Women are the majority of voters in the country. So why haven’t the presidential candidates spent more time talking about the issues that affect us — like equal pay, the rollback of women’s reproductive rights, and sexual assault and violence?

Refinery29 teamed up with Supermajority, a new home for women’s activism, to ask them to do just that. Ahead of Super Tuesday, during which more than a third of all delegates will be allocated, Supermajority co-founder Cecile Richards sat down with each of the top six candidates and asked them questions about their records and plans for improving women’s lives — plus some fun questions to get to know them a bit better. 00:00And you know what else we're going to do Cecile?
00:01What's that?
00:02We're going to significantly increase funding for Planned Parenthood.
00:12Today we're here in Reno, Nevada with Senator Bernie Sanders.
00:16There's one question we really wanted to ask every single candidate.
00:19If there were three things that you've accomplished for women in your career
00:23that you want our viewers to know, what would those be?
00:26Three.
00:27Just three.
00:28In a long career in the House and the Senate, that's like, God, 30 years.
00:34I think I have a 100% pro-choice voting record.
00:37And as a candidate, what I've said is I will never nominate anybody
00:40to the Supreme Court of the federal bench who is not 100% pro-Roe v. Wade.
00:44I was elected mayor of the city of Burlington in 1981.
00:47One of the very first things that we did is start a City of Burlington Council on Women.
00:53And that means really for the first time women came in, had input in policy,
00:58not to mention that we appointed a whole lot of women.
01:00I will also tell you, having worked with you on Planned Parenthood,
01:05we were organizing rallies all over America to say, no, you're not going to cut Planned Parenthood.
01:10All right. Those are three good things. Okay. How does your identity shape your presidential campaign?
01:15I'm Jewish. My father's family was wiped out by Hitler in the Holocaust.
01:20And that made me aware at a very young age what Nazism or white nationalism and racism is about.
01:27Also, I was born into a family that did not have a lot of money.
01:31Living paycheck to paycheck kind of shaped my political views and led me to understand
01:36that there are tens of millions of people who are struggling economically.
01:39What is your top priority for furthering women's reproductive rights once you're president?
01:44Everybody knows that women's reproductive rights under massive assault all across this country,
01:50right-wing Republicans who have this mantra is they believe in small government.
01:55We're going to deregulate corporations. They can pollute all they want because we don't believe in regulation.
02:00Oh, by the way, you're a woman? Well, we're going to tell every woman in America what she can do
02:04with her own body.
02:05That is profound hypocrisy. It disgusts me very much.
02:08We will do everything we can in every way to make sure that that personal choice remains with women and
02:14not the government.
02:15If you could have dinner with one living woman who inspires you, who would it be and why?
02:21Cecile, what are you doing for dinner today?
02:24How's my wife? My wife is a remarkable woman who has impacted my life very significantly.
02:30And you know what? We haven't had dinner too much lately because she's running all over the country and all
02:34that stuff.
02:35So women overall make 82 cents on the dollar compared to white men doing the exact same work.
02:40And, of course, that is much worse for Black women, Native American women, and Latina women.
02:45So what steps will you take as president to make sure that we finally address equal pay?
02:51It is an outrage. We will be as aggressive as we can.
02:54And I think one of the things that we do is make sure that if you and I are doing
02:58the same job, you know what?
02:59You're going to know how much money I make.
03:01And legal protection to say that in this country, women will receive equal pay for equal work.
03:07Okay, what's your backstage mood song? Or maybe even your walkout song? What do they play when you're going on
03:14stage?
03:15Power to the people. And I like, forgive my singing, that is our song and I like that song.
03:22Yeah. Okay, Senator, here's a question that comes up all across the country. And that is, what would you do
03:27about the lack of affordable childcare in America?
03:30We're going to end tax breaks for billionaires. In fact, they're going to stop paying their fair share of taxes.
03:34And we're going to do what countries around the world are doing. High quality, universal, affordable childcare.
03:42Because at the end of the day, if you provide good quality childcare, kids are more likely to do better
03:47in school, do better in life.
03:49There are millions of women potentially viewing this who have not made up their mind in this race.
03:54They may not even have decided whether or not to go vote.
03:56So what's your very best case to make why they should pick you to be president of the United States
04:01of America?
04:02I would ask viewers to take a look at my record. And what my record is about is over 30
04:08years standing up for the rights of working people.
04:11Standing up for the rights of our minority communities. Standing up for the rights of women.
04:16And basically demanding that we have an economy that doesn't have the outrageous level of income and wealth inequality that
04:25we have.
04:26We should guarantee healthcare to every man, woman and child through a Medicare for All single payer program.
04:32I get impressed by the younger generation today. Probably the most progressive generation in modern American history.
04:38We have done rallies where we've had young people who are black and white and Latino, Native American, Asian American.
04:45And they're looking to change this country. They're looking to end racism and sexism and homophobia and xenophobia.
04:52Their eyes are on the future. It is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring sight to me. I love that.
04:57Now, what has historically not been the good news is that young people don't vote in very high numbers.
05:02So, young people who are concerned about climate change. They're concerned about student debt.
05:07They're concerned about all kinds of discrimination that exists in this country.
05:11You must get involved in the political process. Drag your friends kicking and screaming into the polling booth.
05:18If you do in large numbers, not only will we defeat Trump, we're going to transform this country.
05:23Senator Bernie Sanders, thank you so much for joining us.
05:26So, most importantly, of course, women are the majority of this country.
05:29We're a majority of the voters and we can determine the future. So, go vote.
