00:21One
00:27mistake out here could be the difference between life
00:29and death. You have no idea what you're going
00:31to encounter.
00:35People come up here
00:36when they're on the run.
00:37It's through there! And we'll find them.
00:39The allure to Alaska is just how wild
00:41it can be.
00:42Stop! Or you're going to get tasers!
00:47Stop! Stop!
00:49It's Alaska State Troopers.
00:50You're on their left.
00:52Oh, stop.
00:54You don't have a boring day as a State Trooper in Alaska.
00:56Stop fire! Stop fire!
00:57Over the round shot! State Troopers!
00:59Do not move!
01:00Let me see your hand.
01:00Hands down!
01:16McAfee radio check.
01:17Here.
01:18I'm Trooper Scott McAfee.
01:20I've been with the Alaska State Troopers for a little over 10 years.
01:25A few years before I became a Trooper, I was living out of state, making a run at professional
01:29fighting, and ultimately decided to stay here in Alaska and applied to the State Troopers.
01:36The last four years have been with the criminal suppression unit as a K-9 handler with K-9 Kenny.
01:43Hey, buddy.
01:44Welcome out.
01:45Good boy.
01:47About six months ago, we retired him out of patrol work, and he's just doing narcotics detection now.
01:54He's a four-odor dog, so he detects for the odors of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.
02:05Traffic's done.
02:06Traffic's done.
02:06What?
02:0610th Avenue, no phones. Vehicle's still not stopping.
02:09We're continuing at normal speed.
02:10It's going to 17, but he's not stopping.
02:12He knows I'm behind him.
02:18Trooper Chernus actually failed to yield right now.
02:22Vehicle's expired.
02:23Metastasiners exited.
02:2510-4, I'm almost there.
02:27I'm going to curl in for sure.
02:29Use your 40.
02:30Good.
02:3110, 10, 10.
02:41Get in front of me.
02:42Get in front of me.
02:44Get in front of me.
02:57Get in front of me.
02:58Get in front of me.
03:00Get in front of me.
03:00We're reaching.
03:00Drop us off.
03:05He's reaching something.
03:08Stop it, or you're going to get tasered.
03:10Stop.
03:10You're going to get tasered.
03:11We got here.
03:12Okay, okay.
03:13Taser, taser.
03:13Stop, stop.
03:14Put your hands on your back right now, or you're going to get tasered.
03:16Stop, wait.
03:24Get your leg out.
03:25Nobody's choking.
03:26No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:27Stand up.
03:28Stand up.
03:29Stop it.
03:30Let's go.
03:31Come on.
03:31I was going to speed limit.
03:33Hold on.
03:34You got a thorn on your neck.
03:35Just show stuff.
03:36I'm going to get this off it, dude.
03:39OK.
03:39Let's go.
03:41You guys are with me all the time.
03:44I can't even sleep.
03:48Help!
03:49Stop.
03:49Stop.
03:49What the did I do?
03:51Huh?
03:53Explain to me.
03:54All right, piece of the car.
03:58Hey, that's my money.
04:00I just cashed a check.
04:02It's a bag of my money.
04:04OK.
04:04Well, hang on to it, man.
04:06You're fine.
04:10I didn't do anything!
04:13Help!
04:14Traffic trains.
04:15Can we see if anybody can go to Cushman and try to identify the
04:17passengers that jumped out of the car?
04:19It's got a large amount of cash.
04:22That's interesting.
04:24A little drug bag.
04:27Some more cash.
04:29Trooper Ternus tried to do a traffic stop on that vehicle.
04:32Failed the yield initially at a low speed.
04:34Had three or four passengers.
04:36Foot bail.
04:36But they did a pit.
04:38Successful pit.
04:38I was going to swing around and pin the vehicle.
04:40But he foot bailed out the driver's side door and we caught him in the woods right over
04:45there.
04:46Yeah, he tried to jump it and then he ate it.
04:48Yeah.
04:49He's not as athletic as he thought he was.
04:52No, not quite.
04:54Yeah, it all worked out.
04:55Another one goes to jail.
05:14I'm Trooper Ternus, been a Trooper in Fairbanks for a little over a year now.
05:19We have a pretty large area that we patrol and we only have so many troopers working each
05:26shift.
05:27Everybody kind of has their own thing.
05:29That's one of the cool things about this job is you do have a decent amount of freedom
05:33to kind of focus on what you like to do in the job.
05:36So, a lot of what I like to do is try to look for people with warrants, look for drugs,
05:42trying to locate these people and get them off the street and letting the justice system
05:46kind of take over.
05:47I see that as a big positive for the community.
05:55What?
05:56I think I figured out who the driver of that car was.
06:01I saw this vehicle, recognized the registered owner of it, did some digging into the plate.
