00:00Going on 30, now she's back with a new series of hit thriller.
00:03The last thing he told me, it's Jennifer Garner.
00:08Hey!
00:10Oh, so nice to see you.
00:12You are a nice.
00:14Lovely to see you.
00:14Here you go, gentlemen.
00:16And this Oscar-winning star of Traffic and Sicario
00:21made his mark as the mumbling venster in The Usual Suspects.
00:24Now he's earned another Oscar nod for his role
00:27in one battle after another.
00:28It's the great Benicio Del Doro!
00:33Mind your head.
00:34Mind your head.
00:35Lovely to see you.
00:36All right, all right.
00:37Come in, sit down.
00:44Hello, everybody.
00:46Very nice to see you.
00:47Nice to see you.
00:47It looks slightly like a showbiz funeral, but...
00:51Did wardrobe dress us?
00:53I'm sorry.
00:54No, I thought my pop star might bust out of colour, but no.
00:58No, no.
00:58I'm always in mourning.
00:59OK.
01:01And before we get started on everything we talked about,
01:03I must say to Benicio Del Toro, happy birthday.
01:07Is it Feliz cumpleaños?
01:09Cumpleaños, yes.
01:10Cumpleaños.
01:10Feliz cumpleaños.
01:27Snap.
01:29Snap.
01:30Snap.
01:30That's not my own business.
01:31Come on.
01:33Thanks, Gordon.
01:33Test your eyes.
01:3750...
01:3850...
01:3950...
01:4050...
01:4050...
01:4060...
01:41You're crazy, 59.
01:42Come on.
01:43Seriously.
01:44Amazing.
01:44Amazing.
01:44And are you going out afterwards?
01:46Are you having a little celebration?
01:49Yeah.
01:49Yeah.
01:50OK.
01:51Well, you know, yes, yes, I will.
01:53But I'm a little jet-lagged.
01:55I just got in from Los Angeles, California, so I'm a little like...
01:59Oh, OK.
01:59Yeah.
02:00Yeah, so...
02:00Yeah, so I might go out and not go out.
02:03Yeah.
02:03Do you normally go big on a birthday?
02:05No.
02:06OK.
02:06So this is OK.
02:08This is OK.
02:08This is OK.
02:08You don't mind.
02:09This is as big as he's gotten.
02:11A lot of well-wishers.
02:12Yeah.
02:13Well, happy birthday to you.
02:14We've got lots of great stuff to talk about tonight, so we're going to get started with
02:17Benicio del Toro.
02:18He is part of this extraordinary ensemble cast in Paul Thomas Anderson's epic One Battle
02:24After Another.
02:24You can still see it in selected cinemas and, of course, it's available to rent or buy now.
02:30And the movie's been out for a while, but if people have not seen it, tell us about
02:35one battle after another.
02:37It's a rollercoaster.
02:38It really is.
02:39It's an emotional rollercoaster.
02:41I think that it's a real...
02:44Help me out.
02:46OK.
02:46Well, it's...
02:47Somebody help me.
02:48I know you've talked about it so, so much.
02:52Surprisingly, it's a comedy because it's a drama and you're...
02:57Can I just say, well done, Jennifer.
02:58Yeah, no, I get it.
02:59You're very good.
03:00And it's a father-daughter relationship, really.
03:03It's a father-daughter relationship.
03:03And you're on the edge of your seat.
03:06But then all of a sudden, Benicio shows up and you're dying laughing, cracking up.
03:11He's the showman of the century.
03:14I mean, right?
03:15Thank you, Jennifer.
03:15I'm an academy.
03:17You're so good at P.L.
03:17You should do mine as well.
03:18I will do.
03:19I will do.
03:20I've got you.
03:20Yeah, I've got you.
03:22But it's a great ride and I...
03:25It's just one incredible performance.
03:26It's directed by one of the great filmmakers right now.
03:29One of the great great filmmakers ever.
03:31Yeah.
03:31Paul Thomas Anderson.
03:32It's one great performance after all.
03:33Yeah.
03:38Everyone should have a wingman.
03:39Everyone should have a wingman.
03:41Yes.
03:41I'm going to force Benicio to say something about this film.
03:44OK, yeah.
03:44So, Paul Thomas Anderson, who you've worked with before, like, he really wanted you for
03:48this part.
03:49Like, he waited.
03:51Yeah.
03:55I'm ready to go.
03:58Give me the nod.
03:59Yes.
04:00But that's unusual, isn't it?
04:01Like, they started filming and then there was a big pause.
04:04Yes.
04:08I'm going to come up with a question.
04:10I'm going to come up with one.
04:12You're going to chat.
04:13This is what happened.
04:15This is what happened.
04:17This is what happened.
04:17We were planning to do the film after I was going to do another film called The Phoenician
04:22Scheme.
04:22Oh, yeah.
04:23Directed by Wes Anderson.
04:24And there was a strike.
04:27So, everything got tossed in the air.
04:30Yeah.
04:31Tussed up.
04:31And I just, so they, you know, I said to Paul, I can't do it first.
04:37You know, and then they decided and they waited.
04:40So, but, you know, I'm very grateful for Leo and Sean Penn and Paul because they sat there
04:48and waited, you know.
04:49Well, we've got a clip.
04:50You can watch this now.
04:52Yeah.
04:52Sit back.
04:54Enjoy.
04:54Relax.
