00:04I'm Lynn Smith, and welcome to the Bigfoot Project.
00:09The following story was emailed to the Bigfoot Project by Barry.
00:17Hello, Lynn. My name is Barry.
00:20About me and my belief.
00:22My whole life, from a kid on, I've always heard of Bigfoot,
00:25even though I can't claim to have an experience to back up my belief.
00:28I often say, when talking about the subject, that I believe simply because I choose to.
00:34I've often thought many times, if I ever did see one face-to-face, I'd probably die of fright.
00:40As a kid, from perhaps five years old and upwards,
00:43we lived just outside the city limits, surrounded by wooded areas.
00:47And heck, that's where us boys played and hung out growing up.
00:51Fishing, building forts, and so on.
00:53For me, I just know I've always been drawn to the woods.
00:56And in my later age, I have a good reason to.
00:59I love to study and find wild, edible plants.
01:03First, what I've seen, or even not seen, there's no way I can say what caused these events,
01:08and it surely could have been a human being.
01:11By the way, I live in south-central Virginia, near Danville,
01:15which is near the North Carolina state line.
01:18Once, my brother and his friend claimed to have heard a loud roar
01:21and see a tree falling over while in the woods.
01:23I always sort of dismissed it, because I know they would try and scare me or play tricks on me,
01:28so I never really gave it any thought.
01:31My experience happened one winter's day.
01:33I was alone outside, no one to play with, and I was just plain bored.
01:37So I started walking up the road.
01:39We lived on a dead-end road, maybe a mile long.
01:42It had snowed a few days or so before then, and most was melted away,
01:46except in some of the more shaded areas.
01:49Halfway up my road was a driveway leading into an area surrounded by woods.
01:53It was a home that must have had a mobile home on it at one time, but was long moved
01:58out.
01:59There were outbuildings and all, we all knew about it.
02:01We called it the Hollards, because that was the name of the folks who owned it.
02:05We were always told the people were saving that property to give to their son
02:09when he got old enough and out on his own.
02:11We skipped school there, played there, and when older, we even partied there.
02:15But on this day, I was young, maybe ten, give or take,
02:18and I went up there to kill my boredom.
02:21While walking, I came across tracks.
02:24So for fun, I looked at them to see what could have left them.
02:27The more I looked, the more I was amazed.
02:30They weren't all that big, they were about as long as a grown-up human,
02:33but the toe area did seem a bit wider.
02:36I'm thinking, what fool walked through snow barefooted?
02:40So the more I looked, the more I wanted to know.
02:42So I backtracked to see where they came from.
02:45As you turned into this long driveway, to the right was a low area of woods,
02:50which was between the normal road and the Hollards.
02:52Now that I'm older, I know why the wooded area was so thick,
02:56because it was basically a bowl, a low area,
02:59so it had to stay wet and bursting with thick growth.
03:02Also, it was so thick.
03:04It was one of the only areas of the woods I never went into.
03:07It just looked uninviting and thick.
03:10But that's where the tracks came from.
03:12I didn't go any further into the thickness to see more.
03:15Instead, I started following the tracks.
03:17They went from that area, across the opening of the property,
03:21down into the next small stretch of woods, towards a large field.
03:25Following them, I noticed it had totally disregarded a briar patch,
03:29just seemed to walk on through without a care.
03:32They went down toward the field, where there was no snow left to see.
03:36I remember looking at the tracks in detail,
03:38and even then, I knew that tracks in the snow, when they melt, get larger.
03:42But again, they weren't no bigger than a grown human, just a tad wider.
03:46But the toes were very defined in the snow.
03:49So perhaps they were fresher than the time the snow actually fell some days ago.
03:54I can't remember what I thought made them at the time, only that,
03:57wow, this guy must have been totally drunk.
04:00I wasn't scared or anything.
04:02And yes, even if it did register that it had been a Bigfoot,
04:05I would have been scared and ran out of there, probably never to return.
04:09So today, I simply want to believe it was just some teenager Bigfoot.
04:14Somehow, now, I feel grateful to have seen them,
04:17and even more grateful, I did not see what made them.
04:21The next incident happened late one night, a few years later, maybe around 11pm.
