00:01I'm here at the courthouse in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, where Justice Lincoln Crowley
00:07just sentenced 39-year-old Clinton Gordon Sutcliffe to life behind bars for the murder
00:12of Dale Aaron McKenna.
00:14Over the six-day murder trial, a jury heard the details of a fatal car chase along a dark
00:20country road in the middle of the night on Queensland's Western Downs almost three years
00:25ago.
00:25Crown Prosecutor Samantha O'Rourke told the court how jealousy was at the centre of
00:30this case, as Mr Sutcliffe had just found out Mr McKenna was seeing his former on-again,
00:36off-again girlfriend, then 20-year-old Miss Shakira Stewart.
00:40The jury heard phone calls while Mr Sutcliffe was in prison for an unrelated matter.
00:45They heard him say that he was going to kill Mr McKenna and he was a dead man once he
00:50got
00:50out.
00:5111 witnesses throughout the trial detailed the moments in which Mr Sutcliffe pursued Mr
00:57McKenna down Tara Cogan Road in the middle of the night at some stages reaching up to 180
01:03kilometres per hour before Mr McKenna's car flipped and he later died from his injuries.
01:09Yesterday, the jury unanimously found Mr Sutcliffe guilty of murder.
01:13Today in the sentencing hearing, the court heard 10 emotional victim impact statements in which
01:19Mr McKenna's family spoke of the devastation and heartbreak they'd felt at the hands of
01:25Mr Sutcliffe.
01:26They described Mr McKenna as a kind and caring man who loved his children, horses and camp drafting.
01:32As a family, we've achieved something.
01:38We've took him out of society for the foreseeable future.
01:43So that's one thing but nothing is ever going to bring Dale back.
01:48So, you know, we've achieved what we can achieve but we can never achieve what we would love to achieve.
