00:00Over 50 women were honored yesterday at a special Mother's Day function hosted by the Single Mothers Association.
00:07The event brought together single mothers from across the country for a day of celebration, encouragement and fellowship.
00:14President of the Single Mothers Association, Sherman Wickham Howe, said the initiative was aimed at creating a space where women
00:21could feel appreciated and empowered.
00:24She said many single mothers often carry significant responsibilities without recognition or support.
00:31We try to alleviate a lot of tension and stress by allowing women to celebrate themselves because most of us
00:39don't have a circle to celebrate us.
00:42All the children are underage, they can't say, go get a Mother's Day present.
00:48So we have created our own community.
00:52The event featured games, testimonials and a best-dressed competition.
00:58When we created for about 50 to 60 women yesterday, we have more members but we already know because of
01:05the distance where some of them are, they couldn't make it to the particular event yesterday.
01:10And we had the best-dressed competition, we had games among ourselves and we also did a testimony segment.
01:19The association's president said one of the highlights of the event was hearing success stories from women who have overcome
01:27personal struggles and was able to rebuild their lives.
01:31I felt very happy and proud and accomplished to see a young lady that came to me very broken, recently
01:39divorced with a child and she set herself one month or some weeks old.
01:44She separated from the father and the child is now, I think he's like 11 or 12 years old and
01:51she has remarried.
01:52She has her degree, she didn't have the degree at the time, she has it now, she's an accomplished online
01:59full gospel teacher, gospel school she has online and I'm very proud of her and others.
