00:00Hi, this is the ua sound, as in the words during, security, and poor.
00:17Ua is a diphthong sound, which means that it's a combination of two vowel sounds,
00:24which are pronounced within the same syllable.
00:27The ua sound is a combination of the u sound and the u sound, ua.
00:38Like vowels, the diphthongs are all made through the mouth, and they're voiced, which means
00:43that you will vibrate your vocal cords to make the sound.
00:47But unlike vowels and consonants, when you pronounce a diphthong sound, your mouth will
00:53change position and shape as you say the sound, because they combine two vowel sounds.
01:01So as you say the ua sound, your mouth will start on the position of the u and finish on
01:08the position of the u sound.
01:12So in this case, our mouth goes from being almost closed, with slightly rounded lips like
01:19we're going to kiss someone, to being more open and with a more relaxed mouth shape.
01:36One of the most difficult things about learning English is the spelling.
01:41This is because spelling in English is often not phonetic, especially with the vowels and
01:47diphthong sounds.
01:49You'll find the ua sound spelled in many different ways.
01:54But it's often spelled with the letters u, ou, or double o.
02:02There aren't many examples of this sound, because it's not a very common one.
02:06In fact, the three examples that we saw on the first slide are the most important ones you
02:11need to know.
02:13Here they are again.
02:28So that's it for the ua sound.
02:41We've also made videos on each of the phonetic sounds, which you can see by clicking on these

02:49We've also made videos on the groups of sounds, vowels, diphthongs, consonant pairs and single
02:56consonants, as well as a video explaining the overall phonetic chart.
