00:04I'm Lynn Smith and welcome to the Bigfoot project. I always knew that my
00:12family's lands were special. These same thousand acres of land had been passed
00:17down from one generation to another for more than 200 years. My earliest memories
00:22as a child involved helping my brothers and father deliver food to handmade
00:26wooden boxes to help out the animals that roamed our lands during the harshest
00:30of winters when food was scarce and it was difficult for anything to survive.
00:35I never would have imagined these gestures to help feed the animals would
00:39one day lead to an event that would change my life forever. Looking back I
00:45had so many signs of their existence but thought they were like other animals
00:49just trying to survive the harsh winters. This would all change when I returned
00:54for my first summer break since starting college. While enjoying my time back at
00:59home I did my best to help around the farm. My father was still very active and we
01:03would ride out on four-wheelers to repair fencing, refill water tanks and check on
01:08the animals. One day my father wanted me to go night camping with him. As sunset I
01:14began hearing heavy footsteps roaming around the outskirts of our camp. My father
01:19didn't look surprised and from the look on his face I realized he knew exactly who
01:25or what was making all this fuss around our camp. He just looked at me without
01:30saying a word for as long as the heavy footsteps continued to round us. When the
01:35footsteps faded away he asked me, do you know what kind of heavy creature has
01:39footsteps like what we just heard? I thought for a minute but before I could
01:44respond, my father said, come on son. I think the sounds had triggered memories I
01:50had pushed aside as I grew older, long forgotten in my mind. Memories of when I
01:55would place food in the handmade wooden feeder boxes for the harsh winters. I
01:59remember hearing the same heavy footsteps behind the thick bushes near the feeder
02:03and an image came to my mind. It was that of a large figure laying on its
02:08stomach as it reached out from the thick brush to grab the food from the feeder. A
02:13hairy arm with a dark spot. I realized there was a memory unintentionally
02:18suppressed by the effects of everyday living with school, farm work, family and
02:23life in general. I looked at my father and he simply said, son what you heard
02:29today and what you saw when you were younger is a creature called by many names
02:33but I know them as Sasquatch. We didn't say much after that and just laid in our
02:38sleeping bags watching the stars in the heavens. For some reason, knowing this
02:43made me feel a bit uneasy for the first time in my life. I had read stories about
02:48the creatures just being myths of the indigenous people or tales by many who
02:53were imagining things or were trying to intentionally fool people. The following
02:58week after camping with my father, he asked me to go out to an area of our land
03:03near the mountains and see if the perimeter fencing needed repairs. I drove the
03:08four-wheeler out to the location, driving along the fence, stopping for small
03:12patches and repairs. I spent several hours working until it was getting close to
03:17sunset. I started heading back along the perimeter road and came to an area near
03:21the edge of the large forest that crossed our land. Suddenly, I lost control of my
03:26four-wheeler and when I looked at the tire, it had blown out and torn apart at the
03:30tread. I called my brother on my cell and let him know what happened so he could
03:35come and help me. I was about an hour away due to the bumpy, winding dirt roads
03:39on our land. I finished talking to my brother and hung up and I began to hear
03:44loud footsteps and crashing noises behind the tree line where I was stranded. The
03:49sudden racket surprised me and whatever it was in the tree line started growling.
03:53It sounded like a large group of animals and I felt as though something was
03:57watching me and being aggressive towards my presence. The creatures sounded as if they
04:03were getting closer and I began to worry. I pulled my rifle from the back of my
04:08four-wheeler just in case whatever was making these sounds decided to attack me.
04:13I decided it would be best that I put some distance between me and whatever was
04:17behind the tree line. The sun was nearly below the horizon as I started heading
04:22down the road towards the farm, hoping to meet my brother along the way. The
04:26animals kept growling and following me in the shadows of the trees as I made my way to a
04:31fork in the road. At the fork to the right led to the farm, but when I tried
04:35taking the right fork, stones and pieces of branches began to fall on the road,
04:40barely missing me, and the animals behind the tree line became more aggressive,
04:44growling more and making louder noises. When I looked toward the tree line, I could
04:49see shadows moving and eye shine as they pointed my flashlight toward the forest.
04:54Every time I tried to head to the right of the fork, the animals seemed to be very
04:58angry, so I headed left on the fork even though it was a longer distance back.
05:03The animals' anger and growls seemed to decrease, but I could still hear them in the tree line
05:08following me. I was scared even with my rifle locked and loaded.
05:13If I headed this way, my brother may miss seeing me and wouldn't know where to find me.
05:18I tried calling him, but I no longer had a cell signal.
05:22I walked at a fast clip for several minutes, and after passing a slight curve on the road,
05:26I saw a dark figure sitting on the road a little to the left.
05:30At first I thought it was a person trespassing on our land, or maybe lost.
05:35But as I came closer to the figure, I realized it was a large something.
05:40It looked like a man wearing one of those ghillie suits, but far larger than any man I've ever seen.
05:45I was shocked. It was what my father told me a Bigfoot looked like.
05:50It looked like the creature from my childhood memory at the feeder.
05:54I panicked and raised my rifle, but to my surprise, and in a heavy, calm voice, it said my name.
06:02I was dumbfounded as I looked closely at the creature in front of me,
06:05this hairy humanoid sitting in the middle of the road.
06:08Once again, it called out my name, but this time it said,
06:13Don't be afraid. I know who you are, and I know you have an idea of who I am.
06:19A wave of calmness flowed over me, and I was no longer scared.
06:23I felt as though he was familiar to me.
