00:00:02Are you busting to get away? I mean aren't we all right now? Well Victoria's
00:00:06Yarra Valley is a magic place to do it particularly when you can stay in a
00:00:10gorgeous little cottage like this one. Australia's love affair with tiny homes
00:00:14is stronger than ever but there's an inspiring story behind this one about a
00:00:18gutsy lady tradie who built it so get on the tools got a whole host of ideas to
00:00:23start your weekend. From tiny homes to Adam's big rack the perfect addition to
00:00:31any backyard shed. I'll tell you what I'll go off and make a surfboard rack and you
00:00:36go get the shed ready. Chocolate eggs can't be the only thing on the menu this Easter.
00:00:41So no matter where you are for your great Easter getaway, blow up the barbie. Charlie's
00:00:46energizing a garden that had been committing the cardinal sin. It was uninviting and
00:00:52nobody wanted to spend any time out here. How about a home and garden so magical
00:00:56you might not believe it was real? This is Oak and Monkey Puzzle in Wombat Forest. Who
00:01:03says every makeover has to involve a splash of colour? Not Juliet. So with some fresh
00:01:09paint and some furniture we're gonna make it fabulous and also functional. Easter is
00:01:15a time for families fun and finding the eggs before your dog does. And when it comes
00:01:20to Easter eggs and dogs. The two of them don't mix.
00:01:38I'd love to say I'm a gun surfer but the only thing I can stand up on is dry land.
00:01:42But my mate
00:01:43is dry land. Grayson, he can walk on water.
00:01:56Grayson, mate, how are you? Oh, pretty good. I tell you what, you make that look easy.
00:02:01Oh mate, years of practice eh, that's how it's worked. You've been doing it for a while?
00:02:05Yeah, maybe since I was six. Yeah, well you're one of the rising stars on the pro circuit, aren't you?
00:02:09So you'd have a few career highlights I'm guessing?
00:02:12Yeah, over the years I've racked up a few but I reckon most notably is California. Won a world title
00:02:17there back in 2018.
00:02:19Wow, that's amazing. Mate, well being a pro surfer, I'm guessing you've got a fair few surfboards.
00:02:24Yeah mate, I've got a fair few, that's for sure. And where do you keep them all?
00:02:27Well, at the moment they're all jammed in my room, causing an absolute mess.
00:02:32In your bedroom? In my bedroom. Mate, a pro surfer shouldn't be sleeping with his surfboards.
00:02:37Mate, I love them. I reckon we can do one better than that. Do you have a shed?
00:02:42Got a shed. Can we use a shed?
00:02:43Of course, you can use my shed. Well I'll tell you what, I'll go off and make a surfboard rack,
00:02:47and you go get the shed ready. I'll go clean it out right now.
00:02:50Let's do it. Let's go.
00:02:54So I'm keeping the design and build nice and simple.
00:02:57So it's definitely a project you'll be able to tackle on the weekend.
00:03:00For the tools, I'm just using a handsaw and a cordless drill.
00:03:04And the materials, I've got some 70x45 Dress Pine and some 25mm Tassie Oak Dow.
00:03:10The first thing I'm going to do is cut these battens to size.
00:03:12I'm going to cut these balls.
00:03:32With our battens cut, we can see how this works.
00:03:34These will get attached to the wall, and now we need somewhere for our surfboards to sit.
00:03:38For that, I'll be using the dowel, which will be coming out on an angle.
00:03:42So the more I cut, the more surfboards you can stack.
00:04:06So we need 16, and they're 530mm long.
00:04:10And because of that, I've decided to set up a stopping block.
00:04:13That way, I'm not measuring each one individually.
00:04:23Killing two birds with one stone. It's good work out as well.
00:04:29Don't mourn my sweat.
00:04:38With all our dowels cut, I've just marked out on our battens where I want them to sit.
00:04:43But I don't want them to be square with this batten.
00:04:45I actually want it to be on a little bit of an angle.
00:04:47That way, the boards won't fall off the wall.
00:04:50The easiest way to find the angle, which is 20 degrees, is with a speed square.
00:04:53I can simply sit it on my timber, use this as my pivot point.
00:04:56And I'll just move it till I hit my 20 degrees.
00:04:59Mark it.
00:05:00I'll cut it, which I have with this one here.
00:05:02And I'll just use that as a template to angle my cordless drill on.
00:05:07And then I'll follow that angle, and I know that it'll be right.
00:05:21And so I get the same depth on every hole.
00:05:23I've just put some masking tape on my spade bit.
00:05:36With all the holes drilled, now I'm just putting in a 6mm bit.
00:05:39And I'm going to use that to transfer this center mark through to the back of our batten.
00:05:43That way, when I glue this doweling, that will be where my screw goes.
00:05:55It's time to get back home.
00:06:00To put the rack together, I'm going to be gluing these dowels in place.
00:06:03I'll do about three at a time, then I'm going to roll it over.
00:06:06I'm going to pre-drill a hole and countersink as well.
00:06:09That way, we don't split the dowel.
00:06:11And you just want to use your 20 degree template to make sure when you're fixing it off,
00:06:16that the dowel is on the right angle.
00:06:36I think this is looking pretty cool.
00:06:39This surf rack is really stacking up.
00:06:44I tell you what, Grayson, you've made a small area feel large.
00:06:48You've done well at clearing it out.
00:06:49Yeah, mate.
00:06:50Done pretty well.
00:06:51It was an absolute shock and mess in here before.
00:06:53But we've come in, we've gutted it, and it looks all right, eh?
00:06:57Yeah, fantastic.
00:06:58So we've got these new racks.
00:07:00It's pretty simple.
00:07:01Obviously, we're going to sit this here.
00:07:03I'm going to utilize your stud work.
00:07:04So we'll put one on this stud, one on this stud here.
00:07:07Just got some bugle screws behind you.
00:07:09We'll use them to fix them off.
00:07:11And you'll be able to fit, what is it?
00:07:12I think seven boards on here, mate.
00:07:14Yeah, it'll be seven boards in here.
00:07:15It'll be awesome.
00:07:26All right, there's only one thing left to do.
00:07:28Rack them up.
00:07:29Not playing pool, mate.
00:07:30Let's put some boards in it.
00:07:31Yeah, he's on to that.
00:07:47I tell you what, Grayson, mate, I reckon this is radical.
00:07:50What do you think?
00:07:51Oh, mate, it looks awesome.
00:07:52I love it.
00:07:54Yeah?
00:07:54Thank you so much.
00:07:55Nah, all good, bro, all good.
00:07:57Well, I tell you what, it opens up the floor area here,
00:07:58so you've got a bit more room to move around.
00:08:00But look, there's no line that I'm not a surfer.
00:08:03Everyone knows that.
00:08:05But I've got one question.
00:08:06I did buy a blow-up paddleboard, and I even struggle to get up on that.
00:08:09So maybe you can just start giving me lessons on the paddleboard first
00:08:11before we go to surfing.
00:08:12What do you think?
00:08:13Oh, mate, if you can't get up on the paddleboard,
00:08:15I reckon you should just retire.
00:08:17There's no helping me.
00:08:18There's no helping me out.
00:08:20Nah, well, mate, well, good luck with your future, yeah.
00:08:21Thank you very much.
00:08:22I love it.
00:08:23Nah, good stuff, bro.
00:08:25Enjoy.
00:08:27You'll be the one thing I adore.
00:08:36Make a deal.
