00:04oh no come on now I do worry that oh now there's another one right totty hey look
00:14I don't know look what's going on trouble what's going on Roy is that you ah have attracted them
00:21both yeah they're not even paying any attention to me and I paid for both of them I'm always a
00:26great believer that if a dog runs up to someone they're a really nice person or just running
00:31away from a robbery and we're off trawling Britain's sheds this is absolutely unbelievable for the most
00:45intriguing I have never ever seen one of these the most exciting oh now that is a naughty car
00:55the most surprising classic cars it is very you I love it we're gonna buy them fix them up no
01:05and sell them for a tidy profit nice little earner hey this is shed and buried classic cars
01:18we're off to Wiltshire on our latest search for a classic car we're going to meet a chap called
01:25Denny now Denny has a penchant for uh British classics does he yeah sort of he's gonna like you and
01:33me
01:33then yeah so mostly mostly 50s and 60s British classics a smattering of 70s and maybe a little
01:39sprinkle of earlier stuff roots group stuff roots group we're talking Sunbeam Singer Hillman Humber okay
01:48so look we're going to Wiltshire for some Britishers I've looked at the photographs and I couldn't quite
01:54see into the depths of his sheds and his sheds look large do they yeah okay mate all right hey
02:02look as far
02:03as I'm concerned it'd be quite fun yeah this is going to be good whether we find something rootsy or
02:10cutesy who knows but Denny's place in Wiltshire here we come Denny I'm really excited about this
02:20what's your poison it started about 40 years ago when I got into Sunbeam Reaper convertibles
02:26him and minxes that's English stuff yeah what was it about the roots group stuff that attracted you
02:32the word I think of is cute okay minxes rapiers are cute cars is everything for sale well quite a
02:40lot
02:40but not everything some have a lot of sentimental value and it just would be hard to wrench away
02:45from me okay other ones I just feel happier to let them go what we'll do is we'll have a
02:49little
02:49rummage and then as always hopefully we'll have a haggle at the end sure yeah brilliant great stuff
02:54all right well look we'll venture in all right yeah you'll call me if you need me thank you so
03:00much
03:00okay so here we go another treasure trove of British cars oh that's red leather but this time
03:08no Austen's or Morris's in sight absolutely mint instead we'll start with a gorgeous rover p4 that
03:18might be uh beyond our means what would you mean by that they're lovely things but one that's just
03:24been retrimmed it means that well it's how much for something like that go for I think eight maybe
03:32nine ten sort of maybe ten ish kind of and they are a beautiful place to be inside there you've
03:39got
03:39you've got lots of leather you've got wood you've got chrome it's conducive to uh to a good long
03:47driving experience that's the first thing of interest next as Denny promised it's a Hillman the first of
03:57his roots group classics oh you little minx oh is it it is yeah an early minx the Hillman minx
04:04is one
04:05of the most long-lived models in British car history released in 1931 as a low-cost family saloon it
04:12went
04:12through many different variations in its 40-year life this one looks late 30s can you imagine somebody
04:21in the boardroom saying what should we call our car what cheeky little minx yeah but now obviously
04:29uh that's part of history it is yeah that interior is beautiful it is take a look at that I
04:36think
04:36this probably has been re-upholstered so it's not the original and it's from that era that people have
04:44just forgotten now I know people go for vintage stuff which is pre-1934 generally but these in
04:51the middle in the middle lands they don't like them nobody likes a midland should we give it a roof
04:55chop and put some big wheels on it a v8 in it I need to educate you here why don't
05:01you just turn around
05:03not all the way that's it there we go right now what's that from minx to super minx okay but
05:12this
05:12is post-war yes this is so this is 1960s we're now right at the point where the roots group
05:20is well
05:21should we say dabbling in americana a little bit so you've got the fins out the back there wait a
05:26minute
05:27so roots group were what hillman turned into but no the roots group owned a number of car brands so
05:35hillman singer sunbeam humber as well so all of those were all roots group anyway so this now
05:45because I can read it is a super meat that's right yeah right now I think these are great the
05:51hood has
05:52seen better days but uh would you just hold that second yeah sure just let me have a quick look
