00:22One mistake out here could be the difference between life or death.
00:25You have no idea what you're going to encounter.
00:30People come up here, and when they're on the run, it's through there, and we'll find them.
00:34The allure to Alaska is just how wild it can be.
00:41Stop, or you're going to get tasers!
00:43Stop!
00:48You don't have a boring day as a state trooper in Alaska.
00:53State troopers!
00:54Do not move!
00:55Let me see your hand!
00:55Let's go!
01:10Thank you for your service!
01:12Woo!
01:12Go get them!
01:15I'm Trooper Turnus.
01:16I've been a trooper for a little over a year now, and I've been in law enforcement for about
01:20five years.
01:20High five!
01:21Oh, sorry!
01:24Today is summer solstice.
01:26Longest day of the year.
01:27Sunset's around 12, 1230, and then sunrise is about 3.
01:31There's a lot going on in town.
01:33A lot of events, a lot of parties.
01:35Everybody's been cooped up all winter, so once the days start getting longer and it starts
01:38warming up, it seems like people kind of lose their mind.
01:47It's kind of weird because, as you can see, it's almost 1 a.m. and you can see everything,
01:53so it definitely helps me locate and identify the type of driving behavior people exhibit
01:58when they might be involved in criminal activity.
02:08I looked at his car and it just took off on me for no reason.
02:19I got a guy trying to flee from me.
02:26We're at the Oasis.
02:27Purple pickup.
02:30Purple pickup.
02:40It's unoccupied.
02:41He must have fled on foot.
02:42We're behind the Oasis.
02:44Fairbank 2010, can I get a read back on ?
02:46Check cat history and arms history and see who's associated with it.
02:56The registered owner sounds like he's on probation for fleeing from police and felony theft.
03:01Hey, turn into this guy that just ran off this white, white shirt, black hat.
03:08Can you see, is he close or no?
03:14Yeah, this is a black shirt, white t-shirt.
03:29Let me see your hands.
03:31Let me see your hands.
03:32I got him here.
03:32I got him here.
03:33Hands up.
03:34Hands up.
03:36Hands up.
03:39Get on the ground.
03:40Get on the ground.
03:43Hands down.
03:45Hands down.
03:46Ow!
03:47We got him.
03:48Can I keep doing this?
03:50Fine.
03:52Oh.
03:52All right.
03:53Sit up.
03:54Bring your knees up.
03:55Yes.
03:56Ready?
03:57Yeah.
04:00All right.
04:00Stop.
04:01Stop.
04:03Over here.
04:04Go.
04:05You want to just check the grass and see if you ditch anything around here?
04:08Sure.
04:13You want to just bring over my car?
04:15I'll Mirandize him.
04:19All right.
04:21You all right, man?
04:22Do you need to talk to an ambulance or anything like that?
04:24Who's the door?
04:25Hey, you.
04:26Okay.
04:26Are you willing to talk to me at all?
04:28Yeah.
04:29Huh?
04:29Bye.
04:31Who's the door, bro?
04:32You don't want to talk?
04:33Who's the door?
04:33All right.
04:34Bye.
04:36He doesn't want to talk.
04:40He reeks like alcohol, so good chance he's DUI.
04:52He's got a bunch of dime bags.
04:54Yeah, it looks like there might be some white residue on that.
04:57So this is just a field test.
04:59I'm just going to dab the white tip on what I suspect is narcotics, and then it'll turn
05:03blue.
05:04So field tested positive for cocaine.
05:07So he's got multiple phones.
05:08He's got a digital scale.
05:09Tons of baggies.
05:11A little bit of coke residue, and probably get this thing impounded and get the show on
05:14the road.
05:17You're pretty fast, Testa.
05:19Yeah.
05:31Summer solstice.
05:32I can sometimes cause problems.
05:34Decent chance we'll have people drinking quite a bit.
05:37Parties, DUIs.
05:39Might have some fights.
05:40Just never know.
05:43First of all, 10.
05:441036.
05:46So we just got dispatched to a disturbance slash domestic violence situation.
05:50What's being reported is a son hit his mother, I believe, with a pillow.
05:55He is 37.
06:00I thought it was like a kid hit his mom with a pillow.
06:02So now that I'm seeing that the guy is like 37, that's a little concerning.
06:06Not sure if he's going to be highly intoxicated, maybe mentally unstable.
06:10Might be more serious.
06:11Who knows?
06:28It's all my fault because I threw a pillow at you.
06:32That's pathetic.
06:33Come talk to me, Matt.
