00:08Hi, I'm Tim and this is my pronunciation workshop. Here I'm going to show you how English is really spoken.
00:17Come on, let's go inside.
00:25Today I'm going to use two things to help me demonstrate a feature of English pronunciation.
00:33This is a bin and this is a bean. What's the connection?
00:45Well, I'm sure you know the past participle of the verb to be. Been, right?
00:53Well, we asked some people how long they had been in London.
00:58I've been in London 17 years.
01:02I have been in London 7 years.
01:04I've been in London for more than a year now.
01:07I've been in London every summer since I was 18.
01:10Now, they all used the word bean, but nobody actually said bean.
01:18Listen again. What word do you actually hear them say?
01:25I've been in London 17 years.
01:29I have been in London 7 years.
01:31I've been in London for more than a year now.
01:34I've been in London every summer since I was 18.
01:38In fluent everyday English, when the auxiliary been is not stressed, its pronunciation changes to been.
01:48I've been in London since 2015 becomes I've been in London since 2015.
01:56This is what's known as a weak form and it helps speech to flow more naturally and fluently.
02:02Here are some more examples.
02:05I've been working here for several years.
02:08How long have you been waiting?
02:10It's been years since I went to the cinema.
02:13What have you been up to since we last met?
02:15So, you've heard the examples and now it's your turn.
02:20You know the drill. Listen and repeat.
02:23I've been working here for several years.
02:28How long have you been waiting?
02:33It's been years since I went to the cinema.
02:37What have you been up to since we last met?

02:58I'll see you soon. Bye-bye!
03:01Now, what to do with this old bean?
03:05Of course, put it in the bin.
03:10Ow!
03:12I should have been more careful.
03:15Again?
03:21Do the big deal.
03:24There are lots of things here.