06:01anything underneath yeah it's not bad news all right what I will say is most of the structure
06:06under there is good yeah maybe a little bit of a little bit of a job in the center of
06:11the cruciform
06:12there a minx is renowned for a little bit of rusty yeah so we'd have to do some dealing with
06:18the bonnet
06:19now possibly so but you know it's all part of its charm all right when things get a little bit
06:24older
06:25they get sort of pockmarked and creased and grazed and they don't look as lovely as they once did
06:31are you having a go no you'll think you might be now is that one younger
06:40denny's slightly newer kids on the block include a sunbeam rapier
06:44now this is a lovely car yeah but what we've got a little bit crispiness around the sills
06:51and the successor to the p4 the rover p5 are you feeling diplomatic no I've never felt diplomatic
07:00no I don't suppose you do but this was your diplomat's special transport of the 1970s
07:06yeah oh my gosh look there's loads of cars with stuff on them yeah two volvo p1800s
07:15made famous by roger moore in his tv series the saint the volvo p1800 was one of the most
07:22successful scandy cars of the early 1960s as well as the two-door model there was a hatchback or
07:30shooting brake it's in this state and they have very long legs on a motorway they are a real great
07:38cruiser I used to drive one of these on a regular basis this color as well did you yeah I
07:43tell you
07:44what they're really good for as well storing stuff they are yeah yeah well it's got the longer roof
07:49you've got a bit more of a shelf denny come in here now look fuzz is eulogizing about these 1800s
07:55has it got the the sort of ornate jensen style cowhorn bumpers they are at the back of the shed
08:01so it's
08:01probably a jensen built one so yeah a west bromwich special which means that it's quite a survivor
08:08actually so why do you love these denny my dad when we were kids had a volvo amazon estate so
08:15that
08:15got me into volvos we had a lovely cream one with red interior yeah and then later on I sort
08:22of started
08:22looking around in like the 1800s and that was it yeah that was it so I thought one estate one
08:27saloon
08:27yeah when did this last run 15 years ago I'd say okay yeah all right recent then when I brought
08:33it
08:33from a brief previous shed and brought it to this one oh right okay so it ran because you drove
08:38it in
08:38here it ran yeah yeah great denny thank you so much now I know there's one more shed to look
08:42at
08:43come on then fuzzer let's go and have a look denny's final shed it's another trip back in time
08:49to the era of the classic British saloon these look are ready for action okay so look this is a
08:57singer yeah now this is a car named after you after your proportions and the gazelle
09:07released in 1956 the singer gazelle was billed as the luxury end of the roots groups model range
09:14with a high spec interior and snappy performance these are accomplished they've got decent engines
09:21they're good family saloons solid this one looks worse than I think it is I think it's a lovely period
09:29piece there are a couple more p-series rovers in here but I think we've seen enough yeah I just
09:36want
09:36to do a deal I'm really excited yeah okay so look in here we've got the gazelle yeah right in
09:41the other
09:41shed yeah the pre-war minx pre-war minxie and then there's the super duper minx in red yeah I
09:48like
09:48that that's a convertible what else we got there was the sunbeam rapier it's a little bit crispy a
09:55little bit crispy underneath should we go see yeah come on then okay where should we start do you
10:10think do you know there was the sunbeam rapier with the red flash needs a bit more work though
10:16right that's heartish okay um so look your little singer tell me about that the gazelle the gazelle
10:23yeah I mean I'm happier in a way for you to relieve me of that oh really okay less emotional
10:28connection for some reason all right I think we're talking under four ish we're talking sort of three
10:34six ish okay only 26,000 miles what from you yes wowie that's all right um super minx in red
10:42yes
10:42yeah I think okay okay there's the volvos either of those for sale no I can tell no they're more
10:52expensive cars they're up in the teens really just because of what they are no absolutely but
10:57also he inhaled just then yeah yeah well I know you know I know I know you're not going to
11:02get a
11:02good if someone inhales you don't get a good deal no no that's true no it's not okay what about
11:07can
11:07I just steam in you can yeah three two for the singer
11:25we're in Wiltshire with Denny in his eclectic collection of classic British and Swedish cars
11:31we've bid three thousand two hundred or a singer gazelle but he wants three thousand six why don't
