
25:45Is no doubt contributing
25:47To Logan's general sluggishness
25:49And lethargic state
25:51But I've got to keep us moving
25:59What's that?
26:00Yep
26:15It's pretty clear that the weather
26:16Is giving us both some forgiveness here
26:19We've got lots of time
26:21To deal with things
26:22But yesterday we got caught
26:23So tonight I prefer to
26:26Get off the water early
26:28And again we're so fortunate
26:30To have the wind at our back
26:32And we can just sort of drift
26:33With this wind
26:34And Logan can fish
26:37He has more luck than I do anyway
26:40Fishing just takes on
26:41Such a whole different meaning
26:44When you have to catch fish
26:46To survive
26:51And so far nothing
26:56Today we'll start early
26:58To try and find a good shelter location
27:02I'm not trying to be picky or anything
27:04I'm just trying to find us a decent place
27:05To set up a shelter
27:06And be protected from storms
27:10You'd also have some wind
27:12Keep the bugs down
27:13Bugs are pretty bad last night
27:16And we're striking out here
27:21There's no flat ground
27:25Fortunately
27:28Because there's so much daylight
27:30You know
27:32I can afford to be a little picky
27:36I also don't want to leave it so late
27:38We run out of time
27:43Miles later
27:43A beach that looks great at first
27:45Offers up no better shelter
27:48Sand looks really nice
27:50But right in behind
27:51In here
27:52This is just all spruce bog
27:54If that wind dies down
27:57When it gets dark
27:58If there are mosquitoes
27:59This is where they're going to be
28:03Anyone who has ever canoe camped
28:05Knows how difficult it can be
28:07Just to find one small spot
28:09To pull up on
28:09Within many miles of shoreline
28:12This is why people have tended to congregate
28:14In the same areas on shorelines
28:16For thousands of years
28:18We go to
28:19And we build
28:20Where it makes sense to do so
28:22At least along the way
28:23Logan and I can still try for food
28:25It's a walleye
28:27It's a walleye
28:27Bring him in
28:28Bring him in
28:28Bring him in
28:29Come on
28:30Come on
28:30Bring him in
28:31Bring him in
28:31Yeah
28:32That's dinner
28:38Put him in water
28:39Keep him fresh
28:43All right
28:44So there we go
28:45That's what we've been trying to do
28:47We've just been drifting
28:48We're looking at a place
28:49To set up our shelter
28:50Sort of going along the shoreline
28:52Just really slow
28:53We're paddling
28:53There's no wind here today
28:55So it's like
28:55Kind of being stuck
28:56In the freshwater doldrums
28:58And there we go
28:59Logan just caught us dinner perfectly
29:01Nice job buddy
29:02Thanks
29:02So we have something to eat again tonight
29:04It's been hours of paddling
29:06With our fishing lines
29:07Trolling in the water
29:08Without a single hit from a fish
29:09And with no wind
29:10To push us forward either
29:11So this fish is a huge boost
29:13To our morale
29:15But we're still plagued
29:16With the search for a decent spot
29:17To pull ashore
29:18And spend the night
29:19What do you want to put in
29:21There or over by that stick
29:23Over by that stick
29:24Okay
29:31I'm still alive
29:32Still very much alive
29:35Remember to talk to camera
29:36And good luck
29:36Don't forget your cameras
29:37Yeah
29:41Okay
29:42So
29:44Since we decided on staying
29:46Just out in the open tonight
29:47I have to make us a nice bed
29:50I figure that it's not going to rain
29:52Because beautiful blue sky right now
29:55So if it does
29:57We've got the tarp nearby
29:59So I can grab that quickly
30:01If I need to
30:01In the meantime
30:02I've got to get all these
30:03Spruce boughs up
30:04And start weaving them
30:06Into a bed
30:07I'm just kind of
30:08Shoving them into the dirt here
30:10Trying to make it
30:11As flat
30:12Low as possible
30:14Get rid of some of these rocks
30:16I'm just trying to weave
30:17All of these
30:18Spruce boughs in together
30:20It's the best way
30:21To keep the heat in
30:24And make it nice and comfy
30:26We've been able to film
30:27Logan catching
30:28A walleye
30:29Which is great
30:30So that gave us dinner
30:32But then
30:34I decided to match him
30:38Two
30:39Perfect walleye
30:42I need my sleep
30:43And I haven't been getting it
30:44So
30:46I'm hoping
30:47This is going to be a better idea
30:49Than sleeping in a tin can
30:52Unfortunately
30:53I'm not just making this bed for me
30:55My dad has to fit on it too
30:56Which means that
30:58I have to listen to him
30:58Snore all night
31:00Which really sucks
31:02How's it going?
