00:02I'm Lynn Smith, and welcome to the Bigfoot Project.
00:09Hello, my name is Tim, and my grandparents had their sighting around 1974, give or take a year.
00:15They farm near a town called Anita, North Dakota.
00:18It's pretty much about an hour and a half due west of Grand Forks.
00:23I've always been fascinated with Bigfoot ever since I could remember.
00:26When I was very young, I remember seeing Nimoy's In Search of Shows with both Bigfoot and the Yeti.
00:33My father had gotten a Reader's Digest book in the mail called Strange Stories, Amazing Facts
00:38that was filled with many, many pages of stories and items that terrified and captivated me all at the same
00:44time,
00:45and Bigfoot was in those pages.
00:48I even remember, at the age of four or five, making cardboard feet,
00:52strapping them to my boots with Mom's macrame cord and putting on my mother's fake black fur coat.
00:58Off I went out the door and across our one-acre yard towards the street.
01:02I aimed to walk behind the bush line by the street,
01:05trying to fool the passers-by in their cars that they were seeing the Northwoods legend.
01:09Of course, we lived pretty much smack dab in the middle of town,
01:12and I'm sure if I was spotted, they just thought,
01:15well, there's that weird kid again.
01:17Anyway, I've been super interested my whole life.
01:22One night my mother called to Gab and asked,
01:24what are you doing?
01:25I told her I was just looking at the internet.
01:27When she inquired on subject matter, I told her Bigfoot sightings.
01:31She then said,
01:33you've been cuckoo about Bigfoot since you were very little.
01:35Did I ever tell you about Grandma and Grandpa's Bigfoot sighting?
01:39I've got to tell you, I damn near dropped the phone I was so taken aback.
01:43I asked how in the heck she went the last 25 years with my grandparents having a Bigfoot sighting
01:49and never even told me.
01:51She said,
01:52I never thought about it until now,
01:54because I told Grandpa he probably saw a bear.
01:57He got so upset with me that he never brought it up again.
02:01I eagerly grasped the phone and said,
02:03well, Mom, spill it.
02:05She then told me what my Grandpa had told her and Dad on the phone many years ago.
02:09My grandparents were authentic, old, true-to-life Norwegians.
02:14Their parents came from Norway,
02:16and they spoke Norwegian to each other fluently around the house
02:19when others weren't there all the time.
02:21They didn't think of or know of Bigfoot at the time they had their sighting,
02:25so when they called Mom and Dad the next day,
02:27my Grandpa said,
02:28we saw an inbred in the farmyard last night.
02:32My Dad said,
02:33what the heck are you talking about?
02:35Grandpa said,
02:37we pulled into the farmyard yesterday after being into town.
02:40It was twilight,
02:41and you didn't quite need your headlights on the car yet.
02:44Grandpa continued,
02:45we rounded the bend after the trees,
02:47and there was movement behind the granary.
02:49Out walks this hairy man.
02:51He walked across the yard,
02:53through the garden,
02:53and into the trees and back of the house,
02:55and then just disappeared.
02:57My Mom cut in and said,
02:59you probably just saw a bear.
03:01Grandpa snapped loudly at her.
03:03It wasn't a goddamn bear.
03:05I know what a bear looks like.
03:07This thing walked on two legs,
03:09all the way to the garden,
03:10through the garden,
03:11and into the woods,
03:12all on two legs.
03:14It looked right at us,
03:15and this thing plainly had hands
03:17on the end of its swinging arms.
03:19It wasn't a goddamn bear.
03:22My Mom said that my grandparents then
03:24just abruptly quit talking about it,
03:26ending the conversation,
03:28and hung up,
03:29never to mention it again.
03:34My husband and I were doing yard work.
03:36It was a late summer evening,
03:38around six o'clock.
03:39I had finished mowing,
03:40and he was cleaning up our fence line
03:42that faces an alcove of thick trees,
03:44bushes, and vines
03:45that tend to crawl through the holes in our fence.
03:48He always wears headphones
03:50when doing yard work.
03:51I went upstairs to sit on the front porch,
03:53as I always do afterwards,
03:55while he finished up.
03:56About five or ten minutes after being up there,
03:59he called me.