06:34The state troopers.
06:37Mind stepping out and chatting with us?
06:38Oh, hand a camera.
06:40Step down here.
06:41Step down.
06:41Oh, no, no, no worries.
06:42Step down.
06:42I'm stepping down.
06:43I'm sitting down.
06:45No weapons ahead.
06:46Over here.
06:46Come on.
06:47Oh, forceful.
06:48You're all right.
06:49We're not trying to hurt you.
06:50Over here.
06:50Oh, no, no, no.
06:51I'm going to squat over here.
06:53All right.
06:53If you want to take a seat over here, that's fine.
06:55Oh, chihuahuas.
06:57You want to just lean up on the car for me and chow then?
06:58No, no, no, no.
06:59I'm not leaning on the car.
07:00I'm leaning against the yard.
07:02What's going on?
07:03Why are we here?
07:03What happened?
07:04I threw a pillow at my mom.
07:05What happened?
07:06What led up to that?
07:07Because she called me useless and I go like, stop.
07:12And I threw the pillow at her.
07:13So I'm the bad guy and all this.
07:17Mm-hmm.
07:18Okay.
07:19And then she called you guys and I'm going like, of course, you're going to hold that
07:24against me because I threw a pillow at you.
07:26I got you.
07:28I don't want to make this bad.
07:30It's summer solstice.
07:32You guys don't want to be out here doing this .
07:35I got to take care of chihuahuas and my mom with dementia.
07:40So this is the deal.
07:41You need to stop throwing pillows at your mom.
07:43I don't care how much of an argument you're getting in.
07:46Good note.
07:46If she would have been injured, you're going to jail today.
07:48Okay?
07:49By a pillow.
07:49By a pillow.
07:50If she's injured by it, you're going to jail.
07:52It's called DV assault.
07:54Okay?
07:54Able to stay away from your mom?
07:56Keep things peaceful?
07:57I'm going to bed.
07:58All right.
07:58Let's go back in the house and let's go to bed.
08:00Don't help me out.
08:01I got myself.
08:02No.
08:03You're fine.
08:04Oh, yeah.
08:05All right.
08:06Head back in.
08:07Take care of yourself.
08:09Happy solstice.
08:11Happy solstice.
08:12They're doing a magnificent job.
08:14They're checking up and I appreciate them.
08:32I'm going to get them around.
08:34How do you work?
08:35I'm SC.
08:36Chris Havens.
08:36I'm working day shift in the valley.
08:39As the sergeant, my responsibilities are to kind of herd the cats, per se.
08:45Let's try to devote the appropriate resources to where they need to go.
08:49We're responding to a subject that has a warrant for assault on his mother.
08:54The mother saw him inside the house and called the police.
08:58Palmer PD surrounded the house to try to call him out.
09:01Our plan as of right now is to potentially affect entry.
09:05This is our second barricade of the day.
09:07We're hoping that he does eventually decide to come out.
09:15This is the Palmer Police Department.
09:17I need you to exit the residence peacefully now.
09:23Our suspect's criminal history includes assault second degree, DUI assault fours.
09:29He does have a previous resisting arrestor barricading out of Anchorage.
09:33He's definitely been involved in this process before.
09:36Please just come outside with your hands in the air and surrender.
09:40If you do not reply, you may be bit by a dog or otherwise injured.
09:44I don't want to see that happen to you.
09:46There are more of us coming.
09:49One has been approved and they are on their way.
09:52I've seen him walk past the doors and windows several times, so he knows we're outside.
09:56He's got a position of advantage.
09:58He's got access to potential weapons.
10:00So it's just all around a bad situation.
10:02And certainly we could make it worse by trying to go in hastily.
10:25We're responding to a assault warrant subject that has barricaded inside of his mother's residence.
10:32He's got access to potential weapons.
10:34The mother left the residence and he has refused to come out to us.
10:40So right now our snipers are getting set in location.
10:43If our suspect does not imply SWAT, we'll breach the front door.
10:48Bearcat arrived on scene, which is our armored vehicle.
10:51We're going to get a couple of members inside.
10:52Friend, we're going to start working on door breach.
10:55This is Alaska State Troopers.
10:57You are on their left.
10:58Come out the front door now.
11:00We're not being in our hands.
11:03Come to the front door, Doc.
11:06We don't want to wake your mom's house.
11:07Come out.
11:16We don't want you to get hurt.
11:18He went left to the bedrooms.
11:20I think we should deploy that NFDD, see if we can get a response back.
11:25Come to the front door, Doc.