06:05His girlfriend, the girl he's with all the time.
06:07Her name is .
06:09We have had a lot of issues with her.
06:12Ran her information.
06:13It looks like she's got a no bail warrant for burglary one.
06:18It has to do with her probation.
06:20We can go swing my opioids and see if that's where she's headed.
06:26It's her boyfriend .
06:42What's up, man?
06:43Yeah.
06:43What's up, man?
06:44Where'd you go?
06:45Huh?
06:45Where'd you go?
06:46Where'd you go?
06:48Is there a problem?
06:50So, here's the deal, man.
06:52She's got a warrant.
06:53What?
06:54Yeah, yeah.
06:54We're going to have to get that dink care of tonight.
06:56It looked like that was probably her driving.
06:57I know she's likely inside.
06:59We don't need any issues from you.
07:01You don't want to catch a hindering prosecution charge or anything like that.
07:04Right?
07:05We're going to need to take care of it.
07:06I'm going to wait until my partner gets here.
07:10And...
07:11.
07:15Do you mind if I go inside?
07:17Do you mind if I go inside?
07:20Yeah, go in.
07:24I saw a glimpse of somebody.
07:26I'm guessing...
07:26Was that her?
07:27Was there anybody else in there?
07:29Sure.
07:30Yeah, I'll do it.
07:31Sure.
07:31Frank's my tent.
07:32She's inside.
07:33Door opened.
07:34I saw a glimpse of somebody.
07:35Most likely her.
07:36Then she went back in and locked the door.
07:44It's the Alaska State Troopers.
07:46You have a warrant.
07:47We want to do this peacefully.
07:48Please come out so we can deal with it.
07:51We don't want to cause any damage to the residents.
07:53So please come out peacefully so we can deal with it.
07:59I don't think she's coming out.
08:01She's not being cooperative.
08:02I'm going to wait until we have one or two more units here.
08:04But if she's not going to work with us,
08:06we're not going to be able to work with her.
08:08Please.
08:11Can I look and see what she's texting you?
08:13Do you mind if I look?
08:14Yeah.
08:16Tell them I'll laugh.
08:19She's not responding to me at the door,
08:22texting him that she's not going to jail.
08:28So she's got a no bail for Burnley 1.
08:31I knew this was their car.
08:32I know this is her boyfriend.
08:34He was trying to talk her out.
08:35She wouldn't come out.
08:35I tried to talk her out.
08:36She won't come out.
08:37Should we go in there and get her out of there?
08:39I don't want you to break the door.
08:40I just got in there.
08:42Hey, do us anyway.
08:44I can have a couple of minutes to talk to her.
08:48Yeah, you'll have a few minutes.
08:49But if she's not going to cooperate,
08:51we're going to have to go in and get her.
08:54Come on, baby.
08:55You got to open the door.
08:57She's got a lot of DVD history.
08:59She's got a lot of drug history.
09:01Last February, she was supposed to infect an machine
09:04at a bowling alley in Fairbanks.
09:07Once we get that type of information,
09:08it definitely changes how we're going to end up approaching it.
09:11Please.
09:12I don't need them kicking in my door.
09:16No, they're not leaving.
09:21We're having a few more guys come out here,
09:23and then we're going to go in and arrest her.
09:25Oh, shoot.
09:29She's currently a suspect in a shooting.
09:32If she does have a gun, I'd be ready for that.
09:36Hib's coming over with a shield and a pepper ball gun.
09:39So we'll have somebody on the shield of lethal overwatch
09:43over the right shoulder, less lethal over the left shoulder.
09:46We'll have unarmed behind.
09:49It's pretty common, especially in a situation like this,
09:51to make sure that we have our long guns.
09:53We also have less lethal options like pepper ball
09:55just to try to make sure that we're handling the situation
09:57as safely as we can.
09:59You're going to go with me in the middle.
10:00I'm going to be over your left shoulder.
10:01Trinity's going to do it with your right shoulder.
10:03You're on it.
10:04Ready?
10:04Good.
10:04Right on you.
10:09Great troopers.
10:20Since she's not willing to come out,
10:22and this is a fairly high-level warrant,
10:23what I'm going to end up doing is go into the residence
10:26and end up arresting her.
10:30Make sure that barrel is sticking
10:32the way forward to him.
10:33Yes, elastic state troopers.
10:36Come to the door now.
10:38Perfect.
10:38We're moving into the apartment.
10:41Hey, I see you in the bathroom.
10:43I see you under the sink.
10:46If you don't come out right now,
10:47you're going to have pepper powder used against you.
10:49Come out now.
10:55Come out now, or I'm going to shoot it again.
11:00Come out now.
11:03Step outside.
11:04Come out now.
11:07Come out now.