00:08:37You work on ensuring your Easter holiday is fun,
00:08:40and I'll help you make it delicious.
00:08:44We catch up with inspiring tradie Amy
00:08:46and check out the latest build.
00:08:48This one's nearly finished,
00:08:49and we're taking it out for some beautiful accommodations.
00:08:53Oak and Monkey Puzzle in Wombat Forest?
00:08:55It sounds like the location for a magical storybook,
00:08:58but it's actually a stunning garden that you won't want to miss.
00:09:16I feel like I'm walking through a beautiful enchanted storybook.
00:09:20This is Oak and Monkey Puzzle in Wombat Forest.
00:09:22It's a magical sounding location for what is a stunning house and garden.
00:09:27And I can't wait to show you more of this amazing property.
00:09:34A garden can be different things to different people.
00:09:37Is it a display or something more productive?
00:09:39This garden is all of that and more for acclaimed landscape architect, Natasha Morgan.
00:09:50Natasha, this is a breathtaking garden.
00:09:52And with that forest backdrop, it's got quite a magical feel.
00:09:55Is that something you were intending when you designed it?
00:09:57Oh, look, the forest is like such a huge drawcard.
00:10:01That was really how we designed the whole garden.
00:10:04Connecting, you know, the house with the forest behind,
00:10:06and then creating that garden in between.
00:10:10So how do you use the garden now?
00:10:12Has it fulfilled your dream?
00:10:14Oh, absolutely, and even more.
00:10:16So I use the garden for everything from growing the produce for our family,
00:10:22growing produce for my preserves, cut flowers.
00:10:26And the garden has been designed so that it's multifunctional,
00:10:30so that it can expand and contract depending on whether we're having small groups
00:10:35or large groups or workshops or 155 people in the garden for a regional longest lunch.
00:10:41And I have to mention this plant right behind you.
00:10:43Look at your hydrangeas.
00:10:45This is unbelievable.
00:10:47Yeah, this is hydrangea paniculata,
00:10:49and it really steals the show at this time of the year.
00:10:52Doesn't it?
00:10:52It is just incredible.
00:10:54It tolerates the sun a lot more than your standard hydrangea.
00:10:58It's just magnificent.
00:11:07This terrace up here is the cut flower garden, so we've got three terraces.
00:11:11And so here I grow lots of things that I use either for supplying florists
00:11:16or I do a little bit of floristry.
00:11:18And you do not see this plant very often?
00:11:21No, this one's monata, and it's actually part of the bergamot family.
00:11:25And it is just beautiful.
00:11:31This central garden bed is just such a feature when you come into the driveway.
00:11:35You know you're somewhere special.
00:11:36Yeah, this is our entry garden,
00:11:38and it really is the hero of your entry experience to the house.
00:11:43And, you know, this is one of my favourites.
00:11:45This is Verbena benariensis, and it's just beautiful,
00:11:49and the butterflies and the bees go crazy for it.
00:11:55And we can't talk about this stunning garden without talking about the house.
00:11:59It's got such a fascinating history.
00:12:01It does, it does.
00:12:02The house was originally built somewhere in the 1800s,
00:12:06and it was O'Connell Store.
00:12:07It was the Spargo Creek Post Office.
00:12:10It was the pub for a while.
00:12:14Do you have any favourite original elements from the house?
00:12:17When I discovered this property, it was a ruin.
00:12:22There wasn't much here.
00:12:23But when I walked inside the house,
00:12:25it has the most incredible exposed timbers,
00:12:29four-metre ceilings, like just the lofty proportions,
00:12:32just instantly I was like, this is incredible.
00:12:35The original earth and timber wall,
00:12:38with the fingerprints of the original builders,
00:12:41and that has become the jewel in the home.
00:12:43It really is something incredibly special.
00:12:53I'm just doing a bit of exploring,
00:12:54and I wanted to show you some of my other favourite features in this garden.
00:12:58So take a look at this.
00:12:59This is the Huonville Crabapple,
00:13:01and it's actually been trained into what's called a step-over espalier.
00:13:05So the tree itself is grafted onto a dwarf rootstock,
00:13:08which means you can keep it nice and low like this.
00:13:10Great way to divide the garden,
00:13:12but still be able to see that beautiful view beyond.
00:13:14And take a look at the crabapple itself.
00:13:17So it's nice and red on the outside.
00:13:19When you cut it through,
00:13:21you can see it's beautiful and red on the inside too.
00:13:24And it's not kind of tart like your standard crabapple.
00:13:27It tends to be a little bit more zingy and crispy,
00:13:29so it makes great dehydrated apple crisps that you can just snack on,
00:13:33or it's really good roasted.
00:13:42I'm loving Natasha's selection of plants in this garden,
00:13:45and there are some real surprises too,
00:13:47like this one right here,
00:13:49which you might not recognise as an echinacea.
00:13:51So echinaceas are great plants for extending colour in the garden
00:13:54because they begin flowering early summer
00:13:56and continue all the way through to autumn.
00:13:58The seed heads are really attractive too.
00:14:01But this one's quite different.
00:14:02This is a double echinacea,
00:14:04and it's called Double Scoop Lemon Cream,
00:14:06and behind me is its sister, Double Scoop Raspberry.
00:14:10Take a look at those pom-pom-like flowers.
00:14:13So if what you've seen today has taken your breath away,
00:14:16then we'll be back later in the show with Natasha
00:14:18to put together a stunning floral display
00:14:20cut straight from the garden.
00:14:23Am I feeding dogs chocolate?
00:14:25No.
00:14:26But a very safe alternative.
00:14:28Keep watching.
00:14:29I'll tell you all about it.
00:14:30Lamb really is the heart and soul of Easter, or Passover.
00:14:35Either way, fire up the barbecue.
00:14:37We have you sorted.
00:14:38It's a great recipe.
00:14:41In this month's Better Homes and Gardens magazine,
00:14:44we'll show you how to transform your space
00:14:46with simple yet effective tips and twists
00:14:49that make a world of difference.
00:14:51Pep up your space with these six great furniture hacks.
00:14:54Stylish DIY projects to make over your furniture on a budget.
00:14:59We share 25 tips and ideas so you can create a beautiful and restful bedroom.
00:15:05Plus how to create a luxurious padded bed head and some cute toys for kids.
00:15:09It's all inside the new issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.
00:15:13It's out now.
00:15:20The great Australian tradition at Easter of course is to get out and about and enjoy beautiful Australian scenery just
00:15:26like this.
00:15:27But you are going to want something to eat.
00:15:28This is Easter all over.
00:15:36Whether you're doing Easter or Passover in my case, they're actually the same time this year.
00:15:40There is nothing better than a great bit of Australian lamb on the barbecue of course.
00:15:44Grab yourself a sharp knife and a bone in lamb leg.
00:15:48All I'm doing is making some little incisions all over the lamb.
00:15:52It is important to be thorough.
00:15:54And then we'll get a little combination of flavours to pop in those holes.
00:16:00We'll start with some rosemary.
00:16:16The other thing we're going to add, the bit you might not have thought of, is some olives.
00:16:19So we're just going to halve those.
00:16:20And then a little bit of garlic, a little bit of rosemary and half an olive into each of our
00:16:24little holes.
00:16:29So a little bit of extra virgin olive oil over the top and a decent sprinkle of salt.
00:16:36And then we can get it onto the barbecue flat plate.
00:16:38But that said, with the barbecue there is something you need to know.