11:26I don't want to damage your mom's house anymore.
11:29We are ready.
11:31All right, moving.
11:32Okay, on me, on me.
11:34Don't move.
11:35Let me see both hands.
11:37Both hands.
11:38Stop!
11:39Don't move.
11:40Don't move.
11:41Don't move.
11:42Okay, let's get him out of here.
11:44He was able to close the door on us.
11:46We continue with the door breach, force the door back open.
11:49Luckily, we were able to get close enough to Tazem,
11:52make entry into the house, effecting an arrest.
11:54You all right if we get those barbs on you?
11:55I don't consent, sir, to see you.
11:57I'm not searching anything.
11:57I'm just trying to help you out.
11:59That's all.
11:59So it ended pretty good in this situation.
12:03We are going to take photos of the front door
12:06if you want to communicate with mom.
12:07And she is cleared to return to the residence
12:09whenever she pleases.
12:29All right, just do me a favor and keep those speeds down low for me, okay?
12:32We've gotten reports of some roost on the side of the road up a way a second.
12:35All right, so enjoy the rest of your trip.
12:37My name is Sergeant Brian Haley.
12:39I've been with the troopers for going on 15 years now.
12:46Solstice in Alaska.
12:55We got a report almost a week ago now of a really bad assault that took place.
13:00The suspect got a pickaxe handle and struck a female victim in the head.
13:06Also, while she was trying to get away, he actually got a hold of a mallet
13:10and hit her across the head again.
13:13Ended up breaking her arms, breaking her legs.
13:15She was unconscious for about three days.
13:18Almost been a week now, and she's still in the ICU, just barely able to talk.
13:24We know who the suspect is, but we're still not sure of his location.
13:28We've since gotten some information from her of where this assault might have taken place.
13:33So we're going to head up there with a couple other troopers and do some recon.
13:36We're just looking for anything to corroborate her story.
13:41And these are the exact description of the clothes that she gave.
13:45While she was running away, screaming, the suspect was chasing her down and tore it off of her.
13:50So it was a pretty violent assault.
13:54Looks like there's possibly drips of blood right here on the rock.
13:58She said that he drove up with the pickup truck, put her in the truck.
14:01She thought she was going to be driven around until she died.
14:04I think that's all we're going to get out here.
14:05I want to get out of this boat.
14:06Yeah, this is a hell of a case, guys.
14:09It was a shot in the dark, but we ended up determining that it was a location.
14:13This is way too much just to be a big coincidence.
14:27I'm Trooper Scott McAfee.
14:30I've been with the Alaska State Troopers for 10 years.
14:33Currently, I'm assigned as a canine handler with the Criminal Suppression Unit here in Fairbanks, Alaska.
14:38I'm going to meet up with Trooper Jess Evans.
14:41Like, that's it.
14:42We're going to go try to apprehend for the horrific assault he committed against his girlfriend.
14:50There's an area in North Pole where he has been known to hang out, and we're getting word from people
14:56on the street that he's been seen recently.
14:59So we are going to these couple hot spots and install some trail cameras that will send photographs in real
15:05time to us of any movement.
15:07I've been dealing with this guy since I started.
15:10I have personal history with him running and fighting.
15:13Really?
15:13Yeah, so we need to put our effort into trying to find him and getting him off the street.
15:19So this is the place right here.
15:25Shantytown.
15:28Which house is it?
15:29So allegedly, he's living here in that garage.
15:34There's a bunch of broke-down, abandoned places he could be hiding in out there.
15:39We'll go contact the neighbor and see if we can put a camera there.
15:47Hey, sir.
15:47How you doing?
15:48Good.
15:48Hey.
15:49You come out.
15:49They get kind of loud.
15:50Oh, okay.
15:51Hey, Trooper McAfee with State Troopers.
15:52How are you doing?
15:53Hey, where are you?
15:53Just recovering from your shoulders, sir.
15:55Oh, dang.
15:55We're looking for a guy who's got a warrant.
15:57His mom lives across the street.
15:59Do you mind if we put a camera on your property facing that way?
16:02All right, cool.
16:03Anything to get that guy.
16:04Okay, sounds good.
16:05I'm going to help you all out.
16:07That's why I figured most people want these guys.
16:10He's going to broke my shoulder.
16:10Oh, really?
16:11Yeah.
16:11How did he do that?
16:13Well, I confronted him over on his property because he was screaming like a child.
16:19Yeah.
16:20And I woke up on the ground, broken shoulder.
16:22Oh, dang.