11:07I'm too salty.
11:13All right, ma'am.
11:15Come on.
11:16Come on.
11:16Sit down once you're here.
11:19Every time you contact someone with a warrant,
11:20you just never know how motivated someone will be
11:22to not go to jail.
11:23We could see that she's hiding under a cupboard
11:24underneath the sink.
11:26We kept giving her commands.
11:27She wouldn't come out.
11:28She wouldn't come out.
11:29Warned her a few times,
11:30then ended up pepper-balling the cupboard.
11:32Ultimately, she ended up opening the doors.
11:33The entire room is full of pepper-ball,
11:35so we went in and put her in handcuffs,
11:36and now she's going to jail.
11:54Activated all two to 19 to this ready area of Middle Lake.
11:59The driver stopped the vehicle as a ten-32 unit.
12:06It appears to be two cars stopped.
12:08Somebody's got a gun, and there's a lot of screaming going on.
12:11Sounds like maybe somebody got upset for what happened on the road
12:14and forced the other driver to stop.
12:16It does sound like someone at least brandished a firearm.
12:19A lot of people carry some kind of weapon when they're out in the outdoors,
12:23so we routinely deal with people who are armed.
12:26If they pointed the gun at the complainant,
12:29that would probably be a felony assault.
12:32Two is out front of the Sussex residence.
12:36We've got eyes on the suspect's driveway, so we'll see how this goes.
12:49Hey! Hey! Hey!
12:52Show me your hands! Show me your hands!
12:54Come towards me!
12:55For what?
12:55Turn around. Turn around.
12:57For what?
12:58Walk backwards towards me.
13:00For what?
13:00Walk backwards towards me.
13:02I will tell you in a minute!
13:04Walk backwards towards me!
13:06Stop.
13:07Widen your stance.
13:09Don't move.
13:10Put your hands in the small on your back.
13:15What am I being arrested for?
13:17You're not being arrested for anything.
13:18You're being detained right now.
13:20For what?
13:21Because we need to talk to you.
13:23All right, bud.
13:23Did anything happen while you were on your way home?
13:25Uh, yeah, there was a red truck that tried to run me off the road.
13:30So I was like, what the heck?
13:32I gotta talk to these guys, because that's like uncalled for.
13:36I'm not the type of person that likes to leave that stuff unsettled.
13:40So I pulled up to their house to talk to them, and they started yelling at me.
13:43And so I drove away, and they started chasing me.
13:47All right, so let me get this straight.
13:48The truck tries to run you off the road.
13:50Yes.
13:51And then you followed them.
13:52Yes, I followed them.
13:54Did you have a gun in your hand at that time?
13:56Because when they followed me up the road after that altercation, I pulled it out.
14:01And you got out of your car again?
14:02Yes.
14:02This time you had the gun in your hand?
14:04Gun drawn, yeah.
14:05So did you ever, like, come up, you know, even if the gun was down, did you bring it up
14:09in their direction at all?
14:10I could have.
14:11I couldn't tell you for sure.
14:12If I did, it was unintentional, and I talk with my hands a lot.
14:17All right, so for right now, take a seat in this car back here, okay?
14:20We still gotta source some stuff out.
14:22All right.
14:23So we're gonna go take a look at these firearms.
14:25Our other troopers have those secured.
14:27We had the report, basically, road rage kind of incident that resulted in one person pulling a gun on the
14:32other.
14:33Interviewed him, and he's corroborated the whole story.
14:35He was pointing the gun at the vehicle with multiple people in it.
14:38So it's not looking good for him.
14:40He's probably gonna go to jail today.
14:42There's three guns, not two.
14:43He said it was the 9mm.
14:45Which one?
14:47Which one was it?
14:49Oh, there was three in there.
14:50I am so sorry.
14:51I forgot.
14:52The pink one and the black one.
14:55And, like, one in each hand?
14:56Oh, yeah.
14:58He said I talked with my hands.
14:59It might have come up towards them, but I kept the barrel towards the ground.
15:02Well, that's a problem for him.
15:03I agree.
15:04I think he's probably good to go for the A3.
15:07Yeah, I'd agree.
15:09Right now, you're being placed under arrest for five counts of assault in the third degree, okay?
15:12Because there are five people in that car, right?
15:13There are a couple kids, right?
15:15Assault?
15:16Assault, yeah.
15:17For what?
15:18For pointing a gun at them.
15:19He definitely took some steps to kind of further escalate the situation.
15:22We don't want drivers confronting each other, especially if they are armed with handguns.
15:29It's much better to just call us, make a report of the situation.
15:33It's much safer for everybody.
15:35So we would much rather see people do that.
15:53I'm Trooper Parker with the Alaska State Troopers.
15:55The last hour of day shift is usually your busiest.