00:16:48Regardless what kind of barbecue you're going to use, you do need to be really hot on one side and
00:16:53not so hot on the other.
00:16:55OK, it's looking pretty good. Maybe one more bit of timber in here.
00:16:59OK, nice.
00:17:00Now, this cool side, that's where we're going to cook our lamb.
00:17:03But you do need to make sure it's got plenty of oil.
00:17:04Don't forget my love.
00:17:12Don't forget my love.
00:17:15You hear that? Gentle hiss. It's beautiful.
00:17:19If it starts to catch fire straight away, you're on the wrong side of the barbecue.
00:17:28The rosemary, garlic and olive mixture is really good on the lamb, but we're going to take it up a
00:17:32notch as well.
00:17:33It's just a matter of grabbing some citrus. I've got oranges and grapefruit.
00:17:38Just cut those into slices. We're going to char those on the hot side of the barbecue.
00:17:42We're going to toast some spices.
00:17:46We're going to grab some fresh bay leaves. It's an amazing combination.
00:18:06Now, we're going to pop these in a saucepan along with the spices, and then a little bit of brown
00:18:09sugar just to sweeten it up, and some orange juice.
00:18:28It is hard to know which one smells better at this stage. The lamb is good, but this glaze is
00:18:34incredible.
00:18:34It's got that little bit of char to it. Lovely spice. Great.
00:18:38Okay. With the glaze, we just need to grab a little spoon at a time and get that onto the
00:18:45lamb.
00:18:46Now, you need to be a little bit careful. Remember, it's got sugar in there, not too much, and you
00:18:49don't want it to burn.
00:18:51So, a little bit turn, a little bit turn. I could make a song about that.
00:19:09One last tip. Make sure you're getting every last bit of glaze off the barbecue. It looks absolutely incredible.
00:19:17So, no matter where you are, for your great Easter getaway, borrow up the barbie. It's a great dishware.
00:19:24We take it to a place only if we know.
00:19:30Dr Harry has some important tips to avoiding a sick dog this Easter.
00:19:34So, what can't your dog eat? All these things on the left. What can your dog eat? All these things
00:19:40on the right.
00:19:42Charlie's in a whole new world with his own genie.
00:19:45As long as you're above my lump.
00:19:47Here he is. Perfect.
00:19:52When you meet a tradie who makes tiny homes, there's only one question to ask.
00:19:58Let me get a tram in your backyard.
00:20:00Juliet shares a fundamental rule for home renos.
00:20:04For the fastest, most effective bang for your buck makeover, it has to be paint.
00:20:08And Melissa is learning the secrets to incredible flower arrangements.
00:20:13I love that you think outside the square when it comes to what people would think of cut flowers.
00:20:28The best part about Easter for kids is hunting for chocolate eggs.
00:20:32The trouble is it isn't always just the kids that find them.
00:20:37Sometimes it's the family pet.
00:20:39And I'm talking about your dog.
00:20:41And when it comes to Easter eggs and dogs, the two of them don't mix.
00:20:46And if they do happen to mix, there is trouble. Believe you me.
00:20:50Well, rather than just talk about the situation, we're going to meet someone who has had a problem with their
00:20:55dog.
00:20:56She will be able to tell you exactly what happened, what had to be done to treat it,
00:21:00and the costs involved are pretty horrific.
00:21:04Well, Betty.
00:21:05Hello, Harry.
00:21:07This dog of yours really likes chocolate.
00:21:09Oh, yes. Far too much.
00:21:11What happened the very first time?
00:21:13The very first time there was chocolate in a cardboard box.
00:21:17It was taped properly and everything.
00:21:20She found the box.
00:21:21She tore it open and consumed the ingredients.
00:21:24So you realised that something had gone wrong.
00:21:27What sort of symptoms was she showing to you?
00:21:29Well, she was showing distress.
00:21:30She was trembling and shaking uncontrollably.
00:21:33Really?
00:21:34So you went down to the vet.
00:21:35What did the vet say right from the word go?
00:21:38Well, the vet just grabbed the dog in a hurry.
00:21:40Yeah.
00:21:41And rushed it straight out the back to get the treatment going as quick as they could possibly do it.
00:21:45That's right.
00:21:46So we sedate the dog and we actually wash their stomach out.
00:21:49And then we keep them sedated off and keep them in hospital for a while.
00:21:52Mm-hmm.
00:21:52It's quite toxic to the liver.
00:21:54Just like sort of having a heavy dose of alcohol will do the same sort of liver damage.
00:21:58So it takes a while for the liver to recover as well.
00:22:00And we've got to get them over that sort of really excitable phase.
00:22:04So you've got the cost of, and very often it's at two o'clock in the morning or some ridiculous
00:22:09hour
00:22:09and it's going to cost three times as much.
00:22:10Well, that's correct, yes.
00:22:12So what does chocolate do to you?
00:22:14How do you feel after you've had a nice square of chocolate?
00:22:16Oh, it gives you a lift, yes.
00:22:18Exactly.
00:22:19Yeah.
00:22:19Do you like coffee?
00:22:21Yes.
00:22:22What does coffee do to you?
00:22:23It does the same thing, yes.
00:22:24It gives you a bit of a lift.
00:22:25Yeah.
00:22:26Well, basically they have the same sort of end product, a thing called theobromine.
00:22:30And so that's what gives you this sort of, you know, bit of a charge, if you like.
00:22:34The trouble is that, you know, a dog of that size having a piece of chocolate like that's
00:22:39probably equivalent to about, say, five short blacks.
00:22:43How do we protect our four-legged friends when this is going on?
00:22:45Well, the only way to do it would be when you put the eggs out, count how many you put
00:22:50out
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:50So you know how many are there.
00:22:52Yeah.
00:22:53Shut the dog away until the hunt's over.
00:22:57Then count the eggs and make sure you haven't left any in the garden.
00:23:00So we know we shouldn't be giving dogs chocolates.
00:23:03But I don't want to end this on a negative note.
00:23:06I want to end it on a positive note.
00:23:07If we can't give our four-legged children treats at Easter time, what can they eat?
00:23:12There are treats we can give our dogs which are based on another product which is absolutely
00:23:17safe.
00:23:23So what can't your dog eat?
00:23:25All these things on the left.
00:23:26What can your dog eat?
00:23:28All these things on the right.
00:23:30Chocolate, as we already know, is toxic to dogs.
00:23:34But you reckon this is pretty harmless, don't you?
00:23:37Hot cross bun?
00:23:38Let's open it up and see what's inside.
00:23:40Four or five sultanas there.
00:23:43Sultanas are grapes.
00:23:44They're toxic to dogs.
00:23:45And while we might like them and you might think that's quite innocent to give to your
00:23:49dog, the answer is no it's not.
00:23:51Grapes are toxic to dogs.
00:23:53Now what about the good guys?
00:23:54Well, the most important thing is to read the label.
00:23:58First choice for me is a biscuit.
00:24:00And if you look carefully at the label, you'll see what it contains.
00:24:03And once again it contains no chocolates at all.
00:24:05So quite safe for the dog to eat.
00:24:09Look at this.
00:24:10Yogurt.
00:24:11Safe for your dog.
00:24:11It actually says on the packet that it's safe for your dog.
00:24:15So that's fine.
00:24:17And if you don't like that colour, and you don't like that shape, well there's always
00:24:21the traditional shape of course.
00:24:23Something like that.
00:24:24Okay?
00:24:25And what's it contain?
00:24:26See this stuff?
00:24:27Caravan.