04:55This is you as a sensei helping Bob, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, make his escape.
05:08I've watched that clip a few times now.
05:10How did the rug do?
05:11What is that?
05:12Is there a little string on it?
05:13I don't know.
05:15Because if you notice, I never saw it.
05:17Yeah, you're older.
05:18Yeah.
05:18I didn't know.
05:19It's like, wait, it's like a little bit Charlie Chaplin-esque or something like that?
05:23It's a beautiful detail.
05:24A little Benny Hill.
05:25Yeah.
05:25Yes.
05:26Now, Charlie, you are a big film fan and Letterboxd, would I say you were obsessed by Letterboxd?
05:33Yeah.
05:34That would be completely accurate.
05:36And you don't just read it, you write on Letterboxd.
05:38Yeah.
05:38I log the films, I write about some of them, yeah.
05:43Yeah.
05:43And one of them is one battle after another.
05:46Correct.
05:47Yeah.
05:47Now, I guess when you wrote that review, you didn't know you'd be sitting on this couch.
05:51No.
05:53And now I'm killing myself wanting to know what I wrote.
05:57Well, let me tell you.
05:58Let me tell you.
06:00Big, long review of what I wrote.
06:02Anyway, so, in general, Tiana and Chase were on fire.
06:06Leo's timing kills me.
06:08He is so damn funny.
06:09And I think I'm beginning to realise that I'm just obsessed with Benicio.
06:14That's right.
06:15There you go.
06:17That's funny.
06:24Now, do you do other reviews?
06:25Do you do, like, TripAdvisor and things?
06:28Yeah.
06:29I like to spread myself across all the apps, you know?
06:32But wait, you had a honeymoon.
06:34What?
06:34Didn't it say there I wasn't watching films because of the honeymoon?
06:38Yes.
06:39Wait, you said that.
06:40I mean, you said that.
06:40You read it all.
06:41Yeah.
06:41You read the whole thing real quick.
06:43Yeah.
06:43That's...
06:43You're on it, Jennifer.
06:45Nothing gets faster.
06:45I am ready for this struggle.
06:48Mrs. Markle.
06:49Yeah.
06:50Honeymoon.
06:51Yes, that's two.
06:52That's two.
06:52Well, congratulations.
06:54And, Gordon, do you read, like, because back in the day when you started...
07:01What?
07:02No, because back in the day, like, it was just restaurant reviewers.
07:05That was the only reviews you got.
07:06Now, anybody with a phone can write a review.
07:10No, but you're about to drop me the shit big time.
07:12Oh, am I?
07:13Because you know I kicked out Joan Collins by accident.
07:16Yes.
07:16Well, not quite by accident.
07:17Well, she was with a critic that absolutely panned the restaurant prior
07:22and they turned back up literally a few months later.
07:25And I said to this critic, thanks but no thanks, but Joan was his guest
07:30and so she was furious.
07:31But didn't you leave them sitting there for quite a long time before you told them?
07:35Well, they refused to go.
07:36Oh!
07:37So I just asked my maitredi to strip the table down to the bare wood.
07:41I did apologise to Joan after it, OK?
07:44A big, big hiccup.
07:45But still to this day, she's never forgiven me.
07:47Oh, really?
07:48No, she's fine.
07:49Oh, yeah.
07:50Yeah, OK.
07:51It's hard though, isn't it, when you're sort of under that kind of criticism
07:54when you're being judged by individuals that are less about food than you
07:57and the same in the movies and albums, etc.
07:59So now today in the restaurants, everyone's got a phone,
08:02everyone's a critic and these things go viral like, you know, in seconds.
08:06Yeah.
08:06And it's funny, you know, people love films.
08:09And in this country, obviously the Bond franchise is huge.
08:12And Benicio Del Toro, it wasn't your first movie, was it?
08:16My second movie.
08:17Your second movie.
08:18Yeah.
08:18Wow.
08:18You were in Licence to Kill with Timothy Dalton.
08:21There you are.
08:23Wow.
08:24Good, good noise, everyone.
08:27Oh.
08:28It's a new colour.
08:29He was semi.
08:30Yeah.
08:30He was young once upon a time.
08:33But you, but to play it, you were kind of a henchman and you had
08:36to audition for the big producer Cubby Broccoli.
08:38Cubby Broccoli, the legend, yeah.
08:40Yeah.
08:40And, well, I remember going to the audition and I went into his office,
08:46a big desk.
08:47He had a big buckle.
08:48I remember that.
08:49And he asked me how tall I was and how much I weigh.
08:54Wow.
08:54And I gave him my answer and he went.
08:59And he fell asleep.
09:01For real?
09:02Yeah.
09:03Wow.
09:04Did you wait for him to wake up?
09:06Well, no, he woke up in a second and said, yeah, okay.
09:09You've got it.
09:12Did he think you'd done an audition?
09:14And he was just covering his embarrassment.
09:16No, no.
09:16I had done several auditions.
09:17Oh, okay.
09:18But this was the first time to go meet him.
09:20Yeah, yeah.
09:20But just going back to the film, Benicio, one battle after another.
09:23One of the defining things about it is that there's a lot of real people in it, not actors.
09:28Particularly people with jobs tend to be the real people, if you know what I mean.
09:34Yeah.
09:34For example, when I get arrested at the end, at the end of my story, the two people that arrested
09:40me were actual police officers.