15:59People are getting off of work.
16:01People are waking up.
16:02That usually results into multiple interesting calls.
16:08They're going to copy a prowler in progress.
16:11Prowler in progress.
16:13The person is seeing an intruder at the cabin via camera.
16:19Prowler not on scene.
16:20There's somebody actually trespassing.
16:2310-4.
16:2434-42.
16:27Good.
16:28There's a broken window right here.
16:3110-4.
16:32What it sounds like, there's a broken window.
16:36And a high probability that someone's in there.
16:39It's Alaska.
16:41Everyone's armed.
16:42You just don't know.
16:42And we're going to stage on this house if we know someone's in there.
16:47We'll just give commands.
16:48And hopefully that individual chooses to exit.
16:56I'll bring my medic kit just in case.
17:09Hey, boy.
17:10Looks like he fried one of these hard windows open and heard movement on the inside.
17:15He's got a backpack and I'm pretty sure he's still inside.
17:24There's an intruder at the cabin.
17:26Looks like it's occurring now.
17:28Mailing a baseball cap.
17:30Looks like he fried one of these hard windows open and heard movement on the inside.
17:34High probability that someone's in there.
17:37This suspect has disabled all the cameras.
17:40We need to get someone on the other side of the house in case it's like jump, okay?
17:58It's better to talk to whoever we got out as opposed to just going, guns blazing.
18:11This is the Alaska State Troopers.
18:14You inside.
18:15Make yourself known.
18:18Yeah, calling 38 public.
18:19You're in contact with someone in place.
18:20Yeah, we're right.
18:23342, you can walk up.
18:36When you say you have a dog outside and you could be bit, that takes the fight out of a
18:41lot of people.
18:43For me, this is a win.
18:44No shots of fire.
18:46Got the individual in custody.
18:48What you got on both?
18:50This one's not as bad as this one.
18:53Superficial glass wounds here.
18:55I'm pretty sure he's going to make it okay.
18:59Everyone's going home.
19:00You can't ask for a better end result.
19:21Right now I'm alone because Trooper Weeks Trooper's still here out of an ATV crash.
19:26So there's only three people working graves at 2.41 a.m.
19:40I think this car's got their own plates.
19:42What do you think?
19:432003 black Ford?
19:47Air 2010.
19:481036.
19:49Okay.
19:50Those plates are on a maroon Chevy.
19:51They don't match.
19:53Never.
19:55The plates don't match the car.
19:57I think I know where the driver is.
19:59I'm pretty sure they're going to get a felon with me in a significant criminal history.
20:09What's it going, man?
20:12So here's the deal.
20:13The plates don't match the car.
20:14What?
20:15Yeah.
20:16What do they go back to?
20:17Like a black Ford.
20:18No way.
20:19Yeah, this ain't a black Ford.
20:21So is it your car?
20:22No, no, it's not.
20:24Can you just check and see if there's any registration in the car or insurance?
20:27Yeah, he doesn't have any.
20:29You want to just double check, man?
20:30I understand it's not your car, but...
20:31Uh, he doesn't have any.
20:32Can you check the glove box for me?
20:34He does not.
20:35Why are you unwilling to check?
20:37I need to know that this thing has registration.
20:39So can you...
20:39He doesn't have registration.
20:40Why are you looking at that glove box?
20:41Well, it makes me a little nervous that you're, like, refusing to at least check.
20:45You know what I mean?
20:46I don't need to check.
20:46I'm telling you.
20:47We've been through this before.
20:48I'm just going to check the van quick, okay?
20:50So just hang tight.
20:51Do you mind popping your door for me?
20:54Somebody shoot your car?
20:55What happened there?
20:56No, it was like that.
20:58Is there any weapons in the car?
20:59Uh, no, not there, no.
21:01I don't have any weapons on me.
21:03You can check me.
21:04I have a knife, a razor knife.
21:05Yeah, you're good.
21:05Believe that there.
21:06Here's the deal.
21:07I think there's a gun in there, based on how you're answering me and talking to me.
21:10I might be able to let you search.
21:12Listen, if there's a gun in the passenger compartment...
21:14I don't know if there's a gun in here or not.
21:15I got mine.
21:15Can I check and make sure there's not them, please?
21:17Because right now I'm concerned.
21:19I can't let you search your vehicle.
21:20I'm not asking to search the whole vehicle.
21:21I'm only asking to search that.
21:24I can call the owner.
21:25That's what I'm trying to get a hold of.
21:26If he wants to, then yeah.
21:27Okay, give him a call.
21:28Yeah.
21:29Hello?
21:30These cops pulled me over and they said that there's different plates on there.
21:34Ask him about the passenger compartment, please.
21:37They're asking to look in the glove box.
