Duren didn't play in the final 17 of 18 minutes in game 5
Transcript
00:00I think it was also obvious his lack of reps with the offensive unit
00:05I think shows up.
00:07It looks like he at times doesn't know where he's supposed to be
00:11or what he is supposed to do.
00:12There were several times coming back down the court
00:15that he and Cade Cunningham had to have a discussion about,
00:18no, man, I need you to do this, or you've got to be there,
00:20and it's all a learning process for him,
00:22but he's not going to get there unless he gets more reps.
00:25The question that's going to be interesting for tomorrow
00:28is the starting lineup.
00:30Because of what J.B. did at the end of the game,
00:33no Duren in the fourth quarter in overtime.
00:35It was all Paul Reed time.
00:37Does Paul Reed get the start?
00:39Does Isaiah Stewart get the start?
00:41He's playing 10 minutes a game.
00:44Or are they going to go back to Jalen Duren in game six?
00:48Well, they might.
00:50Duren came back into the game with the Pistons
00:52with a 13-point lead midway through the second quarter.
00:57And with Duren on the bench by half,
01:03it was down to eight.
01:04And then with Duren starting the second half,
01:07Cleveland took the lead.
01:08And, you know, I understood the patience, okay,
01:13and why these decisions are hard.
01:14Because if you start thinking about,
01:16if you take away Duren and what Duren was
01:19and what Duren's capable of being,
01:21how close to an NBA championship contender are they?
01:24But Duren's, so they've stuck with him.
01:27But they don't, this is desperate now, man.
01:30They don't have time to keep waiting for him.
01:32No, you had a couple guys step up from game four to game five.
01:36Danis Jenkins, one of them, he had the 19 points,
01:38obviously only had two points in the other game.
01:40Asar Thompson, who had a miserable game in game four,
01:43had a pretty good game last night.
01:44Only scored six points.
01:46But he was all over the place.
01:47Seven rebounds, five assists, four steals, and three blocks.
01:52All while trying to contain, you know,
01:56various players with unethical standards.
01:582, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
02:00And then there is the officiating, which is a whole nother topic,
02:03but it's in the two categories of things we're discussing today,
02:07what the Pistons can't control and what they can't control.
02:10And what they can't control was the number one talking point
02:14on Get Up This Morning coming out of the highlight package.
02:17They talked about the officiating
02:19and how the Pistons were victims
02:23of some terrible, terrible calls last night.
02:27We go to Joe, you're next on 97.1.
02:29Hello, Joe.
02:31Hey, guys.
02:32I don't need to ask how y'all are doing.
02:34I already know.
02:35You know, as somebody that's watched all 94 games of the season so far,
02:40I saw Jalen Duren develop.
02:42We've all seen him develop into this all-NBA talent,
02:45second or third team, whatever, all-star.
02:48And we've seen J.B. Biggerstaff ride with him,
02:50and he has said publicly after these games,
02:53I'm going to continue riding with him.
02:55He got up this far.
02:56He's been great.
02:57All this and that.
02:58Well, in the most important game in the last 18 years for this franchise,
03:04and even in the last 12 playoff games,
03:06he has continued to go with Jalen Duren.
03:08And you can understand to an extent he's 22 mentally with his ex-girlfriend in the last year.
03:14He can sort of excuse some of the things that has been going on.
03:17But I'm glad you guys just mentioned that we were up 15.
03:22Duren comes back.
03:23We go into halftime, up eight.
03:25He starts the third quarter.
03:27Again, same issue.
03:28We lose that lead.
03:29Cleveland takes the lead.
03:30And then for some reason,
03:31we wait until the fourth quarter to break out Paul Reed as if he's the secret weapon.
03:36And I think Gator nailed it.
03:38I think he nailed it.
03:40Paul Reed started to lack a little bit of the cohesiveness towards the overtime.
03:43Probably got a little bit gassed.
03:44He played 17 straight minutes of intense basketball.
03:47But my complaint goes beyond Jalen Duren.
03:50I think you've got to look at the head of the snake with J.B. Bickerstaff.
03:54Now, I texted my cousin in the middle of the New York Knicks series last year where we lost.
03:58Joe, we're short on time, so I want you to land the plane.
04:01Your point is?
04:02I got you.
04:02I got you.
04:03So my point is J.B. Bickerstaff is trying random lineups
04:07that have never played together throughout the entire regular season.
04:10Marcus Sass hasn't played since February, and you burn him for 16 minutes.
04:13And I do believe he deserves minutes over guys like a Karis LeVert or a Danis Jenkins at some point
04:17in time.
04:18With J.B. Bickerstaff, what is your goal here?
04:23Duncan was hurt.
04:25I think the Duncan Robinson injury does change things up a little bit.
