00:06Welcome to MojoPlays, and I probably shouldn't have eaten a biscuit right before voiceover.
00:10This isn't the first time I've done this.
00:12Today, we're beating a dead horse.
00:14Marvel's Wolverine has had plenty of hate online, but before they start patching out
00:17their mistakes, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring.
00:20These are 15 things wrong with Marvel's Wolverine.
00:23Let's go.
00:24Before we continue, we publish content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:29the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:33Technical jank still sneaks through.
00:40For something this expensive and polished looking, Marvel's Wolverine can occasionally
00:44produce some very cheap-looking moments.
00:46Bodies can float, finishes sometimes connect with absolutely nothing, and certain interactions
00:50only work when Logan stands in exactly the right spot.
00:53All would be forgivable, but we've got 14 more entries, so it's hard to be forgiving.
00:57Traversal can also get awkward enough to make a checkpoint reload feel like the simplest
01:01solution.
01:02None of this completely breaks the game, but it does stand out because Insomniac usually
01:06delivers incredibly clean releases.
01:09The Spider-Man games are some of my favorite PlayStation releases, and watching Wolverine perform
01:13a beautifully animated execution while the corpse levitates nearby is a pretty effective
01:18way to make me want an Xbox.
01:25The upgrade system sounds deeper than it is.
01:31Open up Wolverine's upgrade menus and it looks like Logan is about to become a completely
01:34different beast by the finale.
01:36In reality, the progression is just not that dramatic.
01:39You unlock new techniques and bonuses, but basic attacks remain strong enough that experimenting
01:44rarely feels essential.
01:46Some upgrades are clearly more useful than others, while plenty simply improves something
01:50you already do.
01:51That makes XP and DNA less exciting than they should be.
01:54A great skill tree should make you desperate to test a new toy or new ability.
01:58Here, you can sometimes apply a point just because you have to apply a point.
02:02In other words, cyborg mercenaries, they die just the same.
02:06I'm in.
02:08Stealth barely needs to exist.
02:15Wolverine using stealth makes perfect sense on paper.
02:18He has enhanced senses, decades of combat experience and enough patience to wait in a bush for five
02:23seconds.
02:23The problem is that stealth rarely becomes more than a warm up before the real fighting begins.
02:28You can track enemies, sneak around, perform takedowns, but open combat is usually
02:32faster, louder and more entertaining.
02:34For a stealth fan like myself, this is really disheartening.
02:37Enemy behaviour is predictable and getting spotted rarely feels like a genuine punishment.
02:41In fact, detection can feel like permission to stop pretending.
02:44Logan can sneak around, it just kind of feels pointless after a while and that makes me really sad.
02:56The nightmare doors get old quickly.
02:59What the hell?
03:01If there are forgotten moments inside you, we must ease them into the light.
03:06Let's talk about the nightmare doors because initially they sound like a great side activity.
03:09They explore Logan's memories while giving you combat and traversal challenges away from the
03:13main story. Unfortunately, the idea runs out of surprises really quickly. Only a handful of
03:18challenge types keep returning, including timed movements, survival encounters and enemy takedowns.
03:23Because these doors make up such a large part of the optional content,
03:26that repetition becomes hard to ignore. Wolverine has lived for roughly two centuries, survived wars,
03:32collected enough trauma for several lifetimes. But apparently, his subconscious could only invent
03:36three activities.
03:46Horrific character designs.
03:54I know that character design is subjective, but some of Marvel Wolverine's choices are
03:59genuinely hard to love and even harder to defend. Lady Deathstrike became the biggest talking point,
04:05with her appearance apparently confusing enough people that Insomniac had to clarify she was not
04:10Psylocke. That's probably not the reaction you want for a major character reveal. The wider cast can
04:15also look strangely restrained for an X-Men story filled with characters who usually have distinctive
04:20silhouettes. Nobody needed everyone dressed like comic book convention explosions, but more personality
04:25wouldn't have been terrible.
04:27Do what he says. You're not ready for this.
04:34Let's go.
04:35Boss battles become too familiar.
04:41A giant health bar appears. The boss flashes an attack color. Dodge or parry, land a few hits,
04:47repeat until the health bar gives up. Several fights in Marvel's Wolverine look fantastic,
04:51but mechanically you're going to be doing pretty much this the whole time.
04:54Big enemies are especially guilty of soaking up enormous punishment,
04:58which feels strange when Logan is swinging adamantium claws through them. Wolverine bosses
05:03should force you to use regeneration, movement or abilities in clever ways. Instead, once you
05:09understand the defensive timing, some battles become longer versions of normal encounters.
05:13Spectacular to watch, absolutely, my girlfriend is enthralled, but I think I'd rather just give her
05:17the controller because I'm done.
05:26Different enemies, same basic solution.
05:34In a similar vein as our previous entry, the uniforms change, the weapons change,
05:39the organizations attacking you change, your solution often doesn't. Marvel's Wolverine throws
05:44multiple factions at Logan, but too many enemies eventually fall into familiar categories.
05:49Standard fighters, ranged attackers, armored units, large brutes. That's pretty much it.
05:53There are differences between them, but not always enough to force a meaningful change in strategy.