04:26It was just me and my older brother at home that night.
04:29Dad drove a semi, and Mom was working second shift.
04:32My brother was upstairs in his room listening to music,
04:35and probably talking to a girl on the phone,
04:37and I was downstairs on the sofa watching TV.
04:40We had a small dog named Charlie, and he was outside,
04:43when all of a sudden he started barking like crazy.
04:46I can't say I've ever heard him bark so much, or so, I don't know the word, intent.
04:52It was bad.
04:53It sort of got on my nerves.
04:55It was pitch black that night, and we didn't have AC, we had an attic fan,
04:59so we left the windows open to drawing cool air.
05:02Wasn't really bright in my den, maybe a lamp in the TV.
05:06So I got to the window closest to the porch, where Charlie sounded as if he was,
05:10pulled back the curtain, and stuck my face up to the screen, and shouted,
05:13Shut up, Charlie!
05:15Through the very little light that filtered outside through the curtains,
05:18I could see a dark figure move by the window, maybe six feet or so away,
05:22moving from the porch area to the corner of the house.
05:25No detail, not overly tall, and no smell that I can recall.
05:30Whatever it was made no noise, nor did it speed up when I saw it.
05:35Thinking back now, a human would have ran.
05:38Needless to say, I was freaked out.
05:40I darted upstairs to tell my brother what I had seen,
05:43and he came downstairs with me to see if he could see it,
05:46or figure out who was prowling outside our home so late at night.
05:49I even assumed it was someone messing around outside.
05:53About that time, here comes Mum pulling up.
05:56I ran outside to greet her and tell her what had happened.
05:59During that time, I walked over in front of the den's picture window,
06:02just to look at the area where I'd seen someone or something.
06:05There was an area of grass that was flattened,
06:08more or less in the shape of a footprint.
06:10Then I knew for sure I'd seen someone or something,
06:13and it wasn't my imagination.
06:15Can I say it was a Bigfoot?
06:17No way.
06:18I couldn't make it out in any detail,
06:20but it was something that walked by my window.
06:23Seems I remember looking around back by our sliding glass doors as well,
06:27and finding impressions.
06:28You know, having something or someone walking around your house
06:31that late at night is super creepy.
06:35Otherwise, while growing up in and around those woods,
06:38I've never seen or heard anything unusual,
06:40nor was I looking for anything.
06:42I didn't know to,
06:44or even think the words were big enough to support many wild animals,
06:47other than foxes and other small animals,
06:49and of course deer.
06:51Nor did I ever hear of any neighbors seeing anything.
06:54But, you know,
06:55most who would have seen something
06:56wouldn't have said anything.
07:00This story may not be good enough for your videos,
07:02but I figured you may enjoy reading it yourself,
07:05and I know I've never really seen anything,
07:07but I know, deep down in my gut,
07:10these people or beings are real.
07:13Everyone cannot be lying.
07:15Some may, but not all.
07:17Again, thank you for your channel.
07:19It fills my nights now,
07:20and I'm addicted, thanks to you.
07:22Barry
07:28I'm an avid runner.
07:29I run close to 50 miles a week,
07:31every week.
07:32I often run the exact same route.
07:34When I trail run,
07:36I have been followed by deer and other wildlife
07:38that comes up from time to time.
07:40However, today, October 4th, 2012,
07:44was different.
07:45First, I was not on a trail,
07:47but a country road near my house.
07:48I crossed a main road
07:50and was headed to my turnaround point.
07:52There's a thick wooded area
07:53on the right hand of the road.
07:55I heard something in the woods
07:56and thought maybe it was a deer or a dog.
07:58I kept running,
07:59but the noise kept happening.
08:01It was like someone was in the woods,
08:03just out of sight,
08:04running in the leaves
08:05as I was running on the road.
08:07I would slow down,
08:08and it would slow down.
08:10I would speed up,
08:11and it would speed up.
08:13When I passed a house,
08:14the noise would stop for a few yards,
08:16then pick back up again in the woods.
08:19I'm an avid hunter,
08:20and this really sounded like a person
08:22or something like a person
08:23running along in the woods
08:24as I ran the road.
