00:00all right it is wei 93 7 6 1 7 7 7 7 9 7 9 3 7 it's rich
00:05ken and we've got christian arcannon for ted
00:08johnson and uh a gentleman who i i love having on the show and i apologize because i i i
00:14totally
00:14gave him a a previous title the respect on the man's name celtics beat writer for si.com
00:23the same sports illustrator that i got a football phone from back in the day
00:27and the locked on celtics host my man john corrales what's going on john that's how i get paid in
00:34football phones now that's right was there a better day when you were a kid than when you got
00:40like the free subscription uh or the free like like like like what they used to have a football phone
00:46there were other gifts what were the other sports illustrated tchotchkes that you had sent with a
00:50free subscription oh there was there was some kind of like commemorative cup i remember right wasn't
00:56there i believe so always some sort of yeah some some kind of stuff like that there was always like
01:01some oh god like a calendar i don't know man i just i just remember loving all that stuff there
01:06was all
01:06kinds of crazy free stuff well congrats on and i know that you know you've obviously been doing this
01:11for a while but it is cool that you're with si uh right now and and i want to start
01:15off john
01:16with a question that's going to seem absurd but it is strange how opinions have changed on this
01:23since game seven what was your opinion of the starting five that joe missoula threw out there
01:30um i thought it was obviously kind of wild like a bunch of us were sitting there um at dinner
01:38and that came out and we're all looking at each other like what is joe doing um my my my
01:47feeling was
01:48that theoretically he was going for speed and shooting uh to make up for like whatever they
01:58were going to try to do defensively on jaylen brown he wanted you know with with ron harper and was
02:05it
02:05baylor shireman and luca garza along with derrick white like he wanted shooting all over the place
02:10guys that knew how to play guys that moved fast guys that had some defensive acumen minus luca garza
02:16but i think he wanted to play fast and theoretically have shooting all over the place now i know it
02:22was
02:22a little bit crazy but we're going to remember ron harper had like two really good games against san
02:28antonio and oklahoma city back in march so it wasn't outrageous that he was in there and to joe's
02:34credit when it wasn't working he pulled he pulled harper four minutes into the game and said all right
02:39we got to go a different direction so um it was no doubt a little bit on the wild side
02:45there was a
02:45little bit of desperation to that because tatum was out i i didn't think it was absurd but i
02:53understand why like that that was certainly an eyebrow razor oh yeah i mean to me i you didn't need
02:59to say anything more than they've never played a minute together and then joe started him in game
03:04seven like it just i know and i don't know if that's like was that joe just the roster he
03:11had
03:11you know like we got to remember that this roster was never made to to do this right they changed
03:19the
03:19expectations they changed the narrative and that's to their credit but this roster was never supposed
03:26to be like okay this is how this is the group of guys you want to win you a game
03:30seven under extreme
03:32circumstances yeah i i mean it's and we all the the we can i know that you could say it's
03:38it's all
03:39uh revisionist history we can go back and now we're on the other side of it and go of course
03:42it
03:42was bad but we all knew it was awful when it first started it was like i i i did
03:47my pat myself on the
03:48back a little bit here and there's not there was nothing inside of me that said this is going to
03:51work and damn it i think we were all right well john um percentage chance that jalen brown is still
03:58a member of the boston celtics come the beginning of next season i still think that's pretty a pretty
04:03high chance like no i'm i'm gonna say that it's probably in that 85 percent range leaving leaving
04:1015 percent of the natural uncertainty uh you know given the situation given what he's you know there's
04:19a little bit of that eyebrow raising with him as well i understand why people are are on this kind
04:26of
04:26path right now uh but i i don't think that's anything more than uh his frustration with a lot
04:34of other things uh and and i think from a team perspective beyond all of this even if we want
04:42to
04:42say hey this maybe this relationship is there's something more to it uh i don't know what path there
04:49is out of it that makes perfect sense for the celtics to go in a different direction i think that
04:55that has
04:55to be considered as well so very high chance that jalen is back now having said that john you were
05:01first on yannis watch that i saw anywhere you carved up the plan for hauser pritchard and white and made
05:06the money work where are you now on yannis uh look i think there's there's some there's something to
05:14that if you can get yannis um to pair with katom and brown that's something you you want to take
05:22a
05:22look at now you are kind of gutting a lot of your premier role players and if you do that
05:29you have
05:30to have confidence that baylor shireman and ugo gonzalez and jordan walsh are capable of filling those
05:36roles to some degree um the only problem with yannis is that he's he's a non-shooter and so he'll
05:44get
05:44treated as such and he's he's becoming injury prone and and that that is a concern and if you're
