00:05From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Maya Rudolph.
00:14From Daredevil Born Again, actor Michael Gandolfini.
00:18An all-new closer look.
00:25And now, Seth Meyers.
00:28Good evening, I'm Seth Meyers.
00:30It's Late Night.
00:31We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34The U.S. and Iran are reportedly close to negotiating a one-page deal to end the war.
00:40Okay, but still not short enough for this guy to read it.
00:43He's never even finished a haiku.
00:48President Trump hosted a Mother's Day event today at the White House.
00:51Of course, Mother's Day isn't until Sunday, but obviously he's golfing that day.
00:56During a Military Mother's Day event today, President Trump claimed that the autocorrect
01:00feature on his phone used to change First Lady Melania Trump's name to Melanie until
01:05he had the Pentagon fix it.
01:07You went to the Pentagon for this?
01:10No wonder we're still at war.
01:12Everyone, stop what you're doing.
01:14I can't turn off the flashlight feature.
01:18During an Oval Office signing ceremony yesterday with a group of schoolchildren,
01:21President Trump spoke about the Iranian regime killing protesters.
01:25Well, way to freak out the kids, as if they weren't already going to have nightmares.
01:32President Trump signed a proclamation yesterday restoring the presidential fitness test.
01:37And I don't know what the test entails, but count me out.
01:40All right, kid, put on your tightest jeans.
01:45And meet me out of the elliptical.
01:49President Trump said on Monday that he originally asked for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
01:53to have a new lining that's the same color as his pools in Florida.
01:57But the contractor said, quote,
01:59This isn't Florida, sir, which is a valid response to most of the things he does.
02:06When asked yesterday during a press briefing, excuse me, what his DJ name is,
02:12Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, quote,
02:14You're not ready for my DJ name.
02:16Well, based on how lame you are, I'm going to guess DJ Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
02:24Today was School Nurse Day.
02:26Celebrate by letting a nerd hide in your office.
02:34You know, Jenny wrote that.
02:36And it really, like, people reacted to it like it was a Mike Scollins joke,
02:40but a rare chiller from our writer Jenny Hagel.
02:46A man in England recently became the first person in the world
02:49to pull a car with his penis while on fire.
02:54So at least someone will finally have a good Jeopardy anecdote.
03:01That's right, a man in England recently pulled a car with his penis
03:04more than 131 feet while on fire.
03:06Let that be a lesson to everybody.
03:09Always renew your AAA membership.
03:14That's right, a man in England.
03:15So we're going to do three.
03:20It was very exciting news, yeah.
03:26When comedy writers see news like this, they're like, thank you.
03:31A man in, that's right, that's right.
03:34A man in England recently became the first person in the world
03:37to pull a car with his penis while on fire
03:40to raise awareness for prostate cancer
03:42and inadvertently penis reattachment surgery.
03:49By the way, I love that we buried it until the third joke
03:53that it was for charity.
03:57This poor guy would just make him sound like a lunatic
03:59who's doing it for fun.
04:02Although, is that really raising awareness?
04:05Like, you know, I didn't know anything about prostate cancer
04:07until I saw a dude on fire pulling a car with his.
04:11I was like, what's this about?
04:13He's like, get checked!
04:17And finally, according to the latest numbers,
04:20the average price of a gallon of gas
04:21has surpassed $4.50.
04:24At this point, it's actually cheaper
04:26to pull your car with your penis
04:28while you're on fire.
04:30That was the monologue, everybody.
04:32Four. The rule of four.
04:34Got a great show for you tonight.
04:36You know her from SNL,
04:38Loot and Bridesmaids.
04:39She's making her Broadway debut.
04:41Is Mary Todd Lincoln in O'Meara
04:43playing an awful lot of team theater?
04:45One of the best ever ones ever.
04:47Maya Rudolph is on the show, everybody.
04:49Oh, my God.
04:51New York City.
04:52New York City is abuzz.
04:54It's abuzz with the fact that Maya
04:56is playing Mary on Broadway.
04:58You know him from the many saints of Newark.
05:01And shows such as The Deuce and The Offer,
05:03he's currently starring in Daredevil,
05:05Born Again, which is streaming now on Disney+.
05:07Michael Gandolfini is back on the show.
05:09You're all excited to see Michael.
05:10Am I?
05:12Before we get to all that,
05:14the Trump administration is now arguing
05:17that the war with Iran is over
05:19because it has a new name.
05:20But it might start again
05:22if Iran doesn't agree
05:23to what it's already agreed to,
05:25and the goal is to open the Strait of Hormuz,
05:27which was already open before the war started.
05:29For more on this,
05:30it's time for A Closer Look.
05:35From day one,
05:37almost everything about this war
05:38has been confusing and unclear.
05:39What are the objectives?
05:40How long will it take?
05:41Which country are we bombing?
05:43He has the ability to come back
05:45and declare war
05:46and ask for Congress to declare war on Iraq.
05:49Ooh!
05:50So close.
05:53So you were off by just one letter.
05:56Terrifying time to have a name
05:57one letter away from Iran.
05:59If you're watching this
06:00and your name is Ira,
06:01you better watch the out.
06:02Yeah, yeah, I've been guilty
06:04of some nuclear frusion
06:06in the bedroom.
06:08Stop by if you ever want
06:10to enrich some uranium.
06:12Not that I want to be too hard
06:13on Mark Wayne Mullen
06:14for being one letter off,
06:15I've made that mistake many times.
06:17My wife's name is Alexi,
06:18and I can't tell you
06:19the number of times
06:19I've gotten in a fight with Alexa.
06:22It's gotten so bad
06:23that now my Alexa and I
06:24are in couples therapy.
06:27I just feel like
06:27we don't communicate anymore.
06:28I try to connect with you,
06:30but you don't listen.
06:31Mm-hmm.
06:33Alexa, would you like
06:34to respond to that?
06:35I'm sorry.
06:36I'm having trouble understanding.
06:38Please try again.
06:39The point is,
06:40everything about this war
06:41has been unclear,
06:41except for one thing
06:42that everyone can agree on.
