00:00hello there welcome to another episode of putting dr. G on the spot in the month
00:04of May for the second installation we're going to talk about how mumps as a type
00:11of virus going to affect sexual or reproductive health in men mumps actually
00:22is quite rare now in fact actually it is caused by a small virus called the
00:27mumps virus commonly actually just circulating in the air and it's
00:32transmission through coughing sneezing and also saliva and how does it affect
00:39men actually it generally just affect young men and adolescents and then get
00:45into the parotid glands and cause swelling in the face and swelling around the
00:49neck so what's the big deal in fact it is no big deal most people actually
00:55recover very very quickly but there's a very strange things that mumps virus
01:00tends to do is actually heading down towards the testicle and that itself may
01:05cause a bit of a problem fortunately the vast majority of men who had mumps in
01:11their youth actually just get it either on one side or get it mildly and the mum
01:17orchitis which means inflammation of the testes actually just resolved by itself
01:23however for some men when the mumps actually affect both sides of testicle and
01:29severe epididymal orchitis and that itself can cause atrophy which is the
01:35synchage of the testicle so as a result for these men they are quite oblivious of
01:41what's going on because their testosterone is not affected and also their
01:46erection is not affected and they continue to get into adulthood with
01:50normal sex life however when they attempt to have a baby that's when the
01:57problem arises because when it is discovered that they may have oligospermia
02:03meaning that not so good quality sperms or azospermia meaning there's no
02:09sperms at all then they realize that the mumps in their youth has actually
02:13destroyed the testicular functions so in summary mumps is a benign condition
02:19unless it affect the testicle and therefore the vaccination is actually
02:24crucial because vaccination in MMR measles mumps and rubella actually has been
02:31proven to almost eliminating the prevalence or the existence of mumps for the
02:40the following week we're gonna talk about various form of hepatitis hepatitis A
02:44hepatitis B and hepatitis C which one of these will actually affect sexual
02:49health you interested you need to stay tuned for next week's putting dr. G on the
02:54spot