16:22Intuitions in the back.
16:24But you don't mind us setting up some gear then?
16:25I don't mind that at all.
16:26I appreciate you.
16:28The public's very supportive of what we do here, which makes it a great place to work.
16:33Arming in 10 seconds.
16:35There we go.
16:36Camera one installed.
16:38Well, thanks for your help letting us set that up.
16:40And we'll probably leave it there for a couple days.
16:42Anything you guys need, a ham sandwich or whatever you need, I'm here.
16:45Appreciate you.
16:46Yeah.
16:46No, seriously.
16:47Thank you, guys.
16:48Nice to talk to you.
16:49We'll see you again.
16:50All right.
16:50Take care.
16:51The community here in Fairbanks, they support the state troopers.
16:54They're happy to help, and we love working hand-in-hand with them.
17:02Oh, what do we got here?
17:05Cops out with somebody.
17:09Let's see.
17:12Is this ?
17:14That's him.
17:15That's him.
17:15That's no suspect.
17:18Well, we got him.
17:20That's as rough as I've ever seen him look.
17:22Carrying around a gallon of chocolate milk to live off, I guess.
17:26You were looking for him.
17:27Yeah, I knew we were looking for him.
17:28I'm going to walk you back to the patrol car.
17:30All right.
17:31That was easy, yeah.
17:32Just so you're aware, you have a $100,000 warrant for your arrest, okay?
17:37Worked out good.
17:38A little anticlimactic for us, but the bad guy's off the street.
17:40You know, the mission's successful.
17:42So that's what we're here for.
17:43Hey, job well done, right?
17:45Yeah.
17:59My name's Trooper Cody Haley, working out of the Wasilla slash Palmer post here in Alaska.
18:05Our patrol area is the size of West Virginia.
18:08You need to be able to handle yourself more than in most areas of law enforcement.
18:12One mistake out here could be the difference between life or death.
18:16Backup for a different chocolate milk, something.
18:18Felony level amount of stuff.
18:21We have two people chasing.
18:24Let's go ahead and request AST assistance to spike.
18:2730s to 1910 on WPD.
18:32We requested AST's assistance to apply some spikes.
18:36So we're heading towards Anchorage right now with the pursuit.
18:38We're crossing the bridge southbound.
18:40These are going to 100 passing higher.
18:47WPD and AST are both currently in pursuit of the vehicle.
18:50We'll catch up.
18:52I'd rather be number three as I can.
18:54Then TORL take number one.
18:5514 if you have to take number two.
18:57Our job, once we get there on scene, is to probably be the third and fourth car in the vehicle
19:02pursuit.
19:03Somebody else will pit it.
19:04We're going to try to lock in the vehicle, make sure we can't move.
19:08And hopefully safely resolve this without any injury.
19:19Looks like they're throwing all the evidence outside of the vehicle, trying to destroy any evidence.
19:31We're heading towards APD, and generally they'll help us with spikes, too.
19:35APD is about to make one heart of this.
19:38Second, let's go back off and turn it down.
19:42Vehicle is continuing to throw stuff out after we have to continue.
19:47We don't have the ability to terminate the pursuit in any way.
19:50Since no one's ahead with spikes to stop the vehicle, we have to stop the pursuit.
19:54But he's showing behavior right now that shows that it could be under the influence of something,
19:58but continuously driving recklessly, even without any law enforcement contact.
20:02So I'm rolling at a distance.
20:04Oh, he's getting off right here.
20:08I got it.
20:09It's right in front of me.
20:11And it's heading towards the base right now.
20:13There's nowhere for it to go.
20:16Advise the base police that the truck trying to enter the base is our pursuit vehicle.
20:21There's no escaping.
20:23It's done for.
20:28Oh, God.
20:33That pursuit truck just U-turned and almost hit me head off,
20:36which is a felony assault from a law enforcement officer.
20:40Yeah.
20:42The car will be re-engaged because it's a felony assault.
21:13We're about to pit it right as he discontinued it.
21:16Copied.
21:17We did discontinue.
21:18It's back northbound on A Street.
21:21The pursuit became very dangerous for the public.
21:23We asked for assistance from Anchorage Police Department so we could spike it and end it.
21:28Unfortunately, we weren't able to help.
21:29It's very frustrating.
21:31I mean, personally, if somebody almost hits you, you want them to go to jail.
21:33But still, at the end of the day, my personal frustrations is not more important than public safety.
21:40That's what matters the most.
21:57I'm in a car.
22:02I'm in a car.
