00:09Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 of the toughest levels we've ever
00:15endured in the Star Fox games. Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long,
00:26so be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:33Star Fox Assault is already a bit of a tough game to play with its obtuse level design and controls.
00:47Sauria is a prime example for how flawed this game really is. This mission, in particular,
00:53takes an eternity to get through because of how vast the map is compared to other missions,
00:58and how chaotic things can become in a matter of seconds.
01:07Not only are enemies constantly harassing you left and right, but the awful checkpoint placement will
01:12often cause you to basically start the entire mission over from scratch. Needless to say,
01:17getting the medals for this one was not worth the mental anguish.
01:28Star Fox 64
01:37Aquus is difficult for a very unique reason in that this is the only level in the entire game where
01:43you
01:43get to pilot Star Fox's very own submarine, the Blue Marine. Just like the Land Master,
01:49this vehicle controls very differently from the Arwing, both in movement and in combat. It moves very
01:55slowly through Aquus' waters, and your standard lasers will soon prove to be not all that useful,
02:01since the Blue Marine is incapable of charging shots.
02:12You're best means of defense is to ignore Peppy's advice. Use bombs wisely? Nah, we're using them
02:18without mercy, even on single targets. You have an infinite supply anyways, make the most of it.
02:33Fortuna Star Fox
02:40At first, Fortuna doesn't seem to be that much of a slog to get through. Sure, there aren't a ton
02:46of enemies
02:47firing at you, but many of them, particularly the dragonfly-like enemies, are tough to land shots on. The
02:53difficulty doesn't ramp up until about midway through, when you have serpents in the water blowing massive fireballs at you.
03:06The boss of this level, the monarch Dodora, will also make things tougher than they need to be,
03:11as its weak points are incredibly small. Really, this level is going to cause some players a major headache.
03:25Asteroid Belt, the default route, Star Fox Command
03:37For many Star Fox fans, Command is already a tough game to stomach on account of its intense focus
03:43on all-range combat. The final mission of the default route here is a prime example of how tedious this
03:49format can really get. Many of the enemies you'll encounter hit hard and are hard to hit. The thing
04:00is that they aren't hard to hit because of their speed. No, some of them are hard to hit because
04:05their vulnerable points only open when they're attacking. Looking at you, you nautilus seashell
04:10looking fools. Otherwise, your shots are going to deflect off or just vanish entirely from these guys.
04:16So, know which units are best for regular combat, and which should prioritize going after missiles.
04:23And yes, use bombs wisely.
04:35Sector Z, Star Fox 64
04:44Though it is the quickest level in Star Fox 64, Sector Z is also one that has haunted many players.
04:51For the first minute or two, Sector Z is just another all-range encounter. Fly around and shoot
04:56however many enemies you can. But, about a third of the way through, you will have to face waves of
05:02copperhead missiles heading straight for the Great Fox. The third and final wave is what dictates whether
05:16or not you head for Area 6. First off, if Falco was downed in your previous level, you already have
05:22an
05:22uphill battle. But, if you never went to Zone S to help Cap Monroe and shoot all of the searchlights,
05:28hope you've got enough smart bombs to take down three copperhead missiles by yourself.
05:42Test of Fear
05:44Star Fox Adventures
05:52Star Fox Adventures has become more widely accepted by fans over the years, despite its awful
05:57ending. However, one other portion of the game that no player looks forward to is the Test of Fear,
06:03one of the trials required in obtaining a Krazoa spirit. On paper, this trial sounds simple. Keep the
06:09red line within the green bar to help Fox maintain his sanity. In execution, this can be one of the
06:15most
06:15aggravating moments in Star Fox history, as the position of the red line is constantly fighting
06:20you, and the cutscene gets incredibly distracting. Players have reported having an easier time with
06:33this by muting their TV, but man, what's the point of this minigame if we can't enjoy the cutscene,
06:38let alone hear it.
06:48The Aegis Cam Snatch Missions
06:51Star Fox Guard
07:01For as neat of an idea as Star Fox Guard was,
07:04the Aegis Cam Snatch Missions have left a sour taste in the mouths of just about anybody who played this
07:11spinoff. The gimmick to these missions is that you only get one Aegis Cam to use at the start of
07:16the
07:16mission. Yes, you can move it around, but the constant need to adjust coupled with how big and
07:21elaborate the maps can get makes these missions incredibly frustrating. It doesn't help that some
07:26missions make you go for an extensive period of time in using the one camera before you even get
07:31the chance to acquire a second or third one.
07:46No, this is not a typo. Sector Z does appear in the original Star Fox and it is the hardest
07:58level in
07:58the entire game. Whereas the Nintendo 64 remake had you surviving an ambush and taking down giant missiles,
08:05Sector Z is simply another on-rails level, but with a significant increase in the number of obstacles
08:10and enemies hurtling towards you.
08:20The final section has you flying into an enemy fortress to destroy its core, and this part can
08:26be just as overwhelming with its cramped spaces. You really have to stay on your toes if you hope to
08:31make it to Macbeth.
08:41The Aperoid Homeworld, Star Fox Assault
08:51Yes, Assault makes a second appearance here, and the Aperoid Homeworld is what really kills our drive
08:57in revisiting this game. We understand that the last mission or two of any video game should be a
09:02challenge, yes. The thing is that this ninth mission makes things way more aggravating than it needs to be.
09:16For starters, it's tough to navigate the Aperoid Homeworld in general with its labyrinthian layout.
09:22Second, you're constantly getting bombarded with blue Aperoids, which explode upon death or upon
09:29making contact with Fox. These two issues alone can make the ninth mission go on for way,
09:35way longer than it should, and if you die at any point, whatever progress you made is lost entirely.
09:42Have fun doing the whole process over again!
09:53If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence. Just launched for
09:59purchase at TerribleInfluence.com. Terrible Influence is a satirical board game about the
10:04dark side of fame from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
10:09Boom! I can make an apology video. Oh, you so would! Click on the link in the description to check
10:14out
10:14the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence. And lastly, Area 6, Star Fox 64.
10:23Hey, Einstein! I'm on your side!
10:27Focus behind you! Am I getting blown? Even with the headaches assault can create, Area 6 remains to be
10:34the hardest level in Star Fox history. Venom is tough in the games it appears in, but Area 6 is
10:40the
10:40ultimate test of skill here. Here, you're going against a non-stop assault of enemies of various
10:45kinds on top of heavily equipped starships. If you want to get to Venom, it is crucial that you answer
10:59every single call from Rob 64, maintain the highest power level for your lasers, and make sure Falco,
11:05Peppy, and Slippy are able to join you in time for this mission. You want that 300 hit metal? You
11:12better make sure you check every one of those boxes and keep a few smart bombs in your pocket,
11:17especially for the minefield and quintet of missiles that follow it.
