00:00They need A.J. Ewing.
00:01Of course.
00:01So is this a desperate move by the Mets?
00:03I mean, it's not.
00:04I just feel bad for A.J. Ewing in a sense because we know he's a fantastic athlete.
00:09He can play everywhere.
00:11I think he probably was a shortstop coming up.
00:13Played second base.
00:14But he plays second base.
00:15He plays all the outfield positions.
00:18I know center field being the primary one.
00:20But it's almost as if getting caught up when this team is the worst record-wise team in baseball who
00:29don't hit even your star players.
00:31He's being looked at as like the savior.
00:34And it's a lot of pressure for a 20, maybe 21-year-old kid.
00:4021 years old, yes.
00:40It's just so much that's going to be put towards him.
00:44And if he falters, then it's like you're going to get sent back down.
00:49And I don't think it's going to crush him.
00:50But it just feels like the Mets fan is going to be disappointed in their first view of him.
00:55Yeah, I think the Mets right now are at a desperation point of the season.
00:58They're 10 games under .500.
00:59And like we talked about with the Yankees, they're 25% of the way through the season.
01:03This is no longer early.
01:04It's no longer out to small sample size.
01:06A quarter of the way through the season, they're on pace to lose 100 games.
01:09They're 10 games under .500.
01:10And their offense sucks.
01:12So the Mets have, in my opinion...
01:14It's a 60-win team right now.
01:17That's the way they're playing.
01:18That's bad.
01:19So when you're bad at this state of the season, you have a handful of choices.
01:23Choice number one, fire your manager.
01:25The Mets have clearly decided not to do that.
01:27We've called for that.
01:28We've talked ad nauseum about that.
01:30The Phillies did it.
01:31It's worked for them.
01:32The Mets aren't doing it.
01:33But that's option number one.
01:34Well, the Phillies had a guy in place already.
01:36And they also have more talent, which I'll admit.
01:39Situations are different.
01:39I'm just pointing out that that's an option.
01:41Change the manager.
01:42Option number two is do nothing.
01:44Fiddle your fingers and say, I hope things will get better.
01:46Option number three is to trade for somebody.
01:49That is very unrealistic in the middle of May.
01:51Guys are just not being traded.
01:52I know Luis Arise, a couple of years ago, was traded very early in the season.
01:56That doesn't happen often.
01:58And then the last option is to call up an infusion of youth and try to spark the team.
02:03We brought up what the Yankees did many years ago.
02:05It was 21 years ago, 2005, when they called up Robinson Cano and Chen Ming Wong.
02:11Can you get the exact date on when they made that call, Sean, out of curiosity?
02:14Yeah, it was last week, but I'll get it.
02:16I mean, it was last week.
02:17We did this on the air that it was the anniversary.
02:19I know.
02:19I can't remember the date.
02:20I apologize.
02:21Oh, so you're saying it was last week.
02:23I got you.
02:23So the Yankees did that.
02:25They called up Chen Ming Wong.
02:27They called up Robbie Cano.
02:28And by God, it worked.
02:29May 3rd.
02:30May 3rd.
02:31So the Mets were doing this on May 11th, May 12th.
02:33The other option is to call up youth.
02:36A.J. Ewing is the perfect mix of he's exactly what they need because he's hitting the car
02:42over the ball.
02:42He also impacts all aspects of the sport.
02:45He's in mid-cover.
02:46Sounded like car.
02:47Car over the ball.
02:49Save it for Friday.
02:51He's also an elite-level defender.
02:53Yep.
02:54And he can run and steal bases and puts bat on ball.
02:56So he can impact the game in a lot of ways.
02:58He is the spark plug that, in theory, they need.
03:01As long as he hits on this level, which is easier said than done, as we're seeing with
03:07Spencer Jones.
03:07It feels easy because you crush AAA.
03:11But AAA pitching is not major league pitching.
03:13But how do you know when a guy is ready?
03:15You don't.
03:15You just got to give him a chance.
03:17That's the problem.
03:17It's not like A.J. Ewing is sitting 257 and they're trying to convince themselves he's
03:23ready.
03:23Like, he went down to AAA in a very small sample size, I admit.
03:26And he's torn the cover off the ball.
03:29There you go.
03:31Like, he's performed.
03:32Right.
03:32And so, I think two things are true.
03:34I think the Mets are desperate.
03:35But I also think the kid has earned it.
03:37And as a Mets fan, I'm very excited that they made this decision.
03:39Because what else are you going to do?
03:41You're going to sit there and play Austin Slater every other day?
03:43And Tyrone Taylor?