11:40we meet in the middle at three and a half yeah I mean you could go for the singer and
11:47not the song
11:48three and a half come on well yeah okay yeah I like okay there we are fantastic yeah
11:58two days later back at the shed we show off the not-so-goods
12:07do you like me antelope gazelle what gazelle the singer like a sewing machine is it the same thing no
12:15oh don't be stupid the singer sewing machine uh company was uh originated in the United States
12:21whereas this well he came from Coventry I bought this for two reasons right uh one it was cheap
12:29uh what was the other one what was the other reason it was closest to the door yeah I personally
12:34think that actually it's done what's it 28 000 miles or something it's supposed to have done but I've been
12:40looking at this or is it 128 I think it might be 128 000 miles because the driver's seat is
12:46really
12:47I was going to say the same fuzz that is tattered that doesn't happen in 26 000 miles and can
12:53I put
12:54can I point out the plethora of blue paints at the front I think at some point this may have
13:02had a
13:02little bit of a shunt because also the front wings don't quite fit and the bonnet look the bonnet
13:08it's a bit like you know you know rod hull and emu when emu did that sort of like thing
13:12where he
13:13pulled his beak up that's like that yeah I can't see any dents in it apart from those I thought
13:20we
13:20could turn this we could just give it a polish spqr exactly let's let's see what we can do it
13:27looks so
13:27much better with a nice polish of course it will yeah you know once guy and you have polished it
13:32it will be
13:33great so it's rough on the outside but what about the mechanicals let's see if we can get it started
13:42shall we let's see if it's got an engine oh don't be like that honestly you lot are just all
13:46gang up
13:47on me for no reason thank you very much it looks quite tidy the air filters off yeah so something's
13:56going on here isn't it um should we just turn it over to see if we can yeah let's turn
14:00it over okay
14:02are you ready give it a go
14:06and again
14:10okay okay so no first time starter and even with a squirt of easy start it's not happy
14:19hold on what i think that the pump's not working i think there's probably some dirt underneath one of
14:26the valves probably yeah shall we put a different fuel supply on yeah and see if we can get get
14:32the
14:33fuel to to go through via gravity and perhaps dislodge anything in there can i just add to this
14:38conversation yeah i've had a rummage in the dash there's a lovely owner's book very lovely and there
14:44is a workshop manual now weirdly the pages that have been ripped out and placed on the top yeah
14:49our fuel system oh there we are let's hope the joke is not on us
14:59there we go hang up on there fuzz connects up the dummy tank
15:07but there's no instant joy okay at all no so we've got a duff pump yeah we've got a duff
15:15pump so
15:15we need to take that off and clean it out and try and coax it back to life back to
15:20life yeah
15:22next fuzz de-rigs the pump but there's nothing obvious wrong with it
15:29it sounds like it's making the right the right noises this is this is the input if i put my
15:34finger over
15:34there then operate it it gets to a point where maybe the little arm wasn't located correctly in
15:42the engine fuzz yeah i think that might be the case so let's just put the fuel supply on there
15:46and see if we can uh okay to suck it up yes it's working it's working it's working it's coming
15:55out
15:55that's great works perfect it might just be that it was uh assembled wrongly
16:03back on goes the remote tank and fuzz does the honors there we go
16:11there we are sounds sounds lovely it does doesn't it not roughly at all i told you it'd be beautiful
16:18i told you let's go for a test drive okay well we'll connect up the fuel system and make sure
16:24that it draws in fuel from the tank fuzz re-plums the pump and de-rigs the temporary tank
16:37struggling a bit but without the external tank the fuel just ain't flowing
16:43there we go it's right up now is it okay oh oh dear what happened there suddenly the pump filled
16:54up and then it just stopped it's not enough though is it no i think we need to get an
16:58airline on it
16:59yeah yeah let's give it a go the other possibility is that a fuel pipe is blocked
17:06out comes the air compressor and an improvised bung right so i've got some rag around here
17:13just going to press it against here i'm going to blow some air through
17:23nothing yet
17:27yes that took a little while okay i think the pipe might be
17:31quite a small diameter pipe but let's see if we can connect it up again and see if we get
17:37any
17:37action out of it all right
17:41fuzz reconnects the pipe work and then starts it up again
17:48and this time it sounds happier