05:53going to give up guys that have elite roles especially derrick white because he's so impactful
05:58defensively you have to feel comfortable that if yannis does have an extended injury that the guys
06:05you have are going to be able to make up for that and so that i have a little bit
06:09of worry on that
06:09um i also you you always have to take into account what is milwaukee trying to accomplish
06:16if they trade for if they trade yannis away if they're trying to accomplish a rebuild and starting
06:24over then then the guys that the celtics have don't that that doesn't work even jalen brown that
06:29doesn't work the guys that the celtics have to move for yannis are more win now pieces either you find
06:36another number one guy and that derrick white sam hauser peyton pritchard package is great support
06:43around that person or you're trading for jalen brown and you're going with a number one option
06:49and you're trying to win built around jalen brown so if they're trying to win now great but if they're
06:54not then the celtics are not a trade partner john let's assume that next year whatever happens on the
07:01on the sidelines it's still a team centered around jalen brown and jason tatum with other moves being
07:06guys sort of beneath them what are the odds are there odds even that jalen brown would give this
07:11team back to jason tatum um i i don't know if i look at it that way um i think
07:20that the the team is
07:21going to be built how it's built and i think tatum and brown are just going to kind of be
07:25seen
07:26well i'm from brown's perspective i think they're going to be seen as equals and so i i don't know
07:32about giving the team to anybody in particular it's going to be how the team kind of approaches that
07:38because there's going to be moments for both guys where they're on the floor um leading without the
07:45other one there so i think i i know what you guys are trying to say i just don't look
07:51at it in in that
07:53way i think especially considering how this season is gone i think that next season there's going to
07:59have to be a little bit more kind of split responsibilities between the two of them and
08:04that that's going to be the best way that the celtics approach that situation you can't do it as
08:10clear number one clear number two if you know what i mean well it will jalen brown be okay with
08:15that even
08:17well he has to be i mean that that's and so does jason jason has to be like they both
08:22have to
08:22understand that this is the best way for things to work so um if they're not then that's something
08:30that's going to have to be communicated now and then we're going to have to talk about the trade
08:33situation like if they're when they both walk into camp they will be both walking into camp with this
08:40as the directive you know i mean like that that's not something when november 1st comes around joe's
08:47going to sit them down and be like okay by the way like that's something that's a conversation that's
08:51happening now right they're all getting together now and having that conversation if people if
08:57anybody's not cool with it then fine okay you're not cool with it we're going to move on to something
09:02else well well i mean it's it's wild too because you know the problem i think that the i guess
09:10the
09:10confusion that i have about jalen brown is tracy mcgrady goes on this podcast and starts talking
09:17about that jalen brown has a problem deep inside the organization with somebody deep inside the
09:23organization or something that's going on with the celtics and tracy mcgrady from what everyone has
09:28been saying is a mentor for jalen brown and that you know when you hear that coming from him you're
09:33like
09:33well where did he get it we obviously had to get it from jalen brown what problem do you think
09:37jalen brown could possibly have deep within the celtics organization ah you know that's that's a
09:46great question because i don't know what that what that could be maybe maybe the frustration is
09:53how the team played when jason came back maybe maybe he is frustrated that the team kind of went
10:00a little more jason centric a little a little quickly um or or slowed down or whatever like
10:09i i don't know that the issue is with anybody in the front office i think he might be frustrated
10:17maybe with some of the coaching decisions and that's something that he and joe are probably kind
10:22of talking through like that that's where i think if he has any frustrations probably more coaching
10:27than it is front office because the front office gave them these players and um unless he has an
10:34issue with uh the anthony simons trade which i doubt uh it's it's more a stylistic thing and
10:43that when you look at what jalen brown has been saying he's been talking about oh the analytics and
10:49and you know we you know you got to throw out the analytics and he's really on a big like
10:52anti-analytics
10:53kick um he wants to play the way he plays he wants to take a bunch of mid-range jumpers
10:58and
10:58and stuff like that and i think maybe since jason came back he probably felt like he was
11:04a little too standing in the corner kind of guy um so that's probably a little bit of frustration there
11:09but again wow so so hang on so that's interesting i'm sorry john that's interesting so you so you you
11:15are you think that his problem might be man we were doing really well when it was just me and
11:22i was the
11:22man and you could have let tatum continue to heal but you guys brought him back in and it changed
