What has caused mass species extinction throughout Earth's history—on a global scale?

About De-Extinction: Species Protection 2.0?
Extinct species never come back - until now.

We are in the midst of the greatest mass species extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs. Up to 150 species are disappearing every day. Species extinction could be even more decisive for the survival of humankind than climate change. But what was once considered science fiction is no longer out of the question.

We accompany ambitious scientists worldwide in their attempts to revive extinct animals or to give those on the brink of extinction a new chance using state-of-the-art genetic engineering. What is driving the human ambition to bring back extinct species? What does it mean to revive an extinct species? Should it be allowed or are we playing God with unpredictable consequences for our entire planet? Is now the time to use such radical methods to save as many species as possible, in the interest of everyone?

00:02White rhinos still have habitats and could survive if they were not hunted.
00:07Due to the influence of humans, species die out hundreds to thousands of times faster than they would without them.
00:16This is according to studies.
00:19There have been five major species losses in the history of the Earth.
00:24About 450 million years ago, the sea level dropped and it became bitterly cold.
00:3185% of the species died, after which a new diversity developed.
00:36The next time, massive volcanic eruptions and oxygen depletion in the oceans killed off almost all life.
00:44Again, it was lava masses, fires and large quantities of greenhouse gases that caused the third mass extinction.
00:52An asteroid impact triggered the disaster that followed.
00:57And a good 60 million years ago, a meteorite crashed into the Earth, followed by earthquakes and tsunamis.
01:04The sky darkened and the planet was gripped by great cold.
01:07In this fifth event, the dinosaurs disappeared along with many other species.