06:43It is not a war.
06:45I wouldn't call this a war
06:46as much as I'd call it a conflict.
06:48Strategic strikes are not war.
06:50We are not at war.
06:51We have no intention
06:51of being at war.
06:52Nobody should classify this as war.
06:54It is combat operations.
06:55This isn't a war.
06:56I don't know
06:57if this is technically a war.
06:58So we are still at war with Iran.
07:03You know, I don't know
07:05what the definition of war is.
07:06Oh.
07:07Well, you're in luck, my man.
07:09I got it right here.
07:11Ahem.
07:13It's a small, benign growth
07:15on the skin or mucus membrane.
07:17Wait, my bad.
07:18That's wart.
07:18That's wart.
07:19Man, being one letter off
07:21really does make a difference.
07:23Here we go.
07:24It's a state of armed conflict
07:25between nations characterized
07:27by military operations.
07:29See?
07:29I don't need you, Alexa.
07:31He does one thing for himself
07:33and now he wants a parade.
07:35See, Dr. Henderson,
07:36this is the sort of hurtful language
07:38I've been talking about.
07:39Oh, grow the up.
07:40I already have three kids.
07:42I don't need a fourth.
07:44So Republicans are desperate
07:45to avoid calling the war
07:46with Iran a war.
07:47And as much as I'd love
07:48to prove them wrong,
07:49there is just no evidence
07:50that we are, in fact,
07:51in a war.
07:52We're in a war.
07:54Damn it!
07:56Come on, you guys.
07:57You've got to tell me
07:58in rehearsal
07:58if I'm sarcastically
08:00setting up a clip
08:01that's going to prove
08:01the opposite of what I'm saying.
08:03What's that?
08:03There is no rehearsal?
08:05Then what have I been going to?
08:07Schmigadoon?
08:08All right.
08:10So I guess that means
08:10I won't have a song today.
08:13So Donald Trump called it
08:14a war one time.
08:15One time.
08:16It's a slip of the tongue,
08:17you monsters.
08:19Have you never said
08:20the wrong word one time?
08:24One time by,
08:25oh, there's a whole clip package?
08:26Well, just show it.
08:27The stock market just now
08:29hit a new high
08:31during the war.
08:33During a war,
08:34we have the highest stock market.
08:36During a, you know, a war.
08:38During a war,
08:38we have the highest stock market.
08:40We have unlimited
08:41middle and upper ammunition,
08:43which is really
08:44what we're using in this war.
08:45We may have casualties
08:48that often happens in war.
08:50It's a war?
08:51The war with Iran.
08:53We have a war right now.
08:55We've totally won the war.
08:56I will say the war in Iran
08:58is going along swimmingly.
09:00Now, for the first time,
09:01I think it might not be a war
09:02because wars don't go swimmingly.
09:04That's not how you describe a war.
09:06That's how you describe
09:07a garden party in the Cotswolds.
09:09You know, you just can't picture
09:10General George S. Patton saying,
09:12better put on your Speedos, boys,
09:13because this war is going swimmingly.
09:17But at some point,
09:18someone must have whispered
09:20in Trump's ear
09:20to stop calling the war.
09:22He started without approval
09:23from Congress a war
09:24because that would be illegal.
09:25So we started using
09:26some other dumber euphemisms.
09:29I saw what was happening in Iran,
09:31and I said,
09:32I hate to make this excursion.
09:34I had to take an excursion.
09:35This was an excursion.
09:37We took a little bit of a journey,
09:39a little bit of an excursion.
09:41I said,
09:42Susie, do you mind
09:42if I take a little excursion here?
09:44I didn't want to make
09:45that little journey to Iran.
09:47That was a journey.
09:48We have to make a journey
09:49down to Iran.
09:50We have to take
09:51a little journey
09:52down to a beautiful country
09:54known as Iran.
09:55We had to do a little
09:57journey down to Iran.
09:59We did an excursion.
10:00You know what an excursion is?
10:01We had to take a little trip.
10:03We all know
10:04what an excursion is.
10:06Stop being dumb
10:07and also acting
10:08like you're a professor.
10:09Your vocabulary
10:11is only complicated to you.
10:13It's not like
10:14you're up there
10:15using obscure language.
10:16We're going to break through
10:17the Strait of Hormuz
10:18like a bodkin.
10:19A bodkin,
10:20for those who don't know,
10:21it's a sharp, slender instrument
10:23for making holes in cloth.
10:24So now,
10:26we've all learned
10:27a new word
10:27thanks to me.
10:29Also,
10:29can we go back to this?
10:30We had to do
10:31a little journey
10:33down to Iran.
10:34Oh, you went down
10:35to Iran?
10:37Were they happy
10:37to see, y'all?
10:40Does he think Iran
10:41is south of the U.S.?
10:42I just don't think
10:43of it as south
10:44because, you know,
10:44it's literally called
10:45the Middle East.
10:47So Trump called it a war,
10:48but then he stopped
10:49calling it a war
10:49when someone told him
10:50if it's a war,
10:51it's illegal,
10:52but sometimes he gets
10:53tripped up by his own bull.
10:54Here are three moments,
10:55only minutes apart.
10:57I don't call it a war.
10:58Despite the fact
10:59that we are in
11:00what some people
11:00would call a war,
11:01the gas will go down.
11:03As soon as the war's over,
11:04it'll drop like a rock.
11:05Is it possible
11:06your brain dropped
11:07like a rock
11:08while you were talking?
11:09Like, it shook loose
11:10from the brainstem
11:11and then just fell
11:12down your neck
11:12and into your belly
11:13like a stone
11:14falling into a well?
11:15Actually, you know what?
11:16If you listen back,
11:17I think you can actually
11:18hear that happening.
11:18I don't call it a war.
11:19Despite the fact
11:20that we are in
11:21what some people
11:22would call a war,
11:22the gas will go down.
11:24As soon as the war's over,
11:25it'll drop like a rock.
11:27And then a few days ago,
11:29Trump just gave
11:30the whole game away.
