00:01Empty shop units owned by Tesco and Gateshead have been described as a blight on the town
00:05centre by a local MP who has launched a petition. Mark Ferguson, MP for Gateshead Central and
00:11Wickham, says several units around Trinity Square have stood empty for years and should
00:16be brought back into use for local businesses, pop-ups and for market stalls. He says the
00:23situation has left parts of the centre underused despite footfall from the supermarket, cinema
00:28and remaining traders. Tesco says it remains committed to Gateshead and is in ongoing
00:33negotiations with potential tenants for several of the vacant units. They say they are open to
00:39discussions with the MP about attracting further business.