00:24:28That's what I'm really talking about.
00:24:30A chocolate substitute.
00:24:31Safe for your dogs.
00:24:32And safe for us.
00:24:35I reckon she's a dog cross with a vacuum cleaner.
00:24:41If he doesn't button the camera off shortly, I'll finish the whole darn rabbit.
00:24:46Have a happy Easter everybody.
00:24:48And your dog too.
00:24:54First impressions are so important when it comes to the front of your house.
00:24:58Who must judge people on the way the front of the house looks?
00:25:01Very nice.
00:25:02Well let me tell you, it's exactly the same when it comes to the back garden.
00:25:08This back garden is the perfect example of a bad first impression.
00:25:12The first thing you see is this big block of buildings here.
00:25:15Then, your eyes drawn over to the nasty looking bins.
00:25:18And as you turn back around, well the things in the veggie patch are looking nice.
00:25:21But the whole thing needs a bit of a revamp.
00:25:23So I've got some ideas for trouble spots just like this.
00:25:39To get rid of our bins, I'm going to be building a screen.
00:25:42Now I want something quite tall, about 1.8 meters.
00:25:45So I need to go into the ground one third of that.
00:25:48So I'm digging a hole that's 600 mil.
00:25:49We're going to put in two posts, bolt one to the wall.
00:25:52Then we can put some slats in and some vertical black butt screening.
00:25:55Not only is this going to hide the bins, but any other junk in the garden is going to be
00:25:59kept behind here as well.
00:26:00That way, when you're in the garden, you get a lovely peaceful setting.
00:26:17I've pre-cut our black butt decking boards ready for our screening.
00:26:21Now I've cut these to 1.7.
00:26:22I said our screen was 1.8, but by cutting them 100 mil shorter, it gives us a bit of
00:26:27play
00:26:27in the height because we're not on an exactly level playing field here.
00:26:31I've also pre-drilled and countersunk the holes ready to go into our rails.
00:26:36Now what I'm going to be doing is using this fancy little shaving brush type thing to oil the back
00:26:40of our boards.
00:26:41The reason I'm oiling the back of the board is to protect it.
00:26:45I don't want the boards to cut.
00:26:52With our framework complete, I'm just giving it a lick of black paint.
00:26:56And what that does is it makes it disappear and the black butt screening that goes on front, well that
00:27:01becomes the star of the show.
00:27:12When it comes to getting the screening boards on your screen, I've already clamped a spirit level to the top.
00:27:19So I know my top is going to be nice and level if I just use that as a guide.
00:27:22I'm also going to use the plumb line of the post for my first board.
00:27:27I'm going to put one screw in the top and one screw in the bottom and leave out the middle.
00:27:31I'll use a packer to space them out and I'll do five to start with.
00:27:35Once I've done five, I'll go back and pop this packer in the middle and screw the middle off.
00:27:40That way it's going to take out any bows of the timber.
00:27:43You'll also notice I've got offset screw marks.
00:27:46If I had them all straight along in one line, it would never be perfect and it would get really
00:27:51quite annoying to look at.
00:27:52By offsetting them, it takes out just those millimetre imperfections with a much more professional look.
00:27:57If you're doing this by yourself, you could clamp it off or you could summon yourself a special genie allowing
00:28:03me to rub my lamp.
00:28:04JR!
00:28:07Here he is, perfect. You don't mind holding this for me, do you?
00:28:10Not at all. Thank you.
00:28:25You can see what I mean with this centre rail. Our first gap is absolutely fine. The second one, far
00:28:30too big. The one after that, too small.
00:28:33So I'm going to get a chisel into this one, pull it all over this way and make the gaps
00:28:37nice and even.
00:28:56I'm just applying our oil to the front face of the screen now to finish it off.
00:29:00Now this is going to protect it against the sun and the harsh elements.
00:29:04A couple of things to remember is you always want to work the wet edge.
00:29:07So don't do the top half and then the bottom half, otherwise you'll get a line across the middle of
00:29:10the screen.
00:29:11So go from top all the way down to the bottom.
00:29:14And I know you've done the back and sides, but don't forget to do the cut edge on top because
00:29:18that's where water will get in.
00:29:24I've got a few jobs to revamp our veggie patch. First of all, I'm going to take off this capping.
00:29:29There's a mitre cut here and over time it's just opened up.
00:29:35So I'm going to replace it with these thicker boards and I'm just going to give it a nice square
00:29:40finish.
00:29:41It's never going to open up.
00:29:48Last up, I'm going to be putting a lattice screen across the back.
00:29:51You grow broad beans, you grow cucumbers, maybe even try pumpkins.
00:30:02Well, we haven't spent much on this veggie patch, but it's already looking better.
00:30:14I really love these Corten planters. They're going to allow us to bring in loads of plants, varying heights and
00:30:20transform this space.
00:30:21But there's more of that coming up.
00:30:24The cutest little tiny home set in the most stunning location, built by lady tradie extraordinaire, Amy.
00:30:30Love being on the tours, Jo, and just look at the result.
00:30:35Are you looking for a project for the Easter break? I'll help you get started.
00:30:40To catch up on any stories you've missed, plus find lots of pet training tips and tricks, as well as
00:30:46loads of cute animals and exclusive content, check us out on 7 Plus.
00:30:57Well, back in the day, they sure knew how to build a grand old homestead, like this 1900s Victorian house
00:31:03on the outskirts of Melbourne.
00:31:06After all this time.
00:31:13But with house and energy prices on the rise, many Aussies are trending in the opposite direction, downsizing their lifestyle,
00:31:20even going all the way with a tiny home.
00:31:23Now, one enterprising tradie who actually grew up on this very property is making the most of the current situation,
00:31:30taking the small is beautiful philosophy into holiday retreats.
00:31:40Tell me about tiny stays, Amy.
00:31:42Yeah, so me and Ben created tiny stays. Basically, we were working for the man and we wanted to, we
00:31:48thought there was more out there.
00:31:49We wanted to live more. So we're like, let's build tiny houses, rent them out. People can get off grid,
00:31:55escape to nature, escape from their bosses.
00:31:56And we thought, well, we've got the experience building. We like holidaying. Let's give it a crack.
00:32:01So this is Ben, your brother, that you're talking about?
00:32:03Yeah, yeah. Ben's my brother. And he was an accountant. I was a plumber.
00:32:07And we're like, you know what? Let's do something together.
00:32:09So we wrote down all our skills and we're like, we can build. We like holidaying. Let's start whipping one
00:32:15up in my parents' property.
00:32:16Send it up.
00:32:19Send it to life.
00:32:20Oh, I want to get in the fly.
00:32:22All right. That didn't rock.
00:32:23There's quite a bit going on here.
00:32:25Yeah, there's so much. And I think that's where me and my brother get our kind of skills of, you
00:32:29know, wanting to create these luxury getaways.
00:32:31Because we've seen our parents build the most beautiful B&Bs, build an amazing tram.
00:32:35And we're like, we can give this a crack. Hopefully it runs in the blood.
00:32:39Because I'm worried if I want to. Because I'm going near. At the end of the day, I have no
00:32:46choice.
00:32:49Did you say a tram? Tram's over there. Yeah, let's go.
00:32:58How cool is this? I know. It's so beautiful. Oh, there's my brother and dad now.
00:33:02Hey, guys. How are you? Hi, girls. Glad you could make it.
00:33:05Thank you. Now, how did you get a tram in your backyard?