17:53i think we might be okay we might have got away with it you reckon yeah so um but if
17:58it does play up
17:59again we might have to replace the fuel pump or at least rebuild it yeah so uh we'll have to
18:05take a
18:05take a view on that in the meantime let's put the filter back on and uh perhaps have a little
18:11test
18:12yeah definitely on goes the air filter
18:18and clunk goes the bonnet god blimey that reminds me of a 1960s children's tv show what the clangers
18:30i'm bagsy yeah i'm a passenger oh no i'll drive it you drive yeah okay me and skill in the
18:35back
18:35all right yeah let's go in we go i've got to tell you that sounds smooth it does sound smooth
18:45and off we go
18:49we're going up second gear look fuzzy okay let's try this really nice
18:54sorry you lot well it's a driver's car yeah it is a driver's car it's not it's not an admirer's
19:03car is it
19:07the gazelle was a classic mid-range model more upmarket than a hillman not so aspirational as a sunbeam
19:16it's quite petty isn't it yeah it is really do you think that mileage could be original because it
19:21doesn't rattle or smoke at all well i think most of the things that did rattle have fallen off
19:33that's a successful first little spin happy i think it's lovely yeah it will be all right i'm
19:39glad i'm inside it and can't see the outside yeah that's right that's the great thing about this
19:44once you're in here yeah it's rather charming that's right let's just try a wiggle spin on the
19:49driveway and embrace the outside okay can we okay by cleaning it and making it lovely okay
20:00in the wild gazelles keep comfortable and parasite free through a mixture of social
20:06licking and dust bathing i think they've gone for the latter on this one
20:15we could be ready for the jet wash in a minute i think so yeah
20:18do you think do you want to get it revved up
20:22prior to our visit this gazelle has spent lord knows how many years on denny's farm
20:28so there's a lot of crime to banish oh yeah that's a good idea get in there mate
20:35be careful though it might snap it might come up straight through the spot
20:45joking aside the washing is only stage one polishing has got to come next
20:53it needs a little bit of a cut on it doesn't it we should get guy to polish it because
20:58he's really
20:59good yeah that's a good idea isn't he very good he is very good at this sort of thing there's
21:04one
21:04thing about this gazelle though what it is living up to its name because it was a little deer
21:14so we've got our gazelle running and i've got to admit looking a bit better
21:19it'll definitely benefit from some skin polish but whether we'll ever get our three and a half grand
21:25back remains to be seen
21:41we've got our singer gazelle running and riding but it still needs work before we try to sell it
21:51then me and assistant rob encounter a close relative
22:01where'd this come from i thought you'd be happy
22:04why would we be happy basically you've made a mistake once so you've decided to make the same
22:10mistake again so that it looks like you've done it on all right okay so hang on before
22:14i can tell you're gonna start this is utter madness no because if you make a mistake yes
22:22if you don't learn from it yes you're technically mad you've gone and bought what looks roughly the
22:27same maybe a bit older it's more or less more i know that's a hillman and this is a singer
22:32but it's
22:33more or less the same car and you're expecting a different result firstly i don't believe that i made
22:38a mistake with the singer and also if i did it's your fault as well me and rob uh were
22:44summoned
22:44by my mate james who works in the pub and he says i've had this for about 15 years do
22:51you want it
22:52you've been down the pub and bought a car yeah that is not the best place to buy is it
22:57fuzz
22:57the only thing is you won't have been drunk is the only thing no no i was sober as a
23:02judge obviously
23:02really nice inside it is i like this better than i like this i think i agree yeah probably that's
23:08better condition all right okay look it doesn't run okay it has been in his garden for 15 years or
23:14in
23:14his garage i hadn't seen it but apart from the first i'll give you 500 quid for it he goes
23:19cool
23:19okay mate okay so i gave him 500 smash little monkey there yeah and um me and rob went to
23:25pick
23:26it up obviously that's why i haven't been around fiddling with that oh can i take a look under the
23:30bonnet of course you can i think for 500 quid that does look all right i thought you're gonna say
23:34you paid 1800 no i think it's 500 quid is 500 quid i think it's all right yeah
23:44by the mid 60s the hillman minx was the slightly poorer relation of the gazelle
23:50basically the same car with lower spec trim and a different badge and grille 15 years in the garage