22:10I'm in a car.
22:13I'm in a car.
22:16I was like, man, that's a rough-looking dog.
22:19My wife's like, that's a wolf.
22:21We've had calls and issues with kids getting stomped
22:24by moose at the bus stop, so beautiful stuff in Alaska,
22:29but, you know, with the beauty comes the danger.
22:3134, our caller thinks she found a human hand on the ground.
22:36It has five digits, but no claws.
22:3910-4, 10-9-2.
22:42Not the first time we've gotten those calls,
22:45so a little suspicious.
22:471B-34?
22:49Yep.
22:54Hello?
23:00Hello.
23:01Hey, State Troopers.
23:02So down the street, is it...
23:03Can we walk?
23:05Sure.
23:07That's it right there.
23:09Is it that black thing?
23:10Yeah.
23:11We noticed it because there were flies swarming around.
23:13God forbid if it is a person.
23:16I want to get photographs before you touch anything.
23:19Not very often you find something like that.
23:21I don't shy away from blood and all that stuff.
23:24I've been a medic for many, many years, so for me, it's no big deal.
23:28Looks like the foot.
23:29I mean, you had the heel right there in the metatarsals.
23:32Let me put this in the bag because I'm not putting this in my car like that, so...
23:37Obviously, it's a foot.
23:38It's a bone.
23:39But it is animal.
23:40Little black bear bear cup.
23:42Cool.
23:43Didn't have any claws on it, but same size as my foot.
23:46It is something because we get these calls a lot, you know?
23:49It's like, oh, there's a human remains.
23:50But, nah, yeah, no, it's a bear.
23:52If nothing else, we got something that is going to upset other folks out of the roadway.
23:56It may not be glamorous, but it's fun.
23:58I'm having a great time.
24:14My name's James Camira.
24:16I've been a trooper for almost 22 years.
24:19I started my career in the Matsu Valley working patrol duties.
24:23Big bag and we'll ride with me.
24:25Sounds good.
24:26And then took a position in the rural services unit in Fairbanks.
24:37Today, we're doing some follow-up on an arson investigation that we received a few days ago.
24:43Our kind of marching orders are to spend our time in the villages and the communities
24:48because there's so few troopers and village police officers.
24:51We try to make a presence the best we can.
24:53Sometimes we drive.
24:55We use snow machines and four-wheelers sometimes.
24:58And a lot of times we use small airplanes.
25:01However we have to get out there, we get out there.
25:07This house right here.
25:09It's in the back.
25:13Underneath the boxes were all lit on fire and it was starting to climb that wall and you
25:17could tell something had been dumped on it.
25:19Well, you can still smell the accelerant.
25:21There's gasoline here, so...
25:22Right.
25:23So you came over here and a bunch of community members put it out?
25:26Yeah, they put it out pretty quick.
25:27All right.
25:28Yeah.
25:29Well, it's a good thing that nobody got hurt.
25:31That's the main thing.
25:32Yeah, we're still investigating it and we're going to try to contact the suspect while we're
25:38here.
25:38Right.
25:39So...
25:39I don't know what his story is.
25:40All I know is that he's been messaging me and threatening me.
25:43Okay.
25:44Well, let's get out there, get some pictures and some CSI work out in the village, huh?
25:52The victim found what he thought was the container that was used for the arson.
25:57So, we're looking into this right now.
25:59Do you smell anything?
26:01No.
26:01It's been here for a minute, but it's maybe recently broken.
26:04Yeah.
26:06Because it's still got sharp edges.
26:09We take these things super serious.
26:11It's a felony, level crime, and there were kids inside the house when this was all happening.
26:16So, it's at the highest level of importance.
26:21All right, man.
26:22Thanks for coming.
26:22You bet.
26:23All right.
26:24We'll get to work.
26:24Thanks.
26:27All right.
26:28The suspect is from the village here.
26:31We've dealt with him both as a victim and suspect in several things.
26:35Oh, so it's right here?
26:36Yeah.
26:37Okay.
26:37Cool.
26:45Hey, what's up?
26:46Where were you when the fire transpired there?
26:48Is that fire?
26:49The fire, yeah.
26:50Yeah.
26:51So, what do you know about that?
26:52I know that is saying that was me that made that fire.
26:56Oh.
26:56I wouldn't do nothing like that.
26:57Okay.
26:58So, there'd be no reason why we'd find any evidence blinking you or nobody would see you,
27:04like, running through the woods or anything like that?
27:06No, that's scary.
27:07Okay.
