Anthony Davis' recent comments have made many wonder if he really wants to be in DC - how does Washington getting the No. 1 pick change that?
Transcript
00:00The NBA draft lottery where the Washington Wizards found out they will pick number one overall for the third time
00:05in its franchise history.
00:07It still doesn't feel real.
00:09No, it does not.
00:10To me, Linnell.
00:11But the storylines, everything that we have to get to, there's just not even enough time to do it.
00:16But Anthony Davis has been a major topic of conversation.
00:19I know the NBA offseason, when your season ends April 13th, you have a lot of time before you get
00:24to the lottery, before you get to the draft.
00:26So storylines will come and they will go.
00:28But one thing has been, is Anthony Davis happy here in Washington?
00:33And we've heard Davis on various different outlets.
00:36He's pretty much said the same exact thing over and over again about, I understand the situation that I've been
00:41in here being traded to Washington.
00:42This is a team that's been rebuilding.
00:44They've got young talent on their team.
00:45However, they're not a good basketball team as it's currently constructed.
00:49But you're going to add the best player from this loaded 2026 draft class.
00:54Does that change the attitude and the feelings of Anthony Davis, a 10-time NBA All-Star?
00:59It should.
01:00I never thought Anthony Davis had much leverage anyway, in terms of trying to force his way out of the
01:05nation's capital.
01:06I thought it was more hubbub than anything.
01:08But when Chris Haynes came out and said what he said, I think that was the first time that I
01:12really felt like, oh, snap.
01:13Maybe A.D. is disgruntled because Chris Haynes has been the mouthpiece for Anthony Davis before.
01:21Anthony Davis has got to love this.
01:23Think about the young core that Washington has between that number one overall pick and Alex Saar and Keyshawn George
01:31and Trey Johnson.
01:32Listen, the future is, I mean, it's super-duper bright.
01:37But the thing that A.D. wants is to be a championship contender.
01:42I don't know if this roster, even with the number one overall pick, with A.D., I don't know if
01:48they're a legitimate championship contender.
01:50It's going to take a healthy season of Anthony Davis and a healthy season of Trey Young to figure that
01:55out.
01:55But, like, if we're being real, even in the best-case scenario with this group next year, the best-case
02:02scenario would be your top six or top four.
02:06I guess we don't know how Trey Young and A.D. are going to look together, by the way.
02:09I think I'm kind of underscoring, like, how elite that duo could potentially be.
02:13The lobs, dude.
02:14The lobs.
02:15The pick and rolls.
02:16And then you're going to have somebody in the corner who can actually knock down threes.
02:19Is it Saar?
02:20Is A.D.?
02:21Who's going to be out there catch-and-shoot?
02:23I mean, there's going to be catch-and-shoot opportunities for everyone on this team.
02:26Are they better than Atlanta?
02:27Are they better than Atlanta?
02:29Yes.
02:29Well, what happens with C.J. McCollum this offseason?
02:31He's a free agent.
02:32I think no matter what, they're better than Atlanta.
02:33I think so.
02:34Yes.
02:36Kaminga's got a team option, too.
02:37But, like, I think they're better than Atlanta, who was the sixth seed.
02:41I think they're better than Orlando.
02:42I like them better than Orlando.
02:44Paolo's their best player.
02:45Our best player is Trey Young.
02:47They're better than Toronto.
02:48They're better than Toronto, for sure.
02:50I would put them over Charlotte, as well.
02:53Well, all right.
02:53So, here's the thing.
02:54Like, we have these conversations right now.
02:56But, like, we've got to start winning the games to really see this materialize.
02:59Because who knows how these are.
03:00I'm saying on paper.
03:01But on paper.
03:02No, no.
03:02This is a good time to talk about these things.
03:04And we could be very wrong about it.
03:06But to say that the team can't be over .500, win 40-plus games in the Eastern Conference, which I
03:11think the playoffs have proven it's pretty mid.
03:14It's not that good.
03:15Outside of Detroit, who looked very vulnerable in the first round.
03:20But Washington's got the frontcourt to combat.
03:23That, this, they walk in, if they walk into the season with Anthony Davis and Alex Saar as their starting
03:30frontcourt, it's the best frontcourt in the Eastern Conference.
03:33I think Alex Saar is going to take another massive step forward.
03:35Did you hear what I just said?
03:36Yes.
03:36If they walk into next year with Alex Saar and Anthony Davis, what one-two punch at the four and
03:42five is better than that in the East?
03:45I can't name it right now off the top of my head.
03:47Like, it doesn't exist, I don't think.
03:48It's going to be a really good frontcourt.
03:50But you're banking on another big step here.
03:52Yes.
03:53From Saar.
03:53Yes.
03:54Who had an incredible year number two.
03:57If you think about what we saw from him in his rookie season, fading away from the basket, shying away
04:01from contact.
04:02He came out like a dog, feasting, right away, off the get-go in his second season.
04:08Jump season is what they call it.
04:09He took his massive jump that he needed.
04:11And I think given the situation that the Wizards were playing in is why he didn't play in so many
04:15games.
04:16Maybe the motor wavered a little bit.
04:18But now that you have a number one overall pick on your team, Trey Young, Anthony Davis, there's going to
04:22be no issues with the motor for Alex Saar now.
04:24You're trying to win.
04:26You're trying to take a step forward.
04:27And think about the impact of Anthony Davis in the building with him, practicing with him on a day-to
04:31-day basis.
