00:07Hi, I'm Tim and this is my pronunciation workshop. Here I'm going to show you how English is really spoken.
00:17Come on, let's go inside.
00:25Are you a creature of habit? For example, do you have a routine in the mornings?
00:33Every morning I like to have a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit.
00:41This is what some people in London told us when we asked them what they do in the mornings.
00:48I always have some breakfast. I always go to the gym in the morning.
00:52I always drink a glass of warm water when I wake up.
00:55One thing that happens when we speak English fluently is that we sometimes add sounds between words to help link
01:02them together more smoothly and easily.
01:06Listen again. Can you hear another sound between the words I and always?
01:14I always have some breakfast. I always go to the gym in the morning. I always drink a glass of
01:19warm water when I wake up.
01:21Did you catch it? It's hardly there, but when one word ends in an I, E, A or OI sound
01:30and the next word begins in a vowel sound, we can smooth the link out by adding a small Y
01:38sound.
01:39I always becomes I always. This is sometimes called the linking Y, but be careful.
01:49Your mouth normally does this naturally as it changes shape between the sounds. You don't actually want to add a
01:57full Y sound.
01:59Here are some more examples.
02:01When I go on holiday, I just want to lie on the beach.
02:05The end of the film was brilliant.
02:08I ate the whole cake in one go.
02:11It was too high up for me to reach.
02:14Right. Now you've heard the examples and now it's your turn. You know the drill. Listen and repeat.
02:21When I go on holiday, I just want to lie on the beach.
02:30The end of the film was brilliant.
02:35I ate the whole cake in one go.
02:40It was too high up for me to reach.

02:56And that is about it from the pronunciation workshop for this week. I'll see you soon. Bye bye!
03:05Right. Now I've been looking forward to this biscuit.
03:10Actually, do you want to see a magic trick?
03:14Now you see it. Now you don't.
03:18What? No, it's a magic trick. Magic!