00:33:09We were lucky enough to get hold of this tram off Vic Track. It wasn't in too bad a condition.
00:33:12Obviously I had to paint it and renovate the whole thing.
00:33:15So I love it that you were the person who kind of started off all of these structures around your
00:33:19place.
00:33:19And then you two have actually picked up the baton. Then what is it like working with your sister?
00:33:23I mean, I've got siblings and I love them to death, but I'm not sure how we go actually renovating
00:33:28together and starting a business together.
00:33:30It's a bit of a love-hate relationship, I guess. She's good. She's awesome. She's definitely got the skills on
00:33:35the tools for sure.
00:33:47This has been done so exceptionally well. Yeah, it looks so beautiful. And this is actually the existing tram when
00:33:54it was on the road.
00:33:55Wow. I love the bit of history, but even all the advertising signs that are still up.
00:33:58Absolutely. Mum and Dad have got such a good vision of this whole place, like how it's all going to
00:34:02turn out.
00:34:03So many of the original details. I love these handles. I love the seats. Yeah.
00:34:08The pressed tin is gorgeous on the ceiling.
00:34:17My gosh, I'm having so much fun today. So where's the next stop?
00:34:21How about we take you out to see one of our tiny houses out in the field?
00:34:23Sounds good. Ding ding!
00:34:38Wow, this looks pretty as a picture. Yeah, I love this one. This is the first one we built and
00:34:43it's just my little baby.
00:34:44Look, it's not just how cute the cabin is, but this location, this property is absolutely stunning.
00:34:49How do you actually find the properties to put the cabins onto?
00:34:52We do mail drops. We basically look for people who aren't really using their land, got spare land,
00:34:58and, you know, want to make some extra coin and we rent the land off them.
00:35:01Wow, can't wait to have a look inside. Let's do it.
00:35:09Oh, this is so cute. It's really quaint, but actually so much bigger than I thought it was going to
00:35:14be from when you see it outside.
00:35:16I know, it actually feels quite big in here. I think because we built it for B&B purposes.
00:35:21So you have the bed here, you look out at the beautiful stars and the view.
00:35:24It's great you get a beautiful breeze coming across here.
00:35:27Yeah.
00:35:28Obviously, the advantage that you have is this is on a trailer.
00:35:31That is the best part about them.
00:35:33That's why we can get the most beautiful land in the most beautiful locations,
00:35:36chuck it on the car, put it here and they're completely off grid.
00:35:40Wow. So off grid in what way? So you've obviously got solar?
00:35:43Yeah, we got solar, we have water tanks, we have a couple of gas bottles
00:35:46and my favourite, the composting toilet.
00:35:49So you certainly don't actually lack for anything when you're here.
00:35:52You've got everything, shower, the whole kit and caboodle.
00:35:54Yeah, you can have a hot shower.
00:35:55I always say you've got the luxuries of a hotel but yet immersed out in nature.
00:35:59We built a roundhouse somehow
00:36:02We put our hands over our hearts
00:36:07And we swore on that day
00:36:10And I'll never fall apart
00:36:14So you're actually a qualified plumber?
00:36:20Yeah, yep, plumber by trade.
00:36:22So tell me, when you actually went through trade school
00:36:24You would have been one of the very few females, I'm guessing.
00:36:28Yeah, I kind of rocked up with my pink socks and I got a few weird looks
00:36:32But, you know, you get on the tools and you put in 110% and it all works out.
00:36:36I'm sure when you first started out, you're a gorgeous young woman, were there interesting moments?
00:36:41In my first week I crashed my car in the job site fence, I got a piece of metal stuck
00:36:45in my butt, I got my head stuck in a scaffold.
00:36:48So it was a bit rough and I kind of went home thinking, maybe this isn't for me.
00:36:52But, you know, you learn and you just try all these new skills and by the end of it you're
00:36:58like, nah, this is good, I'm happy.
00:37:00Is it something that was always a goal of yours?
00:37:02Well, it was kind of a goal.
00:37:04Like I used to study beauty therapy and I wasn't very good at it, I couldn't paint nails.
00:37:08And I always had this thing in the back of my head, my dad used to take me to the
00:37:12servo and I would reach for a magnum.
00:37:15And he always said to me, Amy, you can't get magnums, they're plumbers ice creams, only plumbers can afford magnums.
00:37:22So I was like, it's in the back of my head, maybe I'll be a plumber.
00:37:25So what were you allowed to have if you couldn't have a magnum?
00:37:27Frosty Fruits in there.
00:37:30So you've also gone down the reality path, not once but twice.
00:37:33I went on Survivor, realised I can't lie, wasn't that good at it, got booted pretty early and then I
00:37:39thought, think Amy.
00:37:40And I'm like, I'm not bad at renovating.
00:37:42I'm painting colour for like the first time in my life.
00:37:47And it's so scary, I'm like having an anxiety attack.
00:37:51House Rules was amazing and I learnt so much.
00:37:53I am super stressed at the moment.
00:37:55This is literally the most stressed I've ever been in the competition.
00:37:58There's just so much styling to get done.
00:38:01The thing with that, all I hear is that you just take up new challenges whenever you have the opportunity.
00:38:06So what's next?
00:38:07Yeah, I'm always excited to try something new.
00:38:09At the moment I'm creating a women's workwear range for, you know, sick of wearing men's clothes and things that
00:38:15don't fit.
00:38:16And I think Ben and I will just keep smashing out the tiny houses, keep building them and putting them
00:38:21in unique parts of Australia for everyone to enjoy.
00:38:23I found joy in my life.
00:38:28I found joy in my life.
00:38:33I'll help you choose the perfect colour scheme for your next paint project.
00:38:38Don't have a garden bed?
00:38:39Well, I've got you covered with these raised steel planters.
00:38:44In this month's Better Homes and Gardens magazine, we've got some brilliant ideas for you.
00:38:48I mean, the weather's cooling down, but we're going to warm you up.
00:38:51Check it out, a chocolatey, gooey, caramelly, sticky date pudding.
00:38:54Or, pecan and poached pear cake.
00:38:57It's hard to say, but easy to eat, particularly with salted maple.
00:39:00Or, I like the classic, cinnamon apple crumble cake.
00:39:03Sign me up.
00:39:04And if you've still got a sweet tooth, we have five great ideas for brand new Anzac biscuits, all based
00:39:09on the classic.
00:39:10As for me, I'm working on a little bit of leek-wrapped barramundi, plus an olive-spiked lamb leg, and
00:39:16even my favourite family meal, Nonna's Meatballs.
00:39:19Absolutely brilliant.
00:39:20You're going to find all that and plenty more in the latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, and
00:39:24it's out now.
00:39:31This segment is brought to you by Dulux.
00:39:35Worth doing.
00:39:36Worth Dulux.
00:39:39Spoddy, I've told you a hundred times, no swear words.
00:39:42That's not rude.
00:39:43Nink and poop.
00:39:45Now that's rude.
00:39:46No, it's my word.
00:39:47You sure that's how you spell it?
00:39:48That's it.
00:39:49Oh.
00:39:50You can see that this room has had lots of fun times and memories created here.
00:39:55The family have been using it as a hub for games and playing music and lots of fun times, but
00:40:01it's looking a little bit dated.
00:40:02So, with some fresh paint and some furniture, we're going to make it fabulous and also functional.
00:40:07Everything I have is too heavy to hold.
00:40:19Everything I do feels out of my control.
00:40:23Everything I have is too heavy to hold.