11:31If it's a war,
11:32it's illegal
11:32because he didn't get
11:33permission from Congress
11:34so he just
11:35doesn't call it a war.
11:36You know,
11:37they don't like
11:37the word war
11:38and they call it
11:39a military operation
11:41because that way
11:42you don't have a war,
11:43you don't have
11:44legal problems.
11:45You don't not
11:46break the law
11:47if you use
11:48different words
11:49for the illegal act.
11:51You can put
11:51the cuffs away, officer.
11:53My grandma
11:53wasn't murdered.
11:54She's just sleeping
11:55in a backyard dirt hole.
11:58In fact,
11:59we've now
12:00passed 60 days
12:01since the start
12:02of the war
12:02and that's
12:03the deadline
12:03by which Trump
12:04is required
12:04to ask Congress
12:05for permission,
12:06which is why
12:07he's not calling it a war.
12:08But if it's not a war,
12:09then how do you explain this?
12:11We begin with the U.S. and Iran
12:13exchanging fire
12:14in the Strait of Hormuz.
12:15U.S. Central Command
12:16says that Tehran
12:17launched multiple cruise missiles,
12:18drones,
12:19and small boats.
12:20The U.S. says
12:21it's blown up
12:21at least six
12:22of those Iranian small boats.
12:24Well, this sounds like
12:25the worst
12:25journey I've ever been on
12:27and that includes
12:28last week
12:28when I was on
12:29a Spirit Airlines flight
12:30while Spirit shut down.
12:32The pilot got on the P.A.
12:34said,
12:34peace out, bitches,
12:35and grabbed a parachute.
12:39So, if we're firing shots
12:40at each other
12:41but it's not a war,
12:43then what is it?
12:44Our country's booming now
12:46despite the fact
12:46that we're in a,
12:47I call it a mini-war.
12:49Aw.
12:52Aw, well, that's fun.
12:54It's a little mini-war.
12:56It can't be illegal
12:56if it's just a little old thing.
12:58I call it World War 0.003.
13:01It's just a little,
13:03my beautiful little war.
13:06Now, of course,
13:06there's no such thing
13:07as a mini-war,
13:08so now they're trying
13:09a new thing.
13:09The war can't be illegal
13:10because the war
13:11has a new name.
13:13Yesterday,
13:13Secretary of State
13:14Marco Rubio
13:14declared an end
13:15to Operation Epic Fury,
13:17saying that the U.S.
13:18has achieved
13:18its objectives.
13:20President Trump
13:20says the U.S.
13:21will begin escorting
13:22neutral ships
13:22through the Strait of Hormuz
13:24as soon as this morning.
13:26President calling
13:26the plan Project Freedom.
13:28That's right.
13:29They're going from
13:29Operation Epic Fury
13:30to Project Freedom.
13:31They're just renaming it.
13:32They're treating the war
13:33like it's HBO.
13:34They went from HBO
13:34to HBO Go
13:35to HBO Now
13:36to HBO Max
13:37to Max
13:38back to HBO Max.
13:39Although, if you ask me,
13:40a much simpler name
13:40would just be the one
13:42that has Game of Thrones.
13:44But before you get used
13:45to Project Freedom,
13:46just FYI,
13:47Trump has already
13:49paused it.
13:49So, bad news
13:50for your MAGA-loving
13:52aunt who always buys
13:53the merch on day one
13:54and good news
13:55for your woke nephew
13:56who loves giving her
13:57Oh, cool shirt,
13:58Aunt Jean.
13:59Shame that's already
13:59not a thing.
14:00you.
14:01You're not my blood.
14:02So, they've gone
14:03from claiming
14:04there is no war
14:05to it is a war
14:06to it's a mini war
14:07to the war is over.
14:08But now there's
14:09a new wrinkle.
14:10The war might start again
14:11if Iran doesn't agree
14:13to a deal.
14:14President Trump
14:14posted just moments ago
14:17seeming to reference
14:18a potential deal.
14:19This is what he wrote.
14:20Quote,
14:21Assuming that Iran
14:22agrees to give
14:23what has been agreed to,
14:25which is perhaps
14:26a big assumption,
14:28the already legendary
14:29epic fury
14:30will be at an end
14:31and the highly effective
14:32blockade
14:33will allow the Hormuz
14:34Strait to be open
14:35to all,
14:35including Iran.
14:37If they don't agree,
14:38the bombing starts
14:39and it will be sadly
14:40at a much higher level
14:42and intensity
14:43than it was before.
14:45Assuming Iran agrees
14:47to what has been agreed to,
14:48which is perhaps
14:49a big assumption.
14:51I mean, personally,
14:52I think the bigger assumption
14:52is assuming you know
14:54how your sentences
14:54are going to end
14:55when you start writing them.
14:57Like, do you think Iran
14:58knows what the
14:59you're talking about?
15:00How can you expect
15:01to get an outcome
15:01when no one knows
15:02what outcome you want?
15:03You're like a mugger
15:04who says,
15:04give me all your money,
15:05but keep your wallet
15:06because I already have a wallet,
15:07which is full of money,
15:08so I don't need yours,
15:09but I'm still going to stick you
15:10with my bodkin.
15:10A bodkin can also be
15:12a thin blade
15:13that's easily concealed,
15:14so we're learning
15:15a lot of new words today.
15:17Trump can't hold
15:18one position for even a day.
15:19Just take this comment
15:20a few days ago
15:21when he addressed reporters
15:22on a possible deal with Iran.
15:24They told me about
15:25the concept of the deal.
15:26They're going to give me
15:27the exact wording now.
15:29Last night,
15:29you said we might be
15:30better off not making
15:31a deal with Iran.
15:32No, I wouldn't have to.
15:34I didn't say that.
15:35And now,
15:36let me take you
15:37on a little journey
15:38or perhaps an excursion
15:40to one day earlier
15:41when he said
15:42the exact same thing
15:43he denied saying.
15:44I'm so busy
15:45with the Iranians calling,
15:47trying to make a good deal,
15:48and we're not going
15:49to let that happen,
15:50but got to make a bad deal.