23:57has done this one no favors do the brakes work ah do the brakes work rob not at all does
24:05the clutch work
24:06clutch no throttle throttle i haven't tried anything now we have okay somebody's been having a fiddle with
24:11this all right so i think we need to continue with the fiddle to fiddle and fiddle we do yeah
24:20okay let's
24:21try it on easy start let's uh switch on the ignition like the gazelle the engine will run on easy
24:27start yes yes oh listen to that straight away 15 years but again there's a blockage somewhere in
24:37the fuel system the pump has pumped nothing we fetch the compressor and give it a blast ready yeah okay
24:46here it comes blocks isn't it yeah absolutely nothing happening this end right so fuzz goes down under
24:54cuts the pipe that comes out of the tank and then uses a wire to unblock it oh i'm right
25:00up there now
25:02god blimey i could have been a surgeon you know i could carumba the blockage is vanquished
25:11so what i need to do now is bridge the gap uh in the bit of fuel pipe that i've
25:15removed
25:17and then we can try again see if we can get it to get it to run on some actual
25:23petrol this time
25:2510 minutes later we're ready for a second attempt ignition on starts it up contact start
25:37it's amazing yeah smooth as simple honest yeah that's running on fuel yeah yes
25:47we're on a roll and when skid uses a blow torch to loosen the clutch cylinder we've got a movable
25:53clutch
25:53oh there we are fantastic yeah it works fantastic we could go for test drive it is a bit of
26:00a squeeze
26:00with rob in the back but off we go this is going rather nicely pretty smooth i'm a bit scared
26:06about
26:06what gear am i in first oh how smooth is that hey that was amazing
26:16the foot brake doesn't work but the handbrake might try the brakes now
26:23is there nothing on the pedal does it go to the no no it just goes right to the floor
26:28i'll tell you
26:28what the gearbox is uh sawed itself out the gearbox is sweet man i like this car so do i
26:37it tries
26:38really nicely i'll try for third i like the layout as well i like the bench seat there's third yeah
26:44all strong isn't it it's beautiful fourth yeah this isn't a bad little car you know this is nice
26:52500 quid it's an absolute bargain it's just amazing there you are no synchro needed just beautifully
27:01hang on oh when this has got brakes it's gonna be pucker right okay well i know what my next
27:09job is
27:10then back at base we get out the blow torch again and heat up the brake master cylinder
27:17not getting any resistance at the moment not yet no it's moving up and down so it's doing something
27:21being shushed now at first nothing happens but after a bit of spannering i'm definitely getting
27:28something now yeah the brakes are working yeah i'm pulling it forward and you're stopping the car move
27:35the brakes are working hey i think everything's fixed it's charging it's ticking over the brakes
27:42are fixed yeah it just needs some new tires that is a proper result this car you know mate honestly
27:47i think you did really well no i know yeah thank you so very very
27:53next day the great work continues as we make a determined effort to clean up both cars
28:00alan focuses on the minx look at that skid gives the gazelle a mop and a moan
28:06i am trying to t-cut this car but the problem i've got is every car i've t-cut before
28:12has actually had paint on it you can't t-cut body work and fuzz preps the wheels for the new
28:20tires
28:20which should be turning up shortly look at that it's been off the road for a while
28:27i meanwhile are back on rattle can duty touching up the minx's wheels this is what's called in the
28:33trade wafting just go around the rim like that but when doogle arrives the new tires will be on it
28:42and it'll look lovely half an hour later doogle and his assistant adam are here with some very
28:49special tires for our hillman minx pirelli skin tomatoes or cinturato oh right okay i like those
28:55very distinctive tread pattern on those 1952 so what year is that car that one is about 57 58 oh
29:02your
29:02bobby dazzle perfect oh maybe maybe 59 so if you could afford them in the day yeah it was like
29:07the
29:08coolest upgrade you could do to your car what was that radials well radials and particularly
29:12pirelli cinturato developed in the early 50s the cinturato was according to pirelli's advertising
29:21so safe you could drive with your eyes closed adam starts by using a portable jig to remove the old
29:28tires there's the bead seat the tire sits on there and there it is on the other side and then
29:35this is
29:35the bead of the tire and then that is the well of the tire so when adam puts the tire
29:42lever in and
29:42pulls the the tire over the rim he's pulling the other side of the bead into the well here to
