00:09after pleading guilty to stealing 7,000 ringgit in cash from a business premise in Yonker Street last month.
00:17Magistrate Uthman Abdul Ghani imposed the fines on Qing Xiaomin, Yan Chaoyang and Lu Yongde
00:23and ordered them to serve four months jail in default of payment.
00:28A fourth accused, Dong Huangbing, was sentenced to four months jail for the same offence.
00:33All four pleaded guilty after the charge was read out to them in Mandarin by a court interpreter.
00:40They were accused of jointly stealing a wallet containing the cash belonging to an individual
00:44at the Coconut Shake store in Yonker Street on April 25.
00:49In the same proceedings, Dong and another accused, Li Gang, were each sentenced to four months jail
00:55after pleading guilty to a charge of overstaying in the country.
00:59Lawyer Mona Anak Leonard Lubon, representing all the accused,
01:04requested the court to impose a minimum fine and a short jail term,
01:09citing that her clients were senior citizens.
01:12However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Xiaoki Madia Baharudin urged for a proportionate sentence,
01:18saying that although the case involved a pickpocketing offence committed by senior citizens,
01:23it nevertheless affected public interest and was believed to have been premeditated.