00:40:27Everything I do feels out of my control.
00:40:29Everything I have is too heavy to hold.
00:40:30it has to be paint but choosing the exact right color can be really tricky especially if it's
00:40:36white you think white was white but no there are literally hundreds of shades of white so here i'm
00:40:41comparing three of the most popular whites at the moment i've got lexicon quarter which is a cool
00:40:47white natural white which is more of a neutral tone it's very modern and antique white usa which
00:40:53is a classic creamy tone and when you're choosing your colors in the room a great idea is to use
00:40:59these large a4 stick-on swatches that way you get a good idea of how they're going to look you
00:41:04can
00:41:04move them around the room and look at them in different light conditions you can look at them
00:41:08during the daytime in natural light or also at night time with artificial light on them and if
00:41:13you wanted to see the color over a larger area you could just use one of these great little sample
00:41:17pots for this room i think lexicon quarter is going to work the best and that's because we have
00:41:22a warm timber floor we're also bringing in some timber furniture and so this will contrast really
00:41:28nicely against that so it's not all too yellow
00:41:44before i put the color on the wall i'm just using a one-step primer sealer and undercoat
00:41:49i love you for infinity to make sure i get the true color i'm using dual-lux wash and wear
00:42:07as a
00:42:07base and i've tinted it with lexicon quarter strength
00:42:10i never understood
00:42:39i'm using this model
00:42:39thanks scotty this room is still going to be used as the fun headquarters for the family so we need
00:42:45somewhere to put all those games and books the bookshelves are in great nick but i wanted
00:42:50to give them a bit of a facelift so i'm using this modern timber trim and we've just attached
00:42:54it with some liquid adhesive and some nails
00:43:04this room didn't actually have a door here just this opening but to create more of a statement what
00:43:09i'm doing is extending the shelving across the top here and rather than just having two
00:43:13freestanding shelves it'll have a much more designer look now
00:43:18are you right there looks heavy the floor was a bit lower than i thought then
00:43:40i love you
00:43:42now it's time to get these dressed up and matching the other ones
00:43:45Don't you say that I just can't see it tonight?
00:43:52Thanks.
00:43:53Wow, this trim has made all the difference.
00:44:06The trims on the old bookshelves look pretty good,
00:44:09but I want to take it up a notch,
00:44:10so I'm going to add some arches to the very top row.
00:44:13Now, I've got some MDF, I've made a template,
00:44:16and I've just traced out a circle,
00:44:18and now all I need to do is get the jigsaw and cut it out.
00:44:34All right, so our arches are done.
00:44:37All I need to do is just give the edges a bit of a sand ready for painting.
00:44:50Now I'm just giving it an undercoat,
00:44:52and you want to make sure you get all the sides to seal the MDF.
00:45:04It's really important to give your arches a sand in between the undercoat and the topcoat,
00:45:08and that's because the MDF absorbs moisture,
00:45:11which makes the bristles stand up,
00:45:12so you want to make it nice and smooth for the topcoat.
00:45:15And for the topcoat, I'm using aqua enamel in the same colour,
00:45:18which is Lexicon Quarter Strength,
00:45:19so it ties in perfectly with the rest of the trims on the bookcase.
00:45:39I've just used some glue on these to put them in place,
00:45:41and now I've put some tape there to hold it while it dries.
00:45:45You'll also notice that I've left a gap here at the bottom,
00:45:48and that was intentional as a design detail.
00:46:06What a difference a new coat of paint makes.
00:46:09It is so much brighter and fresher in here,
00:46:11and now we're ready for the furniture and decor to come in,
00:46:13but all of that is coming up later in the show.
00:46:22Earlier in the show, we explored Natasha Morgan's magnificent garden,
00:46:26oak and monkey puzzle in the Wombat State Forest,
00:46:29and I think you'll agree with me when I say
00:46:31that it feels like we've just stepped out of the pages of a magical storybook
00:46:34with so much inspiration for your garden and home.
00:46:38And one of Natasha's great joys is bringing her garden inside
00:46:42with stunning floral displays.
00:46:45Looks like you've been doing some foraging.
00:46:47Oh, just a little bit.
00:46:49I love picking things out of the garden,
00:46:51and not just the garden, but also just around, you know,
00:46:54the country lanes and roadside.
00:46:56Some of the things that are most twisted and contorted
00:46:59and weather-beaten actually make the most beautiful things for arrangements.
00:47:02I love that you think outside the square
00:47:04when it comes to what people would think of cut flowers.
00:47:06We've got some foliage here, the hornbeam.
00:47:07We do. We've got the hornbeam as well.
00:47:09So I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to start with the hydrangea paniculata.
00:47:13I'm just going to kind of crisscross them here, as you can see.
00:47:17This one's a nice big fat one.
00:47:19Look at that.
00:47:19They're beautiful. Look at those. They're just so voluptuous.
00:47:22What I'm going to get you to do is to strip off some of these.
00:47:26Brilliant.
00:47:26OK?
00:47:27Some of them are joined at the bottom,
00:47:28and we don't need them that whole length.
00:47:30So if they are, don't worry if they sort of snap off.
00:47:33And while you're doing that, I'm going to pop some of these sedans in here.
00:47:36And I'm going to kind of just sort of bunch them in groups.
00:47:39I'm not salt and peppering them.
00:47:40I'm kind of just grouping them so that I get a nice band of them.
00:47:44So when you're choosing plants to grow in the garden,
00:47:47do you think about how good they might be as cutting flowers?
00:47:50I'm almost like testing in my mind.
00:47:52I'm like, is that going to make a good cut flower?
00:47:54And I'll also test literally.
00:47:56I'll cut them, put them in a vase, and see if they make a good cut flower.
00:47:59That's a good way of doing it. I like that.
00:48:02We'll put some roses in, take those thorns off.
00:48:04Do I use it like that?
00:48:06Yep, just a bit of elbow grease. Perfect.
00:48:08So I'm just using the beautiful hornbeam
00:48:10just as a bit of an accent of green on the back here.
00:48:16And then I have got this wonderful knack
00:48:19of being able to just hold it under my thumb,
00:48:22because I've done it a few times,
00:48:24and I just wind it around until it's nice and secure.
00:48:31We're going to do the last cut-off.
00:48:34This is where I've got to use my muscles.
00:48:37It helps to do that fresh cut too, doesn't it?
00:48:39Absolutely.
00:48:39So the plant can take up some water in the vase.
00:48:41Because we've sort of been holding this for a few minutes,
00:48:43so again, you know, we want that to be as fresh as possible.
00:48:45And there we go.
00:48:47Natasha, that is beautiful.
00:48:48Take a look at this.
00:48:49Who wouldn't want that to sit proudly in their house?
00:48:52Just amazing.
00:48:54Well, Natasha, honestly, this is such a beautiful day.
00:48:56The journey that you have gone on in creating this garden,
00:49:00just, it's a masterpiece.
00:49:01We're all going home inspired, aren't we?
00:49:03It's been such a pleasure, seriously.
00:49:04I've had the most beautiful time with you.
00:49:06I'll come back again.
00:49:14Charlie's branching out into Juliet's world.
00:49:17But are we convinced?
00:49:18A little bit of styling, some festoon lighting,
00:49:21and the garden is looking incredible.
00:49:23You need to crack a few eggs to make an omelette.
00:49:26But what about Easter eggs?
00:49:28Why don't we grab the eggs and turn them into Easter egg cupcakes?