04:28But as far as the rotation with the forwards, if you're playing Duren or Paul Reed or Isaiah Stewart,
04:36I think that's going to be an interesting one to look at for tomorrow night.
04:38I mean, they played three games against the Knicks, and Duren didn't play in any of them.
04:41So Paul Reed got plenty of run with the ones.
04:44And there's a lot of games where a lot of lineups get experimented with.
04:50I mean, I think right now he's got to figure out the riddle that is Jalen Duren.
04:55And probably it feels like he can't wait any longer.
04:59He can't wait around any longer for Duren to try and recapture his form.
05:03Matt is next in Highland.
05:04You're on 97.1.
05:05Hello, Matt.
05:06Hello, guys.
05:08Hey, so last night my son and I, we figured this atmosphere was going to be pretty live down there
05:13last night.
05:14And we'd get in for under $200 for a decent seat.
05:18That was concern number one.
05:19I'm like, why is this so cheap?
05:21I'm not a basketball guy.
05:23I do not know for the life of me after watching that game last night how people invest their time
05:28and money full time into watching what I watched last night.
05:33They would show replays on the screen, like real slow-mos and stop it.
05:38Harden wasn't even getting touched on these.
05:40He would drop to the floor after every shot.
05:44If you look at the fourth quarter, I'm pretty confident he hit the floor after every time he released the
05:51ball.
05:51It was unbelievable.
05:53Yeah, if there was somebody guarding him, he would.
05:56If, obviously, uncontested, he'd just let the shot go.
05:58But, yeah, every time he's contested, he's going to the deck.
06:02Every time.
06:03And, Gator, I don't want to sit here and pull the, oh, I watched Charles Oakley and Bill Lamb beer
06:09card.
06:10But, I mean.
06:11Cheap shot, Charlie.
06:12I mean, seriously, this is a different sport.
06:15It's not even the same thing.
06:17No, it is different.
06:19In the first quarter, when I think it was Thompson and Tyson got tangled up, and Tyson kind of pushed
06:25them, and everybody was like, oh, my gosh.
06:28I'm like, are you kidding me?
06:29They would throw two-hand fists in the lane, you know, back in my day.
06:35And it was, that was, that was how they played the game.
06:38It's a physical game.
06:39It's just not as physical as it was.
06:41And they certainly don't allow stuff to happen like they used to.
06:44And even the stuff that went on in the 80s, if you watch the games in the 70s, it's a
06:48whole different ball game.
06:48I mean, it just has gotten progressively less and less physical with what they allow.
06:55But it's still pretty, a very physical basketball game.
06:57When you get up there close and you watch it, I think you'd be amazed at how hard these guys
07:02are hitting each other.
07:02That being said, there is more foul baiting going on.
07:06There is more acting going on.
07:08There is more flopping going on now more than ever.
07:12Way more than ever.
07:13Oh, way too many guys are hitting the floor for no reason.
07:16Like seven-footers.
07:17Not like little guards.
07:19Wemenyama is a big flopper.
07:21Embiid, that guy is, he's one of the best, most skilled big men in the league.
07:25He falls down all the time.
07:26You'd think he would just, he couldn't walk to the mailbox without falling down.
07:30Wemenyama can cuss himself.
07:33Falling to the ground.
07:36248-539-9797.
07:38Eddie is next.
07:39What's up, Eddie?
07:41Hey, good morning, guys.
07:42Just another frustrated Pistons fan here.
07:45A couple of consistent themes.
07:47You guys have mentioned most of them already.
07:49You got Jalen Duren over here that's MIA.
07:51I can't believe what's happening with him.
07:54He's a completely different player.
07:56I don't want to give up on him, but there is no way you offer him a max contract.
08:00He's clearly showing that he's not Robin to Cade's Batman.
08:05But guys, he's not even Alfred the Butler, for crying out loud.
08:08Eddie, I want to find out if he's hurt.
08:10I really want to find out if he's hurt.
08:12Because that would explain a lot.
08:14That's fair.
08:28That's fair.
08:29And that's the Pistons' M.O.
08:31That can't happen.
08:32What do you mean by sometimes?
08:34I want to hear what you have to say.
08:35Sometimes the Cavs are going to the little.
08:36Give me a quick example.
08:38Well, the loose balls, they look like they got more energy.
08:41They look like they're more into the game.
08:44Whereas the Pistons, they look like they're just looking around to see, okay, who's going to help out Cade?
08:49I guess I don't agree with that.
08:51I mean, Cavs have some hustle points for sure.
08:54They get some hustle points.
08:56Yeah, I mean, Struis is annoying because he is one of these spastic guys, but he's very effective.
09:00And going six for eight from beyond the arc, those are killers.
09:05It's Carson Anderson, 97-1.
