JP, BMitch, and some callers debate what the Commanders biggest remaining need is this offseason.
Transcript
00:00There is so much conversation around the receiver position.
00:04Yeah.
00:05And perhaps that's warranted.
00:07There is no receiver you point to right now and say,
00:13that's the number two guy.
00:15Terry's the one, that's the two.
00:17That doesn't mean somebody won't emerge.
00:19True.
00:20But right now, last year when they traded for Debo,
00:23okay, Terry's the one, Debo's the two.
00:25You could identify that.
00:26Yeah.
00:27You cannot identify that now.
00:30You can't?
00:31Nope.
00:32But that said, listen, the draft is over.
00:37Free agency is largely over.
00:39That is a large airplane right there.
00:42This is pretty much what this roster is going to look like.
00:45Maybe they'll add Iyuk.
00:46Maybe they'll add Trayvon Diggs.
00:48I don't expect that.
00:50They may be.
00:51Stephon.
00:51Well, I'm saying Trayvon is a corner, but or Stephon.
00:53But maybe they will add somebody else,
00:55but the odds of it aren't that significant.
00:57You do still have post-June 1 cuts.
00:59There will be maybe some player trades.
01:01There will be some action maybe around training camp.
01:04But by and large, this is what your roster is going to be.
01:08Knowing that, what do you think their biggest need is?
01:12At this point?
01:13Yeah.
01:18And I want to open the phones up on this, too.
01:20Hey, see, this is the thing, Jay.
01:23I don't know if it's the biggest need as much as it is improvement at a position.
01:30I believe they have enough at the cornerback position.
01:33I believe there's enough at the safety position at this point now, since Nick Cross was signed.
01:41Linebackers, they have that.
01:43They have people now can rush and all that.
01:45I just think that you've improved yourself, but you're not where you want to be.
01:51So, I don't know if it's a need at this point.
01:54I think you want to get better every time you get a chance, but you can't get it all done
01:59in one year.
02:02800-636-1067.
02:04800-636-1067.
02:07What do you think Washington's biggest...
02:09You're right about need, because we're past need season.
02:12This is pretty much what it's going to be.
02:14But where do you think maybe the biggest hole is, the biggest question mark, however you want to phrase it,
02:19on this roster?
02:20I think a lot of people are going to...
02:22What does Jimbo say?
02:23Where do you think the biggest hole is on this roster?
02:25You can text me.
02:26I don't know if we have a mic for you.
02:28I know how this dude studies for the draft.
02:30He's aware of this roster.
02:32For me, people are going to point to the receiver position.
02:36We'll open the phones, and people, you want to call in and say, sign IUC, sign Diggs, fire away.
02:40Tell us your reasoning.
02:44Jimbo just said safety.
02:45I really like Nick Cross.
02:47I think Nick Cross helps this team.
02:50I wonder about the corners.
02:53The corners are my biggest question mark.
02:55And I think this defense, this system, if you look at Robert Flores over time, and now you look at
03:02what they did this year,
03:05I think they've kind of changed this thing.
03:08In no sense does anybody devalue the cornerback position.
03:14But I think their philosophy is we're going to generate enough pressure that the guys we have will be able
03:20to hold up.
03:21And that's a...
03:24To me, that's not necessarily a gutsy proposition, but it is a theory that...
03:30But like I've always felt, when you're a defense, you have to speed up the process for a quarterback.
03:37We didn't do that a lot the last two years.
03:41If you're blitzing, the quarterback has to make a decision quickly and let it fly.
03:45Sure.
03:45I believe Trey Amos was playing very good football.
03:48Amos was good.
03:49I think Mikey, by moving inside, kind of took a step back.
03:54But as you look at the overall year, he played better than most people give him credit for.
03:58He has tools, right?
04:01Like, Mikey is a ball hawk.
04:05I mean, even if you think he played poorly last year, whatever it is, he still led the team in
04:10interceptions, I believe.
04:12So, you don't not want Samer still on the field, but you need him playing better on the field.
04:17Yeah.
04:19Here's my real issue.
04:20I'm not even talking...
04:23Let's suggest you and I agree that we think Mikey's situated for a better year.
04:27More pass rush, maybe playing more on the boundary, gives him a little more help.
04:32I worry about the depth.
04:34And corner's a position where a lot of guys are going to play.
04:38Like, if things go well on your offensive line, five guys play all year.
04:42That's not going to happen, but that's the theory.
04:45Corner, five corners play per game.
04:48And you've got Amos, Mikey, they added Amik Robertson, who there's, you know, real excitement about.
04:55But, B, after that, you're talking Darius Rush, Carlin Viggers, another free agent they signed was the kid Witherspoon.
05:03But the depth at the corner position, if we're just talking depth, that to me is by far the biggest
05:09question.
05:11Metal says we've got a caller on line one.
05:13What do you got, sir?
05:14What's the biggest need?
05:15What's the biggest question mark for these commanders?
05:20Hello.
05:21Yo, you there?
05:21Hello.
05:22You talking to Nick?
05:23What's up, Nick?
05:24Hey, man.
05:26Good to talk to you all.
05:27Listen, cornerback.
05:30We really need a shutdown corner.
05:32I know that's real hard to do, but I'm talking cornerback.
05:36We got Dallas.
05:37We got Philly with the new wide receiver.
05:40We need a cornerback, a shutdown corner.
05:43If we had to trade a pick for next year to do it, I would joke on it.