11:28everything that i was doing so you think that that might be the issue that he has within the
11:34organization is that they probably shouldn't have brought tatum back as much as they did
11:38well it's not that they shouldn't have brought tatum back i think he wanted tatum to come back
11:44i i think he probably was expecting like the rest of us were expecting tatum to come back and be
11:51more
11:51of a supporting player for the rest of this year like honestly i don't think he has a problem with
11:55tatum i don't think he has a problem even with the style of play when tatum is is around necessarily
12:02it's just that i think he thought that this year was his year and you know what i mean like
12:09yeah i do
12:11think that there's some of that here now that doesn't mean that he's not going to be like hey when
12:18tatum is here we got to play a certain way and i'm cool with it but i do think that
12:22there's a
12:23little bit of the frustration of man we're doing everything the way i loved it and then tatum came
12:29back and it's it's not the way it's not the way i thought it would go and listen i think
12:36that's
12:36natural i don't think that i think a lot of situations in in sports kind of go this way and
12:43we never hear about it i think the problem is that tracy mcgrady vocalized it and this is just
12:48one of those something that frustrated a player that he went and talked to a guy that he trusted
12:54and that just should have been the end of it and the guy that he trusted went out there and
12:59expressed this and now we're we're all forced to talk about it and that inherently i think makes it
13:05a bigger deal than it actually is but i understand why we're talking about it and why it sounds bad
13:10john do you think do you believe the medical staff took the decision out of tatum's hands for game
13:16seven and was it weird that jalen didn't find out until 45 minutes before the game uh i do think
13:23that
13:23it was taken out of jason's hands because he probably wanted to play and you got it in that situation
13:33i think you have to take it out of the players hands um do you think that's what the denzel
13:39washington uh instagram post was about last night that jayla that jason tatum put out there
13:44i i don't know man i like i saw that thing and like i can't tell if that's just
13:52if that is because everything an athlete does we all think there's a meaning behind it
13:57how many times how many times have we been on like instagram at one in the morning like oh i
14:02like this this is true i'm just gonna repost this it could be innocuous i i really have no idea
14:08if
14:08that's what it's about uh he could have just been scrolling like doing scrolling at a week um you
14:15know a couple of drinks and i'm like i like this i'm gonna share it like who knows
14:19he's got a normal person scrolls instagram right yeah right i mean the guy does have a tattoo of
14:25denzel washington on his leg so you know he obviously likes the guy so sure put one of
14:29his interviews out there why not sure yeah i don't know man i can't dive into the heads of
14:35everything an athlete posts on social media because you can drive yourself crazy i know i said that
14:42earlier i was just like you know it's like because some athletes just want you to like oh i bet
14:47everyone's gonna be talking about it what does it mean what does it i just really wish people would
14:51just say what they mean and then you know all right there's there's none of this i i it does
14:56drive me crazy but then again here we are talking about it so there we go right right like listen
15:01we're we're talking about what a 29 year old guy posted on on a social media site like right so
15:08it's
15:08like i don't know maybe he meant something by it maybe he didn't right exactly well well john this is
15:14going to be an interesting offseason and and the and especially because there's now like some reports as i
15:18said i i don't know how much cred the guy from clutch points has who ended up putting this report
15:23out there but he's saying that i don't even know if this really means a lot that brad stevens is
15:28exploring the trade market for jalen brown i would think that you'd be doing a bad job as a gm
15:34if you
15:34didn't know what every single one of your players is worth but then again i don't know how many times
15:38you know like there's there's teams that have a superstar player and they're exploring the trade market
15:44for him you know what i mean it just seems like there's certain players that you wouldn't do that for
15:47but either way it's going to be very very strange it ended so oddly and and jalen keeps running his
15:54mouth and you got all these other guys like it just it's it's all strange so john thanks for like
16:00collecting all the crap and ciphering it and making sense out of all of it for us i feel like
16:07that's
16:07kind of my job like i think i should join whatever union the sanitation guys are in just just because
16:13i think that it applies oh man oh by the way corrales this is something that i was uh texted
16:19during that break the football phone and the introduction of it ended up getting uh sports
16:25illustrated an extra 1.5 million subscriptions when it rolled out it almost saved sports illustrated
16:31the invention of the football phone wow wow oh well let's reintroduce that so i can ask for a raise
16:38that's right you can thank a four dollar piece of plastic for the job that you have right now
16:43i love it all right congrats john we'll talk to you again soon thanks john this is john corrales from