03:59I could tell something was wrong
04:01based on the tone of his voice.
04:03My husband's a paramedic,
04:05and only says the word serious
04:06when it's necessary.
04:08He said,
04:09Hey, can I ask you a question?
04:11Do Bigfoot come out in the daytime?
04:14My reply was,
04:16Well, yeah, I mean,
04:17you hear all the time of daytime sightings.
04:19Why?
04:20He said,
04:21Because I think I just saw one.
04:23But also thinking back now,
04:25it was getting dusk,
04:26which is typical of them coming out.
04:28Anyway, he goes on to tell me
04:30that while he was fiddling
04:31with the line on the weed eater,
04:33that he had the urge to look up.
04:35I would personally say
04:36it could have been internally
04:37he sensed something there.
04:39So he looked up,
04:40and he said
04:41that standing a little way in front of him
04:42was something big,
04:44black, and tall,
04:45staring at him.
04:46He said it gruffed at him
04:47and was gone.
04:49He said the whole encounter
04:50lasted seconds.
04:51He said in his opinion,
04:53it was definitely an animal.
04:55However,
04:55it was certainly not a bear,
04:57and certainly not a deer.
04:59In that area opposite our fence,
05:02it's very thick.
05:03No person would be able to walk in it.
05:05There's briars,
05:06and it's just not easy terrain
05:07and no way to tell tracks.
05:09He asked me to stay back there with him
05:11while he finished up
05:12and said,
05:13I'm serious.
05:14I don't feel comfortable
05:15standing back here alone.
05:17My husband's six foot one
05:19and weighs 289 pounds.
05:21I, on the other hand,
05:22five foot four
05:23and 140 pounds.
05:25So for him to ask me to stay
05:26for security purposes
05:27was weird in itself.
05:30It was just more comforting
05:31not to be alone
05:32in that instance,
05:33I guess.
05:34When I went down there,
05:35I used the camera on my phone
05:37to line up with the tree
05:38he said he saw it at.
05:39I'm horrible at distances,
05:41so all I can tell you
05:42is that I zoomed my camera in
05:43as far as I could
05:44to get a closer view
05:45of where it was at.
05:47Now,
05:48what I forgot to mention is
05:49when I was outside in the front
05:50before he called me,
05:51I heard a clear vocalization.
05:54You know,
05:54the call they do.
05:55It sounded extremely close.
05:59Ever since that day,
06:00around the same time
06:01every night,
06:02our black lab freaks out
06:03to come inside.
06:05Our yellow lab
06:06constantly barks
06:07at that fence
06:08or did in that stretch of time.
06:09With it being winter now,
06:11all of our trees in that area
06:12are barren
06:13with no leaves or coverage,
06:14so we haven't had
06:15any instances
06:16since winter has come.
06:18Hunter,
06:18our black lab,
06:19still incessantly barks
06:21to come in, however,
06:22at 6 p.m. every night.
06:28This happened
06:29in the summer of 2002
06:30in Pierce County, Washington.
06:33My dad had taken me
06:34and my sisters,
06:35brother,
06:35and my stepmother out
06:36for a day of rock hunting
06:37so that he could find
06:39the rare and odd rocks
06:40that he loves to go
06:40and find in the mountain areas.
06:43Me and my younger sister
06:44were walking along a trail
06:45that my stepmother
06:46and youngest sister
06:47had just come from.
06:48They said it was a nice trail
06:50and that we should check it out.
06:51So we did.
06:53About a fourth of a mile
06:55to a half a mile
06:56down the trail,
06:56me and my sister
06:57stop at this little creek.
06:59We stay there a while
07:00playing in the water.
07:01I wanted to continue
07:03down the trail,
07:03but my sister freaked out on me,
07:05telling me that she had
07:06a very bad feeling
07:07and wanted to go back
07:08to where my dad
07:09and the others were.
07:10I told her it was okay
07:11and eventually convinced her
07:13to head down the trail
07:14a bit more.
07:15However,
07:16once we started off again,
07:17something charged us
07:18from a wooded hill
07:19that was right next to us.