29:48enable
29:48the tire to go over the rim then he puts on a brand new tire and it's corresponding inner tube
29:55modern cars don't use inner tubes modern tires have got lower profiles the flex in the sidewall
30:02is in a smaller area of the tire so it's not suited to inner tubes but when you're on a
30:07tall profile
30:08tire and your wheel isn't suited to running without an inner tube you need to put a tube in back
30:14in the
30:15day these tires were the favorites of ferrari and maserati and thinking about two world famous
30:21performance cars has given me an idea you've got to ask yourself when you're looking at two virtually
30:27identical cars which one's the fastest depends who's driving it well very true so i thought we would
30:36return to that lovely little track in stand lake yeah little time trial well i was thinking more
30:43banger racing that track but we're not going to do that we're just going to race each other and see
30:49who's quickest yeah and we can pick who goes in what with the power of those cars surely the weight
30:57of
30:57the driver is going to be utterly critical i'm not going with him i guess
31:05in the final stage adam balances the wheels
31:11then once fuzz has refitted them and skidders polish to set a new hubcaps down goes the car
31:18and everything goes back in position dougal your tires look amazing that looks fantastic
31:26doesn't it what a transformation hey indeed do you know what i really genuinely think seeing as
31:31that's been in a hedge for 15 years yeah i don't think that's bad do you i think it's fantastic
31:37mate
31:37this one i think we're quids in that one on the other hand is a depreciating asset that's quids out
31:43yeah i think that's correct yeah i think that's all right but hey which one is the fastest that's
31:48what we need to know so both cars are looking better and with its new boots the minx is particularly
31:55smart which one though will be the fastest and equally important will they both make the 10 miles to the
32:18racetrack two weeks ago we found a singer gazelle in a shed in wiltshire we fettled it cleaned it
32:29and founded a mate today the time has come to take them both racing okay so are they going to
32:39make
32:39it to the track well that's the first test isn't it really it's sedately yeah i think what could go
32:46wrong okay well they've got fuel in them yeah new tires the brakes work do they yeah oh result what
32:52on
32:53both of them i believe so yeah oh that's great so look are you two going in the um antelope
32:58we can
32:58do can't we yeah we are we know we're quite really we can nurture it we can nurture it okay
33:02nurture
33:03uh right i'll drive the uh oh no you're like i can tell in his eyes no it needs a
33:08bit of
33:08simplicity it does need a bit of mechanical sympathy on the gear change yeah there's a little there's a
33:12little bit of a problem with the uh with the clutch shall we lead then we'll go are we leading
33:16do
33:16you know the way no okay let's go let's go and away we go
33:30do you realize this is a momentous occasion what because this is going to be the first time
33:37that this car has been out on the open road oh yeah for well 15 years yeah at least that
33:46it's just over 10 miles from base to stand lake arena touchwood we'll get there
33:55holding up the rear alan and skid are looking at the home in the gazelle
34:03it's rather pleasant isn't it i think it's delightful
34:11until this happens
34:26well i think we should pull the body and we all have to pull in what what's happening
34:32we've got a fuel blockage i think so okay we've blown the fuel to fuel back through this way but
34:37now
34:37i'm going to put some pressure in this side right and if al cranks then hopefully the pump will pick
34:42up
34:42okay and uh we'll get and do its thing some action we'll stand here and look pretty yeah looking
34:48okay we're ready
34:56what do we live to fight another day we're good to go guys you're really good isn't it yeah yeah
35:02let's go
35:09once again fuzz has been able to blow through the blockage and the rest of the journey is thankfully
35:15uneventful
35:1810 minutes and five miles later we reach our goal the stand lake arena only for the gazelle to conk
35:26out
35:26yet again
35:30it was going really well until it stopped
35:34fuzz reattaches the compressor first to the front
35:41and then to the tank sounds like you old age and blockage
35:45yeah until finally yes yes yes yes fuzz you are something just incredible has it come out that
35:55end yes it has it's come out all over alan
36:02before the gazelle breaks down for a third time we get ready for that all essential pre-race briefing
36:10what we do is we're going to have a couple of timed experiences okay so the two drivers
36:17start like a le monde start by the tractor yeah you get in let's say all right you do two
