00:00I'm sorry.
00:03You need to put him down.
00:05You need to put him down.
00:06Hey!
00:11I get drunk, but did you like actually handcuff me
00:16and prove that I was drunk?
00:18I think she's nursing one of the babies right now.
00:20She's five.
00:21Do you hear all my kids?
00:23Mm-hmm, I do.
00:24You don't care?
00:25No, I do care very much.
00:27When a woman is pulled over out of suspicion
00:29that she's driving under the influence,
00:31police are shocked to discover five screaming
00:34and crying children in the backseat of her car.
00:37Hey!
00:39Hey!
00:41Hey!
00:41Soon, the officer's focus shifts away from the woman
00:44and toward finding care for the distressed children.
00:47The scene is one of utter chaos.
00:49That breaks my heart that that precious little baby.
00:52It's April 23rd, 2023,
00:54and it's a calm, cool Monday night
00:57in the peaceful family community of Newberry, Florida.
01:00Yet, when a woman looks out her window,
01:02she finds her backyard aglow in the lights of a car
01:05parked haphazardly in her yard.
01:07The driver of the car, 29-year-old Samantha Fletcher,
01:10stumbles through the grass, aimlessly peering in the windows
01:14and the door of the home.
01:15Startled, the homeowner calls 911 about the suspicious driver.
01:19When officers arrive at the residence,
01:22Samantha has already driven off into the night.
01:25Fortunately, it doesn't take officers long to locate her.
01:28They find Samantha driving down a rural stretch of road
01:31and are only able to stop her after they use their cruiser to box her in.
01:35Where is it at? Do you know where the key is?
01:38Definitely.
01:41Sweetheart, hang on just a minute, okay?
01:45Do you know where the key is?
01:46No.
01:47Okay, can you step out for just a minute?
01:49Let me find the key and let me make sure your kids are okay.
01:51Do you know where you're at?
01:53Yes.
01:54Where are you at?
01:58Do you know where you're at?
01:59Yes.
02:00Where?
02:01On the road back home.
02:03Okay, where is home?
02:04Do you know where home is?
02:05Yes.
02:06Where?
02:08Do you know what your address is?
02:10No.
02:11Which is what?
02:12I don't have to answer.
02:13You don't have to answer?
02:15Okay, do you have any ID?
02:16Tell me where it is.
02:17I don't want you to go in the car for it.
02:20I don't have to answer.
02:22All right, well, hold tight.
02:24Stay right there.
02:24Yeah.
02:26Oh.
02:28It seems Samantha also brought her dog along for this strange drive.
02:32Hey, just hold on.
02:34Just hold on.
02:34You're fine.
02:35I'm right there.
02:35You're fine.
02:37What's your name?
02:39Are you okay?
02:42Samantha isn't eager to talk now, but she'll have plenty to say later.
02:47You guys okay?
02:48Okay.
02:49Are you living in your car?
02:53Can you answer me?
02:55Do you live in this town?
02:57Do you know where you're at?
02:58I don't know where I'm at.
03:00Where's that?
03:01Okay.
03:02Is that where you're at right now?
03:03No.
03:04I need to know if you have somebody that can help you come figure out what's going
03:07on with your kids and with you.
03:09Are you having a medical issue right now?
03:11No.
03:12Okay.
03:12Well, then how come you can't tell me where you're at?
03:17Are you embarrassed by what's going on?
03:20I said not to answer.
03:22Who said not to answer?
03:25I mean, we're just trying to help you, and so I need you to answer because I need to figure
03:32out what's going on and why you have kids in the car.
03:34And is there something medically going on with you?
03:37Is there something else?
03:37No, I didn't want to like drive home.
03:41I feel dumb.
03:44Okay.
03:45Well, don't feel dumb.
03:46We need to figure out what's going on.
03:48His dad was like, it's no big deal.
03:51Take them home.
03:52Okay.
03:53I'm not legal guarding his mom.
03:58Okay.
03:59His dad kind of sucks.
04:03Okay.
04:04Detectives take what little information Samantha has given them and do some searches
04:08to see if they can contact any of the children's fathers to come and collect them.
04:12If they can't, officers will have a big problem on their hands.
04:16Is she still nursing?
04:19I got her husband's phone number.
04:21Mm-hmm.
04:22We're getting ready to go.
04:23Mm-hmm.
04:24I think he's going to do it.
04:39Take note of the open containers in Samantha's front seat.
04:43They definitely don't help her case.
04:45In addition, the officers on scene note that Samantha and her vehicle smell heavily of alcohol.
04:51You're fine.
04:51I just don't want, I want that front door closed.
04:53Oh, I didn't know.
04:54Okay.
04:55Sorry.
04:56Just go back to, stand where you were.
04:57I think she's nursing one of the babies right now.
05:00There's five.
05:01That's what she's working on right now is trying to call someone that she's related to.