27:07When was the last time you've ever been over there to his house?
27:10We went 27th.
27:11That was the last time I would go over there.
27:13Okay.
27:13So, you're pretty specific about that day.
27:15Yeah.
27:15Because he kicked my ass and told me the next time I see you, I'm gonna still square you
27:21up and stuff like that.
27:22Okay.
27:23He's just crazy.
27:24Okay.
27:24So, yeah, you've had a beef with him for a while.
27:27Yeah.
27:28Where were you when the fire started?
27:30I was up here at my dad's.
27:32Okay.
27:32Who was at the house with you?
27:33My mom.
27:34Your mom was there?
27:35Is your mom over there right now?
27:37Yeah.
27:38Yeah, let's go talk to mom real quick.
27:44Do you remember the day of the fire?
27:45I just remember Gladys that there was fire over .
27:48Okay.
27:49You were here when you heard that on the radio?
27:51Yeah.
27:51Where was Kevin at?
27:52I'm not sure where he was.
27:54He just came back on a four-wheeler and he just went down to the baseball field.
27:58Was he by himself?
27:58He was by himself.
28:00Okay.
28:01Well, thank you.
28:01Okay.
28:04Let's talk to Kevin again and clear this up.
28:06All right.
28:07He's got some explaining to do.
28:11Hey, Kevin.
28:12You mind talking with us out here?
28:15Yeah.
28:15So, basically, what we're trying to do is trying to get a corroboration for you.
28:20You know, an alibi, right?
28:23And we're having a difficult time doing that because it seems like it's not adding up from
28:27what you're telling us and what your mom's telling us.
28:31You think he did it?
28:33I don't really know.
28:34I don't think there's really enough to put him on anything.
28:38There's not enough.
28:38Yeah, I know.
28:40It's frustrating.
29:01I'm Trooper Jason Venable.
29:02I've been with the Alaska State Troopers for about two and a half years now.
29:06A lot of the residential areas we have out here are different than what you'd see in the lower 48.
29:11Here in Alaska, people tend to have a little bit of land, and your neighbor is definitely a neighbor, but
29:17they might not be in shouting distance to you.
29:21We're in a pretty high crime area right now.
29:24A lot of drugs come in and out of this area.
29:26Lots of broke-down cars, lots of trailers, random outbuildings.
29:30A lot of places people can be that we can't see them.
29:33For now, we're just going to cruise around this neighborhood, see if we can't see anything that stands out.
29:45The guy parked on the road, he doesn't want to look up at us.
29:47We're going to stop out with him and have a chat.
29:50Mack, we're here.
29:51I'll be out with a white GMC, white male, orange shirt, getting out and walk away.
29:59Hey, Mack, come here!
30:09Come here! Come here! Come here! Come here! Come here! Come around!
30:13What?
30:14Stop moving!
30:15What you got in here and throw?
30:17Stop moving, put your hands on your back!
30:19Separate your feet! Separate your feet! Do it now!
30:24You don't understand me!
30:25Don't do that!
30:291B48, do you hit your emergency button?
30:3348, 1B10, step it up.
30:351B48, I copy, 1B10, step it up. Can I have any unit heads over?
30:39Stop moving.
30:40Stand up.
30:43You know why I can't talk to you?
30:44No.
30:45Parking in the road.
30:46And you saw me turn around and he came running here to throw something.
30:48I didn't!
30:49Sit down.
30:50Okay, I'm still moving.
30:52On your butt.
30:53This is your how, right?
30:55Yeah, that's my hat.
30:56Okay.
30:57Yeah, I'm putting it on your head so you don't lose it.
30:59Thank you, too.
31:01What's your name?
31:0448, I'm out.
31:06All right, yep.
31:07There you go.
31:10I don't have nothing.
31:12I'm dope, dick, and that's it.
31:13That sucks, man.
31:15The cavalry is almost 1023.
31:18You took off running in this well-known property that we have a lot of drug-type issues.
31:22I'm alone here on the ground with a dude surrounded by metal.
31:25It's a big danger factor.
31:27My radar's pretty spotty and ended up having to activate my emergency button just to let
31:31people know, like, hey, I need serious help right now.
31:33Anything else on here besides that?
31:35I saw you got keys, money, anything else in your pockets?
31:37No.
31:37No knives, guns, machetes, hand grenades?
31:40I don't have .
31:43My ID's right there on my side.
31:45Okay.
31:45You can search my car car.
31:47Will you just hang out with him for a second?
31:49No, I'm not even, I'm not doing nothing.