05:47I don't think, you know, like the best receivers don't get the free agency.
05:52The best corners don't really get traded.
05:55Like, I don't think if you called, you know, Denver about Patrick Sertan, like he's available.
06:02I don't expect them.
06:05I think there's some.
06:06You're not going to find someone that is considered the best cornerback in the league at this point.
06:12No.
06:13Let me ask you something.
06:15Yeah.
06:15What do you think about this semi-pro league?
06:18Well, the pro league we got playing the Washington team.
06:20Are we going to be taking players from those teams, offensive linemen, you know, guys that stand out?
06:26Is that like baseball?
06:27Are we allowed to take those guys?
06:30No.
06:30Hang on.
06:30It's not the same.
06:32It's not like it's a farm team.
06:34Thank you, Nick.
06:34Washington team has no affiliation with the NFL.
06:37No.
06:37Thank you, Nick.
06:38And I think even greater than that, there is some deal with the – I think the NFL and the
06:44NFL have a deal that they can scout guys or whatever, but it happens later.
06:49Like, I don't think it happens right now.
06:50Yeah.
06:51I want to – we got another call here.
06:53My guy, Will, is in Clinton on line two.
06:55Will, what do you think the biggest need is, dude?
06:58Oh, man.
06:59Without a doubt, it's cornerback.
07:00The cornerback position.
07:02And because – I got a question for a matter of fact.
07:04Because we upgraded the D end so much as far as the rush end, would you consider bringing back Lattimore
07:11at a cheaper price?
07:13Because if you think about Lattimore, he was often in position to make a play.
07:18He was often in position to make a play, but because we had no pressure, it made him look that
07:24much worse.
07:26Well, I think he was already Sloan and he had an injury last year.
07:30No, I don't think you would try to bring him back.
07:32Yeah, that's a no, dude, for me.
07:34I don't – I appreciate the question.
07:36I think the fact that you've improved all the things you stated will help your cornerback situation out right now.
07:43Nothing's going to help more than –
07:45Yeah.
07:46Would you bring someone new in, though?
07:48I think what they went out and got is what we're going to have.
07:53I know we always have the mindset that we've got to get somebody better, but we're not going to get
07:58some fantastic player right now.
08:01No.
08:01They're not free.
08:03They're not walking around.
08:04They're already secure with someone.
08:06And what do we have to try and trade for to try to go get someone?
08:10What about the guy Diggs, the guy Diggs that plays for Green Bay, the Dallas Cuts?
08:14I mean, that's a possibility, but, you know –
08:17I think there's a much greater possibility of Steph Diggs than Trayvon Diggs.
08:22Yeah.
08:22I think Trayvon's going to have opportunities to go other places, too.
08:25But the whole thing is –
08:27Although Trayvon Diggs did play for Dan Quinn.
08:29Yeah.
08:30But Trayvon was great.
08:32Yeah.
08:32Three years ago.
08:33And there's one more guy.
08:35It's got Sneed.
08:37Yeah, LeJarrius Sneed.
08:38I think he's 34.
08:40He's a free agent.
08:41I'm sorry.
08:41He's only 30.
08:45Listen, I don't know, and I appreciate the call, man.
08:49I don't think – like, if there was somebody they wanted to bring in, I kind of think they would
08:53have.
08:54Yeah, they would have done it by now.
08:55But I just think that –
08:56Trayvon Diggs was a fantastic player early in his career with Buffalo and dealt with a bunch of injuries.
09:00I believe the cornerback position is a direct impact of your pass rush.
09:07And I believe the guys that are on the team right now will be playing a lot better than they
09:12played last year if the pass rush improves.
09:17In the last three seasons – so, Steph Diggs had a pro bowl – had back-to-back all-pro
09:22seasons.
09:22In 2021, he had 11 picks, which is outrageous.
09:25Trayvon.
09:26Trayvon, yeah.
09:27In 2021, he had 11 picks, which is just banana land.
09:30The following year, he's a pro bowl player.
09:32Since the 23 season, he hasn't played more than 11 games in a year.
09:3723, he had the big knee injury early, only played two games that year.
09:40The following year, he played 11.
09:42And then last season, between two different teams, Dallas and Green Bay, he played nine.
09:47So, I think there's some reality there.
09:50I also think when you get to the level of veteran, a guy like Marshawn Lattimore or Jimmy Ward, like,
09:58some of these dudes probably don't want – now, maybe they just will take the contract when they can get
10:01the contract, but they might not mind waiting until mid-August.
10:08You know what I mean?
10:09Yeah.
10:09Some teams are going to have corner injuries.
10:11They're going to get a call.
10:13But listen, I have to say this, and I want all of our fans, if you're listening, let's stop thinking
10:21that we always have to just go sign somebody who played great some particular year for a team,
10:29and they're going to just walk in and erase everything that we have, every problem we have, if that person
10:34is not on the team right now, it's for a reason, too.
10:38Right.
10:38So, the ultimate thing is, how about allowing the people on your roster to at least have a chance to
10:45grow?
10:45We brought some people on the roster now.
10:47We're not giving them a chance.
10:49I believe Trey Amos was playing damn good ball before he got hurt.
10:53He can be as good or better this year.
10:57Let's give people a chance.
10:58It's always thinking that we've got to always run and grab what was very good on the team some years
11:04before.
11:04Because if they're not that good anymore on that team, and they come to yours, they may not be that
11:09good again.