04:31He's going to get his ass kicked, but it's going to make him better.
04:33Yeah.
04:34No, that is a given.
04:35But you have these conversations here about AD.
04:38And I think so many Wizards fans have been in a rush all of a sudden to want to get
04:42this guy out of town just because he seemed like he was a little bit.
04:44Why are you in a rush?
04:45Why do you want to get rid of a guy that's on the NBA 75 list?
04:49I know he's 33.
04:50I know he hasn't been able to play five games in a row the last couple of seasons.
04:54Listen to me.
04:56These dudes are different.
04:57When they are 33 years old, although he's got a lot of miles on his body, they are still elite
05:02-level players when they're playing.
05:03They are not the average 33-year-old basketball player.
05:06This is legitimately one of the best two-way basketball players ever.
05:09If you have him in the front court leading your mentorship with a guy like Alex Saar, even if it's
05:15just for a season or two because he's making $120 million over the next two seasons, there is no rush
05:20to move on from this guy.
05:21If you're in a situation here where you're playing decent by the trade deadline, but AD still feels he's not
05:26happy with the situation because he knows they're not going to win the championship when it gets to February, then
05:30you can have those conversations.
05:31What assets can we return for you?
05:33Because as it stands right now, AD doesn't have value.
05:36He doesn't have that much trade value right now.
05:38He's been traded twice in the last 16 months.
05:41What does that tell you about the guy?
05:42They didn't have to give up much to get him.
05:44Well, it tells you if you trade AD, you get the number one pick.
05:47If you trade for Anthony Davis, you end up with the number one pick.
05:49Oh, my God.
05:50Back-to-back years.
05:51What a poll.
05:52You're right.
05:53Mavericks, Wizards.
05:55If you're a team looking to get the number one pick in the 2027 draft, hit us up.
05:591-800-636-1067 is the number.
06:02What are your expectations for the 2026 Washington Wizards?
06:06And do you expect Anthony Davis to be here?
06:08Jimmy is in Silver Spring.
06:09What's up, Jimmy?
06:11Hey, man.
06:12You know, you guys, I'm one of these fans to say, if this guy doesn't want to be here,
06:19he's only going to play 40 or 30 games anyway.
06:24Get rid of him and see what you can get for him.
06:28Get another number one, number two draft picks.
06:31Y'all talking about top 75 player in NBA history?
06:35That's a bunch of crap.
06:37That's balderdash.
06:39They're not getting another first-round pick for him right now.
06:42Yeah, they're not.
06:42This guy, hey, man.
06:44This guy plays 30 games a year.
06:47You're right.
06:47He's been traded.
06:49If he's so great, they traded Luka Dodgers to the Lakers that got this guy.
06:56And they move on from him?
06:58And you're going to tell me that this is the guy that's going to take us to the fourth or
07:04third or fourth seed?
07:05That's crap.
07:06I don't know what you're looking at.
07:08It's not just him.
07:09You act like he's playing by himself.
07:11Bro, bro, bro.
07:12We're talking about Anthony Davis and whether he wants to be here or not.
07:16And whether he can help his team.
07:19Yes, he can help his team for the 30 or 40 games he plays.
07:23What about the other 40?
07:25What about playoff time when he's sitting on the sidelines doing his TV show?
07:30What about a trade deadline?
07:31What about the trade?
07:32You realize you get his value up by him playing.
07:34Why would you move him now when his value is at his lowest?
07:37Again, again, he has shown that he doesn't play.
07:41He's great when he's out there, but when he's not out there, if you're counting on this guy, you're in
07:47the lurch.
07:49Love the show.
07:49Appreciate it, bro.
07:50I appreciate you.
07:52If that call with Jimmy is any sort of precursor for the next couple of months, you're going to be
07:58like, people are backfired up about the Washington Wizards.
08:01I love it.
08:02I love that people are passionate about it.
08:04That's how I feel about that call.
08:06Honestly, it's been so, so long since we've had that level of give a damn when it comes to the
08:11Washington Wizards.
08:12Speaking of Anthony Davis, if we've got it ready, Metal Chris, Anthony Davis was on with Craig Melvin a couple
08:20of weeks ago and had this to say on the Today Show.
08:24It was on with Craig Melvin and had this to say about the Wizards organization, as things currently stand.
08:30How hard is it for a really good player to play for a really bad team?
08:37That's the thing, right?
08:38So I had this, and everybody knows this.
08:41I told the owner this.
08:42I told GM everybody, media.
08:46When you're looking at the Washington Wizards, from the outside looking in, everybody's right.
08:55But when you get into the organization and see how great of an organization it is, the owner is amazing.
09:03Obviously, the city is, D.C. is amazing.
09:06We are a very bad basketball team.
09:08Yeah.
09:09For sure.
09:10On the flip side, I think it's very tough to go from bad team to a championship contender.
09:17It takes time.
09:18Yes.
09:18That's with anybody.
09:19It could be a team who's just won and just not good.
09:25So it takes time.
09:26It takes a couple years.
09:28It takes a couple years.
09:29I think you hit the nail on the head with you're trying to take that step forward.
09:32But I feel like after getting the number one overall pick, he's going to be feeling a lot better about
09:37the situation that he is in here in D.C.
09:40Taking you up to 6 p.m. right here on The Fan.
09:42Stick with us.
09:43We'll be back.