09:43Okay.
09:43So, you know.
09:44Well, actually, we've got that clip.
09:46And people love this scene.
09:47People who've seen the movie just love this scene where you get arrested by these real police officers.
09:52Let's have a look at it.
09:53Amazing.
09:54It's so good.
09:58And that wasn't completely scripted.
10:03It wasn't completely scripted.
10:04You know, I was talking to Paul, the director, a few days ago.
10:08And he was saying, do you remember?
10:10Because it's kind of strange how you do a movie and then suddenly it clicks.
10:15You know, it's just, you have no control over that.
10:19And suddenly it clicked and it just goes viral now.
10:23It's in people's phones and they have clips.
10:25And so he asked me, do you remember saying when you said that line?
10:29And I said it maybe two or three times, few small beers.
10:33But I do remember telling myself that I didn't want to lie to the police officers.
10:41I don't remember really saying the line, but I do remember saying to myself, I'm not going to lie.
10:46Were you actually drunk?
10:48No.
10:49OK.
10:49Just checking.
10:50And Oscars, is it, I think you got 13 nominations at the Oscars?
10:55Wow.
10:55I didn't count.
10:57Yeah, people like what they say.
10:58And I didn't verify it.
11:00Yeah.
11:00But I'll take it.
11:02Yeah.
11:02Yeah.
11:04And second most nominated at the Oscars, you are the most nominated movie at the BAFTAs.
11:08Was it 14 nominations?
11:10A bunch.
11:11Yeah, it's a lot.
11:12Yeah.
11:13And that's this weekend, isn't it?
11:15Yeah.
11:16I think the director's nominated, Leo's nominated, Tiana Taylor, Chase Infinity.
11:22Yeah.
11:23Yeah.
11:23Most of it is Sean Penn.
11:24I'm nominated for that movie.
11:25Are you?
11:26No.
11:27I just found that.
11:28Dimples, yes.
11:28And I think Best Supporting Actor on the night, that's up early, isn't it?
11:33Is it?
11:33I think so.
11:34That's good.
11:34I know, it's very good.
11:36Yeah.
11:36Get it over with.
11:37Get it out of the way.
11:38Yeah.
11:39Good luck on Sunday at the BAFTAs.
11:42Good luck to everyone at the Oscars.
11:44And if you haven't seen One Battle After Another, you can.
11:47It's available to stream now.
11:48Very good.
11:49Amazing.
11:50All right.
11:53Now, Jennifer Garner isn't just here to tell us about One Battle After Another.
12:00No.
12:01She's in something.
12:02She is.
12:03She's in the second season of her hit thriller, The Last Thing He Told Me.
12:07Eight episodes available weekly starting today on Apple TV.
12:11And before we talk about it, here's a taste.
12:15It's perfect.
12:16I know.
12:20And so this is based on the novels by Laura Daves and you play Hannah Hall and that first
12:27season ended on this big cliffhanger.
12:28We didn't know what was going on.
12:29So what's happening to Hannah Hall now?
12:32Well, the first season is really about this woman, Hannah Hall, whose husband disappears
12:39and leaves her with her disgruntled teenager stepdaughter.
12:42Teenage stepdaughter.
12:44And the two of them have to figure out where did he go?
12:46Why?
12:47And in the process, they realize, oh my gosh, we're in a lot of danger.
12:50At the end of the first season, Hannah makes a deal that assures their safety.
12:56You have a five year time cut and you don't know what's happened in those five years.
13:01And suddenly he reappears for just a moment and then boom, the first season ends.
13:06The second season begins at that, there's an overlap of that same scene where he appears.
13:11And then you back up and find out what she's been doing during that time, which is she's
13:16been getting ready for the inevitable return of the danger that they were in.
13:22And the story, the story takes you to France, where we discover that Hannah can speak French.
13:29Yes.
13:29Did Jennifer Garner know that Hannah could speak French?
13:32No, I didn't and I don't speak French at all.
13:35And when I was starting to learn, my kids speak French.
13:38And so I was saying my first line that I learned, which was,
13:44Je suis tenu ce bois. J'ai étudié avec Gilles Gérard après Saint-Martin.
13:51Ah.
13:52Okay.
13:54Is that okay?
13:55They laughed so much when I was learning this.
13:59And so I used my daughter's, instead of like a proper Hollywood French tutor,
14:02I used my daughter's French teacher from school, um, Dr. Reinholz.
14:06Bonjour, Dr. Reinholz.
14:10And he was my tutor.
14:12But now you've been doing press in France.
14:14I have been doing...
14:16...press with the French press and not one of them has mentioned how much French I speak.
14:22And it's giving me a complex.
14:24So, if you guys want to write in one of the reviews, could you please?
14:28And say, wow, the French is just...
14:31I'll tear it up.
14:31Charlie's on it. Charlie's on it.
14:32Thank you. Thank you very much.
14:34Magnifique, c'est magnifique.
14:36And here's the thing.
14:37Jennifer, here you are back on episodic television,
14:40where you got your big break, Alias.
14:42Mm-hmm.
14:42And that show, it must have been so intense,
14:45because you had to learn...
14:47Like every episode, you were doing something new.
14:50So much.
14:50Yes, every episode.
14:51It was very, it was very stunt heavy.
14:53There was a...
14:54Every Sunday, I would have...
