Transcript
00:00.
00:07Thousands gathered on Saturday at the General Lansana Conte Stadium in Guinea's capital Conakry
00:12to witness a historic moment for the West African country.
00:16General Mamadi Dumbuya officially sworn in as the country's new president,
00:20marking the end of a four-year military transition period.
00:23Several African leaders attended the ceremony.
00:26It was a memorable day for many of his supporters.
00:29We have a head of state who is determined to unite the sons and daughters of this nation
00:35around a single vision, to see a united Guinea, a prosperous Guinea,
00:40a Guinea that evolves with transparency and above all with social justice.
00:45We accept the president's offer of reconciliation and call on the Guinean people to work for our country's stability,
00:52accept the offer and seek Guinea's best interests.
00:56Guinea is our shared heritage.
00:59The December 28 vote was the first since Dumbuya deposed the then-president, Alpha Conde, in 2021.
01:07It came months after the country adopted a new constitution through a nationwide referendum.
01:13The constitution lifted restrictions on military leaders running for office
01:17and extended the presidential term from five to seven years, clearing the way for Dumbuya's candidacy.
01:23After taking the oath, Dumbuya reaffirmed his commitment to respect the constitution,
01:28pledging to govern with integrity, justice and responsibility.
01:32He also noted his mandate will include greater involvement of women and young people in the country's development.
01:39His supporters believe the country should get behind his program for government.
01:44In the coming years, we want to see our country become an emerging, prosperous and united nation.
01:50Thanks to God, Guinea will be so beautiful that it will be called the little Paris of West Africa.
01:56I congratulate President Mamadi Dumbuya. He truly deserves his honors.
02:02I have witnessed how the city has changed under his leadership.
02:05I know that one day we will be among the best in Africa.
02:08As the Guinean people, we must support President Mamadi for the next seven years
02:14because he has a vision, he has a program and he loves his country.
02:19Guinea is one of several countries in West and Central Africa to experience a military coup in the past six years.
02:26Oil promised a return to civilian rule as soon as conditions are deemed appropriate.
02:31Guinea represents, at least on paper, a complete transition following the election.
02:36Yet, with the coup leader propelled to power in a landslide, many critics will challenge this assertion.