15:51They've got to make a bad deal,
15:53but if they make a deal at all,
15:54because frankly,
15:55maybe we're better off
15:56not making a deal at all.
15:57Do you want to know the truth?
15:58Because we can't
15:58let this thing go on.
16:00When you say
16:00we can't let this thing go on,
16:02do you mean your answer
16:03to any question
16:04concerning Iran?
16:06What do you mean
16:06you're so busy
16:07with Iranians calling
16:08you to make a deal?
16:09Are these real Iranians,
16:10or is it possible
16:11you're just getting prank calls?
16:12The Iranians
16:13are calling me all day.
16:15They want to make a deal,
16:16but they'll only make it
16:16with one man,
16:17our special representative
16:18for the Middle East,
16:19and they keep asking him.
16:20They say his name
16:21is Seymour Wiener.
16:23So I say,
16:24hold on,
16:25and then I shout,
16:25we need to Seymour Wiener.
16:28Seymour Wiener,
16:29I need Seymour Wiener,
16:30but they're never there.
16:31He's never there.
16:31We can't find him.
16:32And then I hear laughing
16:33on the other end
16:34of the phone.
16:35And then I hear them say,
16:36you're on Morning Zoo
16:37with Jimmy and the Sharks.
16:39Say, hello, Cleveland.
16:40And I say, hello, Cleveland.
16:41You have to help me find
16:42the Seymour Wiener's guy.
16:44We're more than
16:45two months into the war.
16:46Trump's still trying
16:47to bull his way out of it.
16:48He created this mess.
16:49He can't escape.
16:50It's a departure
16:50from his campaign promises,
16:52and that's why
16:52there's been an evolution
16:53from war
16:54to excursion
16:55to journey.
16:57This has been
16:57A Closer Look.
17:02We'll be right back
17:03with Maya Riddle,
17:05everybody.
17:11For more of
17:11Seth's Closer Looks,
17:12be sure to subscribe
17:13to Late Night
17:14on YouTube.
17:25Our first guest of the night
17:26is an Emmy award-winning actress.
17:28You know from her work
17:29on SNL,
17:30Loot,
17:30Big Mouth,
17:30and Bridesmaids,
17:31she's making her Broadway debut
17:32as Mary Todd Lincoln
17:33and O'Mary,
17:34which is playing
17:34at the Lyceum Theater
17:35here in New York.
17:36Please hold back to the show.
17:37The one, the only,
17:38Maya Rudolph, everybody.
17:55Hello!
17:59Hello!
18:01How are you?
18:02I think I'm good.
18:04I mean,
18:04you're a Broadway darling.
18:06I'm a Broadway darling.
18:07You're a Broadway baby.
18:09I'm a Broadway baby!
18:10You're a Broadway baby!
18:12Now, this is,
18:12I mean,
18:13for all your accomplishments,
18:14was this something
18:14that you had
18:15on your, like,
18:16to-do list
18:17to do Broadway?
18:18Quite honestly, yes.
18:19Like, maybe before
18:21SNL,
18:21and I'm not even joking.
18:22Oh, that's fantastic.
18:24Truly, like,
18:24when I was a little,
18:25a little scrappy peanut,
18:26I thought, like,
18:28one day I'm gonna,
18:29I'm gonna make it
18:30on Broadway, ma.
18:31And were you thinking
18:32at the time,
18:33you're like,
18:33I'll play a historically
18:34inaccurate Mary Todd Lincoln.
18:36Yeah.
18:36Yes.
18:38Isn't that weird?
18:39It is weird.
18:40Now it makes a lot of sense.
18:42This is incredible.
18:43I mean,
18:43this show has already had,
18:44you know,
18:45a run unlike any other.
18:46And, you know,
18:47just shout out to Cole,
18:48Scola,
18:49and the incredible work.
18:50And everybody who...
18:52But this week,
18:54the highest,
18:55the highest box office
18:56yet of its run
18:57was your week on the show.
18:59That's crazy.
19:01I mean,
19:02that's crazy.
19:03You know,
19:04I've seen the show
19:04three times.
19:05I can't wait to see it
19:06with you.
19:07Our friend Andy Samberg
19:08has already called me.
19:09He went and saw the show.
19:10I know.
19:11He called you?
19:11He called me.
19:12He's like,
19:12you can't,
19:13he's like,
19:13it's everything you want it
19:15to be,
19:16and times two.
19:18So he just said
19:19it was the greatest thing ever.
19:20And you had your opening night
19:22or your first night.
19:23Yes,
19:24last week.
19:25Paul and your children came.
19:26My parents came.
19:27Oh, my God.
19:28Paul came.
19:29My kids came.
19:30And talk about,
19:31like,
19:31a full circle moment of life.
19:34Like,
19:34realizing your childhood dream
19:35and then looking in the audience
19:37and seeing your children
19:38sitting next to your dad.
19:39I really,
19:40I lost it.
19:41I mean,
19:41I don't know.
19:42I mean,
19:42you seem pretty calm here
19:43as you notice your family.
19:46That was when...
19:49That was when I saw Pearl.
19:52This is the face you make
19:53when your kids come back
19:54from, like,
19:55a long trip of sea.
19:57Like,
19:57you're still alive.
19:58You made it
19:59and they made it!
20:00I actually,
20:00that was the moment
20:01I saw my daughter Pearl,
20:02who is here in New York,
20:05and she helped me run my lines,
20:07like, every night
20:08to get ready for the show.
20:10Now,
20:10and again,
20:11because,
20:11I mean,
20:11again,
20:12for those who haven't seen it,
20:13like,
20:13this is,
20:14as one might expect
20:14from the title,
20:15this is the lead.
20:17There's a lot of lines.
20:18That's what I realized.
20:19You're out there
20:19most of the show.
20:21The whole time.
20:22You know,
20:22and it's kind of,
20:23you know,
20:23it's so tightly written.
20:25Yeah.
20:25So you want to,
20:26you know,
20:26obviously there's plenty of room
20:27for a performance
20:28and making your own,
20:28but like the actual dialogue,
20:30you want to get it right.