07:21We heard this horrible,
07:22terrifying howled growl
07:24coming towards us
07:25as the trees and bushes
07:26moved around
07:27as if a truck
07:28was coming through them.
07:29All I saw
07:30was a black figure
07:31and I started running.
07:33I yelled to my sister
07:34to get the hell out of here,
07:35me and her both cursing
07:37and running
07:37as fast as we could.
07:39As we ran back,
07:40I fell and hit my ribs.
07:42I couldn't run any longer
07:43and looked back
07:44to make sure
07:44whatever the hell it was
07:45wasn't chasing us.
07:47Nothing was there.
07:48My sister wouldn't stop
07:50so I had to keep going
07:51even though I was
07:52so out of breath
07:53I couldn't run anymore.
07:54She wouldn't stop.
07:56When we got back,
07:57we were both crying
07:58and so scared
07:59that we left right away
08:00because we couldn't
08:01stay there any longer.
08:02We were too scared.
08:04I thought at the time
08:05it was a bear or a cougar.
08:07Then on the way home,
08:08I realized
08:08those don't make
08:09sounds like that.
08:11I know what those sound like
08:13and whatever was chasing us
08:14did not sound like
08:15a bear or a cougar.
08:18After hearing
08:19some pre-recorded
08:20supposed whoops
08:21and howlings
08:21from Bigfoot in my area,
08:23it got me scared
08:24because they sounded
08:25so similar
08:26to what me
08:27and my sister heard.
08:31In December of 1990
08:33in King County, Washington,
08:34I was driving a truck
08:36while hauling a dozer
08:37on a trailer.
08:38My task
08:39was to deliver
08:40the dozer
08:41to a logging site.
08:41It was early morning
08:43and I had driven
08:44east out of
08:44North Bend, Washington
08:45along the Middle Fork
08:47of the Snoqualmie River
08:48on southeast Middle Fork Road
08:50which turns into
08:51NFD 5060 Road
08:53east of Mount Cy.
08:55Then I took a logging road
08:56on my way
08:56to the drop-off site.
08:58As I drove down
08:59the logging road,
09:00up ahead
09:01along the side of the road,
09:02I saw two tall people
09:03walking in the direction
09:05I was heading.
09:06My first reaction was
09:08that they were really tall
09:09and must be
09:09basketball players.
09:11As I got closer,
09:12it looked like
09:13they were wearing
09:14dark-colored
09:14full-body wetsuits
09:15with hoods.
09:17I tried to make sense
09:18of what I was seeing
09:19and thought maybe
09:20they were bow hunters
09:20wearing a special suit.
09:22As I drove closer,
09:24I could see that
09:25they both had
09:25unusually long arms
09:27and that one
09:28had a more female shape
09:29and stood about
09:30seven feet tall
09:31compared to the other one
09:33who had a male shape
09:34and stood about
09:35eight feet tall.
09:37The subjects then
09:38reacted to my approach
09:39by stopping
09:40and turning around
09:40toward me
09:41and stood in the middle
09:42of the road
09:42in a slightly
09:43crouched position.
09:45They seemed agitated
09:46and with their feet
09:47stationary,
09:47they turned and looked
09:49at both sides
09:49of the road
09:50by rotating
09:51their upper bodies
09:52at the waist
09:53back and forth,
09:54back and forth
09:54while swinging
09:55their arms
09:56at their sides.
09:57When they did this,
09:58they looked
09:59very ape-like.
10:01As I closed
10:02to about
10:0235 to 40 yards away,
10:04the female jumped
10:05and ran off
10:06to the left side
10:06of the road
10:07toward the river
10:08and disappeared
10:09into the brush.
10:10The male stayed
10:11in the road
10:11a little longer,
10:12shuffling to the left
10:13side of the road.
10:15Finally,
10:15as I got even closer,
10:17in one step
10:17from the edge
10:18of the road,
10:19he jumped a distance
10:20of around 20 feet
10:21and easily cleared
10:22what I now could see
10:23was a thicket
10:24of thorny blackberry vines
10:26at least eight feet tall
10:27and he was gone.
10:29They were both
10:30dark brown in color
10:31from head to toe.
10:32Their faces
10:33were dark brown also.