14:56They would say,
14:56OK, hi, I'm here, I'm your Swedish tutor.
14:59Hi, I'm here, I'm your Japanese tutor.
15:01And then the fight team would come over.
15:03And we would fight in the backyard,
15:05and they would teach me that week's fights.
15:08And then I would go and do them.
15:10But it was...
15:10Yeah, it was wild.
15:12It was like back before they really cared that you were doing a huge stunt.
15:16I heard...
15:18Wow.
15:19Well, right there.
15:20There you have it.
15:23Congratulations, me.
15:29This is what you show.
15:31That's like the coolest thing ever.
15:32I was rushing there, just for the record.
15:34OK.
15:35What is the stunt?
15:36What is that stunt?
15:37It's a high kick.
15:38Yeah.
15:38It's falling off a sideboard.
15:40Yeah.
15:41But I heard you talking in an interview where Angelina Jolie had done some movie,
15:45and they were making a big fuss.
15:47Do you know this story?
15:47Yes.
15:48There's a building in downtown Los Angeles that we used for a lot of stunts for some reason.
15:53And I was constantly jumping off this building with a descender, you know.
15:58And I'm scared of that, but if somebody says action loudly enough, you do crazy things.
16:03And so I would hurl myself off this building and scream the whole way down,
16:07Ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma.
16:09And so I did it.
16:12Nobody cared, but I did it for a bunch of different episodes.
16:15And then I saw this huge, like, headwoods, ta-na-na-na-na-na, headlines everywhere,
16:20ba-ba-ba-ba-ba.
16:22Angelina Jolie does her own stunt.
16:24She jumps off, and I was like, that's that building.
16:27It's a big deal.
16:28I didn't realise nobody covered me doing it.
16:32Is it true that that show made CIA job applications spike?
16:36Oh, it did.
16:37It's called The Sydney Effect.
16:39Oh, it's actually got a name.
16:40Yeah.
16:40There's a band of women all about the same age who were coming of age, you know,
16:45right when Alias...
16:46Did you guys ever see Alias?
16:48Yeah, it was on here.
16:49Yeah, it was on here.
16:50I'm looking for some kind of love.
16:54Yeah, thanks.
16:56We got it.
16:56Yes, we saw it.
16:57Yeah.
16:58We're getting over here.
16:59Anyway, yes, a bunch of young women joined the CIA.
17:03Wow.
17:04Yeah.
17:04Listen, Jennifer, good luck with your latest thriller.
17:07You can see season two of The Last Thing He Told Me
17:10on Apple TV episode one is available right now.
17:13Very good.
17:15Now...
17:15APPLAUSE
17:17This is extraordinary.
17:20Charlie XCX, award-winning singer-songwriter, has turned actor in the moment.
17:26It's opened in cinemas today.
17:28And so you're playing...
17:30You're playing a version of yourself.
17:32Yes.
17:33And I'm a real...
17:35Bitch.
17:37Yeah.
17:38So it's a mockumentary, but it started...
17:41I mean, so tell us about the genesis of this idea.
17:44Sure, yeah.
17:45I basically just kind of come off this sort of huge, like, change in my life
17:49where I'd made this album Brat and it had kind of opened me up to...
17:54Oh, thanks.
17:56Thanks.
17:57It had kind of opened me up to this whole new audience that I just...
18:01You know, I'd never really experienced anything like before.
18:04I'd never experienced, like, that scale of people being interested in what I had to say.
18:10Yeah.
18:10And, you know, that was quite a, like, heavy, like, confusing fun
18:15but sometimes very, like, vulnerable change, you know?
18:19And I...
18:20My way of responding to anything is to make art.
18:23And I've also, you know, been making music and been in the industry since I was 15.
18:28And I think, as with all of our industries, you know, you meet a lot of...
18:32of characters.
18:34Some of them are awesome and some of them aren't.
18:37And so I felt that, you know, the music industry is so ripe for satire
18:40and with what I'd been through coupled with that,
18:43I kind of felt like I wanted to do this mockumentary of my experience.
18:47And when your friends watch this film...
18:49Yeah.
18:49Like, will they kind of go, oh, that's not really Charlie?
18:53Or will they...
18:55Like, what are the differences?
18:57What are the differences between the moment Charlie and this Charlie?
19:00Well, you know, I think I'm touching on real parts of myself, obviously.
19:04Like, I've definitely had many a breakdown in the back of a van
19:09and chain smoked a pack of cigarettes and screamed.
19:11But I don't...
19:12It's like I don't do it all the time, but in this film I do it a lot.
19:15You know?
19:16So, yeah.
19:17Well, listen, we've got a clip.
19:18This is you getting some direction from the director that's brought in,
19:23played by Alexander Skarsgård.
19:25Very good.
19:26And...
19:28And...
19:30Presumably, you know, you're satirising it here,
19:35but presumably there must have been a lot of pressure on you
19:38to keep Rat Summer going that you had to resist.
19:42Yeah.
19:42I mean, it's sort of, you know, it probably did go on a bit too long,
19:46you know?
19:47But, um, I think this film is probably the end.
19:52You know?
19:53Honestly, it is extraordinary because, you know,
19:56Gordon Ramsay, you were all over Rat Summer, weren't you?
19:58I have three daughters, yes.
20:00Yeah.
20:01Yes, they loved it.
20:02Yeah.
20:03And Jennifer, Benicio, were you aware of Rat Summer?