31:56I'm just looking at my car.
31:58The car's fine, man.
32:00You want to just pull stuff out of his pockets and then put them in the car?
32:04Watch your head.
32:04Watch your head.
32:14Got someone else.
32:15What's up, man?
32:16I'm just wondering what's going on.
32:17You tell me.
32:18How come dudes are showing up at your house and running from the police?
32:21What the ?
32:22Are you the owner of this place?
32:23My mom is.
32:24Oh, okay.
32:25Dude, your guy here showed up and wanted to run from.
32:27What did he say he came here for?
32:29Dope.
32:30Why?
32:31He said he's dope sick.
32:32He's trying to find some.
32:33Can I smack him around a little?
32:34No.
32:35We're here a lot, so maybe we should change some things.
32:39This car's not involved here?
32:41I mean, he talked to me if you want to, but...
32:46Hey, guys.
32:47I'm Trippery Force to the State Troopers.
32:49Just wondering if you guys saw anything today.
32:56Okay.
32:57What's your name, sir?
32:59.
32:59.
33:00NCIC 46, 27, 29 times two witnesses.
33:03Name and date of birth for .
33:06.
33:07.
33:07He's on probation for escape from the third.
33:10Notify when contact.
33:11Okay.
33:13Trooper Yaworski, contact the probation officer.
33:15Probation officer asks for a search of the person.
33:18Hey, can you step out for me, please?
33:21Your probation officer just wants a search of your person.
33:23Done real quick.
33:24Yeah.
33:24There.
33:27You can push something in here.
33:30All right.
33:31Just keep your hands up for me.
33:35During a search, he found a loaded syringe with a brown substance.
33:40What's in the needle?
33:41I don't know.
33:42I picked it up for anything.
33:43Come on.
33:44I picked it up for down the street, actually.
33:47All right.
33:48All right.
33:48I'm just...
33:48You're not under arrest when we go into the den here, okay?
33:51Put you on the screen on your back for me.
33:53My test is going to test positive for heroin or fentanyl.
33:56I'm still going to test positive for heroin or fentanyl.
33:58It's a brown liquid substance, consistent with tar heroin.
34:04And you can see this dark green color coming around the base right there.
34:08So that's a field test positive for heroin.
34:13No.
34:14I'll be going to jail for misconduct of all the controlled substances.
34:24It was the second person we found more controlled substances in her vehicle.
34:29No.
34:30It's my jabs and stuff.
34:33No.
34:33This is tar heroin, and this is crystal meth.
34:36I'm sorry.
34:37You can just walk this way with me, honey.
34:39Right.
34:49That shows you right there what a simple encounter can turn into a short-foot chase,
34:54a fight, multiple searches, and three people going to jail.
35:08I'm Trooper Wesley Booth.
35:10We're currently working night shift.
35:13It's 4.30 in the morning, and with the sun not setting, people being up all day,
35:18the constant daylight absolutely contribute to people's mental health,
35:23or exaggerate underlying things that are there.
35:26So we just have to be ready to probably have a very busy night.
35:32We have a gentleman calling in, and he said people had marched him out of his house at gunpoint,
35:37and that he's just sitting in his front yard.
35:39And like we all know, everybody in Alaska has a gun.
35:43So that is always something to keep in the back of the mind.
35:46We're going to go try to make contact, see exactly what's going on, but of course be cautious.
35:51We just have to assume he's probably going to be armed with something.
35:57Ready?
36:00Let's try to stick to the trees, and just try to listen first.
36:09Okay, let's just make sure we approach cautiously.
36:12Back home with 38B advisors, nobody out front.
36:17Are you ?
36:19Right out of the gate, his emotional state was elevated.
36:23Okay, we're going to walk over here.
36:27Are you ?
36:27And there's people inside with guns.
36:29Okay, walk over here.
36:29They watched him hold me a gun player.
36:31They put a .45 in my face, and told me they were going to have to kill anybody.
36:35Okay.
36:54So you can tell me it's a .45, but you can't tell me how many people were in there.
36:58Really?
36:59I'm just trying to figure out.
37:00I don't know.
37:00Good way to start would be go over there and find out, man.
37:03Well, we're talking with you.
37:04They're over there trying to figure that out.
37:06Well, you get a gun put in your face and they take it over and they tell you...
37:09So you keep saying they, so is it more than one?
37:12Several people.
37:13There's a baby.
37:14A baby.
37:14Okay.
37:15I should slow down.
37:16I get it.
37:16I keep getting it.