21:40I don't care.
21:41Okay.
21:43All right.
21:43Thank you, sir.
21:44Put your hands on the move.
21:50All right.
21:51You can sit back there.
21:52Sit back there.
21:56Okay.
21:59Okay, guys.
22:03All right.
22:03Listen to me, man.
22:04When I ask you if there's a gun and you look at this like five times, you said, not on
22:08me.
22:09Not on me.
22:10And so in my training, high chance there's a gun.
22:13I'm just saying that it's not my vehicle.
22:14So I'm going to have to take the plates.
22:16You're lucky I don't tow the car.
22:20I'm the only person available right now, so I don't have any backup, and I'm dealing with
22:24two guys that have very extensive criminal history up here.
22:27I'm going to cut your warning for the plate in the car.
22:29It's not your car.
22:30You got to go to work, man.
22:31Yeah, try to find a right.
22:32Don't drive this thing.
22:33You're getting impounded.
22:34Okay?
22:35All right.
22:40As soon as I ask about weapons, he just keeps saying, not on me, not on me, which is a
22:45red
22:45flag that there is one in the car.
22:48Most people, is there a gun in the car?
22:49It's all yes or no.
22:51He kept looking at his glove box over and over every single time I asked him.
22:54Sucks him by myself.
22:55Makes it much more dangerous.
22:57So that's why I was so adamant about trying to figure out if I could access that glove compartment.
23:00And based on just their actions, being alone, I didn't want to push it any further.
23:17Name is Trooper Cody Haley.
23:19Right now, we're currently patrolling the Mat-Su Valley here in Alaska.
23:22This is a lot different than law enforcement everywhere else in the country.
23:27The jurisdiction that I patrol here in the Mat-Su Valley is the size of West Virginia.
23:32Always worried about people having weapons on them.
23:35A lot of violent people hide back here.
23:37So you have to be more cautious about things.
23:4030, I have a possible theft in progress.
23:43Caller's calling people who stole gas from the property.
23:47Caller thinks they are slowing down and he has a gun on.
23:5130, I copy him.
23:531019 from Trojan Parks.
23:55Somebody just saw two people stealing gas from a construction site.
23:59The guy that called said he's got a gun.
24:01I guess he wants to confront them.
24:02It's not something we want him to do.
24:04You don't know what these people are capable of that you are confronting.
24:07You could get killed over this and it's not worth it.
24:11Suspect vehicle is possibly a Chevy dumping fuel all over the road.
24:1630, I copy.
24:17I can smell the fuel they're throwing out.
24:20They're dumping the gas all over the road.
24:22All you need to see advice, we have two people chasing this.
24:25And then just reruns one of our callers.
24:28They're using deadly force.
24:29I'm going to get there and end this before somebody gets hurt.
24:32Five of the vehicles and oncoming traffic.
24:34So I might have to pit before you get here.
24:39Foot bail, foot bail, foot bail.
24:42Foot bail, 1050.
24:45Hey, hey, what do you want to do inside?
24:46Put your hands like you see them now!
24:56Put your hands on the steering wheel.
24:57They're using deadly force.
24:58Foot bail, foot bail.
25:00Hey, stay tuned for you inside.
25:01Put your hands like you see them now!
25:05Put your hands on the steering wheel.
25:07Do it now!
25:09Can you do me a favor?
25:11I appreciate your help.
25:12Could you put your gun away and go over there, please?
25:20You inside the vehicle!
25:22Put your hands over your head now!
25:24Do it now!
25:27Tell 1B29 to pass me to block oncoming traffic
25:29so no innocents get shot.
25:32You in the woods, speak to me now!
25:33He may be injured!
25:35I hear you in the wood line!
25:37Put your hands above your head!
25:39So one of the trees on that side just moved.
25:41So there's somebody not too far in there.
25:43There's something in the vehicle.
25:45There's a dog in there.
25:46Dog?
25:46Yeah.
25:48Hey, you got something that could break that back window?
25:51We just have to approach the second.
25:54You guys got a less lethal shotgun or anything?
25:57I've got a 40.
25:58That would work.
26:00Since we can't see in the vehicle,
26:01we have less lethal options like a sandbag shotgun.
26:04Something like that hurts if it hits you,
26:05but it's not going to severely injure you.
26:08Shotgun!
26:17I saw Jocelyn clear with the drone now.
26:22I don't see the dog.
26:24Dog jumped out.
26:24I jumped out.
26:25One of them's, I saw a white arm when I pulled out.
26:30Let's clear this gear.
26:31All right.
26:39Front seat's clear that I can see.
26:42Check under that.
26:44Pack up front.
26:45I got it.
26:48There's a knife down here.
26:53I don't see anything in the wood line behind us.