20:05Very aware, yes.
20:06I have three kids, yeah.
20:07All about it.
20:08Yeah, my daughter.
20:09Also.
20:09She's 14.
20:11She's 14, yeah.
20:12I'm hit with the kids.
20:13I love it.
20:15It's better than people being like,
20:17my grandma loves you!
20:21Right?
20:22But I mean, as parents of children,
20:25do the children, do their behaviour get worse?
20:28Or, like, do they channel what they thought Brat was?
20:32Just attitude, you know, in abundance and loud volume.
20:35I think the older you get, the lower you want the volume,
20:37and it's like...
20:38I mean, I feel like they could have got that from you.
20:40LAUGHTER
20:41To be honest.
20:43APPLAUSE
20:45You know what it's like.
20:46Yeah.
20:48It's been Brat Kitchen for some time.
20:50Yeah.
20:53Oh, man.
20:54Now, Charlie, I'm here to tell you,
20:56not the only pop star on the couch,
20:59because Benicio del Toro,
21:02he starred in Madonna's video for La Isla Bonita.
21:07Back in the day.
21:09Turn it down.
21:09Turn it down.
21:10Turn it down.
21:10I didn't star.
21:11Oh, wait a minute.
21:12I think if we watch closely, we can see you.
21:15If you...
21:17A big magnifying glass.
21:18You're the Courtney Cox of the...
21:20Let's watch it.
21:21No, you are in this.
21:22I wasn't...
21:23I was an extra.
21:24Yes.
21:25Yeah.
21:25But there weren't many extras.
21:27Oh, I don't know.
21:28There were a lot of dancers.
21:29I wasn't dancing.
21:30I was just sitting there.
21:31Like I'm now.
21:32In the bit that we're going to enjoy,
21:35Benicio is the one sitting on the car.
21:37Okay?
21:38Please find him.
21:39Okay.
21:40Eyes peeled, everyone.
21:41Here we go.
21:42There he is.
21:43Right there.
21:43Right there.
21:45Wait.
21:45No.
21:46We'll see him again.
21:46We'll see him again.
21:48There's Madonna, obviously.
21:50There's a man.
21:50There he is.
21:51Right there.
21:59Look at you.
22:01Look at you.
22:02Right here.
22:02How the hell did that happen?
22:06Well, it was a job.
22:08Okay.
22:08Yeah.
22:09Yeah.
22:09It was a job.
22:10I was an extra.
22:11You know, I was a fan of Madonna,
22:12but I was also a fan of Sean Penn.
22:15They were together.
22:17And I thought maybe if I go there,
22:18maybe I get to meet them.
22:20Did you?
22:21No.
22:22No.
22:22Not there.
22:22Later.
22:23Okay.
22:24Now you know him.
22:25Did you meet Madonna or anything?
22:27Later.
22:28Okay, but not then.
22:29No.
22:29You were just the guy in the car.
22:30I'm just the guy in the car with everybody else.
22:33How long did you have to sit on that car for?
22:35You've got to start somewhere.
22:36Yes.
22:37Yeah.
22:38You're in it.
22:38Yeah.
22:39I'm in it.
22:41And it's 2026 and we're looking at it on the chat show.
22:44Did you go from this to James Bond?
22:48I think James Bond was in the can.
22:51Wow.
22:52Yeah.
22:52Amazing.
22:53I think, yeah.
22:54This is after James Bond.
22:55Yeah.
22:56It really wasn't the break you were hoping for.
23:01You've got to make a living.
23:03Yeah.
23:03You've got to make a living.
23:04Yeah.
23:05Charlie, when you kind of started performing,
23:08you were doing these raves.
23:10You were singing at raves in East London.
23:12Yeah.
23:12But your parents would have to bring you because you were so young.
23:15Yeah.
23:15Yeah.
23:16I was sort of like 15 when I first started going.
23:19And, you know, it's that time where you were kind of like,
23:22I'm going to be so independent and cool.
23:24I'm going to go to these raves.
23:25And then my parents were like, and we're coming with you.
23:28You know?
23:29So it's like the rebellion just got kind of like taken from my grasp.
23:32And then we were this weird family who went to raves.
23:36I love how sweet.
23:37Your parents sound adorable.
23:39They're very sweet.
23:39What's the story you're, someone tried to sell drugs to your dad?
23:44He, he, uh, yeah.
23:45He, I, he hates when I tell the story.
23:47But yes, he...
23:48I think it comes out of it very well.
23:50Yeah.
23:50Well, it's very, you know, loud.
23:51It's loud in the rave.
23:53Of course.
23:53It's very loud.
23:53And I think they were trying to sell him some MDMA or something.
23:57And I think there was a sort of miscommunication about whether it was MDF.
24:03LAUGHTER
24:04Or wood.
24:05Cattling or something.
24:07So, you know, I think, I don't think he really wanted either.
24:10LAUGHTER
24:11I think there was just some sort of miscommunication there.
24:14You know, understandably so.
24:15I just love that.
24:17Yeah.
24:17Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:18Yeah.
24:19He was approaching it in a very positive way.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Of course someone would try to sell me MDF.
24:23Yeah.
24:24Why not?
24:24Yeah.
24:25Yeah, yeah.
24:26And congratulations to you, the number one album in the land, Wuthering Heights.