05:06What are you, can you set the baby down for me?
05:15What are you doing?
05:22What are you doing?
05:23Can I nurse?
05:25Okay, just, okay, yeah, that's fine.
05:29While nursing an infant refraining from drinking any alcoholic beverages is ideal,
05:33averaging more than one drink per day, which the CDC categorizes as moderate consumption,
05:39can be damaging to an infant's development, growth, and sleep patterns.
05:44I'm sorry.
05:45I'm sorry.
05:46I'm sorry.
05:47I'm sorry.
05:48I'm sorry.
05:48Come over here.
05:49I'm sorry.
05:50Give him the baby.
05:50We got it.
05:51Hey, baby.
05:53Okay, you're going to come over here.
05:55You almost dropped your baby on his head.
05:56Yes, I nearly.
05:57Yeah, I had to catch it.
05:59You grabbed her.
05:59The child she nearly dropped is only six weeks old,
06:03yet Samantha still has the gall to make this next statement.
06:07I didn't do anything at all.
06:09Ma'am, keep your hands on the hood.
06:11That's just, are you just hanging with her now before we walk?
06:16If we do that.
06:17I get what you're saying.
06:19She just can't get around the kids anymore.
06:22Is she like in danger of following herself?
06:25I don't think so.
06:27We can put the baby back in the car seat.
06:30Yeah.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Where can we put the baby back?
06:32In the car seat.
06:35Where it was.
06:36Oh, she's the most precious thing you have.
06:39Hey, you almost dropped the baby.
06:41Yes, I'm trying to grab her.
06:43I'm here and everyone's yelling.
06:45I'm scared.
06:46I'm sorry.
06:48I didn't do anything wrong.
06:51My name is Debbie.
06:52We went to the Alachi County Sheriff's Office.
06:53Some people were worried about you.
06:56And these deputies found you.
06:58And they're a little bit worried about you driving.
07:00There's some exercises that we can put you through.
07:03They're voluntary.
07:04They're to make sure that you're safe to drive.
07:06Would you be willing to do that for us?
07:08Yeah.
07:09Okay.
07:11It's hot.
07:12Can I move?
07:14Oh, you can put your hands right here if you want.
07:18It's not hot right there.
07:21Do you hear all my care?
07:22Mm-hmm.
07:23I do.
07:24You don't care?
07:25No, I do care very much.
07:28We're just trying to make sure you're okay and then we'll get you out of here, okay?
07:32All right.
07:33Come stand right here for me.
07:37And I would like you to turn face this way.
07:40Face me.
07:42The officer explains to Samantha that they're going to run through a few exercises that will
07:47help confirm or deny that she's intoxicated.
07:50However, Samantha seems to be worried about something else entirely.
07:53the camera on the officer's chest.
07:57Is that on?
07:59I want you to follow this with your eyes, okay?
08:02Back up just a little bit.
08:03Right there.
08:08Watch out, honey.
08:09Careful.
08:10Put your arms back down by your side for me.
08:13I'm down by your side, honey.
08:16The sheet officers are marking here is the Drug and Alcohol Influence Report,
08:20which can be used to support the officer's claim that Samantha is intoxicated,
08:24even if she refuses a blood, breath, or urine test.
08:27As you can see, Samantha didn't exactly pass it.
08:31All right, ma'am.
08:32The next one is going to be the walk and turn, okay?
08:35What I want you to do is I want you to place your left foot on the...
08:38Watch me.
08:38I want you to place your left foot on the line.
08:41I want to place your right foot on the line ahead of your left foot
08:44with the heel of the right foot against the toe of the left foot, okay?
08:47Mm-hmm.
08:48Place your arms down at your side, like so.
08:51Okay.
08:52Keep this position until I tell you to begin.
08:54Do you understand?
08:55Yeah.
08:56Okay.
08:56Can you look at me?
08:58There's two deputies back there.
09:00No, but can you look at me?
09:01Ma'am, we've got two deputies back there that are taking as...
09:04I can see them from where I'm standing, honey.
09:07The deputies back there are taking as good of care of them
09:09as they can be taken care of.
09:10Okay.
09:11Okay.
09:11All right, go ahead and like I had you before,
09:13just put your toes and your heels together like this.
09:16I'm saying they are fine.
09:17I know.
09:18I just...
09:18I can't...
09:19You can't...
09:20You don't want to do this?
09:21No, I do.
09:22I just...
09:23Do you want to do these exercises?
09:25I do.
09:26I just...
09:26I'm sorry.
09:27Okay.
09:28Okay.
09:28Don't start walking until I tell you to.
09:30I just want you to get with your right foot in front of your left foot.
09:33Like this.
09:33Look at...
09:34Look at how I'm standing.
09:35No, I know.
09:35I'm...
09:35I'm missing the...
09:36Just stand just like this.