20:30So you had 10 days
20:32to learn it.
20:3310 days.
20:34That is the craziest thing
20:35I've ever heard.
20:35I know,
20:36and I thought at first,
20:37like,
20:37I guess I should be flattered
20:39that they think I know
20:40how to do that.
20:41Well,
20:42that is this assumption
20:43of people that come from SNL.
20:45And that's the thing,
20:45and I kept saying,
20:46I love that you think
20:47I can do this,
20:49but we read cue cards.
20:50Yeah.
20:50Like,
20:51we're lazy.
20:52Right.
20:52I can't,
20:53I haven't memorized
20:54anything in years.
20:56I can't remember
20:57what I'm doing
20:58when I walk into the kitchen.
20:59Like,
20:59I can't remember
21:00what I came in for.
21:02Do you think
21:03we should have Wally
21:04do cue cards
21:04in our kitchen?
21:05Yes.
21:06Oh, my God.
21:07I would love so much
21:08if I walked in
21:08and he's like,
21:09oat milk.
21:11He was like,
21:12you came for toenail clippers.
21:14But it is so funny.
21:16I mean,
21:16look,
21:17the thing about SNL
21:17is you don't,
21:19you know,
21:19you don't get nervous
21:20in front of a live audience.
21:21Right.
21:21But the idea of,
21:22like,
21:22the learning,
21:22I remember when I started
21:23doing this show,
21:24people would be like,
21:24oh,
21:24you'll be so good
21:25at interviewing people
21:26because you interviewed people
21:27in Weekend Update.
21:28And I'm always like,
21:29that's scripted.
21:29It's all scripted.
21:30I know,
21:31have you noticed
21:31a lot of people say,
21:32well,
21:32you know what you're doing
21:33because you guys
21:34improvised on SNL.
21:35I was like,
21:35who improvised
21:36when you were there?
21:37No,
21:38it's very funny too.
21:39It's their way of being like,
21:40because nobody could have
21:40written that ending.
21:47And they're like,
21:47oh,
21:47and that's the best
21:48you could do.
21:49It's like,
21:49uh-huh.
21:49Yeah.
21:50We're actually professionals.
21:52Yeah,
21:52no,
21:52that was on multiple cue cards.
21:53We all signed off on that.
21:56But so you had 10 days
21:58to learn it.
21:59It was like,
22:00it was like,
22:00like fantasy,
22:01like,
22:02basketball camp.
22:03Yeah.
22:04Like,
22:04like they throw you in
22:05and every day you're like,
22:05I don't think I'm going to make it.
22:07And you're like,
22:07and then the next day you're like,
22:08I can dribble now.
22:09Like,
22:09I think I,
22:10I think I,
22:10I think I'm going to be okay.
22:12You were even saying
22:14that basically this week
22:15was the first time
22:16where you're like,
22:17I'm,
22:18you're walking on a stage
22:18confident you know it all.
22:20I would say maybe like
22:22last Friday.
22:24It was like,
22:25which was the end
22:26of the first week
22:27of doing it.
22:28I was like,
22:29oh,
22:29I think I know my lines now.
22:32When it was over,
22:32you told the audience,
22:33you're like,
22:33you're the first people this week
22:34to see the actual play.
22:36Yeah.
22:37Pretty much.
22:37Yeah.
22:38Like,
22:38I'm sorry to all the other people
22:40that paid money.
22:41I think everybody's very happy.
22:42I think everybody's very happy.
22:43You,
22:44obviously,
22:46multiple performers
22:47have taken on this role.
22:48You know some of them.
22:50Did you speak to anybody?
22:51Did you reach out
22:51and talk to anybody
22:52before they did it?
22:53I spoke to Jane Krakowski
22:54about it,
22:55who really got in my head
22:56how heavy the dress was.
22:57And at first,
22:58I was like,
22:58how is it,
22:59Jane?
22:59And she's like,
22:59it's so hard.
23:00And I thought,
23:02if you think it's hard.
23:04because she's a pro.
23:04You're a Broadway professional.
23:07Like,
23:08I should not be here.
23:10It's,
23:11it is,
23:11it's really hard.
23:12But I have to say,
23:13what's so incredible
23:15about the show
23:15is it invites people
23:18like me
23:18or anyone
23:19who brings
23:20what they do
23:22to it.
23:22And I've never felt
23:24like I could be
23:25more myself
23:27and still,
23:28you know,
23:30pay respect
23:30to an existing show.
23:32And so it's like,
23:33for hand bones like me,
23:34it's the best job
23:36in the world.
23:37Well,
23:37you know,
23:38it is that amazing thing
23:40that Cole did
23:41is they started
23:42from the place of
23:43this is not going to be
23:44based in the reality
23:45of this person,
23:46right?
23:46It's going to be loosely,
23:48you know,
23:48based on like historical events.
23:50But any performer
23:52who steps into the role
23:53doesn't have to like adhere
23:54to like who Mary Todd Lincoln was.
23:56It's just like,
23:56it is like built
23:58for a performer
23:59to make it their own.
23:59And built for a performer
24:00to do all the things
24:02that they want to do
24:03and get to do.
24:04And that's why
24:04I think it's lived
24:05for so long.
24:06And that's why
24:07every Mary that comes in
24:09is,
24:09it's a new show.
24:10Yeah.
24:11We,
24:11I mean,
24:12I said this backstage,
24:12but you know,
24:13one of the sketches of yours
24:14that we always talk about,
24:15especially on the Lonely Island podcast,
24:17is when you sang
24:18the national anthem
24:19and there's,
24:20I highly recommend
24:20everybody go on YouTube
24:21and watch it,
24:22but like there's,
24:23there's 57 moves
24:24within four minutes.
24:26And Andy said,
24:27it's like,
24:27Andy's like,
24:28it's like 80 minutes
24:29of watching her
24:30sing the national anthem.
24:31So for anybody
24:32who is on the fence,
24:33hopefully that's,
24:34but I have a lot more questions
24:35and we'll be right back
24:35with more from Maya.
24:56Welcome back, everybody.
24:57We're here with Maya Rudolph.