36:23laps
36:24yeah you pull in get out swap over drivers yeah two laps and then finish whoever wins is the fastest
36:36the fastest
36:36sounds simple but our roots group all-stars are not quite race prepped
36:43so you two are going first remember swap over two laps matt is gonna do the old honors here
36:49yeah just setting you off rather than the cars are you ready to roll yes okay on your marks get
36:56set
36:57go look at alan running he's locked the doors
37:06go on now we're off look at that wheel spin he's off and away
37:18stand lake is a former gravel pit that has been used as a racetrack since 1972
37:25that sounds like it's running on one cylinder
37:32have you done his car no i haven't no you have no i haven't nobbled it
37:41the oval track is just a quarter of a mile long but it still takes them an age to get
37:47to the swap over
37:53here we go here we go here we go this is it all right there you go change over quick
37:58come on let's get on with it going on one cylinder oh no go on get on one cylinder for
38:04the first lap
38:05whatever just making excuses there we are oh hang on go on
38:12this is it
38:22souped-up gazelles were occasionally used for rallying mainly in australia and new zealand
38:29it's not ideal first time i've been here on a track
38:35this one though is thinner gruel
38:39we're coming in now right let's have the flag ready matt
38:51two minutes we want to rerun we had one cylinder for the first lap i'm sorry if you haven't prepared
38:56your car properly then that's your trouble my go is perfect al's was rubbish sorry it's all about
39:03the preparation yeah that's right can i just work on your car for 10 minutes then please uh no
39:08uh two minutes 32 i think it was it's derisory our turn hey
39:21two minutes 32 to beat okay on your marks yeah get set yeah go quick
39:26go on god butter i hope it doesn't start
39:32i've never driven this before
39:39don't push the clutch all the way down
39:43i'm not very poor wheel spin
39:54how are we doing doing all right under the bonnet the minx and the gazelle are pretty much the same
40:02car
40:04but our revived minx runs that little bit better
40:10yeah i'll tell you what it's quite fun though yeah
40:13tell you what it's going to be close did you reckon yeah
40:18i've got a great idea what you just slide across and i'll run around okay okay got it when we
40:24change over
40:29first two laps 96 seconds go i can't really stop i hope his brakes have seized on
40:44it's going to be close with us at the wheel with us at the wheel the next two are even
40:54faster
40:57i'm driving exceptionally well
41:01come on hey here we go but by the end of the second lap the brakes have well and truly
41:08given up
41:09we're coming through yeah and we can't stop very well can we no we're just gonna need a lap
41:16let's just do a victory lap shall we yeah they've got mad again what is going on here
41:23let's wave as we come around for our victory lane we don't actually know the timing yet
41:27no i think i think we've got it in the back haven't we yeah we have yeah let's go and
41:35uh revel in our victory
41:40can i just say we've had a bit of an issue
41:44what because i stopped the stopwatch oh early i stopped it after one lap for the second driver
41:50i got excited so i haven't really got a clue of the timing so you've either got to go again
41:56or it's
41:57a draw i'll have a draw i did completely foul that up i'm sorry that's the reason why i gave
42:05you the
42:05stopwatch hoping that we might get a little advantage yeah we've got a massive advantage that's
42:11right yes and i'd like to believe we have actually won hey fantastic anyway let's get back and find out
42:17how much they're worth next day we do just that when our local classic car dealer chopper roy comes
42:28for a gander they both run and ride we've tested them greatly yes yes have we don't tell him where
42:35is that how much for the singer um five or six hundred quid and that's only because i want the
42:48chrome
42:48off it for another one sorry so you're gonna break it is what he's saying it's that bad he's gonna
42:58break
42:59it can we just talk about the uh minxie yes very desirable quite good lovely patina new new tires
43:08brand new brand new tires somewhere between three and three and a half it's so six hundred and three
43:14and a half yeah yeah have i made a hundred quid did i not say at the very beginning you
43:18might be
43:19lucky to break even actually you've surpassed yourself and made a hundred quid i have and i've
43:24got me chrome and you've got your chrome you've got your chrome everyone's happy everyone's happy
43:28but i've got to tell you though this was three and a half and now it's fine oh dear yeah
43:38well next time
43:39i think we'll take a torch under a quid pro oh my god it's just so depressing all that work