10:35I didn't really notice
10:36if they had fur or hair.
10:38Perhaps the fur or hair
10:39was wet and matted down
10:40from the rain.
10:42I didn't notice
10:43any odor or sounds.
10:45I continued
10:46to the drop-off site
10:47one to two miles
10:48further down the road
10:49and began to unload
10:50the dozer.
10:51Another driver
10:52who was less than
10:53a minute or so
10:54behind me
10:54on the same road
10:55arrived.
10:56After unloading
10:57and somewhat
10:57composing myself,
10:59I asked the other driver
11:00if he'd seen
11:01anything strange
11:01along the logging road
11:02on his way in.
11:03He said he had not.
11:05I then left
11:06the drop-off site
11:07and stopped
11:08at the encounter location.
11:10I looked around
11:10but did not find
11:11any large tracks
11:12in the thin layer
11:13of snow
11:13along the side
11:14of the road.
11:15There was no snow
11:16on the dirt
11:16or gravel logging road
11:17itself.
11:19I didn't want to
11:20battle the blackberry vines
11:21to follow the creature's
11:22escape route
11:23into the forest
11:23so I took off.
11:27The only explanation
11:28I have for what I saw
11:29is that the creatures
11:30must have been Sasquatches
11:32because no human
11:33could be that big
11:34and jump like that
11:35and I know
11:36they were not bears.
11:41Tuesdays were
11:42David's least
11:42favorite days.
11:43At least on Mondays
11:45he could find himself
11:45in a mindset to work
11:47but Tuesdays
11:48were a real block
11:49in the week for him.
11:50Of course,
11:51all the days
11:52began seeming the same
11:53when he began working
11:54for a repeat truck company.
11:56David always had
11:57a knack for driving.
11:58When he was 16
11:59he drove as a
12:00pizza delivery man.
12:02When he turned 18
12:03he started taking
12:04his friends out
12:05on camping trips
12:05to the woods.
12:07David had grown up
12:08with a real man's man
12:09of a dad
12:10so naturally
12:11he was taught
12:11how to hunt
12:12from a young age.
12:14When he was 25 years old
12:15and working at a desk job
12:17he had taken the opportunity
12:18every weekend
12:19to go hunting.
12:20The wilderness
12:21was really his second home.
12:23He always thought
12:24landscapes were
12:25beautifully mysterious
12:26hiding dozens of creatures
12:28in plain sight.
12:29David's parents
12:30had always warned him
12:31about encountering
12:32a Bigfoot.
12:34Everybody's parents
12:34have their kooky beliefs
12:36and this was theirs.
12:38His mother and father
12:39had met on a mission trip
12:41in Arizona
12:41trying to track down
12:42the creature
12:43years past
12:43and both of them
12:45lost time and motivation
12:46to get out
12:46and hunt down the creature
12:47but they never
12:48stopped believing.
12:51Eventually
12:52David got tired
12:53with his desk job
12:54and quit.
12:55About two months later
12:56he decided to pursue
12:57a career in truck driving.
12:58He enjoyed being
13:00in his own world
13:00and he could sit
13:01with his thoughts
13:02and drive along highways
13:03decorated on the brim
13:04with nature.
13:06He enjoyed the solitude
13:07and self-responsibility
13:08of traveling alone
13:09and in a timely manner.
13:11He also enjoyed the fact
13:12that his Leonard Skinner
13:13and Rolling Stones CDs
13:14got a lot of use.
13:17On this Tuesday night
13:18David was coming
13:19from Idaho
13:20carrying a heap full
13:21of their famous potatoes.
13:23I-15 southbound
13:24toward a town
13:25called St. Georgia
13:26in Utah
13:27was his direction.
13:28It was going to be
13:29a long night
13:30but he was prepared
13:31having stocked up
13:32with gas station coffee
13:33and some cheap
13:34energy drinks.
13:36At about midnight
13:37a thin fog
13:38began to roll in
13:39and in the distance
13:40Dave could hear
13:41the howl of a wolf.
13:43There was nobody else
13:44on the highway
13:44around him
13:45at that time of night
13:46and that made him
13:47feel uncomfortably alone.