05:58Before long, another truck full of reinforcements can feel less exciting than exhausting.
06:02It's reminiscent of Final Fantasy random encounters. After a while, I just kind of want to play the story.
06:14The combat starts amazing, then barely evolves.
06:23The opening fights in this game are fantastic. Logan launches across rooms, bodies hit walls,
06:29limbs disappear, and every encounter looks like somebody gave an action director an unlimited fake
06:33blood budget. It was enough that at the start, I thought, what is everyone complaining about?
06:37This rules. The problems arrive later when you realize the combat underneath those animations is
06:43not evolving at the same speed. Shred attacks, leaps, parries, and techniques can solve most
06:48situations without demanding much deeper mastery. After a few hours, Wolverine starts to feel surprisingly
06:54limited. Logan's sensors turn into a glowing GPS.
07:07Redhead. Might be already weed.
07:17Wolverine's enhanced sensors should make tracking somebody feel like detective work. He can follow
07:22sense, hear things ordinary people can't, and hunt targets across huge distances. Instead,
07:27the game often translates that ability into a glowing path telling you exactly where to walk.
07:31There's very little interpretation involved when the answer is painted across the environment.
07:36Insomniac has provided options to reduce some guidance, but critical story tracking still relies on
07:41it. Logan is supposed to be one of Marvel's greatest hunters, but controlling him just feels like
07:45delivering Uber Eats. Beautiful locations you barely get to explore.
08:02Tokyo and Madripo look fantastic, which makes it frustrating when the game refuses to let you
08:07properly wander through them. Step towards an interesting street or side area, and there's often an invisible
08:12wall, a blocked path or obvious funnel pushing Logan back towards the main route. Goddammit,
08:18I hate invisible walls. Be more clever, guys. A linear Wolverine game is not automatically bad,
08:22but these locations constantly tease freedom that they never really provide. Slightly wider spaces could
08:28have made exploration and Logan's tracking abilities more meaningful. Instead, some of the game's best
08:33environments feel like expensive lies. The story can be extremely predictable.
09:01There are strong performances and some excellent Logan moments in this game,
09:06but the larger story can be surprisingly easy to read ahead of time. Familiar mutant themes, obvious
09:12foreshadowing, and characters such as Essex and Trask immediately give long-time X-Men fans a good idea
09:18where certain plot threads are heading. The game also explains things through extra exposition and
09:22flashbacks when the audience has already connected the dots. None of that makes the story terrible,
09:26but it weakens several supposed revelations. It's also just kind of corny. It makes it hard to enjoy
09:32when you're sitting next to someone else. I don't want them to think that I think this is good, you
09:36know?
09:53The third act is where the story starts feeling noticeably messier. Gene,
10:06Phoenix and Logan's relationship are all pushed into increasingly dramatic territory,
10:10but the emotional pieces do not always come together cleanly. The doomed romance angle is
10:15especially difficult because the game piles major character moments, revelations and escalating stakes
10:20into the same stretch. Instead of giving those ideas room to breathe, everything starts competing
10:25for attention. There are still powerful scenes in there, but the finale can feel like several endings
10:30fighting for control at the same time. By the time Phoenix actually enters the equation, yeesh.
10:36And I am going to unlock it. Move! Now! Stay right where you are.
10:50The camera can actively fight the combat.
10:57Parrying only works when you can actually see the attack coming. Crowded encounters can leave enemies
11:03preparing strikes just outside the camera, while targeting sometimes pulls Logan towards somebody you
11:08not trying to fight. That is especially annoying because combat relies heavily on reading visual cues
11:13and reacting correctly. Missing a parry because your timing was bad feels fair, missing one because
11:18the camera decided another wall looked more interesting than the enemy does not. I just never thought that
11:23in 2026 I'd be fighting the camera like a 90s N64 game. The motorcycle chase that basically plays itself.
11:40Yeah, that'll work.
11:45The motorcycle chase looks like it should be one of the game's biggest adrenaline moments. Logan races through
11:51danger, attacks pursuing enemies, and supposedly fights to keep the bike under control. Then players
11:56realize something hilarious. You don't need to participate. The motorcycle can often keep itself
12:01on course, recover from mistakes, and continue even when you stop trying. In some sections, doing less can
12:07actually be safer than driving yourself. That completely deflates the spectacle. A lot of videos online have
12:13gone viral showing players getting through without even touching their control.
12:19Ah, I'm getting closer. Just gotta get up to the truck the mutants are in.
12:23The game just doesn't trust the player.
12:25We gotta get inside that compound.
12:30There, the shore entrance.
12:38This is the issue sitting underneath many of the others. Objective markers tell you where to go,
12:43scent trails draw the route, climbing areas announce themselves, collectibles stand out,
12:48Logan even reminds you what to do if you hesitate too long. None of these systems are disastrous alone,
12:54but together they create a game that seems terrified of letting the player feel lost,
12:59or even uncertain. That is a strange fit for Wolverine. He should feel dangerous, instinctive,
13:05unpredictable. Instead, the adventure wraps him in guidance systems.
13:10What happened after Spider-Man 2 to make Insomniac so scared to leave us uncertain?