24:31CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
24:36Because I was thinking, if someone had said, even two years ago,
24:41Charlie XAX will have a number one album with an album called Wuthering Heights.
24:45Yeah.
24:46People wouldn't have thought that was happening.
24:48Absolutely not.
24:49I can still believe it's happening.
24:51I feel very, very lucky and happy.
24:53Fair enough.
24:53Listen, we look forward to all your work.
24:55And just a reminder, you can see Charlie in The Moment.
24:58It's in cinemas at this very moment.
25:00Very good.
25:03CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
25:04Yeah.
25:08Gordon Ramsay, for it is he, brings us a very true-to-life version of events
25:13in his new documentary series, Being Gordon Ramsay.
25:16It's out now on Netflix.
25:19So, they were filming you for what, over a year?
25:22Yeah, just over.
25:2314 months.
25:24Yeah.
25:24And they're following you on this extraordinary restaurant project.
25:28Yes.
25:28I know you say it is, but presumably it is your most ambitious project to date.
25:33Tell us about it.
25:34Yeah.
25:3622 Bishop's Gate.
25:37It's sort of, you know, the sort of iconic address.
25:40Tallest restaurant in Europe.
25:42And, you know, 35,000 square feet.
25:45And then setting up five operations on two floors.
25:49Oh, there they all are.
25:50So...
25:50Yeah.
25:51This one isn't open yet, but it's opening.
25:53Yes, that's right.
25:53Better to your kitchen.
25:54Lucky Cat opened?
25:55Lucky Cat opened.
25:57Terrace?
25:57We've got the terrace.
25:58Roof, not done yet, but it's coming.
26:00You're kidding.
26:01It's still not done.
26:02Well, it's sort of, but...
26:04It's...
26:05I've seen the documentary.
26:07It's like, dear God, is it not done yet?
26:09It's been bloody raining for 49 days.
26:11I'm so glad.
26:12I'm so glad.
26:13At this level, you still can't get things done.
26:16No, no.
26:17It's rather high, honestly.
26:19You see helicopters underneath you, you see those planes underneath you going to City Airport.
26:23The Academy is up and running brilliantly, which is great.
26:27And then...
26:28What's this bit?
26:29What's the big bit here?
26:30That's the air conditioning.
26:31Oh, OK.
26:33It's a lovely temperature, Benicio.
26:36You'll enjoy it.
26:37It's perfect.
26:38I love it.
26:38Honestly, I don't think I could have done this, you know, 10, 15 years ago.
26:41The project is massive.
26:43Yeah.
26:43And everything comes up in that elevator.
26:47Every pot, every pan, every screw, every air conditioning duct, you name it, it comes
26:52up that elevator.
26:53Yeah.
26:53Pretty incredible.
26:54And here's the thing.
26:55You've been on telly for a long time.
26:57Yes.
26:57We've seen you on screen a lot.
26:59But in this, I wonder, how nervous were you?
27:02Because in this, it is different.
27:04Because there's cameras in your house, we see your family, we see your relationship.
27:08Mm-hm.
27:09And that's new for you, isn't it?
27:11Yeah, to a certain extent.
27:12I think if I go back to the sort of beginning of the F-words, buying all the kids animals,
27:16you know, to understand where food comes from and that sort of, don't waste, only take
27:21what you need and respect food.
27:22And so, I think this was an important sort of insight to the sort of, you know, the 360, the
27:31pressure, the insight, the family time.
27:34And when we're on, we're on.
27:36When we're off, we're off.
27:36And I wanted that to come across beautifully.
27:38And there are some very sweet moments with you as a dad.
27:41And we've got a clip.
27:43This is you with Tilly.
27:46And Tilly's off to, I presume she's in catering school now or culinary school now.
27:50Yeah, just finished.
27:50Yeah, she didn't want to work in any of my restaurants, sadly.
27:53So she went off to Ballymolo in court.
27:56Yeah, she spent an amazing time there to train, to come back to the fold.
28:00And this is Gordon and Tilly, and Tilly's buying her first chef whites.
28:04So sweet!
28:06Yeah, tough.
28:07Quite a moment.
28:08Quite a moment.
28:09Because I think, you know, it's too easy to say, I'm not a big fan of that nepo stuff.
28:15And all we said from day one, find your passion, understand your worth, and don't follow.
28:20You know, create your own individuality.
28:22So, from a police officer to a Royal Marine Commando, to a chef and to Holly in fashion,
28:27they have found their true passion.
28:29And so, I never wanted to put the pressure on the team with Ramsay's kids in the restaurant
28:34and treading on eggshells.
28:35And so, Tills, don't take this the wrong way, but go off and learn from somebody else
28:40in an incredible cookery school, and then come back to the fold established
28:43and try and show the old man something.
28:46Yeah.
28:47And she's done just that.
28:48Now, I know who'd love to go to that academy, Charlie XCX.
28:52Any time.
28:53Because your culinary skills, they're not great right now.
28:57Minus 100.
28:59No.
28:59No, no, no, like really.
29:00No.
29:00Yeah, I would poison you innocent.
29:01No, I'd teach you, honestly.
29:03I thought it's just...
29:04It's just not...
29:05It's just...
29:06My husband's a great cook.
29:08So, why would I bother?
29:10No.
29:13Yes.
29:14You know what I mean?
29:15Yes.
29:17Fair enough.
29:18Let him do his thing.
29:19He loves it.
29:21Yeah.
