Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni sworn in for seventh straight term
Transcript
00:08Gun salutes ran out as Museveni took the oath of office before dignitaries, military officials and thousands of supporters gathered
00:18in Kampala.
00:19At 81, Museveni is one of Africa's longest serving leaders, extending a presidency that began in 1986.
00:26The ceremony marks the start of another five years in office for a leader who has shaped Uganda's politics for
00:34nearly four decades.
00:35Regional leaders were among the guests, reflecting Uganda's growing role in diplomacy and security across East and Central Africa.
00:44In his acceptance pitch, Museveni said his government would prioritize industrial growth and modern farming.
00:51In Uganda here, we are always talking about the importance of value addition that I've just mentioned here.
01:00With the presence of so many African brothers and sisters and friends from outside Africa,
01:08I cannot fail to point out the strategic mistakes many of the African ruling elites have been making for the
01:18last 70 years,
01:19ever since the independence of Sudan Khartoum in 1955.
01:24This is the mistake of exporting unprocessed or sem-processed raw materials of minerals, agricultural products, etc., to foreign countries.
01:39Regional peace and security also featured prominently in Museveni's agenda.
01:44Ugandan troops remain involved in operations against the Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia and are also deployed in Eastern DR
01:52Congo and South Sudan under regional security arrangements.
01:56But back home, some Ugandans say the government must now focus more on jobs, corruption and the rising cost of
02:04living.
02:04We, the youths, we lack jobs. At least we should create other job opportunities for some of us. Others, we
02:12are graduates, but we don't have jobs.
02:17We have leaders who are corrupt. They get their people of their own interest who don't even have papers. They
02:23are not qualified.
02:25I would like the president to start with fighting corruption, especially in my district of Wakiso. In Wakiso, we are
02:33doing badly. The roads are terrible. The market has never been built, despite the district receiving funds.
02:40The opposition stayed away from the inauguration, insisting the election lacked credibility and calling for the release of political detainees.
02:50The next five years could be crucial for Uganda's economy at more than four decades under President Museveni.
02:57But many years say real progress will depend on cutting government waste and creating more jobs for young people.
03:04The government is hoping future oil revenues with production expected to begin later this year will help fuel economic growth.
03:12The international monetary fund projects Uganda's economy could expand by as much as 7.5% by the end of
03:212026.