26:56So, right now, we cleared the vehicle.
26:59They stole a couple thousand dollars with the gas.
27:02They also apparently, I guess earlier this morning,
27:04stole a couple thousand dollars with the stuff from another property.
27:07It looks like they were ramming people.
27:09They should have found an assault, too.
27:11But we got some good videos and pictures of the incident that happened.
27:14We have ways to send things to criminal intelligence and find out who the people are.
27:18It's very likely that we'll identify them on the pictures, and we'll just get them next time.
27:45Fairbanks, 153108.
27:47I'm Trooper Jenny Ronstead.
27:49I've been a trooper for about six years now.
27:51Today, I'm headed out to one of our larger villages with Trooper Kimura.
27:56Got a report last night that there was a gentleman shooting at some people at the ballpark.
28:02So, we're headed out first thing this morning to go and investigate.
28:08We have the TPO out there, which is the tribal police officer,
28:11and he was the one that actually reported to us this possible shooting.
28:18The report I got, he was shooting at two of the individuals here in the village.
28:23Incredibly intoxicated last night.
28:24When I went to pick up the brass in front of his house, I could hear him still drunk, screaming
28:28inside.
28:29Why did you pick up the brass in front of his house?
28:32I know from experience around here, if I don't get evidence from the crime scene,
28:37pretty much immediately it's going to be gone.
28:40I've been told that someone had taken the gun away from him.
28:43I'm not entirely confident that's true.
28:46Got some in this house?
28:47I believe so.
28:49State troopers!
28:49State troopers!
28:58Okay, he said there was somebody that saw.
29:00Right there.
29:02So, what happened?
29:04Uh, just an altercation turned into shooting a gun, and she was pretty scared.
29:10So, who was shooting the gun?
29:12Was he shooting at somebody or shooting in the air?
29:14Was he...
29:15I saw him shooting towards two people that way.
29:17Who was fighting?
29:19Um, I think it was...
29:23All right.
29:24That's pretty much it.
29:28Are you by chance?
29:30Yeah.
29:30Oh, sweet.
29:32What happened last night?
29:34Not much.
29:36All I can remember is I was trying to be, like, helping, you know, so they wouldn't stop fighting and
29:42stuff.
29:42Okay.
29:43Just got it out of hand.
29:44All right.
29:44Who were you trying to stop from fighting?
29:46My cousin.
29:47Who's your cousin?
29:48Oh, I'm...
29:50So you're trying to stop from fighting with who?
29:53Um, her boyfriend.
29:56All right.
29:57Was there a firearm involved?
29:59I have no idea.
30:01You have no idea?
30:02Yeah.
30:03No.
30:03No recollection.
30:05Mm-hmm.
30:06Mm-hmm.
30:06Okay.
30:09All right.
30:10Thanks for talking with us.
30:11Yep.
30:11All right.
30:12You guys have a good day.
30:16There's a culture here in the village when it comes to pretty much telling on people.
30:22Even if you have a lot of evidence that a crime happened, people will not tell you about it because
30:28they don't want to be framed as the person who's going to rat other people out.
30:31We have village police officers like Mario today.
30:35Uh, he lives here.
30:37He's in the communities, deeply ingrained in the community, and he handles the vast majority of what actually happens here
30:44in the village.
30:44And so we rely on them to do the job and give people in Alaska the services that they deserve.
30:51Then left his house last night on a motorcycle.
30:55I followed him around for a little bit.
30:57He came somewhere over here.
30:59I think he probably went residence.
31:02See if they're there.
31:03Just on the right here.
31:07Hello?
31:08We did finally locate the suspect and his girlfriend, who was our reported second victim.
31:14Well, about what happened, man?
31:17Okay.
31:21Okay, that's all good.
31:23Thanks.
31:25We went and talked with the suspect, and he was claiming self-defense.
31:30The girlfriend at first didn't really want to talk to us, but I finally got her to talk to us.
31:35We were walking to a home.
31:38Drunk something?
31:39Or I don't know, but he just started farting.
31:46So he's banging on the door, and he won't have the gun to talk to us.
31:48So he's banging on the door, and he won't have the gun to talk to us.
31:50And you're telling him, stop.
31:54So they were fighting in front of the house, and pulled out the gun and started shooting?
32:01No.
32:02That's crap.
32:02Right.
32:03Okay.
32:03And everything that was happening to him, was self-defense.
32:08The issue we have is he's safe in the house.
32:10Yes, he's pounding on the door, and then he comes out and starts shooting.
32:20We got a report that there was a gentleman shooting at some people at the ballpark.
32:24I saw him shooting towards two people in that way.
32:28Who was fighting?
32:29Um, I think it was ****.
32:32We went and talked with the suspect.
32:33About what happened, man?
