00:00Here's Payne and Pendergast.
00:02All right, Payne and Pendergast with you on a Thursday.
00:08I just learned how to make it rain on my computer.
00:11On the computer.
00:12If you're on a call on an Apple computer, on Zoom or anything else,
00:17and you go two thumbs down for two seconds, it puts a rain cloud over you.
00:21I've never seen that one before.
00:23We get accidental fireworks sometimes because two thumbs up is the fireworks.
00:28We get balloons.
00:29Yes, Seth figured out, Ben, that two fingers gives you the balloons.
00:32The peace sign.
00:33Or victory if you're a World War II veteran.
00:37He's doing the Jeremy Payne heart right now,
00:39and a bunch of Valentines are floating up.
00:41You know what he's doing, Ben, if you can get the hotkey ready?
00:44He's messing with the Zoom is what he's doing right now.
00:47Messing with the Zoom.
00:48Yeah, messing with the Zoom.
00:49That's how you end up.
00:51Well, you know what?
00:51The Zoom draft did yield Jonathan Grenard.
00:55It did.
00:55It did.
00:56Accidentally.
00:57Jonathan Grenard.
00:57But still.
00:58Yes, that's your pick, Jack.
00:59Whatever the disagreement was between O'Brien and Easterby in that moment
01:05where they botched some kind of trade down, I believe the speculation was.
01:08It was a trade with the Lions, yeah.
01:10Because they botched that trade,
01:11and they ended up having to draft Jonathan Grenard,
01:14who would go on to do some damage against the Lions for a couple years eventually
01:19when he would go to the Vikings.
01:20But, yeah, that was a good draft pick.
01:21Good job, Jack Easterby.
01:22Yeah.
01:22By botching the trade back, whatever you did wrong, the Texans ended up accidentally drafting Jonathan Grenard.
01:29Who's still doing it.
01:30They clearly didn't think he was worth it at that pick.
01:32So they wanted to trade back, but it worked out all right.
01:35Still doing it at a high level, man.
01:37Yeah, Jonathan Grenard.
01:37He just got paid by the Eagles last week.
01:39Four years, 100 million bucks, man.
01:41Woo!
01:41Yep.
01:41But D'Amico Ryans, he was at the golf tournament on Monday, the Texans golf tournament,
01:46and he had this to say about the new contract for Aziz Alshire.
01:50For Aziz getting the contract that he got, I'm so proud of him
01:55because I've known Aziz since he was an undrafted rookie.
02:00And I saw the talent.
02:02I saw what he had in him, what he was capable of doing.
02:05But to see someone, right, live out and work at it and really maximize their talents
02:12and see them be rewarded for it is really, you know, it's a special feeling to me
02:16because that's why I got into coaching.
02:19I got into coaching to help young men fulfill their dreams, right, to become that success.
02:24And, again, it's great with the contract, but it's not about the money.
02:28It just shows that, man, if you work at your craft, whatever you do,
02:33if you work at it hard enough, if you put the time and you put the work in,
02:38like, you can become great at your craft and you can be rewarded for those things
02:42where others see the work that you put in.
02:44So I'm happy for Aziz, and he knows it's just the beginning.
02:48Now I can be on him even harder.
02:51When that part, he chuckled after that, but as we learn from Aziz.
02:56He's talking about being on him even harder, yeah,
02:57because Aziz had talked about how, you know, tough it is to play for D'Amico Ryans.
03:00It's a sinister chuckle is what that was.
03:02It's a chuckle where he's twisting his mustache and rubbing his hands like,
03:05nah, now I can coach people.
03:07You belong to me, Aziz.
03:08Young Al Shire.
03:09You're going to go full Sith Lord.
03:11Yes, yes, yeah, you will subscribe to my teachings.
03:16Are there other Sith?
03:17If you are a Sith, are you a Sith Lord, or are there Sids who aren't Sith Lords?
03:21There are Sids who aren't Sith Lords.
03:22The Sith come in pairs.
03:24So, yeah, they...
03:25Like a Sith Lord is like...
03:27Has an apprentice.
03:28...oversees a lot of these other pairs?
03:29Yeah, I guess.
03:30Yes, I don't have the whole org chart in front of me with the Siths.
03:33Yeah.
03:34There's only a couple that I'm familiar with, but yeah.
03:36If it's anything like Mafia families, it's...
03:38They've got a twisted sense of morality, and it doesn't...
03:43Don't be too beholden to that organizational chart.
03:47No, no, no.
03:48But they do have a code.
03:49They do have a code, but death is very prevalent on that tree, much like the Sith.
03:56So, D'Amico kind of chuckled about that at the end, about, hey, we got all this money,
04:01and now I coach him even harder now.
04:02That's no joke, man.
04:04Aziz, I interviewed Aziz Al Shire last Thursday, and the day he signed his contract, and he talked
04:10about how demanding D'Amico Ryans is on him.
04:14When I first talked to him, I was actually on the phone, like when I was agreeing to
04:19come to San Francisco, and I'm sitting there mad, I'm upset, and then he's talking to me,
04:23he's congratulating me, and I'm like, man, nah, y'all got me messed up, man.
04:28I'm going to show you guys, man.
04:30I'm going to show...
04:30Like, and he's like on the phone, you know, I couldn't imagine it, like, what he must
04:35have felt like listening to me on the phone, talking about, nah, I'm going to show you
04:38guys, like, like, uh...
04:40He was excited.
04:41You're an undrafted free agent.
04:42Exactly, like, you know, he's like, okay, man, that's what's up.