24:59We talked about...
25:02I feel like I have like,
25:03like this sort of
25:04exalted status
25:05where I have been invited
25:06to a few hangouts
25:07with like this like
25:08golden era SNL women,
25:11the SNL ladies.
25:12And it's kind of crazy
25:13to think that right now
25:14you're on Broadway.
25:15Yeah.
25:16And then Rachel Dratch
25:17and Ana Gastey
25:18are both on Broadway
25:18and also both
25:20Tony nominated.
25:22Isn't that incredible?
25:23It is just,
25:24I mean, again,
25:24like it's not like anyone
25:25who ever spent any time
25:26with you guys
25:27had doubts about
25:28like what you're capable of.
25:29It's just so cool right now
25:30to see it
25:31in this whole new form
25:32on Broadway.
25:33And then your Bridesmaids pal
25:35Rose Byrne also.
25:37Also on Broadway.
25:38Also Tony nominated.
25:39Yeah.
25:40I mean, I know.
25:43It's pretty remarkable.
25:45Yeah.
25:45These ladies,
25:46we're really banging up the boards.
25:49You're banging the boards?
25:50Yeah.
25:50Everybody's very happy
25:51with how guys,
25:52you guys are banging the boards.
25:55The Bridesmaids crew
25:56got together at the Oscars.
25:57I mean, the Oscars
25:57was a special night
25:59for a lot of you.
25:59Right.
26:01Obviously,
26:02you were there
26:04with Paul
26:05and then you also
26:06got to hang out
26:07with your old
26:08Bridesmaids pals.
26:09Was it so nice
26:10to have this
26:10as part of a night?
26:11It was probably
26:11pretty stressful.
26:13It was extra stressful
26:14to then say,
26:15and would you like
26:16to present?
26:17Yeah.
26:17I was like,
26:17I'm already stressed out,
26:19but okay.
26:19You were also,
26:20you were on camera
26:22a fair amount.
26:22Like, obviously,
26:23when they would cut
26:23to Paul,
26:24you were in the shot.
26:25So, were you hyper aware?
26:26You know,
26:27because one battle
26:27after another
26:28had so many nominations.
26:29Yes.
26:30And then,
26:30did you have to,
26:31like, find your
26:32on-camera face
26:33for nomination moments?
26:34Yeah,
26:34because all night
26:35I was sitting there
26:36like this.
26:37And then,
26:38the camera would come on
26:39and I was like...
26:41No, it's actually very,
26:42it's very nerve-wracking,
26:44as I'm sure you know,
26:45because there's somebody
26:46like this all night.
26:48Yeah, yeah.
26:49And it's one thing
26:50when you go to those things
26:51or if you're going to present,
26:52but to have that constant
26:55underarm sweat of, like,
26:57what if they call his name?
26:59Then he has to go up
27:00and speak.
27:01Yes.
27:02What does that look like?
27:03Well, also,
27:04the performance,
27:04because I think
27:05if they call your name,
27:06like, then instinct takes over.
27:07When they don't call your name,
27:08that's when you have to perform
27:10I'm okay with this.
27:11Both sides are horrible.
27:13Yeah.
27:13I remember being in an Emmys once
27:15where I was on the aisle
27:16and we were nominated
27:17and they came,
27:18the camera's right here,
27:19and I'm like,
27:20they can't be this close
27:21if I lost.
27:23And then we lost,
27:24and I was like...
27:25Oh!
27:27Oh, that's horrible.
27:29Oh, it's so horrible.
27:31It's so cheesy.
27:32Yeah, but it was nice
27:32and congratulations to Paul
27:34and his incredible movie.
27:35That was a wild night.
27:36And I have to say,
27:38I don't...
27:40Yeah, it's so weird
27:41to go to those things
27:42and then you say,
27:42like, it doesn't matter
27:43if you win.
27:43But then you see
27:44the person you love win
27:46and you're like,
27:46winning is fun.
27:47Oh, yeah.
27:48It's so fun.
27:49There's really something to it.
27:51At a certain point,
27:52he was like,
27:52is this night going by fast?
27:53And I was like,
27:54yeah, because you're winning.
27:55Yeah.
27:56Time goes so fast
27:57when things are going well.
27:58So much faster
27:58when you're winning.
28:00Remember that.
28:00Yeah.
28:02We talked about
28:03how this was a dream
28:04of yours, Broadway.
28:06A theater camp kid
28:07back in the day?
28:08Big time.
28:08But, like,
28:09it wasn't like
28:10Frenchwood's theater,
28:11like, professional theater camp.
28:12It was like,
28:13my high school teacher
28:14did a thing called
28:15production camp.
28:15So I did a lot of, like,
28:18you know,
28:19runaway kids,
28:21like, singing songs.
28:22Oh, wow.
28:23Okay.
28:23Like, a lot of music,
28:24like, original musicals.
28:25I see, right.
28:26I think there was
28:26a character named Crackers.
28:28Okay.
28:29Because, like,
28:30Crackers is crazy.
28:31I think Crackers,
28:33Crackers is comedy relief.
28:34This was an unlicensed camp
28:36that did not have the rights
28:37to Broadway musicals.
28:39Yeah, no, we didn't do, like...
28:41So you had a teacher
28:41who mostly was trying,
28:43obviously now,
28:43you realize,
28:44trying to trick you
28:45into running away.
28:45That's right.
28:46And make money off it.
28:47And make money off it.
28:49And giving you names,
28:50undercooked names,
28:50like Crackers.
28:52Some might say,
28:53undercooked.
28:54Some might say,
28:55perfect.
28:57What is your...
28:58You have a show tonight.
28:59Yeah.
29:00Like, when I leave here.
29:01You go right over.
29:02Will?
29:04Will you have time?
29:06Do you have pre-show prep,
29:08and will you have time
29:09for it, having been here?
29:10I'm supposed to.
29:12Yeah.
29:13I try to warm up.
29:14I try to warm up a little bit,
29:15warm up my voice,
29:16and then do, like,
29:18really embarrassing,
29:18like, warm-ups,
29:19like, blow through a straw.