13:49Usually
13:50there would be
13:51a few other
13:51late night stragglers
13:52but there was nothing.
13:54No other car headlights
13:55reflecting off the pavement
13:57and no red taillights
13:58glistening ahead of him.
14:00An hour went by
14:01and the fog
14:02had nearly tripled
14:03in thickness.
14:04Dave clicked on
14:05his high beams
14:06and persisted forward.
14:08There was a sign
14:09that read
14:09gas two miles
14:10but the truck
14:11was doing surprisingly
14:12well on fuel.
14:13He thought about
14:14pulling over
14:15and resting his eyes
14:16and mind
14:16for a couple of minutes
14:17but took a second glance
14:19at his energy drinks
14:20snapped one open
14:21and drank
14:21until he felt
14:22jittery enough
14:23to keep driving.
14:25Suddenly
14:25the road thinned
14:26into two lanes
14:27and David
14:27had to slow down.
14:29The fog
14:29kept thickening
14:30by the minute
14:31so David
14:32slowed down
14:32even more.
14:34He peered
14:34at the light
14:35glowing from his dashboard.
14:36The time was
14:371.30am
14:38and David
14:39couldn't help
14:39but continue
14:40to feel
14:40strangely isolated.
14:42He accounted
14:43this to his
14:44distaste
14:44for Tuesdays.
14:46Suddenly
14:47out of the corner
14:47of David's eye
14:48he saw
14:49what could have
14:49been a deer
14:50running through
14:50the bushes
14:51out the left
14:51side of his truck.
14:52The animal
14:53ducked
14:54behind bushes.
14:55David
14:56had never
14:56seen a deer
14:57run that fast
14:58and figured
14:58something was
14:59chasing it.
15:01On the spur
15:01of the moment
15:02a creature
15:03growled
15:03and emerged
15:04onto the road.
15:05Its eyes
15:06glistened
15:06a bright yellow
15:07that cut
15:08through the fog.
15:09It stood
15:098 feet high
15:10and towered
15:11over the hood
15:12of the truck
15:12that was
15:13barreling
15:13straight towards it.
15:15David grabbed
15:16his wheel
15:16and jerked it
15:17to the right
15:17swerving out
15:18of the way
15:18just in time
15:19as he passed
15:20this beast
15:21it roared at him.
15:22making the truck
15:23window vibrate.
15:25David was headed
15:26straight for a guardrail
15:27and jerked the wheel
15:28again
15:28this time
15:29left.
15:30He managed
15:31to successfully
15:31evade any damage
15:32to the vehicle
15:33and pulled over
15:34to the side.
15:35He looked
15:36in his rearview mirror
15:37to see where
15:37the creature was
15:38but when he tried
15:39to find it
15:40David saw nothing
15:41but pavement
15:41and a calm sky.
15:44He got back
15:45in his truck
15:45and let out
15:46a gasp of air
15:46beginning to
15:47hyperventilate.
15:48He took out
15:49his cell phone
15:50and dialed his parents.
15:50His mother
15:52answered the phone
15:52and she sounded
15:53groggy
15:53and unrested.
15:55It's the middle
15:55of the night
15:56David
15:56what's the matter
15:57this better be good
15:58his mother
15:59said impatiently.
16:01David could hardly
16:02catch his breath.
16:03It's real mom
16:04it's real
16:05I saw it.
16:06What in the hell
16:07are you talking
16:08about David?
16:09Bigfoot
16:10a Sasquatch
16:10whatever the hell
16:11you call it
16:12it was huge
16:13and hairy
16:14and roared
16:14louder than anything
16:15I've ever heard
16:16roar in my life.
16:18There was a moment
16:19of silence
16:20and David's mother
16:20told him to calm down
16:21and to drink some water.
16:23The two stayed on the phone
16:25for three more hours
16:26talking about how
16:27the creature
16:27was truly real
16:28and truly terrifying.
16:31The lonely open road
16:32is scary
16:33even without having
16:34a run-in
16:35with a Bigfoot.
16:36I've heard stories
16:37about the terror
16:38that runs cold
16:39through your veins.
16:40It's primal
16:41and deep
16:41as though we've evolved
16:42in proximity
16:43with these creatures.