00:49:32When you're making over a room and your walls are all white,
00:49:36you need to get creative.
00:49:38Now it's time for me to have some fun styling the room.
00:49:53We're fixing up this little courtyard
00:49:54by removing some of the common eyesores you might have.
00:49:58And I'm using these to bring in some planting.
00:50:01These are Porten steel rings.
00:50:02You can just pick them up at the hardware store.
00:50:04You see how easily they slide together.
00:50:06And then they've got some lugs on them,
00:50:07which you just push down with a screwdriver.
00:50:09I'm having one in each corner so we can get loads of plants in
00:50:12to try and screen out this block.
00:50:22It's really important if you're using an open ring planter like this
00:50:24to remove the grass underneath.
00:50:27Don't just put soil on top of it,
00:50:28otherwise the grass is going to grow back through.
00:50:30Even if it doesn't,
00:50:31it's an organic product,
00:50:32so it's going to break down
00:50:33and all your potting mix is going to sink.
00:50:35So really important to remove that.
00:50:38We're actually going to lay them on a sand cement mortar bed as well.
00:50:41That way we can get the tops perfectly level
00:50:43and they're not going to sink over time.
00:51:02For our raised planters, I really wanted to get some height in here to help screen out this ugly block.
00:51:07But if I'd gone for big trees, it would feel really heavy and make this small space feel even smaller.
00:51:13So I'm using ornamental grasses, and this is Miscanthus sinensis.
00:51:17It really likes free-draining soil, so putting it in the tallest planter is best for it.
00:51:21You can see it gets to about 1.8 meters tall,
00:51:24but it's got these really lovely flower heads on them that move around and dance in the wind.
00:51:28We're never going to screen the building out completely,
00:51:30but they just help to just baffle it just that little bit.
00:51:44In our low squat planter, I'm using a kalanchoe called Copper Spoons.
00:51:48I really love the tone of the top of the leaf here.
00:51:51It goes perfectly with our steel planter.
00:51:53As a combination, I'm using this rosemary.
00:51:56This one's a prostrate one, which means it grows really flat.
00:51:58Actually, its habit's more like waves, so it's going to spill over here,
00:52:01really soften this planter, and work perfectly with the Copper Spoons.
00:52:13For our final cluster, right by the entrance of the garden,
00:52:16I've kept with a similar theme.
00:52:18We've got the upright rosemary and the Miss Muffet,
00:52:20but in the wider planter, I'm using philodendron xanadu.
00:52:23This can take full sun, full shade.
00:52:25You pretty much can't kill this plant.
00:52:27And then I'm finishing it all off with a lovely fine gravel,
00:52:30just to give it that designer edge.
00:52:39One trick to divert your eye away from less attractive things in the garden
00:52:43is to create really attractive things, just draws the eye in.
00:52:46So along this edge of the garden space, I'm going to be putting in a garden bed.
00:52:50And on the big blank walls, I'm planting these.
00:52:52These are a variety of ileocarpus.
00:52:54Now, they're a rainforest tree, which means they don't have a particularly deep root system.
00:53:14I've got a lovely upright shape in this rosemary.
00:53:18And to contrast with it, the rounded shape of this Pytosporum Miss Muffet.
00:53:22Now, rosemary and Pytosporum really like free-draining soils,
00:53:25which is handy because we've got quite sandy soil here.
00:53:27The rosemary I've placed under the window, so the fragrance can travel inside.
00:53:32And the Miss Muffets, they get a really lovely, sweet, fake orange smell to the blossom.
00:53:36They're going to fill out and form these lovely mounds.
00:53:38And it's the contrast between the rounded and the upright that I really love.
00:53:58A little bit of styling, some festoon lighting, and the garden is looking incredible.
00:54:03Can you remember what this looked like when we first got here?
00:54:05It was uninviting, and nobody wanted to spend any time out here.
00:54:12The bins, well, we've screened those. They've gone.
00:54:17The veggie patch has been updated and makes you want to get your hands in the dirt.
00:54:21And we didn't really do anything about the building,
00:54:23but who cares when you've got an amazing garden like this?
00:54:26This is the perfect spot for outdoor living.
00:54:36The most important part of perfecting your cupcake icing is to make sure the flavour's right.
00:54:42What? It's part of the process.
00:54:45To catch up on any stories you've missed, or to watch them again,
00:54:49plus exclusive Better Homes and Gardens content,
00:54:51jump onto our website, bhg.com.au.
00:54:54It's better!
00:55:03Easter isn't just the tastiest holiday of the year.
00:55:05It's also kind of the cutest as well, isn't it?
00:55:07But if you're planning to do a little Easter celebration for the kids,
00:55:10why not take the eggs up a notch?
00:55:12Why don't we grab the eggs and turn them into Easter egg cupcakes?
00:55:17Super easy.
00:55:19Ask anyone who's tried to take a birthday cake to a blue sky party,
00:55:23and they'll tell you the same thing.
00:55:25The icing melts. It's a total disaster. No one wants a pool cake.
00:55:29Unless you're having a pool party, of course.
00:55:30But I'm going to show you a secret, a way of making sure that your icing is perfect.
00:55:35We're not going to use butter.
00:55:36We're actually going to use one part of margarine and one part of kofa.
00:55:40That's coconut oil, and it's really stable.
00:55:42What you want to do is put those into a bowl and give them a really good whisk.
00:55:48The lighter you make it at this stage, the better the quality of your icing.
00:55:52But that said, it's actually easier to do than it is to do with butter,
00:55:55because it's a little bit more stretchy.
00:55:57So by hand, it should take you just a few minutes.
00:56:04Oh, it's looking good.
00:56:05Now, you can see how beautiful and light I've managed to get it.
00:56:08That's great.
00:56:09You don't need to overwork it, though.
00:56:10Next, we need to sweeten things up.
00:56:12Two and a half cups of icing mixture.
00:56:14Throw it in there, but when you go to stir it,
00:56:16do yourself a favour and take it a bit easy.
00:56:19You don't want to wear half of it.
00:56:26As for flavour, instead of vanilla, I'm going with lemon essence.
00:56:30It's a beautiful, fresh, delicious way to flavour up your icing.
00:56:34Perfect for a sunny day.
00:56:37Towards the end, it does become a little bit of hard work.
00:56:40But if you've got teenagers, that's what they're for.
00:56:42You need to make sure that the flavour's good.
00:56:46Hold on, I'm not quite sure yet.
00:56:49Alright, yeah, it's good.
00:56:51And then we can load that into a piping bag.
00:57:08And then, to make it even prettier, this is just desiccated coconut.
00:57:12Now, be careful, you don't want to lose the icing.
00:57:14Maybe, maybe believe in the rain, love, save me, sweet on the leaves.
00:57:21But the day you set me wrong, the song couldn't go on and on and on.
00:57:25Here we lie, here we cheat.
00:57:27Next up, we're going to grab some sweetened condensed milk
00:57:30and a little bit of yellow food colouring.
00:57:32What's going on?
00:57:33You'll find out.
00:57:43Look, I'm no interior designer, but that is a beautiful colour.
00:57:47We're going to use that in just a minute.
00:57:48First up, you're going to need some of these.
00:57:50These are white, hollow Easter eggs.
00:57:53And before we start munching on them, we do need to use them.
00:57:56You will have to either smash them or, even better,
00:57:58use a little knife and just crack them a bit.
00:58:01Because what we want to do is to create a broken or cracked Easter egg.