06:26The animals behind the tree line started to walk out from the shadows,
06:30and I saw it was several more of these creatures.
06:33They were small, young-looking ones, as well as older ones.
06:38Some seemed calm, others had a slight snarl on their faces.
06:42The younger ones seemed curious as they looked at me.
06:46Again, with his calm voice, the Bigfoot sitting in the middle of the road began to speak.
06:51I am called Nanook.
06:53I know you must be wondering how a creature such as me can speak your language.
06:58The reason I brought you here is to thank you.
07:01Your family has always been good to us.
07:04The food that you left to feed the other animals
07:06also helped us through the harshest of winters.
07:09I am grateful to you also.
07:11Your kindness has always been felt by my family.
07:14We would have starved if it was not for you.
07:18I stood there in awe of what I was seeing and hearing,
07:20speechless as he continued.
07:23We have been watching your race from our earliest encounters,
07:26generations of past,
07:27and although your kind lives in conflict with nature,
07:30we know that many of your kind are good.
07:33But we hide from the world because many will not understand our existence
07:36and may harm us.
07:39You are different, just like your father and his father before him.
07:42I can see the beauty in your heart.
07:46I finally snapped out of my haze and asked,
07:48how do you know how to speak our language?
07:51As I finished speaking, his face changed, his eyes became softer.
07:55It looked like he was smiling, and he said,
07:58we have known about your many different kinds,
08:01from the stories passed down to us.
08:03We first saw the first of you here,
08:05and learned your language and lived with nature with them.
08:08After generations, new creatures like you came,
08:11pale in the face, wearing stray skins,
08:13and began to appear in this land.
08:16Many of my kind didn't trust the new ones,
08:18and at times conflict occurred.
08:21But for some like you with good hearts,
08:23we got to know them and learn to speak like you.
08:27Sadly, we saw the bad in many of your kind's heart,
08:29and we retreated further into the forest.
08:33But your kind did not respect nature,
08:35and as the seasons changed,
08:37your kind grew in numbers
08:38and began to live everywhere in this great forest
08:41until it also began to become smaller.
08:44My kind cried,
08:45but even so,
08:46sometimes we would see the ones with gentle hearts like you,
08:49and hope that one day your kind
08:51would eventually unite with nature.
08:54I've been around,
08:55and I've had many children as you see around you,
08:57but I fear my time will soon be at an end.
09:02I listened intently,
09:03and when he paused,
09:04I asked him why did he choose to speak to me.
09:07He asked me to come closer,
09:08and I hesitated for a second,
09:10but in my heart,
09:11I knew I had nothing to fear.
09:13I walked very close to him,
09:15and even sitting down at his feet.
09:17His head was over two feet above mine.
09:20He was so wide and hairy
09:22that I could not see behind him easily.
09:25His hair appeared well kept,
09:27and he smelled earth-like.
09:29Suddenly, he wrapped me in his huge arms and a hug,
09:32and began to talk in my ear,
09:34saying my name once again.
09:37Before I leave you,
09:38I wanted to share my warmth of you.
09:41Thank you for your beautiful heart.
09:44I felt his strong arms gently hold me,
09:46and I became emotional
09:47and began to sob in his arms,
09:49as he said,
09:50Your heart is larger than most of your kind.
09:53You gave food to my family and to many others,
09:56but be careful.
09:57Not all of my kind,
09:59just like yours,
10:00have a good heart.
10:02You will know the others who have red eyes.
10:04They are savage and do not like your kind.
10:07I was worried for a long time
10:09we did not see you in these lands,
10:11and believed they may have taken your spirit.
10:15I thought about the spirit part and what he meant.
10:17I think he was saying he thought
10:19a red-eyed Bigfoot might have killed me.
10:21He continued holding me and speaking.
10:23When I saw you again,
10:25my heart became warmer,
10:26and before my time here,
10:28I wanted to share my heart with yours
10:30one last time.
10:32He released me from his huge arms
10:34as I heard the sound of a truck in the distance.
10:37He looked at me with a gentle grin on his face,
10:39and then he patted me gently on my head
10:41and rubbed my hair and said,
10:43I must now say goodbye.
10:46I began to sob again
10:48as he stood up towering over me,
10:49and I noticed on his hand
10:51he had a dark spot of hair.
10:53I realized it was his hand
10:55I had seen reaching for food
10:57in the wood boxes
10:57when I was a small boy.
11:01As I watched him turn and walk away,
11:03he vanished into the trees
11:04as though he melted into them,
11:06and so did the others.
11:09I stood sobbing in the middle of the road
11:10and felt like I lost an old friend.
11:13Back at the site of the accident,
11:15my brother had been looking for me,
11:16following the road towards the farm,
11:18and saw the debris of rocks and branches
11:20on the right fork of the road.
11:22He assumed that I had left the debris
11:24to let him know that I had gone down
11:25the left fork on the road.
11:27When he found me in the dark
11:29in the middle of the road,
11:30I was still sobbing,
11:31my emotions pouring out
11:33as if a floodgate had burst open.
11:36He asked me what had happened,
11:37and I told him,
11:38trying to compose myself.
11:40We got in the truck,
11:41and we never spoke of the event again.
11:44And I went back to my studies at college,
11:47returning to the farm on every break,
11:49but I never saw them again.
11:51I hope Nanook is still alive
11:53somewhere in the vastness of the forests,
11:55and his children in the cold winters
11:57are never hungry.
11:59Dad told me before he died
12:01that sometimes when I was away,
12:03he would hear something call out my name
12:04from behind the tree line along our farm,
12:07saying how proud they were of me.
