00:08Hi, I'm Tim and this is my pronunciation workshop. Here I'm going to show you how English is really spoken.
00:17Come on, let's go inside.
00:26Wow, isn't the world an amazing place? Look how many countries there are. Well, at least 10. Do you like
00:38travelling? How many countries have you visited? Now, is there any particular place or country that you'd like to visit?
00:47This is what the people of London told us when we asked them that same question.
00:52I'd like to visit Iceland.
00:57I'd like to visit South America.
00:59I'd like to visit Spain and Greece.
01:02I'd love to go to Egypt.
01:04The contraction I'd ends in the sound D, doesn't it? Or does it?
01:12Listen again, can you fully hear the D?
01:16I'd like to visit Iceland.
01:21I'd like to visit South America.
01:23I'd like to visit Spain and Greece.
01:25I'd love to go to Egypt.
01:28We make the sounds of English in different ways using different parts of our mouths. There's a group of consonants
01:37called plosives, and if this sounds a bit like the word explosion, well, that's not a bad way of remembering
01:45it.
01:46Plosive sounds are made by suddenly releasing air that has been blocked by various parts of the mouth. The sound
01:54D is one of these plosives. The others are B, T, P, K and G.
02:03In fluent everyday speech, when one word ends in a plosive sound and the next begins in another consonant sound,
02:13we don't always hear the release of the plosive sound.
02:17I'd like to becomes I'd like to.
02:22This is called an unreleased stop, or if you want to get really technical, a stop with no audible release.
02:32Here are some more examples.
02:33How about a quick chat?
02:36You should thank her.
02:37It was a sad time in his life.
02:39Why don't you sit down?
02:42Right, so you've heard the examples and now it's your turn. You know the drill by now. Listen and repeat.