29:22My vocal coach gave me,
29:24like, a kazoo,
29:25and Joan Lader,
29:26she's great.
29:27But, I mean,
29:27I would imagine
29:29it's an impossible show
29:29to do without warming up.
29:30It would seem, like,
29:31very irresponsible and unsafe.
29:33Yes, that's correct.
29:34And I, by the way,
29:35I also still don't really
29:37know what I'm doing,
29:37so I do it,
29:38but I feel, like,
29:39really self-conscious,
29:40like, I hope no one
29:41in the hall can hear me.
29:43As you blow in your kazoo?
29:44As I blow in my kazoo.
29:46Yeah.
29:46Which maybe is, like,
29:47not what you're supposed to do.
29:49I don't know.
29:50The Broadway pros are like,
29:51Oh, she's new.
29:53Ooh, yeah.
29:54She's still doing kazoo.
29:56We're on banjo.
30:00Also, congratulations,
30:02not just to you,
30:03but to the ticket-buying public.
30:04Extended for two weeks,
30:05your run.
30:06Yes, it is.
30:07In O'Meara.
30:08Till July 5th.
30:09Till July 5th.
30:10So, the window remains open
30:12for people to come and see you.
30:14Maya, I'm so excited to see you,
30:15and I'm so happy to have you here.
30:17It's so great to have you
30:17in New York City.
30:19Maya Rudolph, everybody.
30:20You can see Maya in O'Meara
30:22at the Lycian Theater.
30:23We'll be right back
30:24with Michael Gandolfini.
30:48You know our next guest
30:50from his work in such films,
30:51such as The Many Saints of Newark's
30:53and shows like The Deuce and The Offer.
30:54He stars as Daniel Blake
30:56in Daredevil, Born Again,
30:57which is now streaming on Disney+.
30:59Let's take a look.
31:00What's going on?
31:03Daniel.
31:06You know, it's not just Fisk and Buck.
31:10It's me, too.
31:11I've done things.
31:14What are you talking about?
31:18I went upstate with Buck
31:20to the Catscales,
31:22and we buried a body.
31:24Jesus.
31:29I went upstate with Buck
31:30and I wish I didn't know I did that.
31:37But I can't have anyone else
31:40knowing I did that.
31:51Please welcome back to the show,
31:52Michael Gandolfini, everybody!
31:54Let's do it, Anna!
32:09Lovely to see you again!
32:11It's so good to be back.
32:12I know.
32:13I was looking.
32:13I was watching before,
32:15and I was thinking,
32:16who's going to lay down on this,
32:17you know, couch?
32:18I know.
32:18It's a nice couch.
32:19Nobody ever lays down on it.
32:20Why?
32:21I should have laid down on it.
32:22When it's over
32:23and everybody leaves,
32:24you can stay.
32:25You can lay right down
32:26on the couch if you need it.
32:27You've been very busy.
32:28Thanks for having fun.
32:30Congratulations on the show.
32:31Season 2 finale
32:33aired last night.
32:35Yes, it did.
32:35You know, look,
32:36Season 1 was great,
32:37but I think a lot of people,
32:39you know,
32:39to no insult to Season 1,
32:41were like,
32:41wow, Season 2 was excellent.
32:42No, no, it's so true.
32:44I mean, I think there's a lot.
32:45There's some creative changes
32:46in Season 1.
32:47We had the strike,
32:48and so there's still
32:49finding its groove,
32:50but I think Season 2,
32:52Dario came in,
32:53and just from the beginning
32:54to the end,
32:55there was an insular vision,
32:56and it just really took off.
32:58And it must be so nice
32:59when you go into
33:00having gone through
33:01the different kind of season
33:02where there's interruptions
33:03outside of your control.
33:04To have a singular vision,
33:05to be a part of it,
33:06you must feel the difference.
33:07Totally, and I mean,
33:09it was so crazy
33:10because when you're
33:11in a superhero show,
33:13you know,
33:13it's about the superheroes.
33:15I don't have power,
33:15so it's like, oh, no,
33:16am I going to not be able
33:18to do anything?
33:19And so to have that,
33:19like, character arc
33:20and for him to really
33:21give me that whole thing,
33:22that was really amazing,
33:24and I was so grateful.
33:25I'm a little worried
33:25about Season 3 being as good.
33:27Yeah, I mean,
33:27I'm not in it.
33:28Yeah, that's right.
33:30That's where I was getting at.
33:32You know, I feel like,
33:33you know, I don't want to,
33:34like, you know,
33:34I know it's spoiler alert-y.
33:35Exactly.
33:36But you, uh,
33:38you dead.
33:38Yeah, I am dead.
33:40You dead.
33:41You not on vacation.
33:42You dead.
33:43No, no, I'm dead.
33:45First, your first
33:45on camera at death.
33:47How was that experience?
33:48It was really,
33:50I mean, well,
33:51it was really fun to watch.
33:52It was fun to watch also
33:53because it was actually
33:54done post-shooting.
33:56So we didn't know
33:56if I was going to die or not.
33:58I actually lived originally.
33:59Oh, wow.
34:00Yeah, and so
34:02when I went back
34:03and they told me,
34:04you know, you're going to die,
34:04I was like, oh, like, how?
34:06Like, what is it going to,
34:07you know?
34:08And then I went in
34:08and I was like,
34:09oh, yeah,
34:09that's how they kill me.
34:11Yeah.
34:11Shoot me in the head.
34:12It is one of those things
34:14where a photo is posted
34:16to let you know
34:17no hard feelings
34:18between you and the actor
34:19who played the character
34:20who killed you.
34:21Right.
34:21And I think this is nice
34:23to let us know
34:24that, you know,
34:24it's all good.
34:25Yeah.
34:26Would we all be so lucky
34:27to have a nice moment
34:29with our killer?
34:30Absolutely.
34:31It's so good.
34:31What a handsome pair.
34:33What a handsome pair.
34:34I know, I know.
34:35Artie's just looking dapper
34:36and I'm looking a little,
34:37a little worse for the war.
