00:02I'm Lucy Fink. I'm a video producer at Refinery29.
00:05But every so often, I like to try other people's jobs.
00:08Today, I'm in Vail, Colorado, and I'm going to see if I have what it takes to be a pro
00:13snowboarder for the day.
00:14This is Lucy for Hire.
00:21I'm Kimmy Fasani. I'm a pro snowboarder for Burton Snowboards.
00:25And I was just awarded the Rider of the Year for Transworld Snowboarding.
00:29Your first challenge is to gear up.
00:32Making sure you have the right product is going to make you feel way more comfortable out on the slopes.
00:37I took Kimmy's direction and geared up appropriately.
00:40First, a base layer to keep me nice and warm.
00:42A sweater to layer up.
00:44A bib so I can look really cool.
00:46A jacket, the most important layer.
00:49A hat to lock the heat in.
00:51Socks to keep my feet dry.
00:53Gloves, particularly the oven mitts to keep my hands really toasty.
00:57And boots, the most essential part of my gear.
01:00Making sure they're comfortable so I can enjoy the whole day ahead.
01:03Once you have your outerwear all set, it's time to get you the proper board.
01:07Kimmy!
01:07Hey!
01:08Hi!
01:09Good to see you.
01:10You too, how do I look?
01:11Oh, you look perfect.
01:12You look so good.
01:13You look great.
01:14I love this blue.
01:15That's what it's about, looking good.
01:16Let's go get a board.
01:17Yeah, let's do this.
01:19The first thing to consider when you're looking at boards is size.
01:22Making sure that you have a board that's right under your chin is perfect.
01:25So here's all the women's boards.
01:27And so this is what I think that's going to be good for you today because it's the step-on.
01:34So it's going to be really convenient for in and out access for your bindings.
01:37And then the height, go ahead and put that up there again.
01:40Yeah, it's like right under your chin, so I think that's perfect.
01:42Perfect!
01:43Awesome.
01:44My first impression of Lucy is that she's super ambitious, really motivated.
01:47I think she's going to do great out there.
01:49It's going to be an awesome day on the mountain.
01:51Your second challenge is to fuel up.
01:54Fuel up, as in food?
01:56Yeah, like what you do to maintain your energy on the hill.
01:59What do you do?
02:00I do a lot of things.
02:01I always have snacks in my pocket, and I actually brought you a handful of snacks.
02:04You brought me snacks?
02:05Yeah, so that you can have kind of a variety of Clif Bars, like an energy block, a builder block,
02:11high protein, and then a little Mojo, which is like a nut-based bar.
02:14Amazing.
02:15And that way you have little bites throughout the day.
02:16Because I always find the lighter meals you eat, the more it's going to be a long-lasting
02:21energy, rather than sitting down for a burger and feeling really weighed down.
02:25Smart.
02:25So these are for me?
02:26Yes.
02:26Oh my gosh.
02:27After we fueled up, it was time to shred.
02:30So, this would be an uncool way to carry your stuff.
02:35All right.
02:36Now I'm cool.
02:38I'm really excited to be out on the slopes with Lucy today, because I get to show her
02:42all the foundation building skills that she'll need to get up the hill and down the hill.
02:46I haven't been on a board in about 10 years.
02:48So once I'm on, what are the major pressure points I should be putting in my feet?
02:53So your heel edge is going to be in control of all of your heel side turns.
02:57It's also control for stopping.
02:58And then toe side edge is going to be for your toe side turn.
03:03And anytime that you feel like you want to kind of angle across the mountain, you just
03:07go a little more on your toe side and you'll be able to make a sharper turn.
03:10We rode the chairlift up together and just like that, started shredding.
03:15And what's even better?
03:16I was pretty good, if I do say so myself.
03:19I landed some jumps, took some tumbles, and even face planted after trying to throw and
03:25catch my GoPro stick.
03:30We had a great time.
03:33Lucy was so good.
03:35She acted like a natural.
03:37It was like she's never taken any time off of this sport that she hasn't done in years.
03:41If I were the one doing the hiring, I would definitely have Lucy as a pro snowboarder.
03:45So your final challenge is cool down.
03:49So what do you do to cool down?
03:51I, for me, I like doing some yoga.
03:54I like stretching.
03:55Taking an ice bath will really help replenish your muscles so that you aren't sore tomorrow.
03:59But an ice bath after this situation?
04:03Back in my room, I took Kimmy's cool down advice.
04:06I did a ton of stretching and even some meditative yoga.
04:11And when I was ready, I finally prepared that ice bath Kimmy told me I should do.
04:17Since my legs were the most overworked part of my body on the slopes, I slipped in from
04:22the waist down.
04:23And I tried my very best to relax.
04:28As my snowy snowboarding day came to a close, I realized that being a professional snowboarder
04:33is a lot harder than Kimmy makes it look.
04:35It takes serious practice, discipline, and physical strain to perfect.
04:40But spending the day with the Rider of the Year was a real privilege.
04:44Kimmy made me feel like I could be the next big pro.
04:51Thank you so much for watching my video with Kimmy Fasani, 2016 Rider of the Year.

05:02Woo!
05:03Let's keep shredding.