29:22Luckily, we do have a chef on the couch, Jennifer Garner.
29:25Yes.
29:26No, you could properly cook.
29:27And what do you...
29:28Now, you do your pretend cooking show.
29:30Yeah, it's pretend.
29:31No, but it's kind of real.
29:32It's because I'm such a fan of actual cooking shows that I just...
29:37I mean, I cannot wait to see your movie.
29:40I'm so excited for it.
29:41But I kind of...
29:42I don't spoof them.
29:44I'm just...
29:44I don't...
29:46I'm a humble chef.
29:48I'm a mom cook.
29:49I cook for my kids.
29:50And you cook with your mom?
29:51Your mom...
29:51Oh, sometimes.
29:52Yeah.
29:52Yes, my mom.
29:53Yeah.
29:54It's Patricia Ann.
29:55Yeah.
29:55Well, there she is, Patricia Ann.
29:56There she is.
29:57Yeah.
29:57Oh, she loves it.
29:58She is going to be thrilled that she was mentioned here.
30:02It turns out, I have found out that my mom wishes she were famous.
30:05And she said,
30:06Jennifer, I was at the airport and four people recognised me.
30:10And I'm like, oh, great, Mom.
30:12That's wonderful.
30:13But it's here, I sense you are a good cook.
30:17No.
30:18And I'm not married.
30:21So, um, no, I can cook an egg.
30:25That's about it.
30:25A fried egg.
30:26I can fry it.
30:27No, come on.
30:28You can do more than a fried egg.
30:29Oh, maybe I could do a hot dog.
30:34You know, I...
30:35I got my little things that I like.
30:38Put a little bit of relish on my egg.
30:40Right.
30:42Right there.
30:43Wow.
30:43It does give me a little, like, twang.
30:45Love that.
30:46A little chilli crisp.
30:47Yeah, a little bit.
30:48Love that.
30:48A little bit of mustard.
30:50Eggs with relish and hot dogs.
30:52Wow.
30:54I mean, not that I'm doing any better.
30:58You're being very judging.
31:01My husband would never serve me that.
31:06Just a reminder, you can see Gordon doing his thing in being Gordon Ramsay.
31:10It is on Netflix right now.
31:12Very good.
31:13OK.
31:18This is exciting.
31:19It is time for music.
31:20This band have won 15 Grammys, five Brit Awards, and topped the UK charts six times.
31:25They're here tonight, performing the title track from their forthcoming album, your favourite toy.
31:30It is Foo Fighters.
31:32Very nice to see you.
31:34Very nice to see you.
31:35Come on up.
31:36Say hello to everyone.
31:37Hey, Gordon.
31:38Hey, Gordon.
31:39Charlie.
31:40Jennifer.
31:40How are you?
31:41Good to see you.
31:42Good to see you.
31:43Good to see you.
31:43Good to see you.
31:45Good to see you.
31:48It was like a wall of sound.
31:50It was fantastic.
31:51Absolutely fantastic.
31:53Can I just say, you've been on the show a couple of times before, but it's the first time you
31:57brought the whole circus to town.
31:59I know.
31:59So thank you very much.
31:59I know it's a lot of work to bring the whole Foo Fighters experience anywhere.
32:03Yeah, that's not hard, by the way, for us.
32:05We just go...
32:08And Ed, now you know some people on the couch.
32:10I think you know Gordon, right?
32:11Yes.
32:11And I mean, honestly, I spend a lot of time on the computer watching you and your recipes.
32:19I really do.
32:21Do you, too?
32:22No, no, no, no.
32:22Oh.
32:23We're now.
32:25We're the only one, Dave.
32:26He makes an egg, a hot dog, mustard and relish.
32:30Oh, boy.
32:31He does.
32:31You can check out Jennifer's YouTube channel.
32:33She cooks as well.
32:34Are you cooking all the time?
32:36I do like to cook.
32:37It's the best thing.
32:37I love it so much.
32:38It is the best.
32:39You have to feed people.
32:40You have to feed people.
32:41Yeah.
32:41And I know now, I know you are a fan of Benicio because you love the movie.
32:46I mean, I'm trying to be cool right now.
32:48Well, right back, Adam.
32:49He's a legend.
32:49I love it.
32:50I love it.
32:51I mean, it's been a long...
32:52He's made a lot of my favourite movies.
32:55But, I mean, I watched the latest movie, I don't know, three weeks ago or something like
32:59that.
32:59And it's funny because the chemistry that you and Leo had together, that's like Mick and Keith.
33:05You know what I mean?
33:06I mean, that's like the collaboration, that sort of like that connection that you have
33:10with another person when you're making art.
33:12It's...
33:13You don't find it often, but man, that movie is so amazing.
33:17It's so great.
33:18So great.
33:20And...
33:22And I don't have to ask you because I know you are a fan of Charlie XCX.
33:26Oh, yes.
33:27I mean, listen, that music in my house, it's on.
33:30No, you and your daughter, you did the apple dance.
33:33We did.
33:34Oh, cool.
33:35Have you seen this?
33:37I...
33:37You're about to.
33:38I'm about to see it.
33:40Here's Dave and his daughter doing the apple dance.
33:42I think the apple's running right to the corner.
33:47I'm about to see it.
33:49I'm about to see it.
33:51I'm about to see it.
33:55I'm about to see it.
33:57I'm about to see it.