34:38A little worse for the women's hair.
34:39That's okay.
34:40Vincent D'Offro,
34:41we were talking about him
34:42backstage.
34:43You know, a titan.
34:44Yes, absolutely.
34:46And a really cool cat
34:47to hang out with.
34:48It must have been fantastic
34:49to spend a couple years
34:51in his orbit.
34:52It was unbelievable
34:53and how lucky is he
34:54to be there with me?
34:55I know, yeah.
34:57100%.
34:57It's like, absolutely.
34:58Like, everybody's getting
34:59the synergy.
35:00Everybody's getting
35:00something out of it.
35:01But he, I mean,
35:02the reason,
35:03I was a fan of Daredevil
35:05when I was really young
35:06and I watched the show
35:07through high school
35:08but when this show
35:10really came around,
35:11like, the fact
35:11that I could be with him
35:12is the reason
35:13I wanted to do it.
35:14I mean, he was such a teacher.
35:16He's such a kind soul.
35:17He's a natural teacher
35:18and takes you under his wing
35:19and just, every day,
35:21I just couldn't believe,
35:22you know,
35:22to give you, like,
35:23a Kubrick story
35:24and you just be like,
35:25what is happening?
35:26This is amazing.
35:27So, I was so lucky
35:29to work with him.
35:29And then,
35:30this is a trip.
35:31So, Charlie Cox,
35:32who obviously plays Daredevil,
35:33you met him.
35:35You saw him on Broadway?
35:36I did, yeah.
35:37I saw him.
35:38He did a show on Broadway
35:39and I went and...
35:40How old are you now?
35:41I mean, when I saw him?
35:43Yeah.
35:44I was probably...
35:44I must have been 16.
35:46Okay, gotcha.
35:4715.
35:47And I saw him
35:48and I waited
35:49to get his autograph
35:50and I said,
35:50you know,
35:51I'm an actor,
35:51blah, blah, blah.
35:52And he said,
35:53oh, well, you know,
35:54can't wait to work with you.
35:56And so, when I got the job,
35:58he FaceTimed me
35:59and he said,
35:59do you know how many times
36:01I've said that
36:01knowing that
36:02I'll never, ever work with him?
36:05It was so cool.
36:07It was really, really such a gift.
36:08That's awesome.
36:09They're both great gentlemen.
36:11You mentioned you were
36:12a Daredevil fan
36:13when you were a kid.
36:14Yes.
36:15And, I mean,
36:16you were probably a little bummed
36:17that you didn't get
36:17the part of Daredevil.
36:19Yeah.
36:19Even though Charlie had the part.
36:21In my part,
36:22I had the part.
36:23And by the way,
36:24if the director,
36:25if the showrunner
36:25had seen this photo,
36:26I feel like they might have recast.
36:28Right.
36:29Right.
36:30Yeah.
36:30Yeah.
36:31No, it's true.
36:33It's true.
36:33I know.
36:35It's true.
36:36I like how, like,
36:38this Daredevil
36:38just looks so tired
36:39with it all.
36:40Yeah, yeah.
36:41This is Daredevil
36:42seeing there's 10 more ninjas.
36:43He's got bags under those masks.
36:45Yeah, he's just like,
36:46oh, my God.
36:46He's tired.
36:47It's been a long day.
36:48They're like,
36:48are you not going to put on
36:49the whole Daredevil suit?
36:50You're like, just not today.
36:52Just the mask.
36:52The mask will do it.
36:53Just the mask.
36:54They know I'm Daredevil.
36:55Exactly.
36:56They'll get it.
36:57They'll get it.
36:59I met your lovely mother backstage.
37:01She is a fan of the show.
37:02I mean, I think she's a fan of yours.
37:05That's true.
37:05That brought her to the show.
37:07Thank God.
37:07Yeah, she's a fan of mine.
37:08If they had cast someone else in your part,
37:10she maybe wouldn't have watched Daredevil?
37:12That's for sure.
37:13Yeah.
37:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:14But is she transitioning now
37:16to a fan of the superhero genre?
37:18I mean, I really think she is now.
37:19I mean, I get these calls like,
37:21Electra, what do you think about her?
37:23And I'm like, hmm, I'm not sure.
37:26You know, she is so committed.
37:28And she had, like, the day, you know,
37:30I got killed, she was like,
37:32oh, should I watch it?
37:33Should I not watch it?
37:34And she just called me in tears.
37:36She was just so heartbroken.
37:38But now she's, like, in on season three.
37:40She has the biggest crush on Bullseye.
37:42She's just like, that Bullseye guy is amazing.
37:45Bullseye always, yeah.
37:46He's always been as villains go.
37:49Exactly.
37:49She really loves Bullseye.
37:51And so she is truly a superhero fan.
37:53Like, and what a cool,
37:54I just didn't think she'd ever watch a show
37:56I'd, like, loved in high school.
37:59And now she's watching it now.
38:00So it is really special.
38:01Was there ever a world
38:02where you wouldn't warn her ahead of time
38:04that, like, hey, I'm going to die in this episode?
38:06No, no way.
38:07You had to tell you.
38:08Like, NBAs don't count with moms.
38:10That's the rule.
38:11Right.
38:12When Marvel was like,
38:13you can't tell anybody,
38:14you were like, I'm going to tell my mom.
38:15My mom knew immediately.
38:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:18And she knew when I died,
38:19and she knows everything.
38:21But she was good, right?
38:22She didn't spill the beans.
38:23No, but she'd be stressed about it.
38:25She was like, she's like,
38:26my friends are asking how season three is going.
38:29I'm telling them it's going great.
38:30But, like, you're dead in it.
38:32And I was like, just, it's okay.
38:33I feel like her friends were hanging up the phone
38:35being like, well, Michael dies.
38:37Yeah, yeah.
38:39Based on how flustered she was.
38:41He's not going to make it.
38:43Yeah, 100%.
38:45Congratulations on the show.
38:46It was wonderful.
38:47You had a great run on it.
38:48Thank you very much.
38:49So nice to see you again, Michael.
38:50Thank you, guys.