31:03Good
31:04Well that's looking comfortable
31:06I've got the fish all cleaned up
31:07And ready to go
31:08Awesome
31:08So I'm going to clear a little space over there
31:10And get a fire going
31:13What we have in our favor
31:14What we have in our favor is the good weather
31:15Without it
31:16This would be a much different story
31:26Logan's pretty much hung up on fishing
31:29So I'm going to be the one to get the fire going again tonight
31:32And unfortunately now I'm all out of that bug spray
31:39That was kind of the magic ingredient
31:40But I still have paper towel here
31:43I'm going to do a sort of rip it up in the middle here
31:47Get it down in there
31:49And get it so the fluffy part
31:51The part that I just ripped up
31:52Will catch a spark
31:53I want to get cooking that fish
31:56There we go
31:57There we go
31:57There we go
31:58All it took
31:58That's all it took
32:00It just took a spark
32:02And a paper towel
32:03And with the paper towel roughed up
32:06And made fluffy
32:08I got my flame
32:11Beautiful
32:19It'd be good if tomorrow
32:21We pulled out the maps
32:23Try and figure out where we are
32:25In relation to any outpost camps or cabins
32:27Or anything like that
32:27That's probably a really good idea
32:29And see if we can make it to one
32:30Because if we get hit with more storms again
32:34And it's not going to be so pleasant
32:48Loons have been singing up a storm
32:51Just dancing and playing and calling
32:54Logan's just settling in for the night
32:57I've been able to bring
32:59Loons into me before
33:00By using my harmonica
33:29We'll make it through this night
33:30Clear of any rain
33:31So it's an easy sleep under the stars
33:34But now
33:35Onwards we go
33:36As the tedium of paddling must continue
33:38Sitting still won't do us any good
33:41No matter how beautiful
33:42The area actually is
33:54I'm starting to stink
33:57I'm starting to stink
33:58You always stink
33:59Not as bad as your feet, aren't you?
34:03How far are we paddling?
34:05Forever
34:07We're still many miles of paddling
34:09Until we may come upon one of the cabins on the lake
34:11That we can take advantage of
34:13Off camera
34:14Logan and I become a bit testy with each other
34:16Brought about no doubt by the tedium
34:18This reality that boredom and tedium
34:21Can drive you nuts in a survival ordeal
34:23Is often overlooked
34:24Yet it can be very dangerous
34:25If you're alone
34:27You can become depressed and lethargic
34:28If you're not
34:29You can become annoyed and touchy
34:31Which is why proactivity
34:33Lifts the spirits during survival
34:35So here's the option
34:37It's either
34:38About another
34:41Eight mile paddle
34:43Or
34:43About three quarters of a mile
34:46Across land
34:48Let's take the land
34:50We'll be leaving the boat, right?
34:52Now
34:52The reason we're going across land
34:54Is because there should be a cabin
34:55Down on that other side
34:58Yeah
34:59Let's take the rest of that
35:01Leave the boat
35:02Okay
35:02Let's find a place to land
35:09This move, however, is risky
35:11It can be dangerous to travel across
35:13Even as little as a few hundred yards
35:15But survival
35:16Is always about calculated risks
35:19To make your situation better
35:20Survival is about moving forward
35:23It's about going home
35:26How about right here?
35:27Sure
35:35Okay
35:35All we have to do
35:38Is go in a straight line here
35:40Just keep the sun
35:41In one spot on your forehead
35:44And then we'll try
35:44And sort of stay straight
35:45As we go through
35:46Okay
35:47It's the best way
35:47Without a compass to do this
35:48All we have to do
35:49Is go up and over land
35:52Three quarters of a mile
35:53Might not seem like
35:54Very long ways
35:55But through the bush
35:56It is
35:58Don't underestimate
35:59How dangerous this decision is
36:01All that has to happen
36:02Is to get turned around
36:04In the thick bush
36:05And then what's hoped
36:06To become a short hike
36:07Becomes a nightmare
36:13Just watch your footing too
36:15Yeah
36:16Don't want any snapped ankles
36:17Out here
36:18One wrong turn
36:19One branch in the eye
36:21And everything changes
36:24Doesn't help when the clouds
36:26Come in and obscure the sun
36:27No
36:28It starts raining
36:30It's not going to be good
36:30Let's just keep going
36:36Now the calories
36:37Are burning up fast
36:39This is an exhaustive undertaking
36:42Fraught with the potential
36:43For accidents
36:44And missteps
36:44It would have been safer
36:46To simply keep paddling
36:47But the tediousness of that
36:49Was taking its toll
36:50And it was time
36:51To make a change
36:52Let's just hope
36:53It was the right change to make
36:55Because right about now
36:57It feels like the forest
36:58Is closing in on us
36:59An all too familiar feeling
37:01In a survival ordeal
37:03Out here
37:04It's not overly dramatic
37:06To point out
37:06That one wrong turn
37:08Could put us somewhere
37:09Where we will never be seen again
37:21You know what
37:22It looks like it's
37:25Thinning out up ahead
37:26If that's the case
37:28You may be at the lake
37:34Ow!