08:26Thing is,
08:27the wooded side of the road
08:28is very up and down
08:30with several deep drop-offs,
08:31so whatever was keeping pace with me
08:34was able to navigate them
08:35with no problem at all.
08:37I run a nine-minute mile pace,
08:39so whatever was following me
08:40in the woods
08:41had to keep that pace,
08:42yet in the woods
08:43and the deep valley areas.
08:45Maybe I was hearing things.
08:47However,
08:48there was a recent sighting
08:49in our area.
08:54Two friends and I
08:55were backpacking
08:56on Great North Mountain
08:57in the winter of 2002.
08:59It was our second night,
09:00and we reserved a stone cabin
09:02from the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club
09:05named Sugar Knob Cabin.
09:07We had not seen anyone all day,
09:09there was an ice storm coming,
09:10so that was probably why.
09:12We made a fire outside the cabin
09:14just before dusk
09:15while it was still nice out.
09:16We began to hear
09:17slow-moving,
09:18very heavy footsteps
09:20walking around the perimeter
09:21of the location we were at.
09:23We thought it was a bear or a deer,
09:25but it was clearly on two feet
09:27by the sounds it was making.
09:29We called out to see
09:30if it was a poacher
09:31or just someone walking around,
09:32but no response was given.
09:35This is a pretty remote spot
09:36and definitely not very visited
09:38in the winter months.
09:40The walking sounds continued,
09:42but because the sun was down by now,
09:43we could not see too far
09:44into the woods.
09:46We all heard the walking sounds
09:47for quite a while,
09:48and it really freaked us out.
09:50So much so,
09:51we abandoned the fire
09:52and pretty much locked ourselves
09:53into the cabin.
09:55All of us had a lot
09:56of outdoor experience
09:57and had backpacked a lot as well.
09:59We had never heard
10:00or experienced anything
10:01like this before.
10:03The sounds got closer
10:04once inside the cabin.
10:06It's a stone cabin,
10:07so it's fairly well insulated
10:09from noise,
10:09so whatever it was,
10:11was large.
10:12The footsteps seemed to stop
10:14and continue for maybe
10:15an hour or so.
10:16We made dinner inside,
10:17and after we ate,
10:18the footsteps were right
10:20next to the cabin.
10:21There was a window
10:22opposite the door
10:23with wood shutters
10:24on the blinds
10:24that were closed,
10:25so I opened them
10:26expecting to see a person.
10:28But we all witnessed
10:29a dark,
10:30very large face
10:32looking at us
10:33about a foot
10:33outside the window.
10:35We were terrified,
10:37shaking,
10:37and speechless.
10:38The creature took off
10:40after a few seconds
10:41of seeing us
10:41and vice versa.
10:42We never heard
10:43any more sounds
10:44after that either.
10:46We stayed up all night though,
10:47just kind of standing guard.
10:49The next morning,
10:50we awoke to ice everywhere
10:51and could not find
10:52any tracks or evidence
10:53of what we saw and heard.
10:55We hiked down
10:56the Stony Creek Trail
10:57to the cars
10:58as fast as we could
10:59without getting hurt.
11:01There was a cabin journal
11:02at that time
11:03and we read it over
11:04that night
11:04after the incident
11:05and read several accounts
11:07that were similar to ours.
11:09We never stayed there again
11:10and this is the first time
11:12I've ever told this
11:13because I don't want
11:13people thinking I'm nuts.
11:19On December 20th, 2021,
11:22while my grandson
11:23and I were still hunting
11:24for white-tailed deer
11:25in eastern Virginia,
11:26at 4.40 p.m.,
11:27we heard what sounded like
11:29two wood blocks
11:30being hit together.
11:31Within seconds,
11:32we saw an animal
11:34of some sort
11:34traveling upright,
11:36covered in smooth black fur,
11:38moving southwest
11:38to northeast
11:39very quickly.
11:41We could only see
11:42from the animal's
11:42upper thigh upward.
11:44The head was round
11:45with no visible neck
11:46and we could see
11:47no facial features.
11:49We saw the animal
11:50only from its left side.
11:52From the moment
11:53it first appeared
11:54until it moved out of sight.
11:55It was only
11:56three to five seconds.
