00:00And CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers responds to questions about this morning's triple homicide in Belmont
00:05as he addresses the media today's post-cabinet briefing.
00:09He said the police service is working to bring those criminals to justice.
00:14The loss of life is always something that is extremely difficult to treat with,
00:20but more so the loss of life of a child.
00:23And I know in terms of just leaving the cabinet room, this was an issue that was discussed.
00:30Both Ministers Sturge and Minister Alexander weighed in on the issue.
00:36I would not wish to get into the specifics of what they would have said,
00:41but that it is receiving active attention by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service
00:46who are arduously working to bring those criminals to justice.
00:52On behalf of the government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, our heart goes out to the family.
00:57And in whatever way that we can support, as we usually do, we will definitely be there for them.
01:03The Foreign Affairs Minister also said he is satisfied that the government and the police service are doing their best.
01:11I am satisfied that the Ministers of Homeland Security and Defence are doing their best to arrest the situation.
01:20I am satisfied that the government, led by the Prime Minister,
01:23that we are doing our best to arrest the crime situation currently right now.
01:27I am equally satisfied that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service are employing all the best forms of apparatus at
01:36their disposal
01:37to treat with the crime situation in this country.
01:40And Minister Sobers also responded to criticisms from Opposition MP Stuart Young.
01:47As a former National Security Minister, and for a short period of time that he was Prime Minister as well,
01:53the murder rate in this country spiralled totally out of control.
01:57So that as a responsible, compassionate, intelligent, driven administration,
02:07we will take no such advice from former Minister Young.
02:11As a matter of fact, he should be more concerned with respect to other things
02:19that he has been sticking his nose into, which he ought not at this point in time.
02:28And MP for Port of Spain North, St. Anne's West, Stuart Young,
02:32says the fact that today's triple murder was carried out in broad daylight
02:36demonstrates that the Kamala-Passad government has no crime plan apart from states of emergency.
02:42In a Facebook post, Young goes further to call out a junior minister
02:46who he did not name, but accuses of going on a racist rant about his constituents in Belmont,
02:52adding insult to the pain that citizens are already feeling with a loss of life.
02:57In offering his condolences to the family and friends of two-year-old Akini
03:00and others who lost their lives, MP Young urges his constituents to, quote,
03:06ignore the crass and heartless racist comments of the government, end quote.
03:11Young says he prays that God intervenes and blesses Trinidad and Tobago.
03:16He prays that God intervenes and blesses Trinidad and Tobago.
