00:00Hi there, this is the I sound, as in the words in, it and with.
00:13It's a vowel sound and its technical name is the near-close, near-front, unrounded vowel.
00:21Remember that the key's pronunciation is physical and the name tells us about how the sound is made physically.
00:29In this case, your tongue is close to the top and the front of your mouth.
00:36Unrounded refers to your lips, because they are stretched out as if you are smiling and not rounded.
00:43All vowels are made through the mouth and are voiced, so you need to vibrate your vocal cords to make
00:49the sound.
00:50It's similar to the E sound, but it's shorter. I, not E.
00:58To produce the sound, put your tongue close to the top and the front of your mouth,
01:03and then stretch out your lips and make a short I sound with your mouth closed.
01:10I, I, I.
01:13The I sound is normally spelled with the letter I, as in the words this and give.
01:24But it can also be spelled with the letter E, as in the words become and because.
01:34Like with all vowels in English, the spelling can be very inconsistent and you'll always find alternative and unusual spellings
01:41of the vowel sounds.
01:42It's one of the most difficult things in English, but you just have to learn it.
01:47Here are some words that start with the I sound.
01:52IF
01:55INTO
01:59INCLUDE
02:01ENOUGH
02:04Here are some words that have the I sound in the middle.
02:09WILL
02:10WHICH
02:12HIS
02:14THINK
02:17WILL
02:17WHICH
02:21This symbol is not often used at the end of words, because when words end with this sound, it's normally
02:29part of the diphthong OY or it's the extended vowel sound E.
02:37So that's it for the Ip sound but we have made additional videos on each of the groups
02:44of sounds, vowels, diphthongs, single consonants and consonant pairs as well as a video explaining
02:51the overall phonetic chart.