33:57Very good.
33:59These writers don't do a lot of choreography.
34:02We don't.
34:03You're thinking like an abstract approach and that's cool.
34:06Oh, good.
34:06Okay.
34:06Cool.
34:07Yeah.
34:07I mean, that was basically my daughter saying, Dad, do this.
34:11And, yeah.
34:12She's beautiful.
34:13It was very impressive.
34:14She's amazing, yeah.
34:14Now, that song we just heard, Favourite Joy, is off the forthcoming album.
34:20The single is out now.
34:22Yes.
34:23This is out on April 24th, but you can pre-order it now.
34:26Oh.
34:26I believe.
34:27Yeah.
34:28I didn't know that.
34:28Yeah, no, yeah.
34:30And here's the thing, Dave.
34:32You know, because you guys, you've got this incredible back catalogue.
34:35You know, you've got so many hits, you could tour forever with what you've got.
34:39How do you approach a new album?
34:41How do you know it's time?
34:43Or, like, do you just decide, right, new album or are there just songs in your head?
34:48So, like, we've been a band for 30 years now.
34:52Wow.
34:52Right?
34:52And so, we've all grown together and we've all been through life together.
34:59Ups and downs.
34:59And it, honestly, we're, it's, it's more than a musical thing.
35:04At some point you get to a place where it's kind of more than music, you know?
35:08It's our families and it's our friends.
35:10And most of us have, you know, most of the people we work with, it's been 35 years, 30 years.
35:16A lot of the people we work with are from the Nirvana days.
35:20And so, it becomes something that's more than music.
35:22And you just kind of know when it's time.
35:26And so, when we go and approach a new record, it's all determined by where we're at in our lives.
35:32Yeah.
35:33And we're, you know, a bunch of grumpy old men.
35:36And so...
35:37Yeah, but also, you're high energy old men.
35:39Like, these songs are meant to be performed.
35:42Well, you'd imagine that, you'd think that maybe as you get a bit older, that things sort of soften.
35:47More ballads.
35:48It doesn't.
35:49As you get older, you're like...
35:52That's kind of what happens.
35:53So, that's where we're at now.
35:56Yeah.
35:59You can see the Foo Fighters do things like that, because you are on tour.
36:03You're going to Liverpool two nights in June at the Anfield Stadium.
36:10And is the tour, like, is it a global tour and this is your dipping your toe into Britain?
36:14Yeah.
36:14And that's the other great thing about being in the band is that we've been circling the planet for 30
36:17years.
36:18So, there's not too many places we haven't been.
36:21So, when I look at this and I see, like, wait, there's only two shows in the UK?
36:27And they're like, oh, no.
36:29That's...
36:29The real tour is a year and a half from now.
36:32I'm just like, Jesus.
36:36The UK loves rock and roll music.
36:39It just does.
36:40And so, you come out and you bring it and it's like...
36:43It's just like...
36:43Let's go.
36:44Bang a whole field.
36:45Well, we're so glad to have you back.
36:47Good luck with the tour and the album and thank you so much for that amazing performance.
36:52Foo Fighters, everybody!
36:59Right, that is nearly it.
37:00Before we go.
37:01Oh, no, there's a love in.
37:02A love in.
37:03Dave Grohl, there's red wine there.
37:05Be careful.
37:06Sorry.
37:07I'm having a Gordon Ramsay moment.
37:10Right, that's nearly it before we go.
37:12Just time for a quick visit of the big red chair.
37:14Hello.
37:15Hello.
37:16Hi, what's your name?
37:16Abby.
37:17Abby, lovely.
37:18What do you do, Abby?
37:19I'm in medical sales.
37:20In medical sales?
37:21Yeah.
37:22And where are you from?
37:23Originally Scotland but live here in London.
37:27Oh, yeah.
37:28You've got to go specific with the neighbourhood and they thought, no, I won't.
37:30Just London.
37:32Greater London.
37:34Abbey of London.
37:37Off you go with your story.
37:38So, about 20 years ago I was travelling around Thailand as part of my gap year with my sister and
37:45we ended up attending a ping pong show.
37:48Oh, yes.
37:49After a fair few drinks I got talking to one of the performers who suggested I come up on stage
37:54and join in the fun.
37:55Oh, jeez.
37:56So, off I went backstage, got dressed into one of the bikinis, thrust out onto the stage, panic-stricken because
38:03I simply cannot dance.
38:05I noticed...
38:06That's the least of your worries, aren't you, I thought?
38:09I noticed a trumpet in front of me and thought, perfect, this will distract everyone from the fact that I
38:14cannot dance.
38:15Made a beeline for the trumpet.
38:17I noticed my sister in the corner of my eye, flailing her arms above her head, looking very stressed about
38:24something.
38:25I played the trumpet, I had a whale of a time.
38:28It wasn't until I got back into the audience and fully clothed that my sister informed me while I was
38:33backstage,
38:34the performers were actually playing the trumpets, but not with their mouths.
38:42Oh, my God.
38:44Come on.
38:44I see her.
38:47I'm so sorry when he's here, you travelled all this way to hear that story.
38:51That's OK.
38:52On your birthday.
38:52On your birthday.
38:54On your birthday.
38:54And with a jet lag.
39:01You're in rock and roll.
39:03Yeah.
39:03You've heard and seen worse.
39:05Listen, that really is all we've got time for.