37:17I get it.
37:18I got the guy.
37:19All right.
37:20We're trying to help you out.
37:21I don't know.
37:21All right.
37:22But you make it look like it's my fault, dude.
37:24No, we're not blaming you for anything.
37:26We just want to make sure everybody's safe.
37:29I can't.
37:30Tend for any evidence of people being there.
37:33They saw it, man.
37:34And then I walked down there.
37:36No evidence to anybody else.
37:37And I said, and I'm.
37:39Tend floor.
37:39There's nobody in your house.
37:41There's no evidence of people being in your house.
37:43We can go.
37:43Then we need to get my sister into this.
37:46This isn't made up, man.
37:49No.
37:49I don't know.
37:50That's a trooper.
37:52Have you been diagnosed with any mental health issues recently, sir?
37:55I'm not trying to be rude.
37:57I'm just trying to figure out exactly what's going on.
37:59Because I'm not smelling the alcohol, so I don't think you're drunk.
38:02I'm not.
38:02Can you do us a favor and go inside, get some sleep, and then call us back if you still
38:07feel the same way?
38:08They stole $8,500.
38:10Who?
38:12Who?
38:12Who?
38:12The perps, man.
38:14Okay.
38:15There's no evidence of anybody in your house.
38:19There's nobody there.
38:21There's nobody there.
38:22There's no one there.
38:24No one hit my gun.
38:25No, you're not.
38:27Oh, that was good.
38:28With his current mental state, it's hard to know what he may or may not even have in the house.
38:33Go back inside and stay there.
38:36Once we got him in the house, we all left the area, and hopefully that just calms him right back
38:40down.
38:43His story was absolutely all over the place.
38:47A lot of signs telling me he's definitely hallucinating.
38:51I'm thinking a quick decline in mental health, and there's a possibility we'll start dealing with him a little bit
38:58more frequently in the future.
39:16I'm Trooper Trevor Norris.
39:17I've been a Trooper for almost four years now.
39:21We're headed to a village today from Bethel on our vessel here.
39:26This is my partner, Trooper Comfort.
39:28Good friend, great American.
39:31We had a teacher housing that got broken into yesterday and vandalized.
39:35It's going to be about a half-hour boat ride.
39:38Hey, I'm just leaving Bethel and head your way.
39:40Okay.
39:43The village police officers are meeting with us to take us through town.
39:47They end up being our local guides and local knowledge.
39:51So, uh, you guys hearing anything about this teacher housing break-in?
39:56Yeah.
39:56What are you guys hearing?
39:58They're starting to hear rumors in the village of who it might have been, so we're going to follow up
40:03on that.
40:05This house, the one we're going to now, is supposed to be pretty tore up from the vandalism.
40:11I'm a preschool teacher in the winter, and then for summer and Christmas spring, I learned to teach you.
40:18Broken teacher housing is really disappointing.
40:22It makes me think that my teacher friends aren't going to want to come back.
40:28The entirety of the house is destroyed.
40:31Every surface has got fire extinguisher dust on it and urine.
40:36There's a spray-painted phallic images on the walls.
40:39Everything's just scattered everywhere.
40:42That is a mess that I don't want to be the guy cleaning up.
40:45Those are pretty small.
40:47Right here, there's a couple footprints that appears this is probably a juvenile.
40:52So we have two suspects.
40:54Both appear smaller-footed.
40:58So I'm going to go talk to the other suspects.
41:00Young here, it was one of the fellas that went in there.
41:03Did you see other boys?
41:05Huh?
41:05Yeah, where the brothers are.
41:08As we've been talking to each person involved, they keep mentioning more names.
41:12My uncle.
41:14Who's your uncle?
41:16That's all I know.
41:17Okay.
41:18Who all was in there with you?
41:19Just my friend.
41:22What did you take?
41:23Oh, I'm cool.
41:24Okay.
41:26Well, this has quickly turned into most of the children in the village participating in this
41:32teacher housing takeover.
41:36We weren't able to recover a Nintendo gaming device, but we're talking $5,000 for damage.
41:43In a situation like this, it's just not feasible to take 15 to 20 juveniles back to Bethel,
41:49all through a juvenile holding facility.
41:51So hopefully we'll get the community to work on cleaning this up.
42:05I've got deep roots here in Alaska.
42:08Alaska's in my blood.
42:09I was born here.
42:10Hopefully this is where I die.
42:12I mean, hopefully not right here in Tuk Suk Bay, but hopefully Alaska is home for the rest
42:17of my life.