00:58:09Once you've done very careful surgery on your Easter eggs...
00:58:13Oops, a bit tougher.
00:58:14There you go.
00:58:15So, you're going to grab a small spoon and make an indentation
00:58:20in the centre of each of your cupcakes.
00:58:25Then, then you're going to grab your Easter egg and pop it on.
00:58:36Now, remember, these are supposed to look like an egg that has just hatched.
00:58:41So, you get your big bit and then you want some, I don't know,
00:58:43some small bits around it.
00:58:46As for any offcuts, yeah, they are fair game.
00:58:56Half of them, we're going to put a little bit of your yellow,
00:58:58sweetened, condensed milk.
00:59:00That's the egg yolk.
00:59:02And the other half, you're going to use one of these little baby chicks
00:59:07that are everywhere at this time of the year.
00:59:09So, these are for the carnivores and those are for the vegetarians.
00:59:25The entrance to a home always needs a few wow pieces
00:59:28and this certainly fits the bill.
00:59:32In this month's issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine,
00:59:35learn how to plant, grow and display dahlias, my favourite flowers.
00:59:41They come in all shapes and sizes and colours.
00:59:43We share top tips and tricks to turn your apartment balcony
00:59:47into a captivating garden.
00:59:49Plus, your essential guide to different types of secateurs,
00:59:52from trimming houseplants to cutting back woody stems.
00:59:56It's all in the new issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.
01:00:00Out now.
01:00:11Earlier, I updated this much-loved family room
01:00:14with some new paint and a contemporary shelving unit.
01:00:17And now, it's time for me to have some fun styling the room.
01:00:20I want to feel it all.
01:00:23I want to feel it all.
01:00:26I want to feel it all.
01:00:29I need to breathe.
01:00:35Slow it down.
01:00:36Thanks, Greg.
01:00:38Because we've got a white backdrop in here,
01:00:40I wanted to add in some texture for visual interest.
01:00:42So, I've got this beautiful woven rug on the floor.
01:00:45And over here, we've just added in these
01:00:47really luxurious-looking leather ottomans.
01:00:49Now, these are going to be great for extra seating.
01:00:52And as they are next to each other like this,
01:00:54they're going to work perfectly as a daybed.
01:00:56They also draw the colour of the timber across the room.
01:00:59I need you to love me more.
01:01:03Love me more.
01:01:05I love me more.
01:01:06I need you to love me more.
01:01:10Love me more.
01:01:12I love me more.
01:01:13The table I've chosen has a marble pedestal base.
01:01:16And this is for a couple of reasons.
01:01:18One is it's really practical to allow space underneath,
01:01:20but also it gives that very high-end hotel feel.
01:01:24Because this is the first room that you walk past
01:01:26when you walk into the house,
01:01:27so we want to make first impressions count.
01:01:29And then this top is metal,
01:01:30which is a very contemporary look.
01:01:55Can you believe this is the old table from the original room?
01:01:59It looks so much cooler now,
01:02:00and in an upcoming episode,
01:02:01I'm going to show you in detail how you can make it yourself.
01:02:04I'm also popping on here the homeowner's old vintage record player
01:02:08because how cool is it?
01:02:10I think now I might put some music on to style the room.
01:02:30When I'm a-walkin', I start my stop,
01:02:33and I'm so slung out.
01:02:35I'm high as a kite,
01:02:36I just might stop to check you out.
01:02:39Let me go on,
01:02:42like I'm just doing the sun.
01:02:44Let me go on,
01:02:47big hands, I know you're the one.
01:02:56Music is really important to the family that lives here,
01:02:59so I needed to find somewhere for the guitars
01:03:01that wasn't front and centre,
01:03:03and I've created this perfect little nook for them
01:03:05by shifting the bookshelf along
01:03:07so it's in line with the doorway.
01:03:09I've left the shelving units
01:03:11for contrast against the white,
01:03:12their original colour,
01:03:13but I have painted above this entryway here in white,
01:03:17and that is so that it seems higher and larger
01:03:20and overall a little bit more grand.
01:03:27Music
01:03:28Cast your mind back to this room how it was before.
01:03:30It was colourful and cluttered,
01:03:32but now it's so much lighter
01:03:34and brighter and much more modern.
01:03:36For the table here I chose a round one
01:03:39and that is for traffic flow,
01:03:40so it allows for movement around the room
01:03:43and will also allow the homeowners
01:03:44to play their much-loved games in here.
01:03:47To break up all the white in the room
01:03:49I brought in this really chic print
01:03:51which introduces a lovely shade of green.
01:03:54And then my favourite features in here,
01:03:56these two ottomans which are so inviting.
01:03:58I've also included a lamp here
01:04:00so that if the homeowners want to read at night,
01:04:01it's the perfect space to do that.
01:04:03And you'll remember there were lots of books
01:04:05and games in here.
01:04:06Well, I haven't gotten rid of them
01:04:07because they were a really important part of the room.
01:04:10But what I've done is just concentrate them on one wall,
01:04:13creating like a little mini library
01:04:15and leaving these beautiful new open shelves
01:04:17for all the gorgeous objects on display.
01:04:20If I fall on my break,
01:04:22but I'll find my way
01:04:24Cause the deeper, the red, the sweeter the taste
01:04:31Let the lover be bright
01:04:51Well, Amy, I reckon the perfect end to the perfect day
01:04:53would be us sitting around this fire pit
01:04:55if it wasn't over 30 degrees right now.
01:04:57You're so right.
01:04:57I am sweltering here.
01:04:59I could basically fry an egg on it.
01:05:01Hey, listen, I love that you're flying the flag for lady tradies.
01:05:04And also, I'm really enamoured with what you're doing with Tiny Stays.
01:05:07Oh, thank you.
01:05:07I just love the idea of people coming here,
01:05:09immersing themselves in nature,
01:05:11getting back to off-grid.
01:05:13It's just beautiful.
01:05:14Yeah, I couldn't have said it better myself.
01:05:15I hope that you've enjoyed getting to know Amy and her story
01:05:17and we'll see you next week with more Better Homes and Gardens.
01:05:19Bye-bye.
01:05:24Next time, we honour Anzac Day
01:05:27by helping one very special veteran.
01:05:30This is Reg, guys, who is a living legend.
01:05:32He is the last of the Kokoda Trail diggers.
01:05:37There's nothing more satisfying
01:05:38than pulling off a difficult recipe.
01:05:41But even Karen knows sometimes simple is best.
01:05:45I love a one-pot wonder as well.
01:05:49Ed's created a healthy snack your kids will love.
01:05:53Surely there's a catch.
01:05:55Once your kids get an eyeful of this,
01:05:57I don't think they're going to last very long at all.
01:06:00Graham wants to take you to Japan,
01:06:03right here in Australia.
01:06:05Amongst all these trees and shrubs,
01:06:07one of my all-time favourite plants,
01:06:09the Japanese maples.
01:06:12Painting might be everyone's least favourite DIY job,
01:06:15but Juliet's got some tips and tricks
01:06:18that might change that.
01:06:19Hopefully I've helped take the pain out of painting.
01:06:22And when Harry met Salem...
01:06:24Dead ahead there, Harry.
01:06:25Doing well, mate.
01:06:27Prove that when vets join forces,
01:06:29good things happen.
01:06:31I'm going on a boat.
01:06:32This boat.
01:06:33With Tex and his crew of vets
01:06:35and his dog.
01:06:37That's next time on Better Homes and Gardens.