11:57In that span of time,
11:58it covered approximately
11:5960 yards
12:00through thick brush
12:01over uneven terrain.
12:04There was a stiff breeze
12:05from the east-northeast,
12:07so I don't believe
12:08that the animal
12:08scented us
12:09or knew we were there.
12:11I've been a hunter,
12:12a trapper,
12:13camper,
12:13and woodsman
12:14for more than 50
12:15of my 62 years.
12:17This animal was upright
12:18on two legs.
12:20It definitely was not a bear.
12:22I have seen many bears.
12:24I could not identify it at all.
12:26I've been in the woods
12:27every day since
12:28with a video camera.
12:30I did find
12:31what I believe
12:32to be stick structures
12:33and two dens,
12:34but I don't know
12:35what animal they belong to.
12:36I'm puzzled,
12:37but committed
12:38to identifying
12:39this animal
12:39if I can.
12:43My family owns
12:44a small secluded cabin
12:45in southwest Virginia.
12:47This past summer,
12:48we decided to spend
12:49around three weeks there.
12:51The cabin has electricity
12:52and running water,
12:53but no TVs
12:54or computers.
12:56The third day
12:57of our visit,
12:57the nearest neighbor,
12:58a cattle farmer
12:59who lives about
13:00two miles down the road,
13:01came up to our cabin
13:02and informed us
13:03that during the past
13:04two weeks
13:05that some of his cattle
13:06had been slaughtered
13:07and basically mutilated.
13:09There are foxes
13:10and wolves
13:11in those hills
13:11and occasionally
13:12a small black bear,
13:14but nothing that could
13:15do this much damage
13:16over such a spread out time.
13:18He asked us
13:19if we had seen anything
13:20and told us
13:21to keep our eyes open
13:22if we saw
13:22a rabid fox,
13:23wolf,
13:24bear,
13:24or any other animal
13:25that could possibly
13:26have done it.
13:27We told him we would
13:29and he thanked us
13:30and left.
13:31The next five or six days
13:33passed uneventfully,
13:34but around a week
13:35after the farmer
13:36came to our house,
13:37we experienced something.
13:39That day,
13:39we barbecued
13:40hot dogs and hamburgers
13:41and had a small party
13:42with some close friends,
13:43but none of them
13:44stayed the night.
13:46Around 11.30,
13:47my wife and I
13:48decided to go to bed.
13:49We slept peacefully
13:50until about 3.45
13:52when there was
13:52a loud crash outside
13:53and our dog
13:54started barking furiously.
13:57I didn't have a rifle
13:58or any other type of weapon,
13:59so I decided
14:00to cautiously
14:01proceed downstairs
14:02and turn on the floodlights
14:04around the cabin.
14:05The switch to the lights
14:06was outside
14:07on the deck of the cabin,
14:08so I proceeded out there
14:09and turned them on.
14:11What I saw next
14:13still baffles me.
14:14At my truck,
14:16there was a creature
14:16standing upright,
14:18about 7 feet tall,
14:19with huge claws
14:20on its hands.
14:21It had white hair
14:22that was almost grey,
14:24but I couldn't really
14:25see its eyes.
14:26It seemed to be
14:27searching around
14:28the bed of my truck
14:28and was paying
14:29no attention
14:30to the now frantic dog.
14:32When the lights
14:33first came on,
14:34it did nothing
14:34but continue its search,
14:35but it then
14:36looked up at the deck.
14:39By now,
14:40I was frozen in horror
14:41and it turned around
14:42and made eye contact
14:43with me.
14:44It then made
14:45a horrible screeching sound,
14:46almost as if it was
14:48in terror
14:48from the sight of me.
14:50At first,
14:51it seemed like
14:51it was going to charge at me
14:52and climb the steps
14:53onto the deck,
14:54but then,
14:55in a terrorized rage,
14:57it made another screech
14:58and sprinted away.
15:00It ran upright
15:01and its claws
15:02almost went past
15:03its knees.
15:04The next day,
15:05we left the cabin
15:06and reported
15:07what we saw
15:07to the local deputy.
15:09He dismissed it
15:10as nothing more
15:11than a bear
15:11and said
15:12we should not
15:13concern ourselves
15:14with backwoods business.