32:35Uh, it was self-defense.
32:36Okay.
32:37Yeah.
32:37Everything that was happening, that ****, was self-defense.
32:40The girlfriend claimed self-defense, um, but her story didn't really match where we found
32:46the empty shells.
32:47And the fact she was super hesitant to talk to us, plus her story not matching the evidence,
32:51makes us think that the third party that had nothing to do with the fight was probably
32:56the one telling the truth.
32:58Go ahead and **** and take one of the ****.
33:00All right.
33:02Let's go.
33:03I'm going to Fairbanks.
33:06You're bringing me to jail.
33:09It didn't turn physical at all.
33:11We didn't have to use any sort of force.
33:12**** you.
33:13I'm **** defending myself and you guys are going to **** act like that.
33:16But there was definitely a verbal resistance.
33:22**** you.
33:25**** you.
33:30You know, I did what I did just because I was **** trying to protect myself.
33:32Yeah, I, you know.
33:34I mean, ****.
33:35How would you feel if you got **** that just happened?
33:37I was going.
33:39Well, you went in your house, you got the gun, you came back outside, you confirmed him,
33:43and you fired the warning shots.
33:45Yes.
33:45So there was no, no reason to reconfront somebody when you're in your house.
33:53You're coming to arrest me when I was defending myself.
33:57All right.
33:58You got your six-hack and everything?
34:00Okay.
34:00You got your six-hack?
34:02Okay.
34:03Last time I got sick on a plane was when I was seven.
34:05Oh, really?
34:07Oh, really?
34:07The interesting part of our job is like one day you could be arresting somebody, but then
34:11the next day that person could be helping you out.
34:13So, upholding the reputation of the Alaska State Troopers is a huge responsibility.
34:39I'm Trooper Lewis, working out of the Matsu Valley.
34:42My dad, who just retired this year, was a trooper as well.
34:47It was nice having him as a trooper growing up because I could hear his stories, and then
34:52that kind of like motivated me to seek law enforcement.
34:58Trying to do a felony warrant service on someone who's got a warrant for assault two, three,
35:03and four, failure to comply, as well as escape three.
35:07So, where the guy is supposed to be located is on a offbeat trail out at Zero Lake.
35:13Someone called in about some squatters.
35:15So, Trooper Wright with Wildlife went to go out there and check to see if anyone was out there.
35:21He spotted a guy on a four-wheeler.
35:23The mail took off, and the guy who was later identified as the subject with the felony warrant.
35:29Right now, we're going to meet up with the other troopers.
35:33We got myself, another blue-shirt trooper, and then three wildlife troopers bringing their
35:38four-wheelers in.
35:42This one's sketchy.
35:44We're in a tight line with each other going up to that, but Zero Lake, we're going to hit
35:49this trail off to the side here.
35:51You're not going to be able to get your vehicle up in here the ways it's going to be pinned
35:54in.
35:55His actual trailer lives kind of back in the bushes back here.
35:59If he tries to run on the wheel, or odds are he's not making it out.
36:03No, he'll go so far, ditch it, then...
36:05Yeah, he'll run.
36:07It's thick back there.
36:08It's thick.
36:11With someone like him, we've dealt with him in the past.
36:14He has history.
36:15The more people we have, if he does run, we have more people to set up a perimeter around
36:20the area that he's at and more eyes on.
36:22It's mainly what I think about is, you know, officer safety.
36:26How many trails are leading out of the area that he's at, possible dangers of everything
36:30else out there, you know, moose and bears and whatnot.
36:33Always have your head on a swivel.
36:35He can be armed, so always assume that everyone in Alaska is armed, especially out here.
37:21We've dealt with him in the past.
37:22He has history.
37:23Come out with your hands visible.
37:25He can be armed, so always have your head on a swivel.
37:31Trooper's open to the door.
37:35It seems like he's not in his RV.
37:39Right now, they're securing some firearms that they've found.
37:42We found a rifle inside in plain view and a pistol shotgun.
37:48The individual we're looking for is a convicted felon, and he can't own concealable firearms.
37:55It feels good to take firearms from someone that's not supposed to have them.
37:59I'm assuming, since he saw the trooper come out here the other day, that we'd probably be
38:03back out here soon.
38:04So he's probably hanging out in another place for a little bit.
38:07The wildlife guys will come out here more often, so hopefully be able to catch him that
38:11way.
38:30It's a Saturday in the valley, middle of summertime still.
38:33We've got everybody traveling to try and squeeze in these last trips before people have to
38:37start buttoning up for the wintertime.
38:39So it's definitely busy.
38:41We're seeing a lot more people on the roads, generally running around, enjoying the weather
38:45we're having right now.
38:481B34 and males walking close to the highway.
38:5210-4.