04:45Like, I just remember it being so awkward.
04:47Like, I probably assumed it awkward for him, and me, I'm just so angry, like, and ready
04:52to prove myself, and then actually getting in the building and working with him every
04:57day, man, he was extremely tough, extremely tough, extremely detailed, but again, I think
05:03the biggest thing is, is like, you know, he's, he was a linebacker coach for, what, three
05:08years, maybe, one year prior to that, and then two years with me, and he moved up the
05:13ladder extremely fast, but he moved up the ladder through the work.
05:16You know, there's a lot of guys who he's coached, and there's guys who've had success,
05:20and there's a lot of guys who haven't, and what's the difference?
05:22It's the guys who put the work in, and trusted in the coaching, and did the work, like,
05:27I had to do a lot of work to get here, you know, he, he helped me tremendously be where
05:30I'm at today, just from the guidance, and just pure helping me understand, you know,
05:36the details of playing linebacker, the urgency of playing linebacker, but 100%, like, I had
05:42to put the work in to get that, and so I think that combination of, you know, teacher and
05:47student is what brings us, you know, where we are here today, and that's what I'm grateful
05:52for him for.
05:53So he mentions how hard he was on him.
05:54Now, later in the interview, he would mention, like, how, as Aziz progressed as a player,
05:59he expects him to make every play out there.
06:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:02You know, like, he's...
06:02Well, let me ask you about that clip there, too, because, you know, he talks about when
06:07he was signing with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie free agent.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Was it, was he upset because he thought the 49ers were going to draft him, so he's upset
06:16that they didn't draft him?
06:17He, I think he was upset.
06:18The sense I got, and I, because I didn't do a follow-up, the sense I got was he was
06:22upset he just didn't get drafted.
06:23Just didn't get drafted at all.
06:25Yeah, yeah.
06:25He was...
06:26Well, I remember John Lynch and the other, the personnel guy had argued about whether or
06:29not, you know, he would get drafted.
06:32It was Chris Kiffin, who was a coach at FAU, where Aziz was, and I think he was with the
06:39Niners at that point, Kiffin was.
06:41And yeah, Lynch had a bet with Kiffin about Aziz making the team, and Lynch had no.
06:46The GM had no in the bet, and to this day, Aziz tells that story, he's still, John Lynch
06:52still owes Chris Kiffin $1,000.
06:54Yeah.
06:55And yeah, but Chris Kiffin, son of Monty Kiffin, legendary defensive coordinator with
06:59the Bucs there in Tampa.
07:01So yeah, like the Kiffin family loved Aziz from the time he was in high school.
07:04Yeah, Lane was the head coach at FAU.
07:06Yeah, yeah.
07:07When Aziz was there.
07:08So yeah, that was, it's funny, because I think Aziz is definitely one of those guys
07:14where you see him, it's almost, it's an angry young man football player, where they've just
07:19got, they've got so much, like, good, raw aggression.
07:23And as a coach, sometimes your job is, all right, how do I keep this guy, you know, use
07:28all of his dark force qualities for good instead of going to the dark side?
07:34And it is, it's like a young Anakin Skywalker.
07:36It is.
07:36It didn't go one way or the other, you know?
07:37And Aziz.
07:39Aziz managed to keep clear of killing all the younglings.
07:42He did.
07:42And he went on to the, and he saw the light.
07:45He did, he did.
07:46And he killed the evil Trevor Lawrence for an afternoon.
07:48That's right.
07:49Right?
07:50He did good.
07:51Yeah.
07:51Yeah.
07:52He did good.
07:52They say the devil comes to skies.
07:54Trevor Lawrence does look a little like a blonde-haired Kylo Ren.
07:57I will say that.
07:58Adam Driver, the actor, that's one of the newer Star Wars movies.
08:02No, I know who Adam Driver is, and I'm trying to figure out.
08:05Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo.
08:07I know, I know, and I know, I know Adam Driver.
08:09Yeah.
08:10I just, yeah, I'm trying to, but I never in a world would have thought I'd make that comparison.
08:14I can't get past the ears there with, yeah, with Driver.
08:18They both have big schnoz's.
08:19With Adam Driver.
08:20They have big schnoz's and long hair.
08:21Does Trevor Lawrence have a big nose?
08:23Yes.
08:24Really?
08:24Yes, he does.
08:25I think he does.
08:26I think, Ben, does Trevor Lawrence have a big nose?
08:28Break the tie here.
08:30Yes.
08:31Yeah.
08:31He does.
08:32Oh, okay.
08:32He's got a big nose.
08:33Yeah.
08:34Yeah.
08:34He's just, he's an odd-looking guy.
08:36So is Adam Driver.
08:38He's a, like, Trevor Lawrence is one of those guys where you think, you're like, wait, is
08:42this, is this guy good-looking, or is he actually subhuman?
08:46Yeah.
08:46I can't figure it out.
08:47Yeah.
08:47It's one of the two.
08:48Right.
08:48So he's probably really appealing to one group of girls.
08:51Yeah, there's a niche.
08:51These girls like the look of Trevor Lawrence.
08:54Yeah.
08:54Yeah.
08:55They like Adam Driver, too, from what I've learned.
08:57Jesse Watt, big Adam Driver fan.
08:59Well, with Adam Driver, it's the whole, yeah, he's just such a great actor.
09:02He's a good actor.
09:03Whatever the force of his charisma and everything makes him better looking than whatever the
09:07conventional standards might be.
09:08There you go.
09:09There you go.