37:53Hey, you know what?
37:54I see water
37:57We're at the other side
38:17There's nothing on this side
38:22Shoot
38:24See, we know there's a cabin
38:26On this side
38:26Of the point we just watched
38:28All the way across
38:30Just don't know if we've hit
38:32To the left
38:32Or to the right
38:33What I did try to do
38:34Was air us on the side
38:37Of being too far
38:38To one direction
38:38It's an old trick
38:39With compass
38:40That you can do as well
38:42Basically
38:43You know you want to go
38:44On a straight line
38:44But instead
38:45You on purpose
38:45Go too far to the left
38:46So when you hit the shore
38:48You look to the right
38:49And that's where your
38:50Thing should be
38:50And we tried that
38:51For this
38:52But I definitely
38:53Don't see anything
38:54To the left
38:59Hey, there it is
39:05Salvation
39:15So this has really paid off
39:18One thing I can almost guarantee
39:20Is that the cabin
39:21Will not be locked
39:23Nobody locks cabins
39:24In the north, ever
39:26That's just mean
39:35Okay
39:36This is huge for Logan and I
39:38So I don't care
39:39What's inside that cabin
39:41It's just going to be good
39:41To get up in there
39:42For tonight
39:43Wow
39:45Huge, huge
39:46Huge bonus
39:48Incredible
39:49Do you know what
39:51This is the way of the north
39:53Little trapper's cabins
39:55And in this case
39:55This is a fishing lodge
39:57You can see the doors
39:58Just left open
40:04So it looks like
40:04They've been taking care
40:05Of the place
40:06Yeah, it looks nice
40:08We stay here
40:08Without a signal fire tomorrow
40:11And we wait for plane rescue
40:16So the one thing
40:17We did actually bring with us
40:18From the boat as well
40:20Was the saw
40:23So it just fit nicely
40:24In the day pack
40:25So I thought I'd bring it along
40:26So that's going to help me
40:27To take down this tree
40:28A lot easier
40:28Than using my knife
40:33We've decided to build
40:34What I would consider
40:35To be a classic signal fire
40:37With three green trees
40:39More than anything
40:40I simply want Logan
40:42To learn this process
40:43To grasp the concept
40:44Of a fast lighting
40:46And thick smoking fire
40:47To be used for rescue
40:53That should hopefully be enough
40:55To get a nice good
40:57Signal fire going
40:58And get out of here
41:04I'm going to weave these
41:06Back in here
41:07Make a splash more
41:10We've shoved birch bark
41:11And even rubber and plastic
41:12From the camp
41:13Inside the branches
41:14To help make the smoke thick
41:16It's not very environmentally conscious
41:18But this is about survival
41:20It looks good
41:22There we go
41:23Signal fire ready to go
41:31As first the night
41:33Spent this time in comfort
41:34And then the morning passes
41:36We'll sit and wait
41:38For the sound of a plane
41:40In the far distance
41:46You hear that?
41:49Yeah
41:51Let's go
41:57Let's go
41:58Okay wait till we see him
41:59Don't light it yet
42:00Just because we hear him
42:02Doesn't mean anything
42:02At this point
42:04Okay here he is
42:05Way over there
42:06Way over there
42:09Okay light it
42:09Light it
42:10Light it
42:14Hopefully it'll do its thing
42:16It's coming right this way
42:17He's got to see it
42:19This is never a guarantee
42:21Of course this pilot
42:22Knew to look for us
42:23But often the smoke
42:24From a rescue fire
42:25Can appear to be nothing more
42:27Than a wisp of swamp steam
42:28And not smoke at all
42:30It takes much training
42:31For searchers to become good
42:33At spotting lost victims
42:34In inaccessible areas
42:35And remote forests
42:36And there are other camps
42:38In the area
42:38So there's no guarantee
42:40That this is the one
42:41That we made our way to
42:56That's him letting us know
42:57That he's here
42:58He's coming
42:59When they fly that low
43:00Like that
43:01He's letting us know
43:01He's seen us
43:03Even though Logan and I
43:05Put ourselves in this situation
43:06And even though Logan
43:08Has the advantage
43:08Of having me
43:09His father
43:10With him
43:11To take the lead role
43:12And guide him
43:13Through difficult circumstances
43:14I know
43:15That he would still feel
43:17The relief in this moment
43:18As the plane touches down
43:19Because it'll take him
43:21Back home
43:21Back to safety
43:22Back to all the comforts
43:24And trappings
43:25Of civilized living
43:25Far removed from the reality
43:27Of being lost in the woods
43:29Far from the reality
43:31Of survival