09:37Let me see.
09:43I can't.
09:44I'm...
09:44You can't?
09:45No, I missed it up.
09:46I'm sorry.
09:47Are you...
09:47Do you want to keep trying or do you want to move on?
09:49No, it's okay.
09:50I don't know what that means.
09:52I missed it up.
09:53Do you want to keep trying this or move on?
09:55I can move on.
09:56I'm sorry.
09:57I'm sorry.
09:58Officers are forced to mark stopped and cannot perform the exercise
10:02on the alcohol drug influence report.
10:05It's certainly not looking good for Samantha or her kids.
10:08This is our last one called the one leg stand.
10:11The officer then instructs Samantha on the next test.
10:15Do you understand the instructions?
10:16Yes, sir.
10:17You may begin.
10:21Are you going to do the exercise?
10:23I'm fine.
10:23Because if you say you can't and then you start again,
10:25you're confusing me a little bit.
10:27Are you going to do it or no?
10:28I'm fine.
10:30Well, you said you can't,
10:31so I'm just trying to make sure that you're going to do it.
10:33I'm fine.
10:34Okay.
10:35This test also proves to be a lost cause.
10:39We're going to do one last one.
10:40Close your eyes and tilt your head back.
10:43Put your arms out like an airplane.
10:45Count as high as you can until I tell you to stop.
10:53She doesn't want to take a breath test,
10:55which is a shame because if she blew up,
10:57I would charge her with the enhancement.
10:59Often if the subject's BAC is a certain level and there are children in the car,
11:03a DUI charge itself could be enhanced to a felony of some sort.
11:07Have you ever been in trouble before?
11:10No.
11:11I'm going to read you some stuff as soon as we get you sat down, okay?
11:15But this actually isn't Samantha's first time receiving her Miranda rights,
11:19despite her claim.
11:20In 2014, when Samantha was just 21, she was arrested for a DUI.
11:25Though this is her second time, she still seems to struggle to understand exactly what's happening.
11:31So, like, what am I being charged with?
11:34DUI.
11:34And then...
11:36DUI.
11:37Can I get, like, let go tonight or no?
11:40You'll...
11:40We'll talk about that again in just a second.
11:43It seems that after officers leave Samantha alone, it all finally starts to sink in.
11:52Hey!
12:09Can I take a test?
12:11Yeah, we...
12:11You can when we get to the jail.
12:13Can I do it now?
12:14No, we have to do it at the jail.
12:15That's what the law says.
12:17With that, the officer takes Samantha to jail.
12:19On the way, her strange comments only grow more nonsensical.
12:24So, at what point do you have your camera on?
12:27I have it on right now.
12:28It is?
12:29No, I actually can.
12:32You have it on right now?
12:34Yeah, I can.
12:35You had it on all night, bud.
12:38So, can I call my husband now, or y'all won't let me?
12:47Oh, yeah, y'all like to control that, don't you?
12:51So, are y'all dropping me off to the jail?
12:57Thanks, Bubba.
12:58Is anyone coming to get my kids?
13:01Yeah, they're going to probably go to DCF.
13:03Okay, I'll have a message to Charlie at the station.
13:06Can you call my husband?
13:08We're trying to, but it's fun going straight to Bush.
13:10The lieutenant that was here, the female lieutenant,
13:13she said she's going to keep trying to call him, okay?
13:16That means nothing.
13:18Can you, like, let me help you call him?
13:21No, ma'am.
13:23Oh, okay, thanks, bud.
13:26Samantha's sarcastic, bitter attitude wanes for just a moment
13:29when the severity of the Department of Children and Family Services getting involved hits her.
13:34Can I please tell them goodbye?
13:37Please, please, please, please.
13:40I don't want your kids to leave.
13:43Well, you did this, so.
13:45You did.
13:48I did not tell you to get in that car.
13:51I didn't.
13:53I did it drunk, but did you, like, actually handcuff me and prove that I was drunk?
14:03Did you?
14:09Or do you block it out on your camera?
14:14Are you sure?
14:17Can't wait to see that, bud.
14:19It's safe to say Samantha would probably be comfortable going her whole life without
14:23seeing the officers' footage. Back at the scene, officers and deputies scramble to figure out
14:28what to do with their children.
14:30You might just want me to see them.
14:32Sucks, but that breaks my heart that that precious little baby.
14:37Instead of resorting to calling DCFS, some of the dedicated officers stayed with the children
14:42for over four hours, caring for them and feeding them as they waited for a guardian to arrive.
14:48And, fortunately, a family member took the children into their care.
14:52Upon arriving at the jail, Samantha Fletcher refused to take a breath test to measure her
14:57blood alcohol content. Ultimately, she was charged with driving under the influence and child neglect.
15:03And that's all, there are a lot of interpretation to enjoy this, namely Wanders Act and the