38:53Walk 10-9-2.
38:55Sounds like adult son and dad were getting into some sort of physical fight in the driveway.
39:01I'm not too sure what was going on there, but it sounds like the son left and then started
39:06walking down the highway.
39:08This guy, he's emotionally charged.
39:10You know, he just got into a fight with dad.
39:12He knows he's probably in trouble.
39:13We have probable cause to arrest him for domestic violence, criminal mischief.
39:18So we're going to try and find him walking down the highway.
39:2848, I believe we're out with him on the bridge.
39:31It's concerning for us.
39:32Is he going to try and run?
39:33You know, we have traffic.
39:34Is he going to try and run into traffic?
39:35Or is he even going to try and jump off the bridge?
39:38Hey, Cole.
39:40Cole.
39:42Cole, stay trooper.
39:43Stop walking.
39:45Are you talking to me?
39:46Yeah.
39:47Are you laughing wrong?
39:47I'm back, man.
39:48No, I don't.
39:48Stop moving.
39:50Cole, stop moving.
39:51You're under arrest.
39:52Oh, what?
39:53I was the one assaulted.
39:54Okay, turn around.
39:55Put your hands behind your back.
39:56No, no, no, no, no, sir.
39:57Put your hands behind your back.
39:58My lawyer's on the phone.
39:59Okay, that's fine.
39:59Okay, hold on.
40:00Turn around.
40:00Put your hands behind your back.
40:01I have done nothing.
40:01I have.
40:02I literally.
40:02Sir, I'm not resisting.
40:04I have done nothing wrong.
40:05Separate your feet.
40:06There you go.
40:07Hold on.
40:07She literally.
40:08There's literally a stab in my arm that she stabbed me from, man.
40:10Hold still.
40:11I was assaulted.
40:13She stabbed me.
40:14Genuinely.
40:15There's a hole in my arm where my own mother tried to stab me over a thing of food.
40:20I took a can of spam.
40:22Spam.
40:22She grabbed me.
40:23Turn around and lean up against this bumper here.
40:26Turn around and lean up against this bumper here.
40:28So I can talk to you, man.
40:30Okay.
40:30Are you willing to talk to me and answer questions?
40:32Yes, sir.
40:33Okay.
40:33What happened?
40:34I just got out of the shower and my mother said, if you are hungry, take some stuff from
40:39my pantry.
40:40Okay.
40:40When I had grabbed a thing of spam, she would start yelling at me and she'd put her hands
40:45on my arm.
40:46See, their initial scratches.
40:48And she's a 450-pound woman.
40:51I just see little dots.
40:52Yeah.
40:52Well, that's from when she originally had grabbed me, that bleeding one that just stopped recently.
40:57This down here?
40:58That's the one I got stabbed on the counter with.
41:00What stabbed you?
41:01Some that was sticking off the counter.
41:03But it wasn't her with like an ice pick like coming at you.
41:05Yeah.
41:05Okay.
41:06And I'm not a violent person.
41:08I don't hurt people.
41:09Well, I'm such a big dude, brakes on accident.
41:13I don't need to.
41:14Okay.
41:15I love my mom, man.
41:17Okay.
41:18Did your dad, you and your dad ever get into it in the driveway or anything?
41:21No, he just was wondering what the hell happened.
41:24So the most he did, he stopped me because I was hysterical and freaking the out.
41:29Okay.
41:29He didn't hurt me at all.
41:31He just was like, hey, what's going on?
41:33Okay.
41:34So we go stand over there with them.
41:35So you're a little more away from the...
41:37Let me get you up for this area.
41:38So the charges right now are criminal mischief in the fourth degree.
41:43The DV, it's an A4 fear assault, so an assault in the fourth.
41:47The DV if she's the one who hit me.
41:49So it's DV because you guys are related.
41:52Are you serious?
41:53Is she being charged too?
41:55All I know about is what I'm doing with you.
41:57Okay.
41:58Like I said, I've only dealt with you, right?
42:00I didn't go up there.
42:01I haven't talked to you.
42:02Penny right there.
42:04Sorry.
42:04There you go.
42:05ADHD, sorry.
42:06You're good, man.
42:08Until the courts say otherwise, you cannot contact her directly or indirectly.
42:12No, I just have to tell you that because I don't want you getting in trouble for if you call
42:15her or something not knowing that, okay?
42:25Let me get you out of the way because I don't want us to get hit out here, all right?
42:28Yeah.
42:29So we'll just go to the right here.
42:31Probably the best outcome we could have asked for.
42:33This is one of those unique ones where we're not in a house, we're not, you know, on some back
42:38road.
42:38We're on literally the busiest artery highway going to and from the valley down to Anchorage.
42:44Could have done anything to hurt himself or one of us.
