00:00Hey guys, it's Lucy Fink and this week I'm trying five days of being vegan.
00:04Vegan donuts are totally a thing.
00:06I don't really know what to say except for that I just don't know what a vegan is.
00:11I've been asking you guys what you want to see me try for five days at a time and an
00:15overwhelming majority of you have suggested that I try five days of being vegan.
00:19Veganism is a lifestyle that rejects the use of any animal products.
00:23Dietary vegans are the ones we hear about most frequently.
00:26Those are people who, in addition to not eating animals, also avoid eating any animal
00:30products.
00:31Eggs, milk, butter, sometimes even honey.
00:34Then there are ethical vegans who are on a vegan diet but who also avoid the exploitation of
00:39animals for any purpose, whether it's clothing, science, entertainment and more.
00:43And then the environmental vegans avoid animal products on the basis that the animal farming
00:48industry is damaging to the environment.
00:50So there is definitely a lot to think about here.
00:53And I decided that I'm going out for dinner tonight because even though I could stay home,
00:57buy a whole bunch of vegan ingredients and cook vegan recipes in my apartment all week,
01:01part of adopting a new lifestyle is being able to integrate your new habits into your already
01:06existing world.
01:07Let's see how I do.
01:08So this guy took me on a date once to this vegan restaurant.
01:11He suggested I get a tempeh lettuce and tomato sandwich and he said it would kind of taste
01:16like bacon.
01:17It didn't taste like bacon.
01:19Day two, so far I've gotten a lot of jokes, a lot of people saying, oh, you're vegan.
01:28One thing I definitely noticed was that after yesterday's meals, I didn't have that uncomfortably
01:33full feeling that I sometimes get after eating.
01:35And that's good.
01:36I went out for dinner last night and I was a little bit disappointed to see that there
01:40was only one vegan item on the restaurant's menu.
01:43Today, I'm going to go check out Gotham Greens.
01:45It's an urban rooftop greenhouse in New York City where they grow pesticide-free produce
01:50indoors and then they ship the produce to local markets and restaurants.
01:56It's incredibly important for vegans, especially first-time vegans, to ensure that they're getting
02:00enough nutrition in their diets as they make this switch.
02:03So in this high-tech, climate-controlled greenhouse, we can ensure that farm-fresh produce grown,
02:08using a lot of precision and a lot of control, can make it onto a supermarket shelf or a restaurant
02:13plate the very same day.
02:15Wow.
02:15So this basil and this lettuce medley was harvested just this morning.
02:19This morning from this greenhouse.
02:21And now it's lunch.
02:22I've been a vegetarian since I was seven, so when I went to art school, the natural progression
02:27was to obviously become a vegan until two years down the road, everyone else started doing
02:32it.
02:33So it really wasn't cool anymore.
02:36I've been feeling a little bit more alert, energetic, awake.
02:40I noticed that I wake up a little bit easier.
02:42I don't need to snooze 17 times.
02:45Awesome.
02:47I spent some time on the phone with a nutritionist.
02:49Since I can't get my iron from meat, I needed sunflower seeds, dried raisins, legumes, dark,
02:56dark leafy greens.
02:58As for the omega-3, can't get it from salmon, so I've been getting it from flax seeds.
03:03Just this morning, I made scrambled tofu.
03:05I put some salt, pepper, onion powder, black beans and onions in there.
03:10It was delicious.
03:11I think that a lot of people are very judgmental about tofu because a lot of people say that
03:16it's tasteless.
03:17But I kind of feel bad for tofu because that's not tofu's job.
03:21Tofu's job is to be a flavoring agent.
03:23It's supposed to absorb the flavors around it.
03:26And that's exactly what it did.
03:27I think the tofu did its job.
03:29I have friends that are vegan.
03:31They love talking about how they're vegan.
03:33Oh my god, have you tried this vegan cheese?
03:35Have you ever put chia seeds in your milk?
03:37Tofurky.
03:38I think I must be a walking contradiction.
03:41I'm a big supporter of animal rights.
03:43I love animals.
03:44I have two dogs in my family.
03:46The thought of animals being hurt or mistreated literally hurts my heart.
03:51Yet, I have fur scarves, leather boots, wool sweaters and down jackets.
03:57I am literally the worst.
04:00A positive note from today, I found a website called veganessentials.com and they have literally
04:05everything you could ever want and need living this lifestyle.
04:08Fragrances, face wash, candles, food, clothing.
04:13I spent more time today on veganessentials.com than I spent on all forms of social media combined.
04:19There's no good vegan hangover food.
04:22So I cheat probably every Saturday morning when I wake up after a Friday night.
04:27It's been an awesome week.
04:28I feel good.
04:29I feel clean.
04:30I don't feel like I've been restricting my diet for five days.
04:33In fact, I actually feel like I've expanded my diet.
04:36I've tried a whole bunch of new things.
04:38I'm not saying that I'm going to become a vegan now.
04:40Honestly, I really enjoy eggs.
04:42I like milk.
04:43I love cheese.
04:44But I certainly will become more conscious of what types of meat I'm eating and where
04:49this meat is coming from.
04:51Doing research for this episode, I watched a whole bunch of documentaries and honestly,
04:54I feel way more educated.
04:56I feel ve-educated.
04:57That's the name of the documentary.
04:59You should go now and watch the documentaries about veganism and then make your own choice.
05:03So what should I try next?
05:04Any ideas?
05:05Comment below.
05:06Let me know.
